Here's a quick jolt of DOOM to send you off with the metallic taste of defeat, despair, and ruin in your mouth.
California is so boned: San Jose, in the heart of high-tech silicon valley, is being pushed to the brink by lavish pension and benefit costs.
Detroit has passed the "boned" stage and is now lying in state in a casket in the parlor. Visitors are encouraged to donate money to the pension fund in lieu of flowers.
Number of NJ retirees who have $100K+ pensions climbs 75 percent in three years.
Megan McArdle thinks the collapse of the Mt Gox echange will spell DOOM for Bitcoin, but I don't agree. Mt Gox is just an exchange, and there are other exchanges. The currency has always been wildly volatile, but it fills a niche. And even if the currency itself does collapse, other digital cryptocurrencies will rise to take its place because the demand is there. (The Mt Gox CEO responds with a non-response.)
More on the demise of the Mt Gox Bitcoin exchange. There's a reason that trust networks are a necessary part of a viable currency regime.
E. J. Dionne has probably never read so much as a paragraph of anything by Mises or Hayek. I think we can take that as a given. But then, there is a long-standing disdain for the Austrian School of economics in both the academic world and the public-policy world. Yet the love for Keynesianism (or modern variants thereof) continues unabated in those precincts, despite a century of miserable failure of the Keynesian principles. If you're struck by the parallels with Marxist theory, well...you're not alone. It's just more proof to me that for a leftist, ideology trumps everything else, even personal well-being.

The information the FBI gleaned back then was so specific that it helped thwart a terrorist plot against a Masonic lodge in Los Angeles, the court records reviewed by The Washington Times show.
“It was the only source I know in the bureau where we had a source right in al Qaeda, directly involved,” Edward J. Curran, a former top official in the FBI’s Los Angeles office, told the court in support of a discrimination lawsuit filed against the bureau by his former agent Bassem Youssef.
Mr. Curran gave the testimony in 2010 to an essentially empty courtroom, and thus it escaped notice from the media or terrorism specialists. The Times was recently alerted to the existence of the testimony while working on a broader report about al QaedaÂ’s origins.

Obama eases penalties for businesses hiring illegal immigrants
Washington Times: http://tinyurl.com/jvtbjbk
The Obama administration regularly cuts a break for businesses that hire illegal immigrants, reducing their fines by an average of 40 percent from what they should be, according to an audit released Tuesday that suggests the government could be doing more to go after unscrupulous employers.
According to the audit, conducted by the Homeland Security Department’s inspector general, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement cut one business’s fine from $4.9 million to slightly more than $1 million — a 78 percent drop.
Investigators said the reduction is legal, but it may be undercutting the administrationÂ’s goal of getting tough on businesses that hire illegal immigrants...
Oh, that's the "administration's" goal? Is it? Really? Because you could have fooled the fuck out of me.
More at the link.
Here's my favorite part.
“The knowledge that fines can be significantly reduced may diminish the effectiveness of fines as a deterrent to hiring unauthorized workers,” the inspector general said...

For years, Hollywood has portrayed in political thrillers corrupt American agencies who are trying to steal the freedoms of American's through all kinds of deviousness and corruption. These activities ALWAYS happen in Republican, or at least right leaning administrations.
Now, many of these activities are happening right now in real life - corruption, payola, graft - and it's all OK. Why?
It's OK because Republicans aren't doing it. Democrats are never portrayed as evil. Therefore, even if Democrats are doing it, it can't be evil because Democrats aren't - can't be - evil.

Police Probe Threatening "1% Graffiti" Left on Atherton Homes
CBS Frisco: http://tinyurl.com/nezdgl3
ATHERTON (KPIX 5) – Vandals have targeted one of the Bay Area’s wealthiest communities and their handiwork has gotten the attention of the FBI.
Last Sunday, multi-million dollar homes in Atherton had offensive graffiti sprayed on them. The graffiti was found on walls, fences and even a car.
Many of the messages said “F*** the 1%,” a reference to the income inequality between the top one percent of Americans and the rest of the population.
“It’s terrible,” said one neighbor who identified herself as Diane. “Yeah, it’s a terrible thing to do and to be here in town.”
More at the link.
I do love how this warrants FBI investigation, btw. Cute. I bet if my house got spray painted "Fuck the 1%," I'd be lucky to rate a black-and-white.
Also, hey, fucking CBS Frisco: that 1% vs 99% bullshit is just that - bullshit. Maybe do a little research next time, you bunch of assmunching dickweeds.

Reid has not yet unified his caucus on the issue, which is a constant in the DemocratsÂ’ election-year playbook. Of the 55 senators who caucus with the Democrats, only 32 have signed on as official co-sponsors of Sen. Tom HarkinÂ’s (D-Iowa) bill.

Florida Democrat: Without Immigration Reform, Where Will We Get Our Landscapers and Maids?
Free Beacon: http://tinyurl.com/nmcc7q6
Florida Democratic congressional candidate Alex Sink said immigration reform was important at a Tuesday debate because, without it, it would be difficult for employers to find people to clean hotel rooms and do landscaping.
“Immigration reform is important in our country,” she said. “We have a lot of employers over on the beaches that rely upon workers and especially in this high-growth environment, where are you going to get people to work to clean our hotel rooms or do our landscaping? We don’t need to put those employers in a position of hiring undocumented and illegal workers.”
The racism and inurement to what is essentially slavery that festers on the left is mind-boggling.

B) The government would never use their money to cover their own gubmint pension shortfalls

However, my problems with Keynes don't really run with that part of his fiscal policy. It's more a case of the whole "aggregate demand" concept. I don't believe such a thing exists, at least not in a way that macro policies can do anything to impact.
-
I believe it really boils down to the fact that our betters cannot grasp the idea that the invisible hand works. They demand central planning despite well over a century of hard data that proves central planning cannot work, and is even less efficient than allowing the individuals that make up the market to sink or swim.

In “Four Tax Facts about the Health Care Law for Individuals” the agency writes:
Your 2014 tax return will ask if you had insurance coverage or qualified for an exemption. If not, you may owe a shared responsibility payment when you file in 2015.
In “The Individual Shared Responsibility Payment- An Overview” the agency warns Americans they must prove they were covered each and every month of the year:
For any month in 2014 that you or any of your dependents donÂ’t maintain coverage and donÂ’t qualify for an exemption, you will need to make an individual shared responsibility payment with your 2014 tax return filed in 2015.

That's more or less what I was saying. This is just a ploy by Moonbeam and his cronies to get more money into the gubmint coffers that they can then spend.

You can't be a real Jew because all of the Jews I know trust that the government and OBama will take care of them and protect them from Iran and Texans and gun people in Americca.

It's a complex set of algorithms that computer graphics cards "solve" over time to create or mine a Bitcoin. Every round of algorithms that are solved yields a finite number of Bitcoins, and each successive round takes longer to solve and produces less yield. Eventually, the amount of processing time will become so great and cost prohibitive that the yield of Bitcoins will essentially equal zero. It's like entropy.
Some highly motivated individuals have taken upon themselves to set up very high-end GPU mining workstations with hundreds of cards all linked together to work in mining Bitcoins. I'm talking tens of thousands of dollars.

They are grounding the warthogs?
There was a big stink in Connecticut a few years ago when the Air National Guard lost its A-10 wing.
What are we going to do for close infantry support when Rhode Island attacks?

There are people who still, still think Obaaama is cool, hip and awesome.
Think about that--that is our DOOM.
The level of pathetic-ness of one's life that they must project upon Obaaama what they wish to be in order to hope to claim a bit of reflected light . . . .

OK no problem. Everything the Left does results in the opposite of their intent, so I expect it'll be mostly leftards that get drafted and killed, in wave after wave of stupidity.

That $95.00 minimum is for damn few. I'm looking at over $500.00 next year, $1250.00 or so after that.

>>Die meth heads, die.
.
.A significant portion of them do quite often from reading the Paper here in Kentucky. An odd thing I noticed after moving here was there are landlords who have been criminally charged for not disclosing property they are renting has been a meth lab in the past. Just had another one go down for that here in Scott County yesterday.

The annual payment amount for 2014 is the greater of: 1 percent of your household income that is above the tax return threshold for your filing status, such as Married Filing Jointly or single, or Your familyÂ’s flat dollar amount, which is $95 per adult and $47.50 per child, limited to a maximum of $285. [pro-rated]
For example, a single adult under age 65 with household income less than $19,650 (but more than $10,150) would pay the $95 flat rate. However, a single adult under age 65 with household income greater than $19,650 would pay an annual payment based on the 1 percent rate.
IRS
So, a $50k single gets hit with a $500 tax -- er fee -- no, offering! if they go without the wonder of Ocare for the year.

For me, the bare bones Bronze policy is going to run about $4500.00 a year through the exchange. Just one company in my region, no options. So yeah I'm better off taking my chances for a while, especially with the $6700.00 deductible and copay.
My larger point was that they tried to underplay the tax associated with it till now, the soft sell isn't working so with one month to go they're easing into the hard sell.

The lower class pays more and more taxes, and the middle class falls into the lower class, all to fund the ever growing cost of government. The rich, like the Google and Facebook crews, are silent. They are so rich they don't even feel the tax increases.
Why doesn't Zuckerberg fund the San Jose pensions or the library or the street repair? Why does he hate poor people?
