— Monty

A little DOOM to darken your day, my groovy babies. Monty's DOOM is like Monty's love: hard and fast and unexpected and unsatisfying and kind of sad.
Actual headline: "ObamaCare both sucks and blows." I'm sensing some hostility here. I dunno. Maybe it's just me.
Democrats to Obama: "Hit me again, Ike! And this time put some stank on it!"
...[T]hey seem to have arbitrarily picked a weekend to take the website down, without considering itÂ’s probably the most important enrollment day of the month.Wotta bunch of maroons.
How do you know when you're DOOMed? When every choice ends in disaster, despair, or insolvency.
To Teh Krugman: Welcome to the supply-side!
What do people do when their unemployment insurance runs out? Shockingly, they find work. It may not be high-paying work; it may not be the traditional 9-5 work; it may not be an actual "job" in the normal sense. But necessity, as they say, is the mother of invention and keeping body and soul together is one of the greatest motivators there is. The real problem is that the Federal Government's definition of "employed" is both politically warped and very archaic.
ZOMG STOCKS ARE DOWN 5% FOR THE YEAR! Except...it's only February. The stock market is volatile these days; we all know that. I'll wait until late summer or early fall before I start to be concerned.
It is natural for markets to go up and down. This year is no different, and there is little in the market that warrants changing your long-term strategic plan with which you entered the year. This presumes, of course, that there is any investor left in America with such an old-fashioned thing as a "long-term strategic plan".
It turns out that Obama's "MyRA" intiative is a really bad idea. Just like every other idea His Majesty the King has had since taking office.

The article states that over a third use social security or some other switch to another government benefit, some (doesn't say how much, this is a really really well documented "study" here) use their savings or help from family (doesn't say for how long).
Then the article proceeds to point out how lately all that stuff has gotten harder to do and worse conditions apply.
Yeah that's a really good example about how the unemployed are shirking looking for work.
Did writing that assuage your guilt for your anger at being asked to help your fellow citizens and being too greedy to say yes? Or for those who felt vindicated for being greedy read just enough to make you think you've been right all along to demand that the few dollars you have to give up from YOUR job is too much though that makes you look feel like the insensitive whiny little greedy little pig that you are?
Monty's back with lies, speculations and straw men.
What no blame for the Baby Boomers? (because of course all generations are monolithic and voted in lock step through the years)
No examples of old people being wasteful of poor young folks' hard earned money? (that they would've spent frivolously themselves anyway.)

All that a Republican winning will do is make sure that the GOP gets the blame when the eventual hard choices must be made.

I watched It's A Disaster the other night and enjoyed it quite a bit. I will warn people though that it's your basic indie relationship type movie just with added oh hey massive disaster on top. America Ferrera is the only one of the lot who has the appropriate response.

Am I reading the MyRA story right in that you can only save up to $15,000? That seems like a very small amount of money to help you retire on. I guess it is supposed to be one part of a bigger investment scheme, but still.
Posted by: Aetius451AD at February 12, 2014 07:10 PM (TGgNi)
Yes you are. Once your MyGubmintRA account hits $15,000, you are required to roll it over into a traditional Roth IRA.
It is little more than a way to keep the welfare state afloat a couple months longer. The "beauty" of it is that it will suck money from the somewhat-productive members of the ObamiNation (i.e. those who work while suckling at the teat).
The disturbing part of that article is what the USPS is looking to do. That sort of shit sank GMAC and put it in government hands.

On the Democratic side for 2016, the two top-tier candidates, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden (stop laughing), are both next-in-liners. Clinton is the indisputable front-runner: SheÂ’s more popular; she was the runner-up in 2008; sheÂ’s the dashboard saint of elite feminist groups; and she and her husband have been working the party machinery nonstop while Biden has been, if you believe the Onion, waxing his vintage Trans Am in the White House driveway.

I know it's just a sock, but any association with John McCain and our flag sends me into... well, you get my drift.
He's a coward and a traitor.

Beer, bratwurst, gumption.
Although honestly--the weather is not a problem, it's the continual incessant crybabying about it that will drive you into a violent depressive rage. Buy a fucking hat and get on with life. Fuck.
Fucking pantywaists, raising a generation of milksops.

I said the same earlier, but was told I didn't understand some mental illness called "SAD"
Do with that as you deem necessary.

Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., acknowledged Wednesday that the report does not predict that two million Americans will be laid off -- in fact, people will consider their options and choose to work less.
The GOP - sounding more and more like the Democrat Party every single day.

What we teach/taught, they learned. I'll be glad to pass on the flag. There's some good critters out there.

SAD is about daylight, not snow. It starts to hit in the fall and should be improving now, because days have been getting longer for six weeks.

This drives me up the wall. I haven't heard a single pol who put it in the right terms: people will choose to go on welfare instead of working. That is the cold stark reality. We can't pay our bills already but we're going to up the ante and take on more expenses.

It'll depend on how the 2014 elections go. If the repubs take the senate and keep the house, he'll rescind it in a heartbeat.

I appreciate some are affected by SAD, having lived in a northern clime for years I can see how it would happen.
as a rule I find it hard imaging how we are generally, as a nation, than we were a hundred years ago. I would have thought a guy living in a sod hut having the local natives try to scalp him while he planted stuff on his roof, hunted for dinner, hunted for possum, would be more depressed. I suppose depressed guys in sod huts did not last as long as depressed guys in condos.
Posted by: yankeefifth at February 12, 2014 07:52 PM (rDidD)
That's because the old-timers didn't have hot cocoa, and if it was their parents' sod hut, it was because they were caring for their parents, not the other way around.

no, I get it. In Shemya, our boys out there for 6+ months, the unstable ones, would lose their shit. Lots of suicides.
but the cause wasn't the sun, it was the underlying instability.
The extreme conditions just magnify preexisting problems, not cause them.

It might just be me, but I think a majority of this crap came about because someone, somewhere said "ZMOG, the government needs to do something!!!11!" One hundred years ago, you didn't work, you didn't eat. Huge motivator. Once the western democracies started implementing the welfare state it went downhill from there. Stop and think, a hundred years ago, were there womyn's studies, LGBQTZMG studies, things like that? Sure as hell wouldn't have gotten a job with that degree, so you would have starved. Now, not so much.

We kind of had the same issue when I was stationed up in Keflivik, Iceland. Wasn't as remote, but six months of dark and six of sunlight did a number on some of the less stable.
