Don Lemon: Journalists Have to Weigh How Much They Can Criticize President Obama Because He's Black

True. Obviously true. We've seen a level of protectiveness towards Obama that exceeds all previous media flacking for Democratic presidents -- even ones they loved, like Bill Clinton.

Why are supposed truth-tellers so reluctant to tell the truth? Why is Don Lemon's admission of the glaringly obvious only news now, five years into Obama's term?

Video at the link. Here's the key quote:

LEMON: Everyone is being looking to hit him and everyone is looking to punch him, and I understand that, and as a journalist you weigh how much you should criticize the president, because he's black, what have you, but then you have to do it because ultimately you're a journalist. Journalists have to, black people have to, white people, Hispanic. We all must hold him to this because, as he said, it is an issue for the country, not just for one demographic.

He said this in a long (longer than this) response to Jake Tapper. I don't know what Jake Tapper's question actually was, as it's not on the video.

I said back in the 70's (I'm almost as old as Vic*) that PC would be the death of America. Once the left started hyphenating people, we became balkanized. Back in the 1930s, journalists in the US knew Stalin was executing people in gulags and starving the Ukraine. They did not wish to make Socialism look negative so they suppressed knowledge about it. The Soviet Union was always portrayed glowingly because they wanted FDR to continue his Socialist policies.

I think they've always been this way, the only difference is with the internet conservatives are actually able to communicate with each other.

A friend in junior high challenged me to a game with set she found in a school storage closet, and I beat her with almost no mental effort even though I had not seen a board or played a game since the age of 5! The reason: When you learn it young, your brain actually forms around the chess-knowledge pathways. Very much like learning a language when you are a toddler. And it really is good for kids' brains and thought patterns. Teaches foresight, planning and patience.

I'd recommend the following for books:
1) Winning Chess, How to see three moves ahead (Chernev & Reinfeld). What I learned with to start, and the best "beginner's tactics" book I've ever seen. Unfortunately it's long out of print. If you can't find a reasonably-priced copy (or scan) online, you can try Susan Polgar's Chess Tactics for Champions.
2) Logical Chess Move by Move (Chernev). Annotated games meant for beginning players.
3) Complete Endgame Course (Silman). An excellent endgame book, divided into sections to read as you get stronger.

The other main thing is to DON'T get any opening books. The only thing for openings that should be read (for now) are general principles, which you can get just online or from of Reinfeld's general strat books.

Play a lot. At the start, open each game with 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 - open games of these types have a lot more tactics early which is what you want. You won't get bored of that for a while, lots of choices for white's third (Bc4/Bb5/Nc3/d4/c3) to continue with.

The downside to that is becoming a "predictable" player, but in my experience few non-pro poker players are good at keeping track of the playing styles of everyone around the table. Another way to describe my technique: "Fold your way to success." I do a LOT of early folding. But that way I don't waste chips on bad or low-percentage hands. I can go all night with a small small stack of chips. I'm good at crawling back from near-elimination to break-even or better.

293 Well, spurred on by all the chess talk, I just played a game against my computer. I set its skill level close to my own so I wouldn't be killed. I got a superior position but got into time pressure. I blundered and lost a bishop, but gained a passed pawn which I advanced. A few moves later I realized that I was in good shape despite the loss of material. But then I lost on time. The computer gave me the option of continuing the game anyway, and then resigned three moves later! It couldn't stop the pawn. All in all, a pretty exciting game.
