Aw: Woman Fitted With Cochlear Implants Hears for the First Time In Her Life
— Ace

She was born with Usher syndrome, which made her deaf since birth and then struck her blind in her mid-20s.

Usher syndrome is...

a rare genetic disorder associated with a mutation in any one of 10 genes resulting in a combination of hearing loss and visual impairment and is a leading cause of deafblindness.

It is incurable at present. The condition is characterized by hearing loss and gradual loss of vision.

The below video, definitely worth a watch, shows her reaction to hearing sounds (and human speech) for the first time in her life.

The cochlear implant catches sounds itself, then sends those impulses directly to the auditory nerve, bypassing the broken circuit of her actual ear. The implant transmits basic sounds, not the rich range natural hearing offers, but at this point, I guess, she's not complaining.

Actually she does say "everything sounds so high-pitched," which her nurse assures her will change once her brain figures out what sounds are being transmitted by which part of the auditory nerve.

But that's a curious thing -- how the heck does a woman deaf since birth know what "high-pitched" is?

Faker.

Just kidding.

She called the experience "overwhelming," which is borne out by the video.

"The switch-on was the most emotional and overwhelming experience of my life and IÂ’m still in shock now. I have to learn to recognise what these sounds are as I build a sound library in my brain.

"Hearing things for the first time is so emotional from the ping of a light switch to running water. I canÂ’t stop crying and I can already foresee how itÂ’s going to be life changing." The operation also means Joanne has been able to hear her own -- and othersÂ’ -- voices for the first time. She said: "IÂ’m so happy. Over the last 48 hours hearing someone laughing behind me, the birds twittering and just being with friends... they didnÂ’t have to tap my arm to get my attention which a massive leap."

I guess also she's still blind. But one miracle at a time.

Thanks to @mflynny (NDH).

And in further "awww" news, firefighters serenade a child trapped in an elevator with the song "Let it Go" from Frozen, to calm her down.

That's from @drewmtips.

And speaking of miracles -- @sonnybunch and @comradearthur share this incredible video of a cat who learns how to do a Bane impression for the first time.

4 I was wondering if by "high" she meant "loud". When you've never heard any sound, even normal conversation must seem quite loud. But, just imagine the horror of not being able to see or hear. You are utterly dependent upon others. God Bless her.

13 I was wondering if by "high" she meant "loud". When you've never heard any sound, even normal conversation must seem quite loud. ----------------------------------- I remember having lost 40-50% hearing in one ear due to an infection. A few months later after I was over it, they cleaned the gunk out with a blast of warm water. For the first day afterwards it sounded like the volume in that ear was turned up much louder.

14 How did she recognize the sounds of the words if she's never heard them before???  How would she know what the speaker was saying?

25 She may have been able to "hear" some sounds by transmission through bones. Beethoven used this method after the onset of deafness - he'd bite one end of a stick with the other pressed against the piano. The sound would have a definite bass bias.

37 As I mentioned in an earlier thread, she faces some serious challenges. Cochlear implants work best on people who have had hearing and lost it, like Rush Limbaugh. Your brain already knows what sound is and how to process it. Beyond that, she faces ostracization and hostility from the deaf community. It's a veryÂ….oddÂ…community at times. Very insular. Very disdainful of the hearing world. My wife was a deaf ed major for several years in college and finished with a minor in it. We went college in St. Augustine, FL, which is where the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind is located. As part of her education, my wife taught dance classes at FSDB. There was a young girl there who got cochlear implants. She was completely shunned, mocked and bullied by other students. My wife found her crying and trying to rip the implants out. I hope this woman receives all of the benefits and none of the trials that go along with the implant. Also, they typically only do one ear at a time. My wife knows much more about the procedure, but apparently it destroys any chance of further surgery or procedures. A cochlear implant is all or nothing.

109 OK, we're past 100 comments and already off-topic. This is something I've been wanting to link all day, since a commenter at Neo-Neocon pointed it out. It's an exploration of the pathology of leftism: http://www.scifiwright.com/2014/03/the-unified-field-theory-of-madness/ It is absolutely a must-read.

151 So I went out on a limb and bought one of those semi-cheesy Amazon produced "100 best..." albums the other day.  1960s surf rock.  Most of it is crap, and this song I'm about to link isn't all that good, except for one thing - imagine right now, before you listen, what it would sound like if Wes Anderson (the movie director, for those not in the know) was talking to his drug dealer.

Seconded.  And yet, right at this very moment, there is some shitheel upset that the grants that supported the research that led to this technology didn't go towards guaranteeing spotted owls the right to gay-marry...and I only slightly exaggerate.

159 Phinn, for a very long time Helen Keller did not speak; she communicated through the deaf alphabet spelled out in her hand. She was still relatively young when her teacher broke through language to her. Plus, she was already learning words before the illness that left her blind and deaf.

As far as the socialism, that might have been through the influence of her beloved Teacher. The woman was Irish and grew up in a home for those with sight and hearing issues. She knew poverty and a great deal of discrimination; even Helen's parents were hesitant about her when she first arrived to work with their daughter. The woman picked the wrong way to try to right the wrongs she saw.

165 Rush Limbaugh said a couple of weeks ago that he's being tested for getting a second cochlear implant. The one he has now, only 6 of the 12 electrodes are still active: they had to turn off the others because they were causing some kind of problem/interference. (Tinnitus?)

Anyway, he got his in, what, 2002 or something? so I'm sure they've improved the tech since then. He says he wants to get stereo-locating hearing back. It was quite interesting: he went into the technical deets pretty extensively on one of his shows last week.

167 I did a technology report on cochlear implants a while ago. It's a lot harder for adults to learn speech if they've been deaf since birth (prelingually deaf) than it is for children to learn it. Much like learning a foreign language when you're young compared to when you're in college. That and there's a "deaf culture" movement that is vehemently against giving children this life-changing technology.
