Yeah, if they're talking annually.  I get $18.5K gross (9.25 * 40 * 50) per annum and a net of $1,233/month take home. 

 

If that's your budget, a $300 car payment is an interesting priority.  And a heck of a nice used car.

This.  People earning minimum wage are often teenagers, part-timers looking for a second stream of income for their family, or people who have made lots of bad life decisions prior to this point.

Watch how much farther a minimum wage money goes when gas is $1.00/gallon and food prices have dropped accordingly. $7.65/hr times 2000 hours/yr times 2% is roughly $300; about one month's note on a used car at one of those tote-ur-note lots.

I suppose, in all fairness, I should also take into consideration that, at $15k per year, if even one child is involved, then they don't have to spend that 15k a year on housing or food. If you have free or reduced-rate housing, and food stamps, and Medicaid, and the rest of your earnings are yours to do with as you see fit, then perhaps a car payment/insurance/maintenance/gas isn't out of the question.

Well, I've noticed a lot of imagery (way more than ever before) coming out of Hollywood lately of people being blinded, and having very bad things done to their eyes. It's even making a star appearance on a significant number of posters.

Now... if you understand anything at all about l*bs, it's that they like to egg and prod and gloat and point and laugh, especially behind people's backs. Given this fact, I think they're specifically greenlighting and putting out stories laden with this imagery because they are laughing at what they're currently getting over on everybody.

92 Kind of busy with work so not following all of this. But, my wifes car payment is $275 month. It is a Malibu that was about 18 months old when she bought it. So almost a new car. Used cars have gone up significantly since the cash for clunkers took place. And to be honest with you, we make ok money but I don't ever see us buying a new car/truck. Hell most cars cost more than the 1st, 2nd and 3rd houses we bought.

The way the "bad credit"  car dealers work is, they find out how much money you make (you give them copies of your paycheck stubs), they tell you how much  you can afford to pay (having a down payment helps,  but it's not necessary). 

 

So let's say they decide you can afford  $300 a month.  They will make you sign over direct withdrawal from your checking accoung, twice a month at $150. 

 

Then  they will show you the cars on their lot you can buy.  These are not nice cars.   Not  even close.  You don't  worry about your interest rate, you don't worry about paying your other bills, you get to keep the car as long as those $150 withdrawals from your account  continue to not bounce. 

 

If they do, they take the car back.  And sell it to the next schmuck who shows up on their lot.

Anyone who's ever worked a day in their life knows that if you are still making minimum wage at your job after a year, you are doing something terribly wrong. Now, I do understand that a 3% raise on $7.25 per hour still does not put you into the money, but after a year in a minimum wage job such as fast food, you've outlasted most of the others and SHOULD be in a position to pursue a promotion, and THAT will definitely pay more than minimum wage. It would probably pay closer to the $10.10 that they are now pushing. Which is what really pisses me off. All of those who have worked their asses off to earn more than minimum wage will have all their hard-earned gains wiped out in one fell swoop.

My wife's car has a backup camera.  It's a fish-eye lens to get the best wide view possible from that tiny ass camera, but it makes it so you can't judge distances very well.  And frankly, when backing up people tend to focus on the screen instead of looking all around like  they're supposed to.

I think it's more the reality that you have quite a few illegal aliens crowding the low/no skill job markets.  They work all day for peanuts, and they'll probably stick around...unlike a teenager where you'll get a couple of summers out of them before they move on.

 

Honestly, I am adamant all of my kids get jobs, but the way the job market is, it's going to be very tough for them to find jobs at McDonald's or whatever.   

 

I take your point about college admissions officers looking more favorably on bullshit extracurriculars.  I guess in my case by the time I was applying for college I was already managing a night shift at McDonald's, and since I was going for a business degree that helped more than running track or something.

Though I will say one of my local grocery stores does use mainly teenagers as cashiers and right now everyone is all excited because it's prom season and I've seen pictures of the dresses for four different girls, all of whom were glowing with pride because they bought those dresses with their own money that they made working at that job.

Sherry, I damn sure to not want to get into an argument about this, but driver's aids in general do not make anyone a 'better driver'. They merely make it easier, and with that ease comes complacency. It has already been noted that the advent of air bags has had the psychological consequence of increasing risk-taking. That does not make air bags a bad thing, but it is an indicator of the psychology of drivers.

 

We might argue the pros and cons of the impact of technology on automobiles, but I do not believe that any of it makes anyone a 'better driver', quite the opposite.

I think busses are the best mass-transport solution right now because train tracks are impossible to lay anymore due to Enviro lawsuits. IIRC a bus is only more efficient if it's mostly packed, like 85%+. Usually only commuter busses and certain other lines are running that full. Most busses are running fairly empty. I know if I ever take the bus in Seattle in the non-commuter hours it's usually four or five people only.

Look on Craigslist, or simply cruise the residential streets and look for dusty cars with a "for sale" sign in the window. Then be prepared to dicker on the deal. We don't but it tells me that people are begging to go into hock to buy a slightly newer, slightly better -looking car, and yes $300 a month is very possible.  When you are poor, the appearance of the car you drive becomes more important to you than it does to a wealthy person. Yes, they are willing to pay through the nose....

Not all plans are unlimited talk and text.  Mine isn't and its $50/mo. plus fees.  It is with Verizon.  I could have got cheaper plan with someone else but that seems to be the only company that has good coverage down in GA when I visit my family.

Megan McArdle had an article years ago pointing out that same issue with light rail.  You had to run the trains even if they were empty, which used about the same amount of fuel.

A guy I work with got one of those POS, a few months later there was something wrong with the gas tank (a check valve not working right?) that caused to to backfeed whenever you filled it. He pretty much had to dribble gas into the car to avoid it. When he took it to the dealership, after checking and seeing so many people complaining about the problem, they said that nobody had complained about that problem. He went home and printed off the 50+ pagesof complaints, and it still took forever for them to fix it correctly. Eventually they had a recall.

Sad, Sherry. I know of such a case, also. You can buy a stand-alone rear vision camera system now for about a hundred bucks. If a camera were integrated into a modern car (e.g. none of mine) that already has the "info center" screen on the dash, it needn't cost more than about $40. And it would make parallel parking easier, too.

470 You are wrong on your calculation. 7.25/hr * 52 * 40 = 15k. 2% of 15k is 300 *a YEAR*. So it's not $300/month, but $25/month.

HOWEVER, the graphic is still misleading. How is $25/month "most" of a used car payment? If we're talking a 5 year loan, that's $1500. You got someone to finance that?

471 Hmm, I went to Kelly Blue Book and looked at what $5,000 could buy and what the payments would be. There were a total of 6 sedans in my area(which is laden with car dealers). The prize out of those 6 choices was a 2000 Ford ZX2 Escort with 35,000 miles. A five year payment plan at 1.99%(loan quote from Kelly) had a payment of $94.63, with a total cost for the vehicle of $5,636.
