Democratic Candidate for Congress: "[I] Voted to Let You Keep Your Existing Health Plan"
— Ace

Apparently they won't be exactly running on Obamacare after all.

Now, it is true that Garcia doesn’t call for repeal. Indeed, the ad boasts that the candidate is “working to fix” the law, and it praises him both for holding “insurance companies accountable” and for defending the provision that prevents insurance companies from denying coverage to those with pre-existing conditions. But it is fascinating to watch a Political Action Committee associated with Nancy “we’re going to run on Obamacare” Pelosi slamming the White House for “the disastrous healthcare website” and boasting — without any time qualification, it should be said — that its man “voted to let you keep your existing health plan.”

This isn't possible - I was informed by an electoral genius commenter on this blog that Democrats would be stuck defending Obamacare and would go down in flames as a result.  Further, that would result in Democrats being left to wander the political wilderness for a generation since their arguments have been so roundly discredited...

Who could have foreseen a Democrat running on what Obamacare should have been instead of what it turned out to be.....?

I voted against the farm bill essentially because it contains $8 billion in cuts to the food stamp program. Â… ThatÂ’s just immoral, frankly. I donÂ’t see how we can do that. Not in this recession, where people canÂ’t find jobs, weÂ’re not extending unemployment insurance, and now we want to starve people? ThatÂ’s wrong. Â… Any program, humans beings will find a way to have some fraud. We have plenty of protections to minimize the fraud. If Republicans wanted to say, letÂ’s put in this extra protection, that extra protection, that would be something else. TheyÂ’re just using that as an excuse. They just want people to starve, and itÂ’s disgusting.

Heh, you aren't the political genius commenter I was thinking of.

That said, you'll notice his is a platform of fixing, not nixing.  When the criticisms start centering around how government is simply unable to manage a healthcare system, I'll start thinking your argument makes sense.  But for now, that's not where the criticism is.  The criticisms are coming from failures to implement, not philosophical opposition to Obamacare itself.

And that's why talk of the Left running away from anything to do with government involvement in healthcare is fanciful thinking.

I got called up for a county jury a few years ago and reading was a requirement.  During voir dire they asked if there was anyone who could not read.  One elderly black guy stood up and said he could not.  The judge really badgered him trying to get him to say he could at least read a little bit.  He stuck to his guns though and the judge let him go after making several sarcastic remarks.

No. Our jury system is rigged. Most never serve. Those that do are called over and over again.

Posted by: Boss Moss at February 12, 2014 03:11 PM (6bMeY)

You can only be called once per year in our county.  I do it because, well (and don't laugh, fkr) it's my civic duty.  I really do see it that way.

Is it boring?  sometimes.  But I catch up on some reading.

Ian S.

Every objective measure showed the democrats were getting a much huger share of the blame than the GOP.  In 1995, GOP was blamed by more than 20 points and in the next election we picked up 2 Senate seats and lost a House seat.

Here, they were throwing barriers up in dying WWII vets faces, to a concrete OUTDOOR memorial, their memorial!!  Reid was caught saying he didn't give a shit about kids with cancer.   GOP had passed separate bills to fund EVERYTHING except obamacare.   College kids in frigging Boulder were blaming dems by a wide margin.

Eventually, if we had stuck with it, the Prez would have caved on something.  His position was entirely unreasonable.  No past Prez had ever acted like that.  It was the perfect set up.

But no.  The day we start to fight, stupid fucks like McCain are calling Cruz and others whacko birds and out come the knives, FROM OUR OWN SIDE.

Brilliant moves guys.  Brilliant.

Boehner is another problem.  But regarding a Cruz win or lose, you have to start somewhere if you have any principles to demonstrate that you do indeed have principles.

Good line today from a Chris Plante caller (paraphrased):

Either you have principles that can win elections, in which case you need to demonstrate them; or your principles can't ever win elections and we are all screwed.

280 A Photo ID is required to enter the courthouse. You are not allowed to bring cell phones, liquids, gels, laptops, electronic devices, iPads, e-books, recording devices, cameras, lighters, matches, or any objects that may activate the metal detectors into the courthouse. All visitors are prohibited from bringing liquids into the courthouse. Reading material is NOT allowed in the courtroom. Vic I think you could still bring a folio book to read in the Jury Assembly room but not in the actual courtroom. Or you could tell the marshals that these rules make you more sympathetic to the criminal defendants since it is a taste of prison life.

289 You said they ran equally crap campaigns to Perry and Fred. And I said they weren't remotely equally crappy. McCain and Romney won the Republican nomination, Perry and Fred came in pretty much dead last in the nomination processes. By definition these are not equal.

Only if you completely lack nuance.  I think everyone here realizes that primary campaigns aren't general campaigns.  Perry in particular ran a pretty much textbook-perfect campaign, it was the candidate himself who killed the whole thing.  Thompson I'm not sure *had* a campaign, which was kind of the problem.

And in both cases, the winner of the primary went on to run a notably bad campaign.  McCain's we all knew it was a clusterfuck as it was happening, Romney's I think most of us were IVing the Kool-Aid until election night.

I just get tired of the establishment boogieman being used as an excuse anytime a favored candidate loses.

I'm not making that excuse, I'm just saying that being establishment doesn't automatically confer the ability to run a great campaign and win elections.
