Chris Christie...You're Damn Right I Expanded Medicaid!
— DrewM

Via @DraftRyan2016 we have another "Christie confronts voter at town hall" video that made him so famous in his first term.

The wrinkle in this one is that while he's debating a lefty he defends himself not by making the conservative case against government healthcare but praising how much he's expanded it already.

Sure he says he hates ObamaCare but he's pretty proud that he's taken the ObamaCare money to expand Medicaid (you know the system that is a total waste of money) and boasts that NJ's Medicaid system is the 2nd most generous in the country. So you know...Conservative! Maybe even severely.

Of course being so generous with Medicaid comes at a cost in taxes and the resulting flight from New Jersey to lower tax states (via NJ refugee @johnekdahl). Now, Chrisite has done some good on taxes in NJ but to brag that their welfare benefits are so generous and he's happily expanding them is a slap to the people who have to pay for them.

Republicans want to make some made up distinction between ObamaCare Medicaid expansion and the exchanges but conservatives shouldn't let them get away with it.

What I said in 2010 about Romney's inability to take on ObamaCare because of his entanglement with MittCare applies to Chrisite or any other GOP governor who has taken ObamaCare Medicaid money.

Even if Romney does say he opposes the individual mandate, he still has said he'd take credit for Obama's health care "accomplishment". Given his background with the issue and weird statements about the law since its passage, Romney is simply damaged goods when it comes to health care.

He might still be able to come up with a convincing narrative to explain the differences between MassCare and ObamaCare as well as his role in the former. But then the debate will be about Mitt and what he thought then vs. now and whether he can be reliable going forward. Meanwhile the focus will be off Obama and the damage done by this health care scheme.

Republicans need the issue to be a clean and clear choice...we have to nominate someone who was opposed to ObamaCare from the start. Only then will the focus stay on Obama and what he has wrought.

If ObamaCare is going to be a lead GOP issue in 2016 you can't have someone on the ticket who is compromised by it.

11 While I think state-level welfare is generally a bad idea and a waste of money at best... at least it has the benefit of not being unconstitutional. If individual states want to do different, stupid, experimental stuff like the Oregon Health Plan or Michigan's "lets destroy business" scheme, ok. That's how America was always supposed to work.
At some level I think a minimum amount of public assistance is necessary and inevitable, but the further it gets from the people - moving away from the neighborhood or town to county, state, etc - the worse and more wasteful it gets.

I've long been confused by the "RINO" title, as if somehow people think the REpublican Party stood for conservative ideals except for brief, shining moments in time. Its always been like the "RINOs". Guys like Ronald Reagan were Republican in name only, by rejecting the usual GOP dogma and ideas.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at March 19, 2014 08:48 AM (zfY+H)

48 The only way he could recover from this - maybe - is that: 1) there are so many more unemployed, underemployed and/or poorer due to obama's policies, so more had to go on state funded care. Conservative policies should reverse this over time. 2) repeal obamacare; and do the "common sense" thing by covering the handful of people in medicaid that were not covered in the beginning. It wasn't 40 million. Only 15m or so, and do not include illegals. And, cut spending (anywhere) to be able to pay for all of this. Walker proves this can be done. I don't believe for one minute Christie would try to repeal. The only one I see, so far, that is maniacal about repeal is Cruz.

Four years earlier he'd have been creamed in the primaries. The political landscape has changed so radically and violently none of the old patterns or predictors are worth anything any more.
Having a horrible old man even his own party despised as his opponent probably helped Obama a bit, but at that point in history, the Republican just wasn't going to win anyway.

Posted by: alexthechick - SMOD/Orion Death Star 2016 at March 19, 2014 12:47 PM (VtjlW) IIRC, the matching funds taper down to 90% coverage or somesuch. But I see two problems with that. 1) It'll probably get cut again because at some point math wins. 2) 10% of billions is still a metric shit ton of money. Let's presume that expansion costs my state $1billion/year. That means as it tapers down, even if it stays at 90% forever, my state just took on 100 million in liabilities. Even with a state that basically burns money via government (spending 28bil/year) that is not an insubstantial part of the budget. IIRC, our state has a balanced budget rule as well, so this would totally fuck that up.

183 Between his RINO tendencies, the skeletons in his closet, and his brash demeanor I have a tough time seeing Christie winning the primary. I could see him doing well in the debates perhaps, but it seems to me he'd be a tough sell in Iowa or South Carolina. Walker or Perry. As it stands now (assuming they both run), those are our two choices. Unless we again split the conservative vote on vanity candidates and hand the nomination to a moderate, that being the True Conservative way.

OK so I don't do the Twitter thing, but "draftRyan2016" seems like it would be an entity/person somehow interested in Paul Ryan running for president?   So there is supposed to be hope for the country when figures like Ryan and Christie are actually even mentioned for the GOP nomination?  Ryan's a House staffer and always will be - impressive to the rubes but a very small character not remotely up to big jobs or big missions.  Which was never far from the surface before, but with his post-2012 meltdown became obvious.  Well, to those who actually have any first-hand serious understanding of the Beltway or the important issues.

Christie?  As if, in a country where a limp 2012 turnout to throw out the worst president in our history (by far) defines the landscape, a nasty unaccomplished self-centered small market guy from one the dumbest political wastelands in the nation can be taken seriously?

Why don't people talk up Linc Chafee or Sheila Jackson Lee for the GOP nomination?  Would make about as much political or policy sense.

192 Kasich, in Ohio, is kind of a RINO. He doesn't sell himself as almost-a-libertarian, his union-busting campaign fell flat on its ass, but by god sir when he's asked about taking the Medicaid money he at least has the decency to wince, and try to explain the cut-away fed program money he was hoping to replace with that. Plus he's undone a whole bunch of anti-business shit, and got some pro-gun rules in without backlash.

In short, he's no Scott Walker but compared to this fat turd he's Cal Coolidge meeting Rand Paul, and deserves to be about ten notches above Mel O'Creme on anybody's potential candidate list.

I've told people this before, but New Jersey already had one of the nation's most generous Medicaid programs before Christie took office.  The expansion under ACA isn't much of one for NJ.  I wasn't especially surprised or upset that Christie chose not to fight the Dems in the legislature over this small expansion.  They passed an expansion bill almost before the ink was dry on Obama's signature on the ACA.

I didn't know killing Medicaid was now a core Republican principle.

---------------------------------------

My daughter moved out of NJ because the real estate taxes were so hideous. Has 'conservative' CC done a damn thing about it since?

CC is just a fat attention getting f*ck who has risen to the highest level of his ineptitude.

Posted by: Name Withheld Upon Request at March 19, 2014 01:02 PM (oGrEy)

REAL ESTATE TAXES.  These are LOCAL taxes. They are very high in NJ because of the ridiculous number of small jusrisdictions and school districts that levy them.  Every little pissant township of 5000 people has its own fire and police department and bureaucrats. And they bleed homeowners to pay for them.  School districts also have local taxing power and that adds to the property tax burden.  The only thing the state can do is provide some rebates to homeowners, which Jon Corzine actually instituted to try to buy some votes - and he put the state into debt to fund them.  Christie killed the rebates his first 2 years in order to stop the debt financing of them and balance the state budget.  He also got the public employee pension system reformed which has saved localities a bunch of money, but not all of them have returned it to the homeowners in lower tax rates.  He can't do much about that.

The New Jersey state budget was basically a dumpster fire when Christie took office.  He's had his hands full trying to get a handle on the state's finances with a Democrat legislature that loves to borrow and spend money.  He actually was able to cut total spending his first two budgets, for the first time in like 50 years.  Spending has gone up in the last 3 budgets, mostly because of health care costs and education funding.  He's under pressure now to up the state contribution to the pension fund as he promised he would in return for getting the reforms done in 2010.

Government in New Jersey is just really fucked up.

Posted by: rockmom at March 19, 2014 09:16 AM (Q4elb)

246 Ok, so Christie: 1) Cut Planned Abortionhood funding. Good. 2) Held the line on teachers union pay increases. Good. Although that will probably just be undone whenever the next Democrat takes over, right? The underlying structural problem is still there. Instead of 2% raises every year, it's 0% for a few years, then 4% raises when the Dems get back in power. Net to the taxpayer over a decade is probably a wash. Still, holding the line is good. Anything else? Has he expanded gun rights? Has he cut down on red tape? Has he limited the power of public unions? Has he limited the power of the eco-nazis?

267 The only thing the state can do is provide some rebates to homeowners, which Jon Corzine actually instituted to try to buy some votes - and he put the state into debt to fund them. He's had his hands full trying to get a handle on the state's finances with aDemocrat legislature that loves to borrow and spend money. Posted by: rockmom at March 19, 2014 01:16 PM (Q4elb the property tax rebate program predated Corzine by several years. 268 Born the poor son of an automobile company President, Mitt grew up on the mean streets of Bloomfield Hills, playing stickball and pitching pennies with the children of other millionaires.

Working his way through Harvard Business School by saying, "Hey Dad -- I want to go to Harvard", young Mitt.....

See my point above.  He got scholarships to Harvard, wasn't Dad's money.  He went to Stanford for a year then to BYU for his undergrad.  If you look at BYU tuition it's $2,400 per semester present-day.  It's dirt cheap now and was even cheaper in the '70s.

By the time he inherited his Dad's money, he was already a millionaire, and he gave his inheritance to charity.

So he grew up wealthy, so what?  A rich kid who doesn't use Daddy's money to become rich himself is still a self-made man.

280 Unbelievable OT MI union contract gives “special consideration” to “non-Christian” teachers The contract ran from 2011 to 2012 but was extended to 2017. The teachers belong to the Ferndale Education Association, a division of theMichigan Education Association. Regarding promotion to a vacant position, it states on page 22: Should there be two (2) or more of these applicants with equal qualifications for the position and one (1) or more of these applicants with equal qualifications is a current employee, the current employee with the greatest seniority shall be assigned. Special consideration shall be given to women and/or minority defined as: Native American, Asian American, Latino, African American and those of the non-Christian faith. However, in all appointments to vacant positions, the Board’s decision shall be final. non-Christian faith? The Special Consideration filter means Not The Most Qualified. hotair

To explain, a "stimulus bill" supporter in the LA House told everyone that there was a bill coming up that was ceremonial to honor an individual, so they all voted for it. It turned out that the bill they actually filed was a measure to force Jindal to accept the stimulus money he'd attempted to reject. I voted for Romney. In my view, what really did him in was the second debate. There were seemingly innumerable times when he could've drawn blood and handily defeated Obama then and there. I could see Romney visibly restrain himself at those moments, and found myself shouting at the screen: go for it, go for it...and he never went for it. Ultimately, I think it was Romney's sense of decorum and noblesse oblige that did him in, at least in those last two debates.

Watching Romney campaign was like watching a superbly gifted athelete play in a sport he doesn't really like.

Posted by: Brandon In Baton Rouge at March 19, 2014 01:23 PM (APuJ7) Here's the full story http://tinyurl.com/mjvnzet and, btw, I asked Gabriel Malor at AoSHQ to look at this clause, and he agrees that this is very problematic. Not only does this conflict with an earlier clause in the contract forbidding this kind of discrimination, its insistence on blocking review is also troubling: It's and Ed story. --- It's a contract just for Ferndale, MI. When I looked up the city, it's a lily-white suburb of Detroit BUT has an extremely vibrant LGBT community. I'm guessing it's not a stretch to say that the LGBT community probably saw an opportunity to stick it to those "evil Christianists" when the contract came up.

--Balanced 4 straight budgets with no income tax increases.

--Killed state funding for Planned Parenthood.

--Refused to renew a millionaire's surtax enacted by Jim McGreevy that drove a bunch of rich people out of the state.

--Got a pretty massive pension/benefits reform bill passed that for the first time requires state employees and teachers to contribute to their pension plans and health insurance premiums, changed the formula for calcuating state retirees' pensions, and eliminated the more egregious double- and triple- dipping that some local officials were getting.  This resulted in the immediate retirement of about 5000 state employees, most of whom have not been replaced, so it also shrank the state workforce.

--Got a decent teacher tenure reform bill passed.

--Turned down a bunch of federal money for a boondoggle third Hudson River tunnel.

--Refused to reappoint a very liberal state Supreme Court justice who happened to be black, drawing brickbats fromt the racial grievance crowd.

--Signed a civil union bill but refused to sign a same-sex marriage bill.  Tried to get a referendum on the ballot but the courts beat him to it and legalized same sex marriage.

This may not be a stellar record to everyone, but given the almost comical level of corruption and incompetence displayed by his two predecessors, the very liberal and venal legislature he's had to deal with, and the New York Times and Philadelphia Inquirer dumping on him every chance they got, he's done a good job in my book.  I don't think many others could have done better.

I also think he has done an invaluable service in getting at least some people in America to look at Republicans differently, to see a guy who is willing to compromise with Democrats (and yes, even to suck up to a liberal President when his state is in distress),  with a sense of humor and a sense of what Americans really want out of their government,  a guy who isn't afraid to engage with popular culture or to be blunt with people.   There's a good reason why he won reelection in one of the bluest states with 65% of the vote.  We need to find more Republicans like him in other blue and purple states.

Does that mean he should be President or even the Republican nominee?  Nope.  I was on the fence about him even before the bridge scandal but now I don't want him at all even to run for President.  I might support him in 2020 if the GOP blows this next election though.

373 New JerseyÂ’s Constitution requires a balanced budget every year. Christie has met that obligation in every budget year. The major flaw with the governorÂ’s claim is that the deficit he cites never went away. And Christie now dismisses that deficit calculation as the "old way of budgeting." The $11 billion refers to a $10.7 billion structural deficit the stateÂ’s nonpartisan Office of Legislative Service projected for the fiscal 2011 budget year, when Christie proposed his first spending plan. A structural deficit measures how much money the state would need if current services and revenues remained the same and all spending obligations required by statute were fully funded. But the state does not have to meet all of its obligations since the budget supersedes statute. So although a state statute may require certain levels of spending on different programs, the governor can sign a budget that does otherwise. And thatÂ’s largely what Christie did in his first budget.

377 For the fiscal 2012 budget year, OLS projected a structural deficit of about $10.5 billion, nearly the same size as the previous fiscal year. But Christie then dismissed that calculation, calling it the "old way of budgeting." In a budget speech last year, Christie said the projected deficit "assumes no one is actually managing the budget or setting priorities. That is yesterdayÂ’s New Jersey." Now, Christie said, "the baseline is zero" for budgeting. so its a "balanced budget" with 11 Billion in unfunded obligations

That's a very valid POV on him.  His animating ideology is "can I fix this problem in a way that makes me look good?"  But some in New Jersey are thankful that he is at least trying to fix the problems, and NOT doing it in an ideological way.

Independents I know in NJ still love him and think this bridge thing is a partisan witch hunt.  They like him because he has "spoken truth to power" a/k/a the Democratic machine and the unions, and because he didn't care about anything but getting help with Sandy relief even though he pissed off Republicans with his embrace of Obama right before the election.  They figure if he has pissed off both liberals and conservatives, he's probably doing it right.  The reason the bridge thing has hurt him so badly in the polls in NJ is that it tarnishes this image of him being non-partisan and sort of above the petty crap that New Jersey politics has long been known for.

This is the way a growing number of voters think, and if we do not acknowledge that and choose candidates that can appeal to independent voters, we won't win any more elections.

404 He bought off his Democratic challenger by calling a special election and giving him a free Senate seat?

Posted by: Laurie David's Cervix at March 19, 2014 01:45 PM (kdS6q)

Um, no, Booker was never going to run against Christie, that's how they ended up with poor Barbara Buono.  What Christie did with the special election was make sure all those black voters coming out to vote for Booker wouldn't do it on his election day, and got Booker to stay out of his race.  That may have helped him get to that 65%, but not by much.  And Republicans were never going to win that Senate seat.

406 the Jersey Whale needs to ESAD...

at least politically.  no way he can win a national election, unless he runs as the Demonrat he is.

407 @406 You're putting people some knowledge again.  You gotta stop doing that.

They want their two minutes' RINO hate, dammit!

I especially love the grammar police "correcting" my usage of the word "slander" without denying the essential point that Drew was being a douchebag-ish tool toward Thomas Sowell.  Thanks for the grammar lesson, true cons!

408 Go for another romantic stroll with your BFF Obama you fat fuck. Hey Rinse Prius, you better tell him on the down low not to run. Remember, elephants have long memories, and he's pissed off a lot of them.

409 7 That Medicaid money shrinks every year. It's a Faustian deal, and I shake my head at any pol who accepts expansion. This, in spades. In fact, once the term runs out, there's no reason why the federal money couldn't go to $0 and the states who took the money would now be on the hook for the whole bill. Sadly, Rick Scott tried to take the money, but the legislature said "no". The exact opposite of the Obama monorail handout.

410 People love voting for the preferred candidates of people who make fun of other people's weight. Democrats on line 1 for you. Something about "Rush Limbaugh is a fat ass"...

411 Why people who insist that a) they are NOT Republicans and b) will NOT support the Republican nominee if their preferred candidate loses continue to insist on participating in Republican primaries and policy debates is a mystery.

If you believe 95% of elected Republicans are RINOs, remember nearly all of them were elected with most or all of the Republican vote in their state or district, so maybe it is YOU who are the "RINO."

Nobody forces you to be a Republican.  But if you don't want to be a Republican and won't support most Republicans outside your treasured few, why not just stay the heck out of our Party business.  Then you can vote - or not vote - for candidates in the general election as you so choose.

Perhaps you could spend the meantime building your own new, special, "true conservative" party, with your own rules and platforms and candidates.  Instead of just being the turd in the punch bowl in our primaries and conventions.

Is that the royal "we", you sycophantic establishment ass?

RINOs have gone full KOS/DU.

Winning hearts and minds.....

414 See, here's where the "big tent" and "run by the party membership" thing comes to be such a big lie. Vote our way or you should leave is the message of the elite GOP mainliners (most of whom have never been seen on this blog before - congressional staffers anyone?).

416 I have a better idea, why don't you unprincipled moderates just do what you're itching to do and become Democrats? Embrace it, be proud. Then you'll just have Kool Aid in your punchbowl.

417 I also enjoy the two or three people pointing me to Democrat asshole-ery as an excuse for fat jokes about Christie.  Yeah, that's right, we're not supposed to be more adult than the socialists.  We're supposed to be snicking 13-year old girls just like they are.

Hey, true cons, if the "establishment RINO" is in elected office, it isn't because of a grand conspiracy against you true cons.  It's because he won the fucking election.  You know, got more votes than the other candidates.

Romney was the nominee because he got more votes than the other candidates.  Math, how does it work again?

I'm leaving as soon as I can find a decent gig where I want to go.

If this is how Northeastern'ers want to live, bon appetit.

But I don't want to be here when the bubble bursts - and it is going to burst like a boil.

People think that Detroit is an abberation, and Flint is "just another Detroit."   They don't talk about New Jersey's sewers: Camden, Newark, Trenton, and the surrounding dead zones.

New Jersey gets good press because there is still a LOT of money here.

For now.

I'm not making any jokes about this man's weight, but... wow.

POTUS is arguably as stressful a job as exists.  There are a lot of jobs with higher stress, like combat, air traffic control, etc., but they get breaks.  When you're elected POTUS, you're "on" for at least 4 years.

When you take breaks, like our current Child In Chief, you get the disaster that we have now.  No, if you do the job properly, it's a grind like no other.

I wouldn't vote for Christie if he looked like Romney.  Don't get me wrong, I think he is as liberal as Al Franken...

But even if I were inclinded to vote for him, I'd really want to know who his VP candidate was, because I don't know if he could survive 4 years, given his physical shape.

Posted by: RobM1981 at March 19, 2014 11:32 AM (lV1tZ)

422 Dems want to drive us off a cliff at top speed. RINOs like Christie want to do so at moderate speed. A pox on all of them. W want my damn country back.

423 I know politics ain't beanbag, but does everything with Christie have to end in a "heated exchange?" There's a difference between having conviction and calmly, firmly acting on it, and being a hothead who can't countenance the very existence of a differing opinion. It's stooping to conquer, and it's not attractive. In this latter sense he reminds me a lot of some of the obnoxious harpies on the Left.

Another "eat your broccoli & STFU, conservatives!" nominee?

And this one is different from Romney-bot & McPain because...?
