Brit Hume: In Good Times, In Bad Times, In the Flush and In the Red, The Hurt Feelings Industry Always Thrive
— Ace

I actually disagree with him on his two examples of Hurt Feelings fake outrage -- over Andrew Cuomo's "no place for extremists" in New York statement, and Huckabee's clumsy phrasing of "controlling their libidos" as an alternative to birth control -- but his general point is, of course, spot on.

8 I think Sandra Fluke would be a better example of hurt feelings. She goes to Congress demanding free birth control and then is offended that anyone would comment on her sex life.

9 Of course the hurt feelings industry always thrives. As long as there is jealousy (which is part of human nature), there will be a Perpetually Aggrieved Class.

I think conservatives tend to make policy that will benefit the most widespread portion of the population, the majority, the common good. Liberals tend to make policy that benefits the outliers, the exceptions. They cater to extreme cases on the edges.

38 You know... I don't know if "they" (whoever "they" are) planned it, but if they *didn't* they couldn't have done much better if they had. People are reared being taught that they're all special (hint- you're mostly not), and that "just playing is winning." Then they get to the real world where they find out they're (mostly) average and that "just playing is... probably going to get you fired for lack of productivity." So then you have this vast well of resentment against (you guessed it) "the rich" AND ALSO all of those people who are trying to extol you to be better than you are. Being angry and jealous is much easier than making yourself better, and now along come the prog/commies who promise to MAKE you special and MAKE you a winner "just for playing."

88 Love means never having to say you're sorry. That is a prime contender for the dumbest quote in film. Love is a deep interpersonal connection that transcends the self. Not saying you're sorry when you should is profoundly selfish. Not saying you're sorry when you should is a sign that what you feel for the other person is anything but love.

Posted by: Seems legit at January 28, 2014 11:14 AM (A98Xu)

90 AllenG The line has also been criticized or mocked, for suggesting that apologies are unnecessary in a loving relationship. Most prominently, a character played by O'Neal himself disparages it in the 1972 screwball comedy What's Up, Doc?: Barbra Streisand's character coos that "Love means never having to say you're sorry" while batting her eyelashes, and O'Neal's character responds, deadpan, "That's the dumbest thing I ever heard." John Lennon offered a contrary version: "Love means having to say you're sorry every five minutes."[3] Years later in a 2004 episode of The Simpsons ("Catch 'Em If You Can"), the Simpson family watches the film, and Lisa retorts, "No it doesn't!" The line has also been parodied countless times, usually substituting another word or phrase for "love" and/or "you're sorry," especially the latter.

93 @83.  Actually, a fistfight is the cure for bullying.  Bullying is the intimidation, coercion, and manipulation that precedes somebody going "I'm not taking your crap" and decking them.  Getting rid of the fighting is what enables bullying.  I should know, because I ignored the prohibition on fighting many times, and seldom had any long-lived problems with bullies because of it...  not for lack of people who wanted to or tried to bully me, but because a bloody nose is a good indicator that you should find a less combative target for whatever abuse you want to unload.

Sandra Fluke of course would be an example, except that she wasn't even a sad case, just a mouthy, entitlement-minded loon. My favorite case is the woman that was used in NC as an example of the 'burdens' of obtaining ID for voting. They had to dig deep to find this woman. Here she is: http://tinyurl.com/lrax7cv Now, of course, Holder (using our 'Justice Department) has filed a racial discrimination suit against NC.

This actually dovetails with Monty's post about language.  Thing is, if you write off certain things as "insensitive" or "offensive," then you slowly but surely write off the ability of people to think in those terms, even if it isn't actually offensive or insentive.

And that puts lives at risk.  Never mind that 100% of the 9/11 terrorists were Muslim...if we profile Muslims that's unthinkable by the self-appointed cognitive elite because it's insensitive and offensive to do so.  It creates a ginormous blind spot in reasoning that just can't be undone easily.

134 Well I disagree with Brit Hume in his presentation of this being somehow on a level playing field--or even-handed. We are surrounded by The Free Shit Army and they have a phalanx of propagandists that hold the theaters of communication hostage-- newspapers, most of the cables, the broadcast networks, the news magazines-- we have --what? FOX News--with Shep Smith commandeering the "breaking news" and doing interpretive dance reporting every chance he gets. They've "policed" us thoroughly in the free speech department. First it was the politically correct speech, now it is this disproportionate micro-examination of every word--a Republican utters. Meanwhile Democrats communicate pretty much uncensored, and unmonitored at the rate of Twitter. When you are that handicapped and impeded to speak for and to your constituency you are losing. I guess that's why when some of our own join in on the policing we feel as if it is a betrayal. (Kind of like the Jewish police force that worked for the Nazis.) 179 OT was off reading this CAUGHT ON TAPE: The Brazen Milwaukee Public Schools Protection Racket (Video) Why would a cash strapped school system refuse to sell empty buildings while laying people off to pay retired union pensions? Because these eager buyers are private schools in the state voucher system and MPS sees them as competition. ... Jaw dropping part: When MPS school board President Michael Bonds compares children to soda, saying the request to sell empty buildings to non-union operators is like “asking the Coca-Cola company to turn over its facilities to Pepsi.” http://tinyurl.com/krgbbh6 Good Lord.

181 Today's Thomas Sowell column mentioned that "social justice" is just high-falutin' for "envy." Envy is harmless, as are most of the so-called deadly sins. The only sin I hate is greed. In some other people, greed is evil. But I don't mind my favorite politicians living like Tzarists. Posted by: A leftist ------------------ I'm certainly NOT going to argue with Sowell, he would squash me like a bug. Having said that, I think the distinction between 'envy' and 'jealousy' is that in the former case, I would simply like to have the same thing(s) that you do. In The latter case, I want *your* things. Which is to say that I think 'social justice' has to do with jealousy rather than envy.

187 I heard the entire Huckabee quote, and I don't see anything wrong with it. I have not heard the entire Cuomo quote, but for a governor to declare that anyone's views exclude them from living in his state is unacceptable. What he seems to be calling "extreme" views were normal and unquestioned within the lifetimes of everyone here, and are still normal for many people of good will. Fuck that fascist Cuomo.

190 I'd like to say just how fucking brilliant Rand Paul was on Meet the Press. Gregory thought he would get a shot in on republicans with a War on Women reference and another shot at Paul's wife for talking about Clinton. Paul turned it around in a heartbeat, tossing the liberal MSM under the bus for covering the serial woman abuser's ass. It's a good lesson for conservatives running for office. Don't accept the premise of some asshat liberal's question. Attack with simple to understand facts, and in each attack, go after the media. When are we going to teach our politicians that if they want to run for office representing us, they need to learn the fundamentals of dealing with the press?

212 You could say farming hasn't been the same since slaves became hard to obtain and keep. Those old Romans really did farming right, but why not when slaves could dig a deep pit for you to plant your asparagus on top of. (The pit was then filled in with all sorts of things asparagus plants were thought to love.)
You could also say that the demise of the Democratic-Republican Party, who knew that the yeomanry was essential to free elections, if not to freedom, was also a bad sign. The Hamiltonians came back with a fury, eventually, and now even Wall Street has morphed into another Socialist tool. (The equities markets are high because of quantitative easing: would you buy long term paper these days?)

It is yet to be seen if all that fuss is empty or not. At this point, I have more respect for the liberal ward of the state angry enough at Bush to actually try to emigrate to Canada, but was refused because he's a straight up mess, than respect for someone who throws a big fat fit but does not follow through. Hannity's credibility is on the line. He had better move or he's just another screaming stuck pig.
