— Ace You've heard this claim sixty thousand times: The uninsured don't go to doctors before a condition worsens, so they show up at the emergency room with a condition that could have been treated much more cheaply earlier.
Or: The poor go to the emergency room because they know they can't be turned away. And thus the absolutely highest-dollar part of the hospital is overutilized, thus driving up health care costs. Which you pay for, because, in the end, the hospital isn't eating that loss.
So, Obamacare was supposed to reduce costs by weaning the uninsured off their habituation of using the emergency room as a local health clinic.
Nope. Medicaid patients use the emergency room forty percent more than the completely uninsured.
Is there a single claim about this program that wasn't a "wrong promise"?
A new study of Medicaid beneficiaries in Oregon makes a strong version of this case. The study, published today in the journal Science, finds that adult Medicaid beneficiaries rely on emergency rooms about 40 percent more than similar uninsured adults."When you cover the uninsured, emergency room use goes up by a large magnitude," said Amy Finkelstein, a health economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who served as a lead investigator on the study, in an MIT press statement accompanying the study.
There were no exceptions to the trend. "In no case were we able to find any subpopulations, or type of conditions, for which Medicaid caused a significant decrease in emergency department use," said Finkelstein.
As Peter Suderman notes there, a previous Oregon Medicaid study also demonstrated that people on Medicaid experience no better health outcomes than those without any insurance at all.

But that never works unless you're prepared to deny care for those who cannot pay.
And Obama care won't decrease them one bit. In Fact their will be an increase. Some accidental because they didn't know they weren't covered, some on purpose cause they figure the gov't or an insurer will pay for it at some point.
Most because they can. Why bother with pesky insurance premiums, signing up and filling out forms when you can just present yourself at the ER with your symptoms and BY LAW the hospital must admit you if you fit certain very flexible criteria. they may or may not CURE what you have but they will stabilize you and diagnose you.

A Vietnamese guy, a Cuban Refugee, and a Democrat are all in a boat lost at sea.... a bottle is found and the Vietnamese rubs it a genie grants three wishes.
The Viet says: I want to go home to a free Vietnam and poof he is in Saigon in a capitalist paradise.
The Cuban says: I'd like to go back to a free Cuba and poof the Cuban is in a post-communist Cuba making money off Cigars
The Democrat says: man I am lonely I wish those two guys were back here.

They're doing some Obama-class revisionist history. ("What we promise was, if you like your plan and it hadn't changed since we passed the law, you could keep it.") They're saying that they never argued that ER visits would go down, just that *uncompensated* ER visits would go down. Which, you know, is bullshit. But they believe it, because Obama is Awesome.

I have medicaid and am regulated to a specific clinic BUT if I get sick suddenly and call to see if they can see me, they send me to the emergency room. Seriously. Then, after sitting there for 10-12 hours (illegal aliens!), I can get treatment.
I can't wait until all those who have been pushed on to Medicaid after having regular insurance experience that. The last time I got sick, I went ahead and paid $70 bucks (borrowed) to see a doctor, which took 45 minutes max.
Posted by: joanne at January 02, 2014 04:09 PM (s/quq)
No they changed the laws and if you die while on medicaid, the fed gov't can act to seize all assets to pay it back for the "care" you received. (another gift from the ACA)
And which may or may not have not kept you alive.
Anyone who's not mad at the R's for not even planning to try to repeal this isn't paying attention (or is Gabriel Malor).
Oh and someone tell me that all the while we're sorting this mess out, it behooves us to anoint millions of undocumented Democrats as citizens? Well that's what Boner has in mind.

Actually I thought everyone paid into Medicare (for their eventual senior years). Medicaid is funded differently as I recall. But I confess I might not have this right as I am not in the medical field.

Nice try, but I believe there's a rather extensive set of IRS regs about professionals donating their services. Keeps, for instance, a law-bot from declaring his services are worth $1000 an hour and taking a massive deduction.

Just another reason to invoke Shakespeare's maxim about lawyers.
Back in days of yore, many many docs actually did this (on an informal basis at least), but the iron hand of the IRS and the majesty of the state must not be denied.

I suspect that a lot of those ER "frequent flyers" are being coached--show up with no ID and claim to be homeless. From my application caseload alone you would think half of Philadelphia was penniless and sleeping on the streets, and that's just not true. Another group driving up the costs are illegal aliens who use the ER for every little ache and pain--I swear half of Jakarta is living in South Philly and came here for treatment of chronic medical conditions, and every labor and delivery application I get is for yet another "anchor baby".
It doesn't matter if the specific Medicaid program is state or federally funded, because either way as taxpayers we pick up the tab. And the cases I reject and the hospital eats? Well, just look at your itemized bill the next time you go to the hospital--you don't really think rubber gloves and cotton balls cost $10.00 each, do you? This system is broke and the last thing it needs is Medicare expansion or Obamacare; God help us if those fools in Washington manage to push through "immigration reform"....

4th the goal of the Medicaid/Medicare/HMOinization of medical care has been to force the middle class out of the middle class imho and to punish non union members of it.
I am glad you survived your cancer, a freer market would reduce costs for care IMHO and I would support a genuine annual baseline medical subsidy for the lower class to be able to spend ONLY on healthcare with the current Medicare system being shifted to a catastrophic risk pool.
The whole thing is a fucked up LBJ vote buying game

I will now be paying for birth control, maternity care, pediatric muthafuckin' dental and, while I don't know for sure, probably the ever popular "gender reassignment" surgery (also known as the addadictomy). I'm a 62 year old woman with no children who has not had secks with other people in more years than I care to cop to. Increased costs? I hope everyone I pay for gets a raging case of herpes. In their mouth. At least I'd feel better about the costs.

If you want to know where the Rovian GOP thinks Paradise is you simply look to Richard Nixon.
The left hated Nixon because he nutpunched their caucus' fissure points like a virtuoso and who knows had Alan Moore's Watchemen been the real history of America maybe it'd have worked out......Nixon did a wonderful job of fracturing their caucus by knowing just when to hit and to what limit to shut them the fuck up.
The problem is you'd need a Nixon to be President 'til 1984 at least.
I would no more want King Richard the Dick than I like King Barry the SCOAMF I tend to favor Reagan.

don't be ridiculous . . . we have gay marriage (even on the Rose Parade itself) and little kindergarten children who are confused about their gender may now decide which bathroom they want to use, regardless of what they're packin' down there.

I myself being 4 months old at the time decided to sit it out.

Hope this doesn't turn out to be like Virginia where McAulifful attacked, smeared, and lied about Cuccinelli for months, while the GOP-e yawned.
Bitch is on the big government payroll, so he'll get plenty of funding for negative ads against Blevins. I just hope Blevins will have the resources to respond with something. Cuccinelli just didn't have enough funds to combat the McAulifful lies until way too late in the game (the shutdown probably didn't help due to all the federal leeches in Northern VA either), but I saw personal destruction in full swing here and expect Bitch will be a willing participant in it in KY.

He was better than McGovern.
Posted by: Y-not
EPA, wage and price controls, withdraws from Vietnam, hires thugs for political operations ...
What exactly would McGovern have done differently?
Further, what would McGovern have done that would have been beneficial to the Dem's prospects 10 years after?

I dunno I am not a huge follower of the guy in detail...
I'll look into it, wonder if he was getting mass trolled or something and just handled it poorly?

But that never works unless you're prepared to deny care for those who cannot pay.

Actually, you don't have to be that ruthless. My modest proposal is a government health loan program which like student loans and child support cannot be discharged by bankruptcy. If you need medical treatment that you cannot afford and you have no insurance, you simply sign the form and the government will pay for that treatment.
From then on, until you have repaid the loan, the government will automatically take 20% of your income, either out of your paycheck or directly from your bank account. You don't need to do a thing. It is that convenient. If you die before the loan is entirely repaid, your children are not stuck with the bill. They can have whatever is left of your estate after it has been auctioned off and applied to the loan.
Or, you could buy health insurance.

Been reading more about the Nixon era lately, I had no idea how liberal he was, or how like Barack Obama.
There was a reason Reagan thought long and hard about running against him in 1968.
