Emergency Thursday Open Thread [Y-not]
— Open Blogger

Sooo... here's a fresh thread for you to enjoy until the Ewok wakes up. I assume putting this up will result in immediate stompening!

It's snowing here today, which is great for Utah (although bad for the plans I had today). Here's something funny below the jump: Epic Snow Fails

As I pointed out last night, WTF did the Charlotte mayor ever do to merit Sec. of Transportation? Actually, I DO know the answer to that. He raised a $10 million dollar loan to finance the Dem Nat. Convention, and then defaulted on the loan. So, he stole money, and bought an office with it. And, he is..., well, a black guy. So, no harm, no foul.

50 So, ladies and gents, I discovered something interesting yesterday. I'd been dropping hints at Mr Y-not about wanting to see Sleeping Beauty (the ballet) for Valentine's Day, but he's been somewhat preoccupied at work so he didn't seem to be moving on it. I was afraid the good seats would get snapped up, so I went ahead and got them yesterday. Told him last night. He was so relieved and happy that I'd done it. Definitely the right thing to do. While I was at it I told him "no flowers delivered". The couple of times he's done that the local florists here have totally botched it, resulting in tons of aggravation. (VD isn't really a big day for us, but the only time he would be free for that ballet happened to be 2/14.)

107 I can see how six inches or more might cause big problems in a state without snow plows and such, but a couple of inches lead to 18 hour commutes and people abandoning their cars? I'm not familiar enough with Atlanta to tell you, but that little doesn't normally lead to that kind of thing here in DFW (at least- not on anything like the same scale). I suspect there is some infrastructure or other "extra" problem that's actually causing the mass hysteria.

117 Giants passed fake ‘game-worn’ gear to fans so Eli could keep real items: lawsuit

Quarterback Eli Manning and New York Giants brass created bogus “game-worn” football gear to pass off as the real deal — and one of the forgeries is sitting in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, an explosive new lawsuit claims.

A helmet on display in the hallowed Canton, Ohio, gridiron museum — supposedly worn by Manning in Big Blue’s 2008 Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots — is just one of dozens of fake items the football superstar and his Giants cohorts have created to fool fans and make money from collectors over the years, the lawsuit alleges.

Other “forgeries” passed off on collectors include several Manning jerseys, two 2012 Super Bowl helmets and a 2004 “rookie season” helmet, according to court papers.

While I could split them in half they're that whacky size that's too big, but not double big. You can buy a whole pork but too (that's cut in half in the package) that's awesome for making pulled pork. We freeze one half, crockpot roast the other and then when we're ready for pork again we've got a big roast ready to go. I think it's like $1.20/lb.

The strip steaks I got were just as good as anything I was getting from my local grocery store before. Now I can't speak to lamb, I don't use it...well ever. As for the ground meat, you can actually buy the ground meat logs that haven't been processed. Having worked at a local grocer meat department I can tell you most grocers don't grind their meat anymore, it comes preground. The "grinder" in the store actually just aerates the meat that comes in rolls.

I quickly put the rental car into low gear and moved off toward the right side of the road (iirc, it was two lanes in each direction, mostly downhill). Most of the cars kept up their speed, whipping past me. After several minutes, we rounded a bend -- must've been a dozen cars of all varieties plowed into snowbanks on each side of the road. heh.

BJ's or Costco's sometimes has a first-time-one-day trial for prospective customers.  Ask if they will let you shop there after you tell them you are thinking of joining and want to see what kind of stuff they have.

I just have to figure out the right seasoning. I'm thinking rosemary, salt and pepper, but I'm a little lost after that...I have been consoling myself with a bottle of Jim Beam bourbon BBQ sauce. Oh, hey: http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/slow_and_low_country_ribs/ If I had more call for it, I'd probably buy a stand alone freezer unit and buy bulk.

Chique, I find Costco great for buying food for large gatherings because of the large sizes / portions they offer at pretty good prices.  But It doesnt work so well for routine perishable food for my family of four unless you eat the same thing day after day.  End up throwing alot out because we never finished it and its been in the fridge for 2 weeks. etc..

I'd have to differ with that first one. In much of LA County the Costcos are in places I'd otherwise not care to hang out. Especially the one on Sepulveda that was the site of a fatal armed robbery a few years ago.

The closest Costco to an upper middle-class neighborhood that I've been to would be the one in Westlake Village. It's location is a part of town that was primarily factories up until the late 80s. When Costco first announced their intent to put a store there, the locals fought it tooth and nail, insisting it would draw horrible traffic and a general undesirable element, though they were less vocal about the latter reason, depending on who they thought was listening. A few years later the store was open and the parking lot reliably dominated by BMWs and Mercedes Benz vehicles, along with the occasional Hummer.

The complaint about attracting the 'wrong element' was largely unfounded because that Costco was just the first of several to be added to the region, giving people in those disdained neighborhoods little reason to go all th way to Westlake to shop.

326 Hi Y-Not. Just returned from SLC and am glad the mountains are getting some much needed snow.

Due to snow in Atlanta our flight was cancelled the day before. We were bumped to first class on a flight to Orlando yesterday. A man came up to me at the gate and asked if we were boarding (I was spaced out and in need of caffine and recovering from mother-in-law). The man who asked me about boarding was Mitt Romney! I don't care what anyone says about him, he is a gentleman and, uh, ladies, looks better in person and close up, even early in the morning. Where was I? I had a brief conversation with him, introduced him to husband, and recovered nicely from the unexpected shock of the meeting. He was friendly, gracious, polite and had no assistants (like Hillary) or anyone carrying his bags or doing whatever Huma does for her. Can any of you imagine Baroque or Bill Clinton without entourage? Or not flying on a private plane but on Delta?

Anyway, it is too bad he did not deliver the SOTU address, as he might have mentioned something other than executive orders and ballyhoo.

I am traveling a lot but do check in here when I can. xoxo
