California Cattle to California: GTT
— Dave in Texas

First the oil companies and now the cows. Soon we'll have everything they love.

The severe drought in California is forcing ranchers to thin their herds and sell off to buyers in Texas and Oklahoma. Both states are still dealing with drought conditions too but not nearly as severe as what's happening out west. Rainfalls in the Lone Star State and that ballcap Oklahoma have been better the past couple years which means grass is growing and can support hungry cows.

Because of historically dry conditions, California’s soil moisture — a key ingredient for the forage that cattle graze on — is low throughout the state. With feed costs high and weeks of dry weather in the forecast, ranchers are already selling off parts of their herds as normally green grazing pastures have turned brown.

“We’re in the drought now, so a lot of these are going back to Texas,” said rancher and auction house co-owner Monty Avery, gesturing to a pen packed full of cows. “We usually sell about 100-150 animals per week. Now we’re seeing 800-1,000 per week, so the volume’s jumped up.”

The bad news for everybody is the cost of raising cattle, even migrant cattle shipped where there's water is driving up beef prices. Oh, In N Out Burger has opened up a bunch of joints here too. Tried one last week. Not bad.

12 Speaking of farms in California: Off-topic: Fuckin' SCALE!!! Arrgghhhh! I hate those damn bugs! I grow rare citrus. Last fall I discovered scale insects infecting one of my trees (sanguinelli blood orange) and I went to GREAT lengths to eradicate them: - I plucked off every infected leaf I could find and destroyed the leaves. - I hand-removed every single scale I could find. - I sprayed specific scale-killing insecticide in crucial areas. - I then SATURATED the tree in a special kind of oil that smothers the scale insects but is non-toxic to everything else. Problem SOLVED. Or so I thought. I just went to inspect the same tree after 5 months and... ...they're BACK! You'd think for an insect that basically can't even move (they stay fixed in one place like barnacles most of the time), they'd be easy to get rid of. But they make up for immobility by being parthenogenic (i.e. essentially "born pregnant"). So just one surviving scale can make zillions of offspring. They can crawl for a few inches during a certain phase in their early development, so they spread.... Ugh. I HATE them!!!!!! And now I have to eradicate them all over again. I found just a few in one branch, but that's all it takes.

28 This is ironic in the sense that CA is one of the, if not the top, state that can grow produce of varying types. This is the state that invented the "eat local" bullshit. Why? Because the were lucky enough to have diverse soil to grow almost anything! Everything that could be grown in the Western Hemisphere could be grown in CA, meaning everything was "local" to them.

50 Texas herds were downsized due to drought in 2011. Now they are "beefing" them up again. The Californians are selling cheap so that is where to get them to replace stock sold off in 2011. They have some very fine blood stock in Calli which will improve herds here.

Posted by: Flatbush Joe at February 19, 2014 05:15 PM (ZPrif)

64 We'll it all depends, as they say. If they are shipping them to feed lots, then it will increase the near term supply of beef, and lower prices ... If they are selling them to breeders, then this will increase the supply in the future, but not now, without any measurable impact to consumers. Cattle prices in Texas are already higher than in anyone's memory because of sell offs in the last couple of years, and the ranchers current desires to build their herds back up to pre drought levels. And winters not over, so unless they have excess hay and feed for their current herds, they are at risk to buy. So the market could go all goofy, but we won't know which way until later.

149 Of course if you want to talk about beef, then you have to also mention grain prices... Did any liberal anywhere ever consider that using corn to drive a car can impact the price of their granola? I know I know, there's no corn in granola... But if corn prices get artificially inflated (obligatory Reggie mention here) then grains are substituted, and the price off other agricultural products increases. So yeah yeah let's use a grain that is valuable as a worldwide food commodity ... So that the Iranians don't get nukes. Oh, what? The devil you say ...the preznits closest advisor is Iranian? WTF didn't we know how to deal with "those people that we are at war with" in WWII?

229 re: Medfly infestation in California - My recollection is when the flies reached LA County, and they started spraying down here. A lot of the locals went nuts about it, and the city of LA (Mayor Tom Bradley, at the time) resolved to do something about it. So when a study revealed that the pesticide Malathion, which was being sprayed to control the bugs, caused cancer, the city immediately filed a court order to stop the spraying. Of course, if they'd waited a few days before doing so, they might have avoided some embarassment. That's how long it took the people doing the studying to determine that the actual chance of developing cancer from malathion was somewhat less likely than the chance of developing it from exposure to this rare substance known as "dirt".

There was a similar ballot proposition in 2012 that would have (among other things) have done something similar to genemods in foods. One friend of mine pointed out to another friend of mine that the end result would be genemod labels just as common and useless as the cancer signs. But the latter friend couldn't figure out why something like that would happen and swore up and down that it wouldn't.

I could tell he was looking for someone. As I get to my vehicle I notice another cop doing the same thing in a strip mall adjacent to the Walmart. I drive down and head over to the gas station across the street and a cop pulls up behind me and follows me into the station. Two more cops pull in as I go into the store. What happened? The gas station had a guy drive off without paying for gas and at least five different cop cars showed up to catch this dangerous criminal.

365 The more resources the cops use, the more they can claim they actually needed, and the bigger the budget gets. Then, once they have bigger toys, they use them more to make it seem justifiable that they have them at all.

Meanwhile, our company can't even get the cheap bastards to pay for software they are using to convict actual criminals. Because it isn't in "budget."

373 Yeah grocery prices keep going up. Ten cents here, ten cents there but it adds up. I have been tracking my weekly grocery prices for about 3 months now and most items have gone up just over that 3 month period.

Sure they do. They just forget to shoot 'em nine times.

376 I live in SE OK and this winter has been way too close to Southern Colorado type snow and cold for my liking. You have it backwards. I preferred the milder winters of SoColo to the nasty cold in Enid. BTW, I like flat, open land. Enid is on my list of acceptable places to live. Posted by: tbodie at February 19, 2014 09:51 PM (5SlKF) Some nice people there, but the crime rate is (was?) higher than you might expect. Many college girls raped during my time there.

380 Yeah at first I thought I might have a run-in because the cop followed me over to the station but the vehicle didn't match mine at all and no one said anything to me. I figured out what happened from the store clerks. But if my vehicle had been similar...yikes I hate to think what might have happened. Posted by: Dack Thrombosis at February 19, 2014 10:47 PM (oFCZn) exactly , for us it was a white suv. but the dad and kid were in a big brown ford pick up with a concrete pump. a dead give a way . right?

381 But if my vehicle had been similar...yikes I hate to think what might have happened. Same thing happened to my middle stepson and my son. Someone robbed a Goodwill store (really?) and the getaway truck matched the one my stepson was driving. Two cop cars stop him with pistols and shotguns drawn. My stepson about pissed his pants. I asked him what my son did, and he told me he was just zoned out in his seat staring off into space. Nothing like an armed robbery with an 8 year old as your wheelman!

Didn't Wasserperson-Schultz show up during the recall and tell everyone to vote for Barrett? She probably single-handedly added at least a couple of thousand votes to Walker's total.

I am kinda worried about this stupid email thing because the left is going to stop at nothing to try to get Walker. And there are a lot of stupid people in this state.

384 Ha.I have a friend who delivered her baby in Hobbits Glen, apparently. It was pretty funny seeing all of her pictures tagged with that on facebook.

386 Eh, how bad can the water problems in California be? They are cutting back the water supplies to the farmers to protect the smelt. http://bit.ly/1e92MXo And they are dumping water from reservoirs to protect the salmon. http://bit.ly/1gYfUD2 And the state is ordering power plants that were built on the ocean to stop using ocean water for cooling, and switch to closed-loop cooling using fresh water. bit.ly/NcIwhv So they must have plenty of water, right? Because it would be insane to do the above things if they don't. Oh wait, California, insane... yeah. Yeah.

Hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of dairy cattle now reside in the Texas panhandle and eastern New Mexico that used to reside in California. They brought their prosperous dairy farmers with them when  they moved. This all has happened within the last 20 years and it had nothing to do with drought conditions. It had to do with avoiding a state legislature that was eaten up with rabid, radical enviornmentalists. The county I grew up in has always had a large beef cattle industry, but it's been overshadowed by the dairy cattle industry since the turn of the century.
