89 The "Naked Dating" thing is a crock. If they wanted to explore dating without all the visual things, why not have the contestants in paper bags? Maybe take it a step further and have them use one of those Transformer voice things. Strip them of all pretenses? Because body tone and shape tell you NOTHING about the person at all. I am not against nudity. Nudity is a fine thing. Just do not tell me this is some BOLD FRESH way of going about dating.

187 There was this tradition of using Latin in official state documents and correspondence. And then they started using French, ultimately, around, just guessing here, 1000 AD or so. So when Charlemagne (a Frank or German) was king of France, they were already using French in official documents. He accepted that. So French was not displaced by German.

232 Heh. I was talking with my adult daughter about languages, and tried to describe how the French swallow their final syllables. The Germans do more spitting type harsh sounds. I described Italian as more rhythmic and lilting. She summarized (in all innocence), "So, the French swallow, the Germans spit and the Italians go up and down." I don't know who was more embarrassed, her or me.

247 >>>How close would one come to the actual pronunciation of a French word in general if one just leaves off the last syllable? well there are a bunch of letters which are never pronounced in the final position. Regarding the whole last syllable-- there are also words where you pretty much ignore a long string of letters making up a syllable, but this is a limited thing, and generally involves the third person plural conjugation of verbs. For these conjugations, the verb will be something like "ils peuvent" (they can) but you'd say "eel peuve." the 3rd person plural conditional of reussir is something like "ils reussiaent" but you don't say that whole cluster of letters at the end. You'd say like Re-you-say. These "-ent" endings are often entirely ignored in spoken french, and they wind up sounding like the 3rd person singular forms. I can't think of many other places where an entire syllable is ignored, though. I know it happens. it's mostly just the last letter.

I think maybe Spanish and Italian use a lot of long vowels (easy to pick up by ear) and French uses more short ones and dipthongs and stuff like that so it's harder to hear them clearly (or tell the difference between "e" and "eu" and "u"). but the way a language is pronounced is easily mutable and can quickly diverge from the written form.

Gen. It migrated down to his legs which were swollen and full of fluid already, settled in there and went to town. I don't recall any natural Italian gingers, but I knew a few Jewish gingers The vast majority of Italian migration to America was from Sicily, Naples, Bari, and Calabria. Northerners didn't have nearly the financial incentive that the poor south had to emigrate. I've known some Northern Italians and they tended to have more Alpine features than Mediterranean, so it's not unheard of to have Italian gingers

Did anybody else who read "The Monster of Florence" get the idea that if you went hiking in Sardinia, you might just come across a couple of natives with shotguns who would say in Sardinian dialect, "Boy, you sure have a pretty mouth?"

Maybe it's just because of that one creepy Sardinian character who apparently would have sex with anything with a pulse. Mountainous, isolated, tribal...Sicily at least has some beautiful churches. I'm sorry if anybody reading this is of Sardinian ancestry, but it sounds as though the place was completely untouched by Italian high culture.

"The vast majority of Italian migration to America was from Sicily, Naples, Bari, and Calabria."

I think it was Thomas Sowell who pointed out that the Northern Italians who did move to America tended to settle in California wine country - they were the ones who started the first vineyards. Sowell said they were the only Italians who came here and gravitated to a rural area - the Southern Italians settled in the cities, where the jobs were.

When Northern Italians emigrated, more of them went to Argentina than the States. Argentina has a very high percentage of people of Italian ancestry.

584 NC Morons - Up to speed on Grocer-gate? Seems Gov. McCrory was visiting a local grocery store (now, when Michelle does that, people swoon), one of the clerks (who proved to be a documented, rabid, McCrory hater) asked McCrory if he needed help. When McCrory said 'No, thanks', the guy recognized him, and said 'Well, thanks for nothing!' And walked away. One of McCrory's aides complained to the management about the rude treatment. The management immediately fired the guy, which was appropriate. Annnnd then the media picked up on the story. Turns out the guy who was fired had a real sob story. He claims to be the only means of support for his deaf boyfriend , and now that nasty McCrory has had him fired. Boo-hoo-hoo.

587 It was employed the same way we used to (still do) avoid saying God or Jesus in non-religious contexts ("Christmas!" instead of "Christ," or "gosh darn" instead of g** d***.) Man, if you ever want to hear about a blashemuphism, I think that "Zounds!" should take the cake. (It's short for "God's Wounds" apparently). Been keeping it in my mental rolodex but have yet to spontaneously exclaim it when I stub my toe.
