Closing Time Open Thread
— Ace

Via Instapundit, Hall & Oates' Rich Girl wasn't about a girl.

No no no, I don't mean that. Hall's girlfriend Sara Allen told him about a rich guy she'd dated, some kind of waffle house heir, and he wrote a song about the guy. But he realized "Rich Girl" sounded better than "Rich Guy." (Also, he couldn't get in the "Rich bitch" line in the fade-out ad-lib. By the way, he'd never get away with that today.)

Via @allahpundit, McDonald's is finally considering extending breakfast hours past 10:30 am. Everyone loves them some McDonald's breakfast.

This is a good piece on the Ukrainian uprising, about which I know so little.

Did you know this about Russia's future plans? Because I didn't.

The future of this protest movement will be decided by Ukrainians. And yet it began with the hope that Ukraine could one day join the European Union, an aspiration that for many Ukrainians means something like the rule of law, the absence of fear, the end of corruption, the social welfare state, and free markets without intimidation from syndicates controlled by the president.

The course of the protest has very much been influenced by the presence of a rival project, based in Moscow, called the Eurasian Union. This is an international commercial and political union that does not yet exist but that is to come into being in January 2015. The Eurasian Union, unlike the European Union, is not based on the principles of the equality and democracy of member states, the rule of law, or human rights.

On the contrary, it is a hierarchical organization, which by its nature seems unlikely to admit any members that are democracies with the rule of law and human rights. Any democracy within the Eurasian Union would pose a threat to PutinÂ’s rule in Russia. Putin wants Ukraine in his Eurasian Union, which means that Ukraine must be authoritarian, which means that the Maidan [protest movement] must be crushed.

Oh and by the way: A puppy emailed me. He says he's gonna kick your ass.

No seriously he's bringing a friend:

The dog pics via @CuteEmergency, as usual.

Now I'm going to link "Closing Time." You will say, "My Lord, that song is old, and overplayed, and overrated."

And I'll say to you: These things may all be true, but I thought that at the time it was actually current. It's only now, years later, I've heard the lyrics and thought they were pretty damn sharp. Particularly this one: "Now is the time to go out to all the places where you will be from."

Over-clever? Too precious? Too cute by half? Eh, I'd be proud of it if I'd written it!

So I agreed with you then, and thought "Oh here's that stupid song again," but ten years later, now I think this is a good song.

106 I used to be a server in a high end restaurant, Val Kilmer came in with a bunch of people, drank the Hell out of all the old single malt. They stayed after everyone else was gone so I played dj for them. He wanted to hear any Hall and Oates but we didn't have that. But we did have the sound track for "the doors" I thought it was funny, no one else did including the owner of the restaurant. Hall and damned Oates

111 Last night was a decent episode, but it really only took care of necessary business, advancing the plot to where we knew it was going, the 2012 timeframe, and the return to the investigation. Most of it was predictable. The big revelation about the Cohle-Hart fight was, you know. Who didn't see that coming? They did nothing during the mass starvations in the 1920's and '30's, the World will do nothing now. Putin knows it. He is biding his time. The revolution in Ukraine may fall apart on its own, due to the disparate factions involved. He can then waltz in and claim to be a savior. Enough stupid people in the world will accept it, and "Reporting for doody" Kerry will just gulp and mutter. We will do nothing, because this does not help Michelle's kids.

She said this: Clearly, some Harvard students still believe that TFA's model of recruiting young idealists, throwing them into five weeks of intensive training, and then placing them into schools in neighborhoods very unlike the ones they came from is truly the answer to everything from income inequality to underfunded public school systems. I have read some rumor-mill stuff about how units that were brought back from the sandbox to rest and refit had then, once back to fighting strength, been sent out to the NTC.

To determine how well they were able to deal with traditional battle tasking of the sort they had previously been good at.

And they got absolutely pounded flat, even by the NTC OPFOR's standards of routinely putting the hurt on their visitors.

210 Higher tuition is a must if you want quality education programs such as this.. The event page for the yearly production declares that the play “celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives.” However, according to the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, a group that focuses promoting female leadership, The Vagina Monologues glorifies “lesbianism, prostitution, perpetual self-gratification, and orgasmic chanting as an exercise of empowerment.” [...] One monologue, entitled “Reclaiming C**t,” encourages the audience to chant the word “c**t” repeatedly. Another monologue, “The Woman Who Loved to Make Vaginas Happy,” describes an adult woman who finds her life calling as a lesbian prostitute. Is our children learning. WZ

I haven't read the books Justified is based on, but unless there are strict contractual rules it could be anything goes. I loved the Southern Vampire Chronicles; goofy murder mysteries with vampires. I loved vampire Elvis. But True Blood went down a darker path and ruined the charm of the books. Also, it felt in the end like Harris was writing more novels in the series to give the show characters to work with if they chose and to cash her residual checks, not to craft well plotted books. Sad times.

I am not sure what it says about you, but it does say to me that I pretty much went to any concert I could in my daze of yore. The bass player of Jethro Tull flirted with me (I was on the row he could see, as the first couple were below stage). Ian Anderson got po'd that the guy was slowing down things talking to me. I think his name was Jonathan Hammer Hammer or something. I was invited to a party afterwards but my friends (wisely) would not let me go, which was probably a good thing, all things considered and I was like Ellie May Clampet at the time and not wise to these things. It was my only chance at groupie. rats.

351 I am confident we can man the sky with drones, made of balsa wood, recycled from wooden fragments and powered on solar and wind thingies. They will each be manned with teeny tiny little bombs that do not kill but emit a peaceful fragrance of patchouli, bringing the tribal hostiles to a halt. No longer will we be criticized for our collateral damage! Nobel Peace Prize II.

The savings of cutting our air fleet are enormous and will provide the ill and poor, or poor and ill, or, as we say in the WH, Illpo, with added blessings of food stamps for marijuana and lobster rolls. We cut from the military to give to the poor, as did Robin Hood.

My friends, John McCain was right! We are in good hands with BarryO. He had a dream, that all men and nations would be the same level and have the same chances. All. Of course he did not figure on the Chinese and our trillions of dollar debt and their bazillion man army, but hear me out! We are no longer burdened with terrorism. That is old school common core thinking.  Al Qaeda is on the run and has been decimated or assimilated or some kind of imated. Maybe constipated or urinated. Unsure. Where was I? Oh, yes, fear not, you have nothing to fear but fear itself. Karma sutra, we will find our chakras and nirvanna. This is a win-win to reduce our forces while building our domestic surveillance of all Americans. Peace. COEXIST.

Yes, he does a bit. But, to be fair, English Bob may have been an arrogant big mouth, with no sense of diplomacy, but the bugger could shoot and was well aware of his limitations, even if he didn't admit it publicly. He was good at what he did, yet wasn't stupid enough to draw on those who would kill him. I doubt Piers has that kind of self awareness.

Two eggs, microwaved in a circular microwave egg thingie, puts Hillshire Farms thin sliced deli ham and cheddar cheese on top of the egg, nukes it just enough to melt the cheese. Slides the egg/ham/cheese onto the muffin and then... ...the secret step... ...wraps the sandwich in a paper towel and lets it steam itself for 30-60 seconds. Unwrap, eat, bliss on a muffin!

I did like the point made that only the right wing protesters would fight back. Other than that the entire story is a fantasy. Seems Jewish writers always fight fighting Jewish protesters and Lesbian heroes. I am shocked.

442 Another news bulletin from Daily Mail: Jane Fonda is crying almost every day that she does not have many days left at 76 and pumped up on Botox or formaldehyde. She wears waterproof mascara as she is crying so much and such a feeb. One would think she was crying because, uh, traitor-pants, but, no. She is just getting old and the sands of time keep going through her hour-glass.

This gave me the urge to blast "Smell of Death" by Lynyrd Skynyrd and wish I could send her a big ole Vermont Teddy Bear with the song and a Rebel yell.

453 420 My fav 90s one hit wonder is 99 Red Balloons by Nena.

Back in the late '80s, early '90s, I was working for a consulting engineering firm. We had a customer in the Munich area, and I was shipped out for meetings. Of course, this totally whacked out my personal clock, so I wound up wide awake late at night. Turn on the TV, and they're doing some sort of music video show.

And Nena's on.

I don't remember much, but I do remember this:

- Her background singers were guys dancing around in giant earthworm costumes.
- The big refrain in the chorus was "in die Erde", or something like that. It sounded vaguely like "in the Navy."
- I have tried many times, but have never managed to track down the song.

It is, of course, possible that I was hallucinating, what with being all hopped up on low-oxygen jetliner air and all...

503 http://tinyurl.com/k9hjlnv Be nice if a major news organization or even a blog covered this. "Harvard Law Professor Cass Sunstein, a close Obama adviser and the White House’s former head of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, wrote a controversial paper in 2008 proposing that the US government employ teams of covert agents and pseudo-”independent” advocates to “cognitively infiltrate” online groups and websites, as well as other activist groups." Turns out the National security apparatus is doing just that.

506 I am sure that one works like a charm with a girl who target practices and makes deer jerky. She'd whop you upside the head, honey. You'd be surprised. Besides, I'd bet she would probably be willing to do all sorts of things to get on my land to hunt.

519 Here's everyone trying to read deep meaning into the "Closing Time" song, and I thought it was just a cynical attempt to write a song that would bring in nickels and dimes from ASCAP from now until kingdom come.
