Evening Link Dump
— Gabriel Malor

Just clearing out the browser tabs of links that I really should write up more fully, but don't have time for.

First up, Michelle Malkin has a long, personal piece at National Review about medical marijuana.

Molly Ball has a piece at the Atlantic on how Republicans are driving the current momentum for gay marriage.

Sean Davis has a piece at the Federalist on six absurd arguments made at the Hobby Lobby argument.

Nate Silver has a post at FiveThirtyEight taking a shot at former colleague Paul Krugman.

Patterico has a post at his site about Vox stumbling right out of the gate.

Maybe I'll come back to these tomorrow.

Bonus Videos [Ace]: A Chicago subway train's driver fell asleep while conducting the vehicle. The train jumped the tracks and... well, you'll see.

A worker trapped inside a blazing building escapes to the ledge, and then has to jump down to another ledge, to reach the fire ladder.

Watch to the end.

I love the high quality security video at O'Hare.  The silver blob can clearly be seen doing something.

You can tell the person's race and sex, but that is about it.  Is it because the cameras are unfocused, or because they bought them from one of Daley's or Blago's relatives?

61 Pro tip:  If you find yourself video recording a dramatic event, like a fire rescue and building collapse, try to  SOUND  like you have some reporting skills, because news sites will pay you for  it.

But don't let Republican congresscritter interns get ahold of it, they'll post it like it's  their own.

67 As I recall Malkin wasn't anti-vaccine so much as anti-Perry. Perry had supported* mandatory vaccines against HPV, and was snuggly with some of the manufacturers thereof. (Disclosure: I thought Perry was right for the wrong reasons.) Malkin went nuts over this.

[*The governor in Texas is close to being a figurehead, and it's a low-government state anyway, so "supporting" is pretty much all the governor can do.]

I always figured Malkin has some other bug up her butt about Perry, not really inclined to ask what, maybe Andrew Sullivan can ask her.

84 68 -

If the argument against HPV vaccination is that it's not the government's business to be telling people what to do, I'm all in with that.

If  the argument is that God doesn't want sluts to be protected from their slutty ways  (nevermind the fact that  many women acquire the virus from a partner who either doesn't know he's infected or has been cheating and didn't tell her), then such people making these arguments deserve a nice swift thwack on the side of the head with a KJV Bible.

86 @48 - The other shoe has not dropped yet on the Yee bust. Yee was an SF supervisor for years, and a fellow supe who's about to start serving some jail time fingered him a while back for extortion over building permits and business licenses. Can't assess the truth of the allegations but SF civil service is a spoils system with various races getting different pieces of the pie, building inspection and bus maintenance are heavily Asian... This was also a week after several Chinese state reps shot down an attempted ballot measure that'd have overturned Prop 209 and written racial preferences into the state constitution, something heavily favored (for now) by black and hispanic interests but toxic beyond belief to the Chinese who see this as a way to shut their kids out of college, who knows if there's an element of Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance payback from the state party hierarchy to the race-baiters at DOJ to the FBI.

But still, I've written papers that argue that it's precisely the mandates that provide a space for the anti-vax movement to operate in...)

And:

At my son’s two-month checkup, the pediatrician expected him to receive a triple-combination shot called “Pediarix” (consisting of Hep B, inactivated polio, and DTaP, which covers diphtheria, tetanus and acellular pertussis), as well as HiB (for certain bacterial infections) and Prevnar (for meningitis and blood infections). I reiterated my refusal of Hep B, accepted DTaP and HiB, and asked to put off polio and Prevnar. In response, I received a threat: Get all the vaccines or get out of our practice. “Informed consent”? Ha. This was uninformed coercion.

WeÂ’re leaving for another practice, a little bitter but wiser. The strong-arm tactics of the medical establishment mustnÂ’t intimidate parents from challenging the universal vaccine orthodoxy. When it comes to protecting our childrenÂ’s health, skepticism is the best medicine.

170 So, now that "student athletes" are considered "employees" doesn't that mean that their $75,000 per year "scholarship" is now wages? And doesn't that mean that they now have to pay taxes (All of them) on that as income? Minus Union dues of course. Let's just start calling this what this is because most of them have dreams of the NFL where the real money is and just start calling this the minor leagues. To heck with having to study to get a degree in sports communications (whatever the hell that is), wasting their and the university's time and just pay the yutes for playing in the farm clubs.

Based on the ending to After Virtue it's clear he never finished Canticle. You really need to start reading Ethika Politika more often. They just had a piece that led off with a Canticle for Leibowitz reference.

277 I find Michelle Malkin's claim that "one marijuana cracker" made her mother in law begin eating better than in three months at best dubious. What I don't understand is that if marijuana is approved as a drug for medicinal purposes, why isn't it being regulated as a drug by the FDA? Who is going to get sued the first time someone ends up with some kind of poisoning? How does one know what kind of dose of THC(the supposed magic cure all in MJ) is in any of the plants being offered by these pot shops(that MM describes as having Jerry Garcia posters, etc. She sounds more like she is standing in one of those highway porn shops, giggling away)

"Momentum" for marriage redefinition? (Gabe's terminology corrected to remove the fundamental logical flaw)  Guess I missed that - I figured almost every state that voted on the issue decided against said redefinition, incl. deeply idiotic CA (comfortably, even as the same cretins at the polls were gleefully electing disastrous corrupt alien state and federal officials).

Then there's the ridiculous lawlessness and legislation from the bench (Prop 8, AG's dereliction of duty/violation of oath, "judge"'s dereliction and absurd ruling, followed by more of same - to include the unjudicial, baseless, unhinged and bizarre rantings about bigotry - from SCOTUS).  Does Gabe mean THAT kind of "momentum"?

I am utterly indifferent to the whole question itself.  But it's not hard to understand why we're in the lawless state we are - if even supposed sane people who believe in the rule of law are fine with comically lawless chaos so long as it enforces their bigoted self-dealing preferences on society - then it's easy to see why judicial tyranny is the default setting of so many in American life.

But in keeping with standard practice around here (and because of my utter indifference to the topic in general) I didn't read the link, so maybe I'm barking up the wrong redwood here.

torquewrench, I slipped that factoid about most of the recent mass-shooters having only dope use in common into a recent conversation (where I otherwise repeated my utter indifference/ignorance on the whole marheejuwanna "debate").  As usual - blank stares in response.

Can someone put me some knowledge about this side-tidbit of the marijuana thing:  will there be/are there massive publicly funded propaganda campaigns against use of this substance - esp. by smoking - due to what I assume are the major health risks, the sort we have seen for decades against cigarettes?

Or will yet another beclowning idiocy be added to the embarrassing mess that was even recently the US, as one unhealthy drug habit is quietly implicitly embraced while another one continues to be demonized and regulated to the point of creating yet another black market?

283 Kendall was a smart kid who should have been in school. Since he saw Danny murder Baptiste for no reason that he was nice to him, you would think he would have been happy to see him gone. And after Darryl beat up Wendy, I'm not sure why Kendall was suckered into this BS. I hope Wendy does bring the US Marshals Darryl's head on a platter. And where is Dewey? He has to come back. And I think Martha will bring down the soviet spy ring, too.
