Deal In Ukraine Between President and Opposition May End Crisis... For Now
— Ace

It's a punt on the underlying issue, hoping to resolve it later.

Per Fox News' televised report, the Ukrainian president has agreed to early elections, to install, maybe, a new ruling regime.

Other concessions include an amnesty for protesters -- apparently they could have been charged for the crime of being brutalized and shot by state police -- and an end to the president's "anti-terrorism" campaign, which provided the legal pretext to use deadly force against people gathering in public squares to protest him.

Supposedly the president Yanukovych will include the opposition in the current one-party (Russia-backed) government, for whatever that may count for.

Shots rang out and tension remained high in the streets of Kiev Friday, as Ukrainian protest leaders signed a deal with Ukraine's president to defuse a political crisis that has left scores dead and hundreds injured.

The two sides signed an agreement after hours of European-led negotiations...

The Ukrainian parliament approved amnesty for protesters involved in the recent violence following the agreement Friday.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych gave in to pressure from European diplomats, offering concessions-- including elections-- and promising to invite the opposition into the government, in an attempt to end the violence. Yanukovych gave no time frame for new elections.

Of course everyone sees the problem immediately: Tyrants do not give up power, ever. Sure, they can agree to new elections, to solve a short-term headache; but their intent is then to fix the elections in their favor.

I don't know how that will be dealt with. I imagine it won't be. The Russians are pretty good at rigging elections by this point.

3 I'm pretty sure the cat's    out of the bag in Ukraine at this point.    This explosion of tension    didn't just HAPPEN.   It's    clearly been simmering for a long time.   I don't think it's going     to go away now that it's boiled over.

5 I would argue the Russians are lousy at rigging elections, because they're always so obvious and anger the people so much. They need to study how its done in America, with the full support of the press and pressure by members of the opposition party to never mention it.

The fact that the government is willing to have a truce to me seems   a     sign of weakness.      They might just be afraid of bad publicity, but I have a feeling that the current leadership is weak and might end up being replaced.

20 Kicking the can down the road is always an option, and a fairly useful option to preserve the status quo as you work to better your position.  Shooting is always risky because you never really know how that will actually play out - the variables are too many and the situation is too prone to spinning out of control.

No point in invading Belarus -- they're firmly in Russia's orbit. What's more, Latvia and Poland cooperate with NATO, so there's no invading them without repercussions.

32 This is actually a good "tyrant test." If it's really "just" a clash between two sides unwilling to compromise on certain things, the President will run clean elections, and things will get better. If he's really a tyrant, we'll find out when his party gains a bunch of extra seats. Either way, it should at least provide clarity on who the "Good guys" are.

The White House confirmed Thursday that the president’s forthcoming budget blueprint would no longer contain what had been a central component of his long-term debt-reduction strategy. Not anymore. “This reaffirms what has become all too apparent: the president has no interest in doing anything, even modest, to address our looming debt crisis,” House Speaker John Boehner’s spokesman Brendan Buck said in a statement. ???? I think they are working under the "give him enough rope" theory, but that only works if you present a clear, positive alternative to the guy with the rope. I'm not seeing that from the GOP.
See, people agree almost universally that the Democrats suck and Obama is lousy at his job. The problem is that they also almost universally agree that the Republicans are worse.
And while I don't agree, too few are making any effort to show and follow through on being a viable alternative with good ideas.

At this point, any Republican that makes a deal with "If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor" lying liar Obama is an inveterate idiot. All of his promises come with an expiration date plus he is a pathological liar. Any Republican that tries to "work with him" or make deals with him needs to be unelected because he is too stupid to represent his constituents.

We have a summer party on the island at the yacht club, a Christmas party in various high-end venues every year (one door prize this year was a PS4, and that wasn't the most expensive), and we usually have about 3 barbecues and 4 pub nights per year. Yeah, that's exactly it. They are great at the fake, safe, and carefully controlled pretend versions of government that they did in college, wrote about in papers, and talked about in late night jam sessions. But when it comes down to actually doing the job, they're constantly revealed as not just incompetent, but childishly so.
Hillary Clinton is trying reeeeally hard to get people to ignore her run as Secretary of State which accomplished absolutely zero good but had several cringe-worthy disasters and embarrassments while on her watch. She's as lousy at the job as President Obama. During the 2008 elections, I was pulling more for her than Obama because I figured she had guts and understood foreign policy better.

The point isn't to kill them all. The point is to kill enough to terrorize the survivors into submission and obedience. Of course, ideas differ on how many victims constitute 'enough'.  Pol Pot liquidated a third of his country's population in the span of a few short years. I remember reading that, toward the end, Khmer Rouge executioners working in the killing fields were using bayonets and machetes because they were running out of bullets.

Well, that's how I think they should handle it all. Give the Democrats what they want, let them have it all but make it clear you protest, make it clear you have an alternative, and always, always push the problems with what the Dems are doing at every forum.
Bring a copy of your alternative wherever you go, and be well informed on it so you can refer to it and bring it up, answer questions, and sound prepared.

172 Russia, especially Putin and his gang, have never given up on the dream of a vast empire. They're totally convinced that Russians are better than everyone else and ought to rule. Communism as a system was a means to an end for these guys, not anything they were wedded to.

Or they're like nearly every modern young couple I know that simply don't want kids because they get in the way and are a harsh on their mellow.

Chelsea is a hybrid and probably can't conceive.

Jackal/horn-dog hybrid to be precise.

177 The commies have done so many shitty things. One commie from I think Hungary or Czechoslovakia was in Moscow with his wife and children when the KGB snatched his infant son who was never seen again. That was to keep the guy in line.

180 I’m now going to start calling these people “global warming Nazis”.

The pseudo-scientific ramblings by their leaders have falsely warned of mass starvation, ecological collapse, agricultural collapse, overpopulationÂ…all so that the masses would support their radical policies. Policies that would not voluntarily be supported by a majority of freedom-loving people.

They are just as guilty as the person who cries “fire!” in a crowded theater when no fire exists. Except they threaten the lives of millions of people in the process.

Like the Nazis, they advocate the supreme authority of the state (fascism), which in turn supports their scientific research to support their cause (in the 1930s, it was superiority of the white race).

Dissenting scientific views are now jack-booted through tactics like pressuring scientific journals to not publish papers with which they disagreeÂ…even getting journal editors to resign.

Like the Nazis, they are anti-capitalist. They are willing to sacrifice millions of lives of poor people at the altar of radical environmentalism, advocating expensive energy policies that increase poverty. And if there is a historically demonstrable threat to humanity, it is poverty.

181 Ever wonder why these revolts dont happen in countries without natural resources (energy)? Georgia, Iraq, Afghainistan, Libya, Egypt, Turkey, Ukraine, Venezuela, Congo. The global oligarch want MOAR POWER and oil is power. This isn't communism vs. democracy or Christianity vs Islam. That's how the media frames it for the weak minded. The banking elite and the MIC make the calls and the political puppets and their media convince y'all who's side to choose.

182 The Nazi connections go further. Nazis were convinced they were utterly scientific, using the latest principles of science for every aspect of their plan from economy to family to education, and beyond. They were certain their efforts would save humanity and produce a better world, and that anyone who disagreed was a sub-creature, someone who ought be ignored, if not destroyed.
And they were widely supported by the bulk of academia when they started up.

186 From the WSJ:

Ukraine's Parliament voted for a law that would allow the release of jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, an opposition figurehead and major political rival of President Viktor Yanukovych.

The vote came hours after opposition leaders signed a compromise deal with Mr. Yanukovych aimed at ending three months of antigovernment protests by reducing his powers, calling early elections and forming a coalition government.

Ms. Tymoshenko, who narrowly lost a 2010 presidential runoff against Mr. Yanukovych, was jailed in 2011 for abuse of office in a trial widely criticized as rigged.

190 Our own government might want to pay attention to Kiev. IÂ’ve been to Europe and have known many types of Slavic peoples. Generally the European attitude is take whatever the government will give them. In the modern era they arenÂ’t fighters. It was amazing the Poles actually accomplished the freedom movement when they did in the 1980s. But this is an example of when they have had enough. Corruption has been rampant since the wall fell decades ago over there. There has been no hope for the future, rigged elections and off and on lawlessness. The politicians there now worry for their lives. Because the masses are coming for them. What makes anyone think this sort of unrest wonÂ’t happen here? Because when the economy finally collapses as the basic laws of economics and third grade math state it must that is when we will begin our spiral for Kiev to watch on television. What do you think we are going to act like when the plug is pulled and carpet yanked? Look what one hurricane did in Katrina. And who do you think is going to be blamed? IÂ’ve predicted what a fall and collapse will resemble in my fiction. An Apocalypse if you will. You want to know where I got my research? 1917 Russia. Ancient Rome. Cuba. And places like Kiev. People act pretty much the same under the same circumstances. Might want to think about it Barry. You too GOP. There is a little thing called the Second Amendment. IÂ’m online all the time as IÂ’m a writer now by trade. And people are starting to use a phrase that hasnÂ’t been uttered for about 150 years. Would you like to know what those words are? Civil War. Just something to think about Washington. And you better start thinking or my fiction may indeed become a reality. Just ask the Ukraine. Charles Hurst. Author of THE SECOND FALL. An offbeat story of Armageddon. And creator of THE RUNNINGWOLF EZINE blog.
