"Cauchemaresque," "Sans Precedent:" The French Left Looses Huge in France's Municipal Elections

Note this is not the President (Hollande), who will remain in office even longer than Obama (the next presidential election is sometime in 2017, probably March).

"Nightmarish," says LeMonde.

"Without precedent," says Le Figaro.

France just held its municipal elections -- held every two years to vote in mayors, town councilors, etc. -- and the Socialists (PS, Parti Socialist) lost badly.

At least 155 towns with 9,000 inhabitants or more switched from leftist rule (PS or associated leftist parties) to rightist (usually Sarkozy's party, l'UMP). Some towns, which have had socialist rule for 37 or 43 years, have now dumped the socialist party in favor of the UMP.

Limoges has been ruled by socialists since 1912 -- except during the Vichy years (when the Nazis ruled it) and except for 1946-47, when it was ruled by... Communists. That town has now flipped to a UMP mayor.

The "far right" party, the Front National (FN), picked up something like 15 mayorships as well.

The Prime Minister (himself PS) confessed the defeat.


Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault acknowledged the vote was "a defeat for the government and the [Socialist] majority".

"This message is clear... The president will draw conclusions, and he will do so in the interest of France,'' he added, in an apparent reference to a likely cabinet reshuffle.

These elections don't directly affect the national government. The elections for the French Senate will be held this September (I believe this is exactly the midway point in a President's five-year term). But this is the public's first chance to weigh in on Hollande's socialist rule, and they're not happy about it.

I doubt this has much to do with American politics, except in this minor way. When Democrats are in trouble, the media frequently portrays the public as "in an anti-incumbent" mood, as if they're just against incumbents, period, without parsing out between which incumbents they're most displeased by.

Similar crap was/is going on in France, with much made of the very poor turnout rate -- the elections featured an all-time high of people choosing not to vote in a municipal election.

Thus the public was in an "anti-incumbent" mood.

But they didn't vote out all incumbents. Only three towns moved from having a rightist (UMP) mayor to having a leftwing one. Meanwhile, at least 155 moved the other way, in what is being called the droitisation (rightward movement) of the electorate.

Hollande is not directly affected by this. Even if he looses the September elections, he still won't be booted out of power, because the Prime Minister is selected by the Senate, but the President (like the President in America) serves his full term no matter who holds the Senate.

But this is obviously a major blow to the left. So much so that Hollande will address the nation at 8 PM (their local time) to say something or other about what is variously being called a "rout," "debacle," and "penalty" for the left.

Interestingly, it's also frequently said that a "vague bleu" swept France -- a Blue Wave. The French have retained the historical use of red for the left, so the right is blue.

Oh it's also being called the left's Berezina. The French don't speak of "meeting one's Waterloo," for some reason. Usually they refer to another of Napoleon's major setbacks, that at the Battle of Berezina (a river in Russia in 1812). Like our own Waterloo expression, it means "disaster" or "catastrophe).

BTW: There's some lame spin in the world press that the left's "consolation" is that Paris elected its first female mayor.

That is not consolation. Hildago's opponent, NKM (I forget her full name) was also a woman.

It has been known that Paris would have a female mayor, whether the PS candidate Hildago or the UMP candidate NKM, for a full year.

Meanwhile, some "anti-fascism" groups are protesting the FN's wins in some towns by... threatening political violence.

I'm not sure if they understand what "anti-fascism" means.

While it might be significant, it also might not be... or  at least not significant of anything other than provincial politics.

 

If, for example, the towns are losing revenue to the federal government, it might cause a backlash.  That wouldn't make them less socialist, just greedy to keep it all  for themselves. 

 

I don't know, I'm just speculating.  It would also be important to know if these were mostly small towns, or if the larger  cities are included in the discussion.

I'm guessing because the Brits already co-opted the Waterloo expression, and the French weren't about to copy their   old enemies across the pond.




I wish Europe would get its collective head  out of its equally collective ass and    put aside its socialist/communist/Marxist/other-words-ending-in-IST   history and start actually trying to FUNCTION again.   This deluge in France is a welcome breath of fresh air, but I fear that -- just like here in the States -- it won't translate to long-term change.

The strikers were blocking several other businesses as well. I pushed past some dismayed customers who were afraid to cross the line and as I pulled the door to the AmEx place a striker ran over to me screaming in rapid fire French. I had on cowboy boots (which were a remarkable ice breaker in Paris) so I pointed at them and shrugged my shoulders and said, "Texas". The guy stopped talking in my face and turned away. A country where everyone acts like a community organizer and a friggin' bank is shut down by a strike is politically unhinged.

Unfortunately, in modern day France (and Europe in general),  "towns with large Arab populations   (who have no wish    to  integrate)"   are     increasingly the norm.

I think Polynesia has a higher obesity rate, but point taken.  Mexican food is junk food.

Anecdotally, I actually lost weight eating Mexican food regularly.  I counted my calories and only ate two meals / day.  Mexican is very filling and cheap.

I don't know if they have a national dance per se, but   the French have contributed quite a bit to the history of dance.   The minuet, the gavotte, the farandole, the rondeau, just to name a few.   And there's always the can-can.

Gettysburg was 1863. But you are correct that Grant was in Vicksburg at the time.And while Lee did retreat from Gettysburg the North did not follow.

I'm something of a Civil War buff and I've never heard or read of those expressions before; i.e., 'Lee's Retreat', 'Grant's Advance'. And while I'm no big fan of either General Lee or the Confederacy, it isn't true that Lee 'ran away' from Grant at Petersburg, the final campaign of the Civil War. Grant would continually strive to flank Lee; Lee would then move and adjust his lines to check the flanking maneuver. This went on for months until--finally--attrition through death, disease and desertion was too great and Lee could no longer hold back the Union Army. Whatever that is, it isn't 'running away'.

Go down to the area of Appomattox Courthouse. There is a trail marked with those yellow and blue historical markers and it is called Lee's Retreat. I had never heard of it until I was actually down in the area. Area folk are rather proud of it and I nearly got killed when I jokingly called it Grant's Advance.

Not quite.  Nor that the western hemisphere is on the verge of a permanent socialist majority.  What we have - I think - is another example of the populace expressing their desire for peace and plenty, and not to be bothered.*  Please show some competence in governing and administration, don't make a complete Charlie Foxtrot out of everything foreign and domestic (especially domestic), keep the country safe, prosperous and stop bothering me when I have to deal with the problems in my own life already.

 

*Rather a normal person's reaction - everyone has plenty of their own business to mind without some jackwagons in teh capital completely screwing things up and adding more for the average Joe, Jacques, or Hans to deal with.

Now I will agree that Grant gave the Confederate Arm(ies) a whuppin' at several different times and places in the Civil War--or the "Late Unpleasantness" as some of us like to think about it. But Grant was a butcher. One of the first modern generals in that regard. Cold Harbor remains a stain on his name.

Hollande wasn't elected until 2012. He has a five-year term, so if he loses the next election he will have served less time than Obama.

Yes, but the French Senate isn't popularly elected. It's elected mostly by members of the municipal councils ... that is, the councils that just had a lot of Socialist members voted off of them. So one can expect that the Socialists will be disappointed this September, too.

More relevant to popular opinion is the European Parliament elections which will be held in May. The Socialists have been running in third place in the French opinion polls for that, behind both the UMP and the FN.

378 Actually, the French know the difference between the Battle of Quatre-Bras, which occurred on June 16, 1815, and Waterloo, which was fought on June 18. First, Quatre-Bras was fought under Wellington and Ney, and was a pretty significant defeat for the British. Ney was only prevented from pursuing by the lack of reinforcements. Second, the Battle of Waterloo to the French is called the Battle of Mont St. Jean, which was the key British position, whose capture late in the day by the Armee caused Wellington's army to begin to unravel until an unanticipated offensive by Bulow's corps turned the tables.
