Common Core: Students in Rialto Unified School District Asked to Write Essay Offering Their Opinion as to Whether the Holocaust Really Happened, or If It Was "Merely a Political Scheme Created to Influence Public Emotion and Amass Wealth"

The Rialto school district planned to revise an eighth-grade assignment that raised red flags by asking students to consider arguments about whether the Holocaust — the systematic killing by the Nazis of some 6 million Jews and millions of others — was not an “actual event” but instead a “propaganda tool that was used for political and monetary gain.”

In a statement released Monday, a spokeswoman for the Rialto Unified School District said an academic team was meeting to revise the assignment.

Interim Superintendent Mohammad Z. Islam was set to talk with administrators to “assure that any references to the holocaust ‘not occurring’ will be stricken on any current or future Argumentative Research assignments,” a statement from district spokeswoman Syeda Jafri read.

The 18-page assignment instructions included three sources that students were instructed to use, including one that stated gassings in concentration camps were a “hoax” and that no evidence has shown Jews died in gas chambers.

“ADL does not have any evidence that the assignment was given as part of a larger, insidious, agenda,” the blog post read. “Rather, the district seems to have given the assignment with an intent, although misguided, to meet Common Core standards relating to critical learning skills.”

In her statement provided to KTLA, Jafri said the district’s “CORE team” would meet to revise the prompt.


I've hinted at this before, but let be explicit:

I do not support the lofty and ambitious goal of having teachers teach children "how to think" because I do not believe that low-ranking civil servants, as a group, are particularly good at it themselves.

Let this be my Exhibits A through Z.

They are failing at teaching the most basic stuff, so our response is to let them Explore the Studio Space?

Abortion, gun-control, "Palestinians" vs Israeli settlements, medical testing on animals, etc. I don't understand why they couldn't have stuck with those tried and true topics of debate. One particular history teacher at the High School was an Annapolis Grad, Navy. He had my son's class read Zinn's book on American history. He did it because that is largely what he believes. Because it's really NOT about educating the kids so much as it is making them conform. The BIG LIE about "Common Core" is not that it teaches "critical thinking skills", but teaches kids how to think like Leftists. Let's discuss whether the Holocaust actually occurred. Mountains of historical evidence, films, documentaries of the horror. The Holocaust Museum in DC. Let's discuss, because that's the moral relativist approach. 226 Gee, when I was in high school we watched actual footage from the Nazi death camps. Yeah, it was real, and it's fortunate that those clips of bulldozing naked, dead bodies was captured in black and white (still almost puked, though). Also recall a visit from the actor who played the French soldier on "Hogan's Heroes" relaying his own family's experience with the Holocaust. He said he wanted to be sure that we knew it really happened, which seemed odd at the time. Now, not so much.

I don't see how we can do this as long as we have public schools. As horrible as many of the teachers are, do we really want high schools graduating students who have never learned how to do a mathematical proof or construct a term paper? Learning how to think is part of getting educated.

Or maybe you have something else in mind with the "how to think" phrase. If you are talking about indoctrination, then never mind, I agree completely. But, critical reasoning skills are essential.

I could even see assigning a student to write some kind of paper on a subject for which there are conspiracy theories out there. The Holocaust as a topic shows bad judgement on the part of whoever selected that example. But, the JFK assignation should be ok. If the assignment includes developing the skills to sift through all the info that is out there and then make a reasoned argument about where the truth lies, that is a skill that is something anyone graduating high school should have. And if some students write a paper saying the CIA killed JFK, I don't imagine anyone is going to get to bothered by it, unlike the potential for problems with something like the Holocaust.

The Holocaust as a topic shows bad judgement on the part of whoever selected that example. But, the JFK assignation should be ok. If the assignment includes developing the skills to sift through all the info that is out there and then make a reasoned argument about where the truth lies, that is a skill that is something anyone graduating high school should have. And if some students write a paper saying the CIA killed JFK, I don't imagine anyone is going to get to bothered by it, unlike the potential for problems with something like the Holocaust.

There was a story in the news last week about a public library system in or around Toronto that dealt with complaints that "Hop on Pop" should be removed because it advocates violence (it's staying).  The story mentioned other books that got banning requests and one of them was O'Reilly's "Killing Kennedy" because it promoted the "Oswald acted alone" theory.

Did a quick Bing search for "Rialto Interim Superintendent".  And yeah, the name is legit.  Even though I recognize the TV channel, I still can't entirely shake the idea that the name means the article is a hoax.

 

In any event, based on a brief skim through of the article I found regarding this guy, it looks like he was brought in by the school district after the previous superintendent embezzled large amounts of money.  And investigators noted that there were absolutely positively no e-mails, memos, or other forms of communication surviving that would indicate what had happened.

 

It sounds like Rialto's got a really great school district.

Bloodlands by Timothy Snyder discusses at length how the Nazi  intentions for the Jews, at least publicly, evolved over the course of the war. Madagascar was a favored destination, although moving over ten million people there would have been likely to kill most of them in transit and by starvation soon after.

'Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust' by Daniel Jonah Goldhagen addresses the third question you gave. 'Ordinary Men' by Christopher R. Browning is another work that is referenced in Goldhagen's book.

The book I'm currently reading, 'Operation Paperclip' by Annie Jacobsen also deal heavily with the issue of who knew what and when, in this case the scientists and others who ran so much of the advanced technology portion of the Nazi war apparatus. One interesting detail I'd never heard before was that Werner Von Braun became a born again Christian during his time in Texas at Ft. Bliss.

413 I'm a public school teacher.  I'm on my planning period period right now.  Stories like this one do not surprise me.  We are having that Common Core crap rammed down our throats as well and, as you know, it's a bogus curriculum but there is more.  My school, and many others, have some type of curriculum attached to the regular instruction.  It is basically an extra class in which the students are taught to integrate environmental considerations into their daily lives as well as the other subjects.  This is referred to as "Environment as Integrating Context".  And there's more but I'm on a computer that is the property of the school district so I'll stop here and offer no opinion.  Enjoy the decline!

With less than 8 weeks to go  before permanently concluding my now 4.5 years teaching in government schools, I would impart that Common Core is a sinister perversion of the word education. I'm out. I am getting my kids out. Getting ready for what's coming.

If you have kids in government schools in a Common Core State (which includes any district in the People's Republic of CA), take pity on your kids and get them out. Homeschool or bust. You can do it if you're willing to sacrifice. Take it from a teacher who can no longer deliver this Stalinist agitprop due to matters of conscience.  - It's not as bad as they say- it is far, far worse.
