Chris Christie on BridgeGate: “What I've seen today for the first time is unacceptable. I am outraged and deeply saddened..."
— Ace

"For the first time," he makes sure to say.

I didn't think this story was going anywhere, that it was just yet another concocted lefty-blog bit of nonsense.

The allegation against Christie is that he attempted to punish the mayor of Fort Lee, NJ, for not endorsing him for re-election. And that he did so by ordering lanes of the George Washington Bridge shut down, making havoc of traffic.

Christie has previously claimed this was part of routine traffic administration or something.

Well, an email from one of his top aides seems to confirm that some political motive was afoot.

This will probably sink Christie.

“Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee,” Bridget Anne Kelly, one of three deputies on Christie’s senior staff, wrote to David Wildstein, a top Christie executive at the Port Authority, on Aug. 13, about three weeks before the closures. Wildstein, the official who ordered the closures and who resigned last month amid the escalating scandal, wrote back: “Got it.”

Other top Christie associates mentioned in or copied on the email chain, all after the top New York appointee at the authority ordered the lanes reopened, include David Samson, the chairman of the agency; Bill Stepien, ChristieÂ’s re-election campaign manager and the newly appointed state GOP chairman; and Michael Drewniak, ChristieÂ’s spokesman.

I'll direct you to Hot Air to read the second quote, which is Nuclear.

No, Christie is not in the email chains. But these are his aides, all in agreement on this tactic. Enjoying themselves over traffic snarls, smiling about schoolbusses full of kids stuck in traffic.

AllahPundit sums up Phase 2 of the scandal:

. The next step will be for Kelly to resign (as well as everyone ccÂ’d on her messages?) followed by the requisite Christie statement of ignorance and disappointment.

Well, per my headline, Christie has just issued a statement of ignorance and disappointment.

"What Ive seen today for the first time is unacceptable. I am outraged and deeply saddened to learn that not only was I misled by a member of my staff, but this completely inappropriate and unsanctioned conduct was made without my knowledge. One thing is clear: this type of behavior is unacceptable, and I will not tolerate it because the people of New Jersey deserve better. This behavior is not representative of me or my Administration in any way, and people will be held responsible for their actions.”

Jeebuz.  This has been simmering in the NYC radio market for a while and I thought it was a nothing.  Christie, plausibly to me, said "what do I care about the Mayor of Fort Lee's endorsement?  He's a Democrat anyway."

The guy who actually caused the traffic jam said it was for a traffic study, then didn't have any record of what he was studying, so that guy clearly had to go fast and did.  But how did these phooking eedjits put all their cackling in e-mail?

20 Sorry, Ace, gotta quote it: “They are the children of Buono voters,” Wildstein wrote, making a reference to Barbara Buono, the Democratic candidate for governor, who lost to Christie in a landslide in November. Doesn't that sound like an administration we all know and love? If the president were a Republican, he would be accused of creating a climate or something. This will not go away because it's part and parcel of the image of Christie -- the one that he wants to create. He's a tough, hard-nosed New Joisey fighter. Well, this is what people like this do. Yes, he will survive as governor of New Jersey. I think this sinks him for president, certainly in the Iowa caucuses (where his schtick doesn't go over well, anyway).

38 @derekahunter is killing it on twitter right now drawing comparisons to Obama's IRS stuff etc. My opinion is more aligned with @redsteeze. I don't want Christie to be our nominee and I do not like him running the RGA, but I would rather have the MSM and NJ/NYers bruise him a bit without conservatives wasting a lot of time participating in that. To me this is truly a "local story" and not worth a lot of attention by national opinion makers. I don't think it helps the GOP to defend him, but participating in the feeding frenzy seems unnecessary and not particularly helpful either. Once he's been humbled, the GOP can tell him to go sit in the corner with a dunce cap - ie: not run in 2016, support the eventual nominee (better than he did Romney), and step down from the RGA chairmanship.

He's a Democrat anyway." Honestly, I think he didn't. But I think people under him found it quite easy and quite satisfying to abuse their power, as political people with power so often do. The Left thinks that if you can put a Superman in charge of everything -- the best, the brightest, the most honest and uncorruptible -- then they will bring about utopia. There are no such people. The "smart" people aren't much smarter than you are. The "bright" people sound a lot brighter than they are. The "honest" people lie just as much as you do. The "uncorruptible" have their price as well. And even if you did find such people, reality has a way of interfering with their schemes.

If I liked Christie, of course if Christie had liked Cucci he would have at least just kept his mouth shut and if nothing else used that media spotlight and impending leadership in the RGA to send a few kind words to Cucci on TV....

106 Once he's been humbled, the GOP can tell him to go sit in the corner with a dunce cap - ie: not run in 2016, support the eventual nominee (better than he did Romney), and step down from the RGA chairmanship. Posted by: Y-not (@MoxieMom) at January 08, 2014 04:56 PM (zDsvJ)

What support did he actually give Romney again? My takeaway from his RNC convention speech was that it came across less as an endorsement of Romney and more a promotional kickstarter for Christie 2016. Same with the 2012 Sandy Obama Love-In. But if anyone has the political hucksterism to salvage his career, its Christie; his attempts to do so will be interesting to watch. Media slobbered on him in 2012, how they treat him now will give us a taste of 2016...unless they purposely keep their claws sheathed so as to help keep their chosen GOP nominee at the front of the pack.

These are the things that resonate with people - things they can relate to their own experiences.  Stuff that happens in far off lands, or to "other people", or that is too wonky have no effect.

But imagine finding out that traffic jam that screwed up your day was caused by some pol (or his staff) trying to score points or punish another pol (or campaign).  It would be like finding out you can't keep your insurance, or that congressmen don't have to have money in their bank accounts in order to write a check and have it clear.

He may well be done because of this, we'll see.

Then you conclude the whole tirade by doing absolutely jack-shit about it and calling it a "phony crisis" a few weeks later.

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I don't think this will sink Christie. I also don't think he personally ordered retaliation against the recalcitrant mayor of Ft. Lee. However, I do think his staff did what they thought would please the boss. I also think/know that a leader's style and habits of thought spread throughout any given organization.  I saw that particular dynamic in both the Army and later in the corporate world. Sorry for the Nixon comparison, but the Watergate break-in happened while Nixon was enjoying a double-digit lead over McGovern in the polls--even before McGovern made the disastrous decision to repudiate Eagleton as his VP pick on the Democratic Party ticket--and later trounced McGovern in the election. There was no sound, logical reason why anyone on Nixon's staff--even indirectly--would endanger that commanding lead by committing an incredibly stupid crime that could implicate the President, but it happened anyway.

People do stupid shit all the time. Applying logic to an irrational decision or action only shows that the decision or action was irrational.

280 How did this ever make sense in any way?

The mayor has nothing to do with the bridge at all, how would he be blamed for traffic problems if the Ports Authority closes lanes?

How would the mayor be hurt by traffic jams that involve 99.9% of drivers who do NOT live in his town?

This can't be the easiest way to punish a Mayor if you have the full resources of the Governor's office.  Those involved should be fired for stupidity if nothing else.

285 Its the SYSTEM... not which team is in control of the system. Posted by: The Godfather... at January 08, 2014 05:23 PM

I'm going to disagree...in part.

The system works. But some of those in power have made a habit of ignoring safeguards and controls built into the system. Their enablers (the media, etc.) have let this happen. Worse, some of those in the "conservative" media (think: NRO, the Weakly Standard, RudeState and Tepid Air) have not raised any meaningful opposition to it, either.

The "cure" is simple in concept, difficult in execution: impeach, indict, try, and imprison the lawbreakers. Rinse and repeat as necessary. Make our current crooks of both parties pay for their crimes. That might encourage the next crop of political hacks to pay a little more attention to the rules.

There is, however, one thing I find potentially dubious.

One of the more "damning" emails, we are told, include this: "...time for some traffic problems"

That's the only part of the phrase I have seen, maybe there is more. But it could be taken out of context. Perhaps the front part of the sentence is missing?

For example: "I might be late for our meeting; give me time for some traffic problems."

Even those I support must be able to answer, reasonably, confrontational questions from those I don't. It's only the most patently offensive or designated hacks who deserve outright "return abuse". Christie lacks appropriate tact. And now we find he (because personnel is policy) abuses authority and will do so even for the most trivial things. If that isn't bad enough, individuals involved are also pushing to put Section 8 housing into better areas because of studies showing what growing up in poverty-stricken areas does to kids. "There was a missing child that day. The police had trouble conducting that search because they were tied up directing traffic," says Jan Goldberg, a Fort Lee councilman who works with local emergency personnel. Police found the missing child, a four-year-old. "But with the streets in the condition they were, I would venture to say that the search took longer," Goldberg says.

Ila Kasofsky, a Fort Lee councilwoman, tells Mother Jones that ambulances and other emergency vehicles could not get through the gridlock. In the aftermath of the lane closures, Kasofsky says she spoke with a Fort Lee resident who couldn't get over the bridge to support her husband through major surgery. Another Fort Lee woman was unable to pick up her son after his dialysis session.

Police Chief Keith Bendul cited these problems when he spoke to New Jersey press in September. "On Monday, while all this was going on, we had to contend with a missing four-year-old, a cardiac arrest requiring an ambulance, and a car running up against a building," he said. "What would happen if there was a very serious accident?"

Marcus and Beck are good friends; first time I ever heard of Marcus was on Beck's radio show, castigating the punks that shot Marcus' dog. Beck's been dropping Lone Survivor movie tidbits on his radio show, such as:

Apparently when Marcus met with the movie producers, he told them that if they did anything in the movie to dishonor his friends that had died, who were to be portrayed in the film, he would personally hunt them down and kill them. Bwahaha I would have loved to have been in the room at that moment, seen the execs faces. Never cross a Seal. Haven't seen the movie but apparently the execs kept their word; who wouldn't after that?

He allowed a warts and all portrayal for his character in the film, versus wanting the cleaned up, canonizing/saintly portrayal some ppl might have asked for when their story is hollywoodized. So he actually come across as a jerk at times in the film, and doesn't mind, wants the truth out there.

His wife got to finally see a screening. They had talked about his time over there, but nothing could prepare her for what seeing what it actually must have been like for her husband. Really affected her to see her husband's nightmares on the big screen.

Thought you guys might be interested in those tidbits, if you haven't heard them already.

If you look at newjersey.com the emails are not in chronological order. They published that first. Then they go back to June.

That actually fits my picture of Christies persona quite well: in the veep search the Romney people stayed away from him, among other reasons, because he is such a fucking diva. As attorney in NJ he regularly went over budget on travel expenses, because he liked to stay in fancy hotels and he is known these days for being the Gov of a mid-sized state who travels with a presidential-sized entourage. Add the somewhat cringy youtube self-promotion and its not hard to believe that the fat diva would order such things out of spite and pettiness.

355 And it really might have been just his staff. Not everything that goes on under Obama's regime is really initiated by Obama. So there's that.

Maybe, but his spokesman and campaign manager were copied on the e-mails.  If he didn't know, he should've.  Or deliberately maintained plausible denyability.

..........I don't think this will take him out. He's an arrogant prick and he'll still run. (Unfortunately) At least he's getting a little taste of the press' ass. Fluffy should ask McCain about how quick they'll turn on you. They've only begun taking people out. A chink in the armor. Yea but not a fatal blow. There's allot of blubber to get through with this one.

Posted by: Minnfidel at January 08, 2014 05:44 PM (FciyD)

Probably true but it's still the Dem's making a mistake in trying taking out a pretty unelectable Republican so far before the primaries.  The guys kind of an ass, I'm definitely more interested in Scott Walker who did a lot of the same stuff but didn't make everyone into enemies doing it.

Maybe it's just a good scandal too early so Hillary had to use it or lose it but it'd have really screwed things up for Repubs if this just simmered until the primaries were in motion.

FUCK these people.  This was an action by the Port Authority of NY/NJ which runs the damn bridge.  The Christie Administration does not run the bridge!  And it wasn't even a closure of lanes on the actual bridge, but closure of two of the three ramp lanes going on to the bridge.

Fucking media.

It's amusing to the MFM straining after the mote in Christie's eye, while ignoring the beam - hell, the *forest* - in Obama's. But that's what propaganda machines do.

Of course, this is only the mildest taste of the treatment Christie would get were he to become the GOP nominee.

360 168 / Some dems do like Christie -- any damage to him helps Hillary. I'm good if this is the beginning of the end for Christie. I like Scott Walker - unintimidated - has fought the mud. If there are damaging skeletons they would be out by now.

361 It's New Jersey. A politician from there being dirty is about as much surprise as a Chicago politician being dirty. And this comes from someone living in one of the corruption capitols of the US. Posted by: Brandon In Baton Rouge Absolutely true story: When I was in my 20s I worked for a company in Texas that had its HQ in Jersey. My boss had a law degree and was being transferred there. His assistant refused to go. I was called in and offered the job. When I asked what the deal was he explained that Organized Crime™ was stealing 20% of raw material shipments but had approached the company to say that a deal could be worked out with the Union and a "little off the top" for the Mob. He was being sent to negotiate. Apparently that was normal business practice then. I did not go and left the company shortly after.

363 Amazing an Administration would be that petty and just plain stupid.

Over a mayor endorsement nobody cared about for a race they knew they were going to win by nearly 20 points? And they would talk about it over emails?

I can understand being underhanded and playing dirty IF there's some sort of huge payoff (not necessarily endorsing that behavior, but I get it) But to do this just for spite?

Posted by: McAdams at January 08, 2014 02:05 PM (50t0S)

366 I'm tired of all these power hungry establishment GOP folks who believe it is okay to point the gun of the government at common folk for this garbage. Romney believed it is okay to point a gun at my head and make me spend tens of thousands of dollars on something I don't want, Jindal thinks it's okay to point his gun at my head to make me sell milk at the higher price he deems is suitable, and Christie, well, let's just say I've had enough of these establishment GOP fascists. Can we get a real conservative? Palin are you running?

Posted by: doug at January 08, 2014 02:13 PM (uJ8q7)

Christie ran as a reformer and he is either stupid or a power abuser.

I can't control the media or the mules I can control the GOP as far as my vote counts.

The K Street "Bearfuckers" GOP has destroyed our historic ethics advantage.....

the McCain gang gets the protection the media usually gives donks and then acts awed when the media nails 'em in the ass in the general....

372 so if I understand this article, the punishment of political foes using the power of the goverment agencies is a bad thing, possibly a scandal that would disqualify a person from being a president and also, I didnt know a thing about this until i saw it on the news is a lame excuse, and i had no idea that all of my underlings were working in concert and may have accidentally resulted in a major inconvenience for my foe but its a complete coincidence isnt acceptable either.  Perhaps Christie should have promoted all the cronies involved.  That seems to work for BHO.

You can't come out after a 50-7 blowout and say "That game wasn't how our team plays". And I don't believe he didn't know about it, any more I believe the IRS commits criminal acts against the President's political enemies without some rational basis for the belief that the President will look the other way.

"He's quite the arrogant SOB with, apparently, a streak of petty vindictiveness. Recall the tantrums during the previous GOP convention. If you deny/challenge/question him - just that - he turns nasty.

Imagine what he'd do on policy that mattered to him personally.

Very dangerous. He is not an acceptable politician."
