Claim: Chris Christie Knew About Lane Closings

Before getting to the New York Times article, we should note who this man is-- something the New York Times forgets to remind you of until the article's end.

In the beginning of the article, they tell you he's an old Christie friend and a former official at the Port Authority.

But it's only at the end of the article they remember to tell you: David Wildstein, the man making this claim, is one of the two people Christie fired in the matter. (Well, Kelley woman was fired; Wildstein was asked to resign.)

That doesn't make what he's saying untrue. It does seem to be worth a mention before reporting his allegations.

Christie Knew About Lane Closings, Ex-Port Authority Official Says

Does that name sound familiar? It should. She's a frequent offender as regards egregious partisan Democratic bias. For example, she made the claim that when Jason Matera spoke in his normal voice -- a voice I've heard a dozen times -- it was a racist parody of a black person or something.

In fact it's just a Queens accent, and his normal way of speaking. I've never heard him not speak with a Queens accent.* (Sorry, Jason.)

But yes, she is the New York Times' go-to gal when they want a silly attack made on conservatives or the Tea Party. So it doesn't surprise me she fails to mention Wildstein's possible emotional investment (and his possible legal investment) in this until her final sentence.

The former Port Authority official who personally oversaw the lane closings on the George Washington Bridge in the scandal now swirling around Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey said on Friday that the governor knew about the lane closings when they were happening, and that he had the evidence to prove it.

In a letter released by his lawyer, the official, David Wildstein, a high school friend of Mr. Christie’s who was appointed with the governor’s blessing at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which controls the bridge, described the order to close the lanes as “the Christie administration’s order” and said “evidence exists as well tying Mr. Christie to having knowledge of the lane closures, during the period when the lanes were closed, contrary to what the governor stated publicly in a two-hour press conference” three weeks ago.

“Mr. Wildstein contests the accuracy of various statements that the governor made about him and he can prove the inaccuracy of some,” the letter added.

Whatever the truth of the claim, we now know that Christie's version of events will be challenged by at least one of the other players. (And Bridget Kelley also seemed to signal her desire to fight back, as her friends told the New York Times (IIRC) that she was a "team player" and wouldn't exercise her own judgment because, you know, she's Catholic.)

Which makes White Whitey-White Kate Zernike's immediate thought -- he's not speaking with the upper-class Non-Regional Diction that all my white Manhattan friends use, and therefore, his Distastefully Ethnic accent must be a grotesque parody of minority -- sort of racist in and of itself, doesn't it?

My Own Correction: I misread the tweet and thought he said a correction had been confessed.

But this is the New York Times. They make a fetish out of "admitting" corrections on tiny things (misspelled names, transposed digits in a date) so that you think they must also correct the big things.

In fact, the bigger the mistake is, the less likely it is that the New York Times will acknowledge it.

But if they inadvertently report that David Wildstein lives in, say, Rumson, when he was actually born there but lives in Fairlawn, oh, they'll make a big deal about correcting that.

So Zernike's claim that Wildstein has, himself, "evidence" of Christie's alleged lie has been deleted, but the New York Times does not acknowelge the correction.

I also erred in originally stating the headline had been changed. It wasn't the headline that was changed, but the lede sentence.

A while back when the Tea Party was ascendent, I think it was was in '09, our Rotary Club had a speaker, a guy with the Tea Party, headquartered next county up in far upstate NY. I recall his talk and his demeanor, and the flavor of the q and a session that followed. He was an excellent speaker and presenter, and a very mild mannered and soft-spoken man. All his points were economic ones. Taxes and the size of government. Not one single social issue was on his plate. I believe this to be the main core of the Tea Party manifesto. Taxation. Spending. Size of government. Period. Yet in recent pollings, the Tea Party is hated and reviled by a majority of those polled. The progressive media and the democrats sure have won this, in demonizing the Tea Party. They have tarred and feathered the Tea Party using race, gender, marriage, sex, and sexual preference labels, to the extent that the LIV class believes it outright.

92 The "news" behind the story is a letter by the lawyer of that fired guy, saying the State ought to pay the lawyer's bill for him, because there's a serious conflict of interest going on in the investigation...because among other things, his client claims Christie lied about not knowing, and claims that some of his client's allegations have evidence to back them up. He's not trying to prove anything, except to pressure the State of New Jersey to pay his bill. From this the press is making the assumption that the guy has some evidence that Christie lied. Which his lawyer doesn't actually claim.

How couldn't Krispy know? *** I had inquired, on twitter, as to whether he had claimed to not know of the bridge closure itself, or claimed to have not known about the illegitimacy of the closing. I was told that he has zero wiggle room. Not only did he deny knowing it was closed, he denied knowing that it even went to Ft. Lee where the mayor in question resides. I imagine, for the governor of NJ, that's the equivalent of me not knowing that a bridge in downtown Jax crosses into downtown Jax.

I can't remember ever , while sitting in the traffic jam, blaming either a mayor or governor for the traffic. His style was kind of refreshing when I was first hearing about him. Then all the stuff where he badmouthed significant portions of the party. The bloom kind of came off the rose then. Walker is looking pretty good right now. Then again, I thought Fred Thompson would be an obvious choice.

256 I personally don't care what happens to Christie.  My husband and I would never support him because of his pandering photos with obama (unforgivable in our view) before last pres.election and his stance on immigration.  It would be fascinating  to see how fast the media would cease interest in this story if they realized many conservatives do not support him anyway, and how some conservatives think, if this story pans out,  he got what was coming to him.   The msm does not want to support an agenda that doesn't really "stick it" to conservatives.

I have concerns about what signals that sends. For example, if I may speak rather bluntly here, the suicidal person leaves behind casualties in his wake. I do not wish the suicidal to do what many of them do, which is, to use other people for short term emotional support (which is wrenching for them, *especially* if the suicide is actually undertaken) without respecting their own human obligation to the parties helping them-- which is to seek help Not just talk about maybe seeking help, but to actually seek it. I don't think I'm letting any cats out of any bags when i say that Shredded Chi has been shaken up by this and is distraught. As are others, like Y-Not. I can only analogize suicidal thoughts to the ones I had as a kid when I thought about running away. My thoughts were these: "And THEN they'll realize how much they loved me. And THEN they'll be sorry they didn't give me more." I do not want to write a post which suggests to any possible suicides that such a reaction -- which I have to guess is somewhere lurking in their minds (though I do not know this for a fact, or even as a well-considered hypothesis) -- will be forthcoming were one to end it all. This sort of positive reinforcement, I think, would tend to encourage a deeply negative result. I have been seeking counsel from various parties I think have a good amount of emotional sense. So far the advice has been mixed, but many (especially women, it turns out) do think that some sort of post is warranted and advisable.

A swath of destruction.  I've seen it happen unfortunately more than once.  It's happened in my family, to my friends.  No one who has been in the wake of a suicide ever feels the same again.  It causes pain, anger and more than anything, guilt.

I'm having a difficult time today, especially commenting on this, because anything I could type would come out sounding harsh and unfeeling.  I guess I've just seen and experienced the results and the toll it takes on the living too much. 

I pray for his family and daughter.  I pray they find peace in their lives.

Shredded chi was in a pretty black place only a few weeks ago, I'd hate to see this throw him back there.

 

I'm well-versed in breaking the news about the death of a loved one, fortunately it is rarely from suicide.  But I'm no grief counselor, would never claim to be.

 

Oh, I would say it is normal to feel some resentment towards a suicide, because they have done something very selfish and insured that they do not have to deal with the mess left behind, which can destroy those closest to him or her.  But obviously there is more to it than that.

Don't post on here often but when I do it's typically as a sock.  No, not the argumentative  Marxists who  stop by from time to time smelling of stale Chitos.  While not an overly active poster, I damn near live on the site.  Great commentary and tons of laughs.  For that, I thank you all!!


Concerning Joffen, I was impressed with the compassion and truly caring spirit of the many who tried to help him.  Some went so far as to contact him.  Rest assured you did your best.  Even professionals have difficulty dealing with those who would do themselves harm.  I know  from experience as our daughter's high school boyfriend committed suicide because he was not getting his way.  Sad truth but you all did the best you could and God bless you all for trying.

Very normal.  And apparently healthy to admit it.  I worked at a suicide and crisis center for a couple of years and they would sometimes ask us if we were pissed about certain tough calls and if we said "no",  it sent up a red flag.  You were kind of encouraged to vent some of that anger or frustration there with the other staff.

Actually, that isn't the reason that I personally get pissed off.

It's because of the selfishness.  They may be rid of their pain (at least their earthly pain), but everyone who surrounded them now has this unrelenting burden of guilt and pain to carry for the rest of their lives that is not fair.

ace, I will tell you that as an ER doctor, I don't think I am under that much more stress than Brietbart was.  Yes, once in a while I literally hold someone's life in my hands, and I get accused of idiocy or worse daily by patients or families who don't understand why things are done the way they are, but neither do I have people seeking to destroy me and my livelihood on a daily basis for merely speaking my mind.  He could have and should have given himself some time to unplug though, maybe it would have saved him.

496 I never mind the upbeat and/or off topic threads. In fact, I enjoy them even when I can't participate because i don't know enough about the topics. And people are always affected by a suicide. It's like rings from a stone thrown. The people closest are most affected but the ripples hit everyone. I have had to deal with suicides of family members, friends, people connected with folks in a congregation I served and people I didn't know so well. About 10 years ago I had a colleague take her life. All I knew about her was that she was very funny and very energetic and I would occasionally speak to her at our denominational meetings, and yet when I heard that she had stopped taking her meds for bipolar disorder, checked herself into a hotel and committed suicide I felt terrible. So anyone who's had any dealings with joffen on this board will be affected and the ones who talk to him personally by phone will be having a very hard time. Suicide is one of those cases when truly as John Donne wrote, "No man is an island."

Amen.  I've been down the dark road of depression but I never got lost enough to consider suicide because I knew the devastation and guilt that I would leave behind.  I've struggled but medication,counseling, good friends, children I love,  and a profound faith in God has been my salvation.

This is along the reason why I support helmet laws for bi- and motorcyclists.  Some here say, let 'em do what they want so long as I don't have to pay for them.  However, they leave a lot of casualties behind who have to care for an invalid, who may not even be able to carry on a conversation, and all the emotional grief that comes with it.  At least with suicide you (others) can carry on but with a brain-damaged cripple, someone's going to have devote their life to caring for this person all because a helmet violated their "freedom".

Been there myself...was numb about it for a long time afterward.

The smell of bleach still triggers the memory of it.

 

My BIL did it with a shotgun, in a bathroom full of white tile.

So, I'm not a big fan of horror movies with a lot of blood and guts.

 

Someone had to do it though, and the rest of the family was reeling.

 

Here's the thing, though...

If you've lost someone who was fighting for their life, and wanted to Live, fighting for it...and lost that fight...

Then it's hard not to feel a little pissed at someone who threw theirs away.

I'd also like to think that if I ever got to that place I would turn to a professional. I have some great friends and family who I know would be there for me as I would for them. Real depression often carries a stigma and people don't always seek help for it. It sneaked up on me in a case of one event building upon another and all it took was one trigger and, suddenly and violently, it was upon me. I pray to God I never experience anything like it again. When I was looking for an eloquent quote about depression, most of what I found was horseshit about stiff upper lip and smiling through the pain. It told me that the people flapping their lips had no ckufing clue what they were talking about. It's not about sucking it up, is it?

As an aside, you do know that true secular materialists eventually go insane, right?  Case in point, a very famous 19th century author stated that his view of the worst kind of mental torture a man could go through would be to perform an obviously meaningless task, day after day, week after week.

 

Well, the nazis would put that theory to the test in a Hungarian (I think) concentration camp.  The Jews, formerly making munitions, were instead assigned to spend the entire day moving one pile of sand to the other corner of the camp.  And then back again to the original spot the next day.  And the next day back to the other corner again.  Day after day after day for weeks this went on.

 

Until eventually, the Jews went mad, and one by one threw themselves on the electrified fences or committed suicide by rushing the guards. The commandant remarked that there soon would be no need from the crematoria.

 

Well, if there is no afterlife, isn't everything we do just a meaningless task, signifying nothing.  Again and again and again.  Food for thought.

That said, the political and cultural situation we are living in right now does sometimes give us all a sense of hopelessness about the future of our country.  As someone who battles depression myself, sometimes I just need to step away from the internet for a season, to settle my spirit.  Otherwise I can get overwhelmed.

This is the last thing a suicidal person is thinking about. People are trained to handle this. There are ways to get people physically committed if they are suicidal. If memory serves...Joffen was an ardent Perry supporter in 2011.

He posted a lot about and was cheerful about the prospect of Perry as President.

 

When Perry dropped out, Joffen's posts became despondent and full of despair.

It became apparent that the fix was in for Romney...and that seemed to make it worse.

 

He later started making posts about what was going on with his divorce.

 

It's the internet.

We don't have any way of knowing if someone is being truthful or not.

 

A lot of people reached out to Joffen.

I feel bad that I didn't do more of it.

 

In my defense, I've been burned before on the internet...by trusting people and then finding out it was all a lie.

 

The SMOD stuff. The "Let it burn" stuff...

We do that as a sort of comic relief, I know.

But maybe some people don't know that.

623 I'm not sure why Christie knowing and saying he didn't know would come as a surprise to anyone.  The dems/libs/left does stuff like this on a daily basis and no one blinks an eye.  The republicans/conservatives/righties have to get across to people that they are human and that humanity makes them fall prey to being a politician, just like the dems/libs/lefties.  The rep/conservatives/righties are always held to a higher standard than the other side.  Maybe it would be best if they educated the country about what it means to aspire to something, to try and rise above, to always try to be better.  Maybe they should explain that they aren't trying to impose a set of values on everyone else, but rather trying to persuade everyone that the country would be a much better place is everyone tried everyday to be their best they can be.
