15 repost- OMG. This isn't satire or from the Onion. http://tinyurl.com/m8h8woj MOBILE, Ala. -- The Navy and Austal USA held a keel laying ceremony for the future USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS 10), the Navy's tenth littoral combat ship (LCS), in Mobile, Ala., April 16. The keel-laying ceremony recognizes the first joining together of a ship's components. While modern shipbuilding processes allow fabrication of individual modules to begin months earlier, the laying of the keel represents the formal beginning of a ship. The ship's sponsor, Ms. Roxanna Green, was unable to attend the ceremony. The ship's namesake, former Representative Gabrielle Giffords, authenticated the keel by having her initials welded into a sheet of the ship's hull. --------- Perhaps old news but first I have heard of it. Seventh grade, I started, deliberately, a shoving match with Dave Anderson during recess. Knocked his glasses off, they broke, I don't remember why I did it, probably just being a dick. Anyway, the teacher comes over and breaks it up, then asks who started it. I said he did, he said I did, she looked right at Dave and said "Lincoln Tf does not lie!", then punished him. The look on his face, one of truly being wronged, sticks with me.

My mother informed her that it appeared that I had read more books than the rest of the class combined, and that she was confident that I had no need to prove to said teacher that I had read them all by writing a report rehasing each one, in fact it would  be a waste of my time. I had been attending the next higher grade in reading/writing, so the only revenge the teacher could take was to cancel that for the following year.

There was once this kid at school who kept bullying me, and would not leave me the hell alone.  We were alone on the playground by coincidence, and he started in with me.  He was older and significantly bigger.  I'd finally had enough and something just snapped, so I tackled his ass to the ground, sat on his chest, and was about to go MMA on his face.  I looked him dead in the eyes, punched the ground next to his head, then let him up.  He walked away, never told anybody that I know about, and he never bothered me again.

125 102 Of FFS: Postal Service issues forever stamp commemorating Harvey Milk. Yeah, the "martyr" who died simply because he was a douchebag and decided to mock a disgruntled employee with a gun. Two things: One, Milk was a pederast. This is not in dispute. Two, Milk was strongly against gay marriage. Very much so. There were several reasons. Rationally, he felt that marriage was a heteronormative institution (you know, because it is *the* most heteronormative institution of all time) and undermined the legitimacy of homosexuality. He also didn't want his paramours (all quite young) to get the idea that he was going to be around for any length of time. To their dismay.

130 You can rightly blame the Democrats for screwing up the Navy naming ships.

Midway class aircraft carrier from WWII named USS Franklin D. Roosevelt.  Other two ships in class were USS Midway and USS Coral Sea.

Navy tradition had been to name DDs, DEs, and FFs after dead heroes.  Like USS Mahan or USS Ulvert M. Moore.  This tradition still persists in the DDGs but after USS Roosevelt, well all bets were off with other ship classes avoiding such a 'blessing'.

Second ship of the Ford class CVN will be named Kennedy. So the 'tradition' continues of naming carriers after Presidents.

177 Thanks to everyone who resurrected all those high school stories and the resulting haunting ghosts of those years. Or perhaps it's sleep deprivation from 48 hours of non stop 'Burn Notice', and the resulting biochemical hang over.

193 I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that awarding the honor to a living war hero and former POTUS is a damn sight more appropriate than awarding it to an anti-gun nut who's claim to fame is being shot by a crazy person. Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at April 23, 2014 11:34 AM (DmNpO) Giffords didn't used to be an anti-gun nut.

195 Unlike the Movie, "Milk" there is also no indication that Dan White was a closeted gay man or that he killed Milk because of his sexual orientation. He apparently wanted to take out a number of people people of political disagreements with them.

196 NDH - A story I have never told. When my mother was elderly, hospitalized, and near death, I was at the hospital with her. One day, she began to cry, and I was very distressed in not knowing how to comfort her. I asked what she was crying about, and she told me that once as a young girl, she had tried to get a baby chick to fly. She just kept throwing it in the air, and it kept crashing to ground, and trying to run away. It would be amusing, except that my mother was a very kind woman, and she could not imagine being forgiven for having been so cruel to a helpless animal. It was easy for me to tell her that she was just a child doing a childish thing, but that wasn't really helpful. We certainly cannot allow ourselves to become so bound up by our past that it is disabling to our present, but compassionate people do indeed feel and bear burdens that others do not. I think that is one of the great philosophical divides, i.e., an innate sense of personal responsibility as opposed to, say, collective 'Social Justice'.

198 Great minds, etc., etc. I saw this last night on a rerun of FAMILY GUY in which the Griffins are in Texas, trying to become Texans. The cutaway gag with the mule was supposed to be a dig at Texans' alleged close-mindedness (apparently they're not being property submissive to The Hive); but when I saw it I thought: "This jackass is just like a 'liberal!'" (And by "liberal" I mean of course "tax-happy, coercion-addicted State-fellator.")
