DOOM...and other discontents
— Monty

DOOOOM

Here's a quick jolt of DOOM to send you off with the metallic taste of defeat, despair, and ruin in your mouth.

California is so boned: San Jose, in the heart of high-tech silicon valley, is being pushed to the brink by lavish pension and benefit costs.

Detroit has passed the "boned" stage and is now lying in state in a casket in the parlor. Visitors are encouraged to donate money to the pension fund in lieu of flowers.

Number of NJ retirees who have $100K+ pensions climbs 75 percent in three years.

Megan McArdle thinks the collapse of the Mt Gox echange will spell DOOM for Bitcoin, but I don't agree. Mt Gox is just an exchange, and there are other exchanges. The currency has always been wildly volatile, but it fills a niche. And even if the currency itself does collapse, other digital cryptocurrencies will rise to take its place because the demand is there. (The Mt Gox CEO responds with a non-response.)

More on the demise of the Mt Gox Bitcoin exchange. There's a reason that trust networks are a necessary part of a viable currency regime.

E. J. Dionne has probably never read so much as a paragraph of anything by Mises or Hayek. I think we can take that as a given. But then, there is a long-standing disdain for the Austrian School of economics in both the academic world and the public-policy world. Yet the love for Keynesianism (or modern variants thereof) continues unabated in those precincts, despite a century of miserable failure of the Keynesian principles. If you're struck by the parallels with Marxist theory, well...you're not alone. It's just more proof to me that for a leftist, ideology trumps everything else, even personal well-being.

2 In a revelation missing from the official investigations of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the FBI placed a human source in direct contact with Osama bin Laden in 1993 and ascertained that the al Qaeda leader was looking to finance terrorist attacks in the United States, according to court testimony in a little-noticed employment dispute case.

The information the FBI gleaned back then was so specific that it helped thwart a terrorist plot against a Masonic lodge in Los Angeles, the court records reviewed by The Washington Times show.
“It was the only source I know in the bureau where we had a source right in al Qaeda, directly involved,” Edward J. Curran, a former top official in the FBI’s Los Angeles office, told the court in support of a discrimination lawsuit filed against the bureau by his former agent Bassem Youssef.
Mr. Curran gave the testimony in 2010 to an essentially empty courtroom, and thus it escaped notice from the media or terrorism specialists. The Times was recently alerted to the existence of the testimony while working on a broader report about al QaedaÂ’s origins.

4 The problem with Keynesian economics is that the state has now taken the decision from us.  If we won't spend ourselves into debt in order to reflate the bubble, the state will borrow    in our name     and do it for us, whether we like it or not.

Anyone with half a brain held none of their coin there. Unfortunately, this episode has shown that there are a startlingly high number of idiots... which is really my only worry with regards to the future of Bitcoin. The security works... if you're not an idiot. Tech has to be idiot proof. Can idiocy be averted? Trusted hardware wallets and escrow are probably going to be the norm in the next few years for it to succeed.

Obama eases penalties for businesses hiring illegal immigrants

Washington Times: http://tinyurl.com/jvtbjbk

The Obama administration regularly cuts a break for businesses that hire illegal immigrants, reducing their fines by an average of 40 percent from what they should be, according to an audit released Tuesday that suggests the government could be doing more to go after unscrupulous employers.

According to the audit, conducted by the Homeland Security Department’s inspector general, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement cut one business’s fine from $4.9 million to slightly more than $1 million — a 78 percent drop.

Investigators said the reduction is legal, but it may be undercutting the administrationÂ’s goal of getting tough on businesses that hire illegal immigrants...

Oh, that's the    "administration's" goal?      Is it?   Really?    Because you could have fooled the fuck out of me.

More at the link.

Here's my favorite part.

“The knowledge that fines can be significantly reduced may diminish the effectiveness of fines as a deterrent to hiring unauthorized workers,” the inspector general said...

37 My completely uninformed opinion on MT Gox, and the one I'm going with is this: Feds, who want to see the destruction of the competing and unregulable currency had been buying it with their own printed money for a while now, and staged a big selloff. To their utter luck, Mt Gox couldn't cover the selling because they were missing a sizable chunk due to internal theft. BUT - Mt Gox is just one exchange, and was already a target for destruction, and that had already served to decentralize trading Bitcoin for cash anyway. It went from a ferw large exchanges, to thousands of smaller exchanges, so Bitcoin will survive this, and if it gets down to $100 I might buy some again.

48 Here's something else to think about:

For years, Hollywood has portrayed in political thrillers corrupt American agencies who are trying to steal the freedoms of American's through all kinds of deviousness and corruption.  These activities ALWAYS happen in Republican, or at least right leaning administrations.

Now, many of these activities are happening right now in real life - corruption, payola, graft - and it's all OK.  Why?

It's OK because Republicans aren't doing it.  Democrats are never portrayed as evil.  Therefore, even if Democrats are doing it, it can't be evil because Democrats aren't - can't be - evil.

51 also thought Keynesian philosophy dictated buying back debt during good times, not to keep government spending going. Which they do. ----------- That is true - by the book Keynes never said to run chronic deficits. However, my problems with Keynes don't really run with that part of his fiscal policy. It's more a case of the whole "aggregate demand" concept. I don't believe such a thing exists, at least not in a way that macro policies can do anything to impact. Keynesian monetary policy has also been misinterpreted, IMO....it tells you that inflation and unemployment are diametric opposites, and unemployment as a symptom of restrictive money can be cured by loosening the money. Thing is, at or near equilibrium loosening the money supply can't create employment. I don't believe Keynes ever said it could, but that hasn't stopped the Fed from doing it anyway. When this roller coaster started we didn't have much of a monetary policy problem....it was fiscal. It remains fiscal, and monetary policy can't address fiscal sins for any real length of time.

Police Probe Threatening "1% Graffiti" Left on Atherton Homes

CBS Frisco:  http://tinyurl.com/nezdgl3

ATHERTON (KPIX 5) – Vandals have targeted one of the Bay Area’s wealthiest communities and their handiwork has gotten the attention of the FBI.

Last Sunday, multi-million dollar homes in Atherton had offensive graffiti sprayed on them. The graffiti was found on walls, fences and even a car.

Many of the messages said “F*** the 1%,” a reference to the income inequality between the top one percent of Americans and the rest of the population.

“It’s terrible,” said one neighbor who identified herself as Diane. “Yeah, it’s a terrible thing to do and to be here in town.”

More at the link.

I do love how this warrants FBI investigation, btw.   Cute.   I bet if my house got spray painted "Fuck the 1%," I'd be lucky to rate a black-and-white.

The Nevada Democrat made the surprising move amid escalating Democratic resistance in the wake of a Congressional Budget Office report released last week estimating that hiking the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour could cost the equivalent of 500,000 jobs by late 2016.

Reid has not yet unified his caucus on the issue, which is a constant in the DemocratsÂ’ election-year playbook. Of the 55 senators who caucus with the Democrats, only 32 have signed on as official co-sponsors of Sen. Tom HarkinÂ’s (D-Iowa) bill.

Florida Democrat: Without Immigration Reform, Where Will We Get Our Landscapers and Maids?

Free Beacon: http://tinyurl.com/nmcc7q6

Florida Democratic congressional candidate Alex Sink said immigration reform was important at a Tuesday debate because, without it, it would be difficult for employers to find people to clean hotel rooms and do landscaping.

“Immigration reform is important in our country,” she said. “We have a lot of employers over on the beaches that rely upon workers and especially in this high-growth environment, where are you going to get people to work to clean our hotel rooms or do our landscaping? We don’t need to put those employers in a position of hiring undocumented and illegal workers.”

However, my problems with Keynes don't really run with that part of his fiscal policy. It's more a case of the whole "aggregate demand" concept. I don't believe such a thing exists, at least not in a way that macro policies can do anything to impact.

-

I believe it really boils down to the fact that our betters cannot grasp the idea that the invisible hand works.  They demand central planning despite well over a century    of      hard data that proves central planning cannot work, and is even less efficient than allowing the individuals that make up the market to sink or swim.

109 President Obama’s Internal Revenue Service today quietly released a series of Obamacare “Health Care Tax Tips” warning Americans that they must obtain “qualifying” health insurance – as defined by the federal government – or face a “shared responsibility payment” when filing their tax returns in 2015. The term “shared responsibility payment” refers to the Obamacare individual mandate tax, one of at least seven tax hikes in the healthcare law that directly hit families making less than $250,000 per year.

In “Four Tax Facts about the Health Care Law for Individuals” the agency writes:

Your 2014 tax return will ask if you had insurance coverage or qualified for an exemption. If not, you may owe a shared responsibility payment when you file in 2015.

In “The Individual Shared Responsibility Payment- An Overview” the agency warns Americans they must prove they were covered each and every month of the year:

For any month in 2014 that you or any of your dependents donÂ’t maintain coverage and donÂ’t qualify for an exemption, you will need to make an individual shared responsibility payment with your 2014 tax return filed in 2015.

When we obviously should defer to the parents, we don't, and the state moves in with full force. Meanwhile, when it's clear that the parent is simply incapable of raising even a pet rock, for some odd reason they get the kid back 3-4 times (after which it's too late.) I have no idea how we got it backwards, but there it is. (It's also why it'll never be fixed, one place where there might be legitimate use of state power, protecting kids, but we can't give them any more because they've already fucked up what they have.)

It's a complex set of algorithms that computer graphics cards "solve" over time to create or mine a Bitcoin.  Every round of algorithms that are solved yields a finite number of Bitcoins, and each successive round takes longer to solve and produces less yield.  Eventually, the amount of processing time will become so great and cost prohibitive that the yield of Bitcoins will essentially equal zero.  It's like entropy.

Some highly motivated individuals have taken upon themselves to set up very high-end GPU mining workstations with hundreds of cards all linked together to work in mining Bitcoins.  I'm talking tens of thousands of dollars.

174 I love the idiot from the Public Pension Coalition in the Detroit article: "Wall Street, which posted record profits in 2013, can afford to pay for the damage it reaped on the city." The real problem here is not that people say this, but that enough people will lap that shit up. This is why the people who think we're going to win an intellectual argument with the left with the truth are self deluding.

193 Except that round these parts a huge source of foster kids is from meth country. There's that. I think with any form of drug-related reasoning (addiction, dealing, etc.) they want to give the parents as many chances as possible (which often translates into too many) because a) it gives the State some hope that they won't be on the hook for this kid for the rest of his life and b) it (supposedly) gives the parents a good reason to get (and stay) clean. I believe (though I have no first-, or even second-, hand evidence on this) the same is true for women who got to jail for prostitution. Typically, the "over reach" cases are cases where a child was physically harmed; CPS (or whatever your state calls them) are always ready to believe the worst of parents in those cases.

194 Posted by: backhoe at February 26, 2014 09:51 AM (ULH4o) I've seen this story on less conservative sites as well (like CBS local.) Which is bad from a PR perspective. I have some insight into hospital PR from my current field, and if this blows up nationally, it's bad for the hospital. Assuming only a few facts alleged are true, it makes the hospital look remarkably bad. And those alleged facts are actually quite provable: 1) She was diagnosed by a doctor at Tufts 2) They're docs overruled. 3) When the parents said "we trust Doc A" they went all "DCFS NOW!" on them. If this were a case of a clear medical crank, I think the hospital could spin it pretty well. (See also: Daniel Hauser case from 2008-2009 in MI.) But Tufts is respected enough that I think that narrative isn't going to fly, which makes the case look bad for the hospital. FWIW, I'm sad to say such shit is not entirely uncommon. My MIL has a seizure disorder from a brain injury. She's being treated by the most well known seizure specialists in the area. Meanwhile she went in for some in patient PT after a fall, and the house doc went all "I AM THE KINGFISH!" and lowered her seizure meds because of a blood test result. Never called the Neurologists, got his test result back and made his call. MIL starts having petites again the next day. FWIW, I went all "YOU WILL FEAR MY WRATH" on the place but got HIPAA blocked, and by that I mean they made up things that HIPAA doesn't say to shut me down. Going any farther was going to put me on bad (worse) terms with people who control the job market here, so I backed off.

It's a financial no-brainer for healthy people in a certain age bracket who happen to be men.

Posted by: SE Pa Moron [/i] at February 26, 2014 06:01 AM (CnA98)

199
The annual payment amount for 2014 is the greater of: 1 percent of your household income that is above the tax return threshold for your filing status, such as Married Filing Jointly or single, or Your familyÂ’s flat dollar amount, which is $95 per adult and $47.50 per child, limited to a maximum of $285. [pro-rated]

For example, a single adult under age 65 with household income less than $19,650 (but more than $10,150) would pay the $95 flat rate.  However, a single adult under age 65 with household income greater than $19,650 would pay an annual payment based on the 1 percent rate.

So, a $50k single gets hit with a $500 tax -- er fee -- no, offering! if they go without the wonder of Ocare for the year.

210 We've been through this a zillion times: there are no Keynsians. The "variants" are people who use the term "Keynsian" to shield the fact that they are actually socialists. Keynes openly stated that governments should save in times of plenty, to pay for the times of need. You might disagree with the effectiveness of this, but you can't disagree that this is what he said. And nobody, but nobody, has ever done it. Our congress and our president are power-whores, and they will spend every cent they think they can get away with. They will borrow until the people scream, and then keep on borrowing. They are no more Keynsian than the Fed is Monetarist. Friedman weeps in his grave over what the last two decades of monetary policy have done. That's the fundamental problem: there are no theories at work. There are no "schools of thought" that you can point to and say "that's what we are doing." There's a reason this post is called Doom. It's because "that's the stated policy of the USA, EU, BOJ, and damned near everywhere else." The few economies that show Austrian-School traits are doing well (Switzerland, Singapore). This means nothing. Politicians don't give a damn about the people, other than their usefulness as voting idiots. Obama, Abe, Hollande, etc. would sodomize a kangaroo on the floor of the UN General Assembly before they'd adopt this kind of policy.

213 A reminder of how insane the healthcare situation has become. I have no coverage myself and my doctors wanted some updated lab work. I told the lab I was a cash customer. I received a two part bill. The first part indicated that if I had insurance it would have been billed $373 for the blood draw and lab work. The second part was to show that the cash price was $73.

220 My larger point was that they tried to underplay the tax associated with it till now, the soft sell isn't working so with one month to go they're easing into the hard sell. I can see the IRS doing that. I can also see -- and as much as we denigrate the youth that helped put Obama into office -- that they have so much computational power in their gadgets that they can do the math pretty quickly. They were all for getting 'free' health insurance. Now that it's a serious money crunch for them to actually purchase pricey health insurance they still have the option; 1. Paying for it and losing nearly every penny of disposable income they once enjoyed 2. Paying a penalty which is only some tiny percentage of paying a premium for overpriced insurance and enjoying having disposable income again One option is way, way cheaper then the other. I guess we'll see which one they choose and ObamaCare will either succeed or fail based on their choice.
