Emergency Polarvortex Open Thread [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

Apparently the polarvortex sucked up all the cobloggers, so here's a fresh thread for you to play in while we wait and watch the snow fall.

Speaking of snow, it is snowing here now. We've blown past the two inches predicted and look to be headed to some real accumulation. I favor doing a quick shovel after a few inches (TWSS!) and spreading out some salt. Makes the second round of shoveling go much better.

Mercifully, none of my neighbors use snowblowers, which I hate with the cold of a thousand Al Gore winters. That reminds me...

15 I want to start a Prog Rock band just so we can make a concept album called "Polar Vortex." It will be 60 minutes long, consisting of two 30-minute suites. With plenty of widdly-widdly solos. And MiniMoogs. And harps. And Mellotrons. Maybe some sitars. Definitely some gongs. Maybe I can get Jon Anderson to write the lyrics.

20 It's a Saturnalia miracle! Well, today's looking up. It's up to 56 degrees in the office, the plumbers showed up to fix the pipe that burst over my desk last night and the water's back on so that we can stop going over to the office building next door to use the bathroom. 208 124 Oh Polar Vortex goodness.
I saw some Rocket Surgeon on Megyn Kelly's show last night explain that global warmening was behind the polar vortex because as we all know, hot air rises and cold air falls, so all the hot air from the equator and what-not has risen to the northern pole and the cold air has fallen down to North America. Hence, it's global warmening's fault.
Gravity, how does it work?

I give thanks that I'm not in the Midwest/East anymore where you have to crack through layers of ice to shovel the heavy wet snow. What a joy it is to be able to clear the walk with a leaf blower.

My poor sister and her hubby    had moved to PA a few years back; specifically the year when the mid-Atlantic states kept getting pounded with snowstorms dumping 3 feet of snow on them over and over again.  They hadn't brought a shovel with them, and all the stores were sold out.  So being crafty and innovative NHites, they bought an industrial-sized dustpan and used that and an old bent license plate to keep their cars cleared.

I gave them a shovel the next    time they came to visit.

283 Don't know if this was posted or not - Letter from Allen West (and others) to Boehner regarding his piss poor performance with Benghazi. http://tinyurl.com/lfb4kve Some analysts believe your inaction and passivity towards getting to the truth concerning Benghazi is because you were briefed on the intelligence and special operations activities in Libya as a member of the “Super 8.” You may possess “guilty knowledge.” We recall how then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi developed a form of “amnesia” concerning a documented briefing she received on so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques” – later termed “torture” for political purposes. Are you in the same position as your predecessor? Are you dodging a legitimate, thorough, coordinated investigation of Benghazi because it will damage your political position as Speaker? You should be embarrassed that members of Congress, and your own party, are forced to file Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with Obama administration agencies to get basic information about the Benghazi issue. What a sad and pathetic statement about the operations of House standing committees looking into this tragedy that FOIA has become the last resort of even Republican Members seeking the truth!

The polar vortex isn't new.  It's not something that appears suddenly   out of thin air.   It's always there, swirling around the north and south poles.  The MFM is trying to play it up like it's this rare and unforeseen weather   event;  like it's a fucking Sharknado.   It's not.    The polar vortex gets bigger in winter   and smaller in summer.  Sometimes when it   expands    it expands further than usual.   This is not unheard of.

Like I said yesterday,  the polar vortex is like El Nino:  it happens.   The MFM doesn't know shit from shinola.

Someone stole my riding mower a few years ago while I was at work.  I asked grand youngins if they would mow my yard for $40 with a push mover.  They said sure so I bought a push mower.  They mowed it one time.

I mowed it in July with the push mower.  Then promptly went down and bought another riding mower.

Rush was talking about the increase in Gonorrhea and Syphilis amongst the MSM population today and, thanks to some bad writing, speculated it was due to gays not going in for checkups because of the homophobia.

Not true. They're different diseases and have different issues, but what I see at my job first of all is that gays will seek testing much more often than most - but mostly for HIV. They'll do the quick tests from the mouth swabs and - if negative - say they're good to go.

Secondly, in the case of Gonorrhea, it infects wherever the infection occured. So, if anal or pharyngeal, there can be few or no symptoms. This is common mostly since gays will use condoms for eveything but oral sex. Often, when they do go in for testing, the doctor or nurse will only obtain urine samples which, obviously, won't detect GC in sites other than the urethra. [in the case of women, urine may not even detect a vaginal infection - swabs are required. Lesbians think they can't get anything but that's erroneous too]

Lastly, syphilis is one that all of us track closely and had almost eradicated, so it's disappointing it's on the rise. It's often missed in diagnosis even by medical professionals and we still find people who were infected back in WW2 who were never treated for it. It's rarity makes it doubly hard for docs and nurses who may have never seen a case of syphilis ever.

We talk to every single person who pops a titer for syphilis in our County, and I know that's a goal in every State. The interview is desgned to figure out where the infection came from and to alert potential infected persons of the need for treatment. Unfortunately, many gay [and straight] persons refuse to disclose, mislead us so as to preserve their effed up relationships, or simply don't know who their partners are. There are many reasons for that, too many to list in an already long comment.
