— Ace AllahPundit writes of Rand Paul's statement that, as regards immigration policy, we have to "get beyond deportation," which is kind of controversial but not completely.
I don't really care about that.
Here's what I care about, which is probably something you've been thinking about.
1. We cannot win elections on the presidential level for many more years without significantly attracting more Hispanic voters. Demographics is destiny, and the Hispanic population is growing. Meanwhile, the white population is declining (relatively).
Mitt Romney attracted 59% of the white vote, but he lost the election due to losing so many minority votes.
2. Hispanics lean strongly progressive in all areas. We keep hearing about them being more "socially conservative," supposedly, but a, that's not really true (they support, for example, abortion and gay marriage more than the baseline average of the country), and b, for someone who cares less about social issues than the increasing socialization of the nation, the fact that Hispanics are socially conservative (allegedly, but falsely) is a pretty minor comfort.
Allah rebuts the claim that Hispanics are really just conservative voters who don't know it yet with this depressing graphic:

So as you can see, by the third generation of American citizenship, Hispanics have moved from being outright socialist (it's not surprising that immigrants from socialist countries favor socialism) to being merely strongly, strongly Democratic/progressive.
Those of us who oppose socialism will just have to take our Big Victory in the finding that while first generation Hispanic immigrants support socialism by 82-12, by the third generation of American citizenship, we can reduce that lopsided margin all the way down to 58-36.
By the third generation, then, out of every 1,000,000 Hispanic voters, we'll merely be losing net 220,000 votes.
Of course, that's just the third generation. When all Hispanic voters (of all generations) are asked the question, they support a bigger government by 75-25. So out of every 1,000,000 new Hispanic voters, we'll be losing a net half million votes to the socialists.
I will be honest about this: I don't see what the hell there is to do about it. Voters will have their way, and the voters of the future will be voting socialist.
I guess all we can do is play for the near term and Hope a Miracle happens at some point -- that socialism will be more thoroughly discredited, that capitalism and freedom get some positive press, such that long-established political preferences can be changed.
But Hoping for a Miracle doesn't sound like political strategy. It sounds like folly. It sounds like desperation.

“We want compensation for the plagues that were inflicted upon [us] as a result of the curses that the Jews’ ancient forefathers [cast] upon our ancient forefathers, who did not deserve to pay for the mistake that Egypt’s ruler at the time, Pharaoh, committed,” the cranky journalist wrote, according to a translation provided by the Middle East Media Research Institute.
.... of course, any compensation would have to be offset by compensation in the form of reparations for holding the Jews as slaves.

Contrary to the RNC leadership we will NEVER get the Hispanic vote and amnesty is a short path to the death of the Republican Party for two major reasons. One it will add a huge number of permanent Democrat voters and it will drive away conservatives permanently.
And be careful about Rand Paul. Last year he was spouting that he favored the "pathway to citizenship" by the gang of 8, just not all of their things. Pathway to citizenship is pol speak for amnesty.

Immigration policy should be based on what America needs and wants, not what neighboring countries need. We need reform to control entries and stays, and to ensure that, just as before the first "reform" effort led by Teddy Kennedy in the '60s, those who come here can either support themselves or have a sponsor for the first five years so they get ZERO public assistance.
We need skilled people. We need a guest worker program for unskilled workers that will cover most of the Hispanics without offering citizenship.
If you feel all is lost, shoot yourself. We have enough Debbie Downers already.

We did a pretty good job after the last census.. we gotta do even more after the next before it's too late.
The one thing we have going for us is that they tend to group in the same geographical areas.
For instance.. take California (please!).. California is a single huge state. It is hopelessly socialist.. But so what? It's one effin' state. There's still only 2 senators. And there's a finite number of electoral votes.
What really pisses off libs when you talk to them about this shit is that every man woman and child in California and New York can vote for their socialist candidate, but they still only get the same number of electoral votes. They freakin HATE the electoral system. They want a true popular vote. If they ever get that, we're screwed. Until then, however, the big cities and big socialist states have less power than they should given the populations of FSA. So, as much as we can keep them all in big cities, we'll be able to last longer.. but it is inevitable that conservative voters are a dying breed.

According to trends from 100 years ago the bulk of the US population will come from eastern and southern Europe.
That's the funny thing about trends - they continue until they stop, and predicting the future based on a trendline is an exercise in speculation bordering on folly.

Deportatations will not happen.
Fracturing off for a "Greater Texas Republic" and the like are wet dreams on the order of the radical Left's assassination fantasies during any Republican Administration. Meaning, I get the appeal and everybody likes to think about it, but its just a pose. Unless you go about doing it, at which point Good Luck to ya, Bro.
GOP is NOT the brand which can take on the demographic doomsday, which no we cannot stop. Additionally, at the "big donors that we listen to" level every one of them support laws that will screw the GOP over for... well, forever.
So just move on. Not trolling, its what I actually believe. Figure out another Party to coalesce around that has a fkn chance at the future at the Presidential level. Keep GOP for lesser offices if you want.

I don't think that the GOP should try to address groups of people. Left-wing politics divide people up by race, class, gender. So it is only natural that they will appeal to people in this divided way.
However conservative principles address individuals--regardless of race, class or gender. The GOP should stay true to this core identity.
I think there is a common fallacy of trying to copy a Democrat Party strategy, thinking it will work for the GOP. Left/Right politics is not a zero-sum game.
And I mean this at a high level. A small, targeted tactical decision of trying to air ads on Univision or things like that, sure.

Well, the odds are heavily against it. Socialism dominates the globe. That and tyranny of various flavors. There is absolutely zero guarantee that legacy America can be reconstituted. Given that context and their mostly socialist, third-world orientation, Democrats will keep most Hispanics enslaved for generations. Very few have or will break the chains of dependency forged on lies, mischaracterizations and underwritten by the slave master media.
Republicans also give a wink and nod to this enslavement. At least this generation of Boehner's, McConnells idiot buffoons like Reince Priebus and and establishment brokered and funded by ignorant corporatists.
Bottom line: what America once was, it will probably never be again. It has mostly become a zero sum game of stealing from the shrinking productive sector to feed a growing dependency. It will continue to be underwritten by politically correct, tempered liberal language that brands any wise proposal as racist, correctly dire predictions as falsehoods and anyone that dare to utter the truth as an apostate.

Why do we have to settle for 59% of the white vote?
One of the points of the graph has to move, either the share of white votes or share of non-white votes.
There is little practical reason for white Americans to vote Democrat.
The problem is, Democrats can and do make overt appeals to voting-by-race. Republicans cannot and do not.

Today, the 100 largest counties by Hispanic population contain 71% of all Hispanics. Los Angeles County, CA alone contains 4.9 million Hispanics, or 9% of the nationÂ’s Hispanic population. But the share of all Hispanics who live in these same counties has fallen from 75% in 2000 and 78% in 1990, reflecting Hispanic population growth outside of these 100 counties.
Half (52%) of those counties are in three states—California, Texas and Florida. Along with Arizona, New Mexico, New York, New Jersey and Illinois, these eight states contain three-quarters (74%) of the nation’s Latino population. But with the dispersal of the U.S. Latino population across the country, this share too is down from 79% in 2000 and 84% in 1990.

I will say though the longer Hispanics are part of American culture and the greater their numbers, the less they are going to see themselves as aggrieved minority. That, and having more Republicans with names like Martinez, Rubio, Cruz etc will probably help as well.
I can see the day where we look at Hispanics in the US like we now look at Italians. Nobody really talks about the "Italian" vote.

Uncouple race from the equation and then you're dealing solely with ideas, and we have the better ideas: the primacy of individual freedom and smaller government, the dream of a truly merit-based society where who you are is determined by what you do. Longterm, the Republican Party, in its platform and in every public utterance of its leaders at every opportunity, should stress the need and desireability of a colorblind society, where ethnicity and skin color are, for purposes of government, irrelevant. To spread that message requires only that we draw upon Martin Luther King and other civil rights leaders, who placed enormous emphasis on content of character. That's the high road.
Short-term, ensure Republican people of color--Black, Hispanic, Asian--are well-represented in every local, state and national level office as is practicable. You don't like that idea? Okay, then tell me how else the GOP can dispel the notion that the Republican Party in general and conservativism in particular are solely white enclaves. We need a thousand Mia Loves, stat.
We don't need a miracle. We just need smart, savvy leadership with vision.
Okay, so maybe we need a miracle.

So, we have a demographic that, collectively, works hard but that has a seemingly high incidence of taxing government resources. Clearly there's a strong work ethic and a "conservative" drive, but it's conjoined with incentive to acquire public assistance.
Seems to me that the GOP could tap into the more conservative traits rather than try to outpander the Democrats (which is a war that cannot be won).

An existential moment is at hand where the Republican Party must decide once and for all whether it sides with Wall Street over Main Street. (As torque goes to sit and mutter in a dark back corner over cheap whiskey.)
See also why it was an incredibly boneheaded thing for the GOP to nominate a career Wall Street operator, even a clean and honest one, to head the national ticket in 2012.
The very last Republican presidential nominee to actually consistently voice an economically populist theme that the working class could get behind was Ronald flipping Reagan. Who consistently held up those workers as heroes and praised their central role.
Since then we've had Romneys and Bushes and McCains who are insulated by their family fortunes from the hard realities of economic life for the working class.
Anyone else remember Bush senior seeing a supermarket checkout counter laser scanner for the first time, and marveling aloud at this amazing new technology? When everyone else in America who actually works for a living and does their own shopping had long since come across the "amazing new technology" in question. Facepalm.

The result will be similar to what exists in the UK. 2 big government parties who will argue over who runs the bureaucratic state better. Our last shot will be the aftermath of the fiscal collapse of the federal government. Common sense MIGHT take hold at that time. Until then we are all wasting our time with partisan politics. There was a great analysis of the exit vote in 2012 by Sean Trende, and it basically found that if Romney had won something like 80% of the Hispanic vote, he still would have lost.
Most of the Hispanic vote is located in states that aren't really in play like california and texas, not true swing states.
I'm not saying it's something we can ignore, but if Republicans had won like 2% more of white women, it would basically be the equivalent of handily winning the hispanic vote.

The percentage of the black population who have cushy government jobs is far larger than the percentage of the Hispanic population who have cushy government jobs. Despite the Hispanic population being more than three times as large as the black population.
And the friction is getting open and ugly in places.
In L.A., local Hispanic activists pointed out how vividly black the local post office employee rolls are, and said pretty bluntly, "Hola amigos! Some of you are going to have to get fired to make room for more of us!"
This went over with the AfAm postal workers about as well as you would expect.

See, I'm not sure if it's a race thing as much as it is a class thing. I don't think white liberals are breeding anymore. Every birthrate falls off a few generations after coming to the U.S., even hispanics. I also wonder how many people view themselves as hispanic or asian just because one of their parents or grandparents is, let's call it the Liz Warren Effect. I have many white friends who have asian or hispanic spouses with kids. Now are their kids white or not? I think the future of the U.S. racial make up will be hugely mixed.

Asian Americans will be voting conservative as the effects of racial preferences become more clear.
Go to them. And go appeal directly to Hispanics. Just by asking you might win 5% of the vote you would not previously. Beyond that, just taking the air out of the Racism Blimp will convince more to at least not go out of their way to vote AGAINST us.
Regardless, this issue is unfortunately more important than just about any other issue discussed here. On the current course, we either wonÂ’t be elected, or will have to jettison the values that make it matter whether weÂ’re elected.

Bush lost the independent vote in 2004 narrowly, but made up for it with a big Republican turnout.
Romney WON independent voters by double digits. The missing key was Republican turnout. Had we had the Republican 2004 turnout, it would have been a Romney landslide and Obama and Michelle would be getting a divorce right now.
The Democrats had a much better machine in 2012. Say what you will about Rove, but he was able to get our voters to the polls.
The demographics change between now and 2004 does not account for who's in the White House, you're talking fractions of a percent in the swing states.

No doubt that hurt, but our numbers were down with registered Republicans, not moderate Democrats that often Republican at the Presidential level.
One big punch in the face we had to take was the auto bailouts. Romney obviously had to run against those bailouts, but it was a big deal in the swing states because it has heavy automotive-type manufacturing. It wasn't just GM and Chrysler employees, there's countless suppliers that would have also been potentially out of a job.

Consider that for political purposes, when we talk about the "Hispanic" vote, what we're really talking about is the Mexican vote. Because the "Hispanic" population of the USA is predominantly from Mexico.
A Mexican doesn't give a shit about a guy from Cuba. Here to tell you. From an area with a metric shit-ton of Mexicans. The linguistic commonality is the extent of the recognition.
And even Mexicans don't like one another very much. The rivalries between people from different geographies within Mexico are intense and often lethal, and carry over among Mexicans in the USA. A street fight between Sonora and Jalisco is something to see.

(they support, for example, abortion and gay marriage more than the baseline average of the country)
Well, from the survey report itself:
Virtually identical shares of Latinos (59%) and the general public (58%) say homosexuality should be accepted by society. However, on abortion, Hispanics hold a more conservative view than the general U.S. public—half (51%) of Hispanics say it should be illegal in most or all cases, compared with 41% of the general public.
So, not really 'progressive' in that regard at all. Not the half's view on abortion is that it should be illegal. And it is higher in the foreign born or 1st gen. And the question is not abojt gay marriage, but a choice about homosexuality being either 'accepted or discouraged in society'. Very one-ended question. There's a big gap between homosexuality 'being accepted or discouraged' vs gay marriage. The two are not at all the same thing.
"Nearly seven-in-ten (69%) immigrant Hispanics say religion is very important in their lives,"
This is about as far removed from 'progressive' as you can get. Personally, I think the GOP should make some subtle moves to highlight the anti-religious bigotry in 'progressives'. Not from D politicians, who watch their words, but the people who support them. Most Hispanics are probably not aware of the venom that comes out of them on a regular basis.
"Three-in-ten (30%) Latinos describe their political views as liberal or very liberal, compared with 21% of the general public."
Not exactly a groundswell. 32% say conservative.
"Can Most People Get Ahead with Hard Work or Are Hard Work and Determination No Guarantee of Success?"
75% say yes to the former. Again, this is the opposite of what 'progressives' preach.
So, the entire claim of hispanics being progressive or liberal is all about this one broad bigger government and more services question. But what government (federal/local?) and what services did the respondents have in mind. Perhaps they were thinking only of schools in regard to 'services'. No, I don't want fewer schools. We can't tell what they were thinking because the question is so broad.
Also, the sample was 2/3 foreign born. Only 15% were 3rd gen (both parents and adult born in US)
Might want to rethink things a bit instead of assuming something that isn't really true based only on that one loosely worded question and nothing else, most of which contradicts the 'Hispancis are progressives/liberals' line.

I really don't think the average hispanic that lives here cares that deeply, it would be like whites caring if a politician had Irish or Scandanavian roots.
One issue that I do unfortunatley believe resonates is that some Republicans don't like "brown people" here. That why somebody like a Cruz or Rubio as a Republican would be a powerful force. I absolutely think a Cuban Republican would attract a Hispanic voter from Mexico by refuting that Democrat meme.

And they hated fucking socialism like the black plague. Why do your current "Hispanics" get a pass on this, where it's OK for them to be red because they're from Redland?
If our immigration procedures can't prevent open socialists from getting citizenship, it's time to eliminate it and institute new safeguards. Either that, or you believe in some form of "amnesty." And we stay so busy sucking up to the presumed New Masters of Demographics around here, may be you really do, deep down.

Not true. If Romney had attracted 4% more of the white vote, he would have won. If he had increased his share of the Hispanic vote to 70%, he still would have lost.
And what would be more doable for Republicans, going fro 59 up to 63% of the white vote, or going from 27% up to 70% of the Hispanic vote?
Letting in tens of millions more socialism-loving voters is not inevitable; it is a choice we can choose not to make.
In any event, being pro-amnesty will not get the Republicans any more Hispanic votes, because Hispanics will tend to vote for the party of big government regardless. It will likely lose the Republicans lots of white votes, however.
Republicans need to be the party of people who value liberty and economic freedom, be they white, black, Hispanic or whatever. Maybe if they would start fighting for the interests of the people who vote for them, more would.

My husband used to say that Obama was a blessing upon America, because he would bring this country to such a horrible place that almost everyone would see what folly progressivism is. He thought this would happen in the nick of time, and that America can be saved for future generations. But not without a LOT OF PAIN.
Meanwhile, pray to God that He gives us what we need and not what we want.

supermarket checkout counter laser scanner for the first time, and
marveling aloud at this amazing new technology? When everyone else in
America who actually works for a living and does their own shopping had
long since come across the "amazing new technology" in question.

That lie was debunked on, of all things, House of Cards season 2. I couldn't believe the writers actually had the guts to bring it up and cast W in a not horrible light for once. And if you've lost lefty TV show writers...

That's a problem, but the GOP has never really tried to win them over. I'm an Engineer and I work with lot's of Asians and they are in general more naturally conservative then most whites, and especially most Hispanics.
As long as the GOP keeps chasing after Hispanics who will never appreciate what the GOP does for them and will immediately take a collective dump on Republicans the first chance they get, they have no chance of making headway with Asians.
It's just so bizarre how blind the so-called GOP leaders are.

That remark in the context of the whole post is somewhat disingenuous. Romney could have won 100% of the Hispanic vote AND HE STILL WOULD HAVE LOST!
Even out to 2040 which ain't that far away if you don't capture a plurality of the white vote it does not matter how many minority votes you garner. The GOPers need to get that thru their heads. Period.

Unsustainable levels for assimilation, and an anti-assimilationist government.
Instead of teaching immigrants about what has made America great, we bombard them with an indictment of everything America has done wrong. And why would they want to be part of the majority culture, when there are so many benefits associated with not being considered part of the majority culture?

There was an analysis right after the election that DIS-proved the theory that if Mitt had won more minority votes, he'd have won. It showed something like even if Mitt had won 75% of Hispanic votes (which would NEVER happen since Hispanics poll as socialists) he *still* would have lost. However, if Mitt had pandered just a little more to whites and won only a smidgen more of them over (something like a mere 2% more), he'd have won the whole thing. I believe that analysis was posted here at AoS, I'll see if I can find the link.

ALSO, the reason Obama won, was more blacks and hispanics than ever before turned out -- obviously they were motivated by a black man on the ballot. That won't happen again more than likely.

The republic must be broken up. Disintegration is the only solution. Secession the only recourse. In time, the independence movements will begin and whites will begin to fight back as their impending extinction becomes obvious. While whites embrace diversity, the others are using it as cover for demographic genocide. With the first signs of a rising Klan and what I have noticed as an emboldened defiance emanating from many whites, the back lash is coming. Diversity has failed. The republic has failed.
The republic must die.

One thing I find interesting, though. Ace says he 'cares less about social issues than the increasing socialization of the nation'.
The two go hand in hand. If you want less spending and a smaller govt footprint, you must have prudent, thrifty, disciplined people. Bad behavior is expensive.
