Fatal Self-Defense Shootings On The Rise In Detroit
— Open Blogger

It looks like the people of Detroit are defending themselves and their homes since they can't depend on the city's police force.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said at a press conference last week that in his 37-year career, he’s never seen as many homeowners defending themselves by shooting intruders. Craig told The News in January he felt the crime rate could be lowered if more “good Americans” were armed, because he said criminals would think twice about attacking.

“It does appear more and more Detroiters are becoming empowered,” Craig said. “More and more Detroiters are getting sick of the violence. I know of no other place where I’ve seen this number of justifiable homicides. It’s interesting that these incidents go across gender lines.”


Empowered. I like that word choice.

Remember, if the government is rolled back for whatever reason(in this case the bankruptcy of a city), the citizenry can always pick up the slack. We aren't helpless.

The entire town will be better off if the local PD is abolished, which is effectively happening right now because the insurance carrier for the department hiked their rates in order to cover them. They deserve it, too, since the entire department is a shit show where you have the chief sexually harassing women, one of the female officers doing the same, and one particular asshole going well in excess of 90 MPH outside of their jurisdiction and totalling at least two of the department's cars.

103 While I agree with the sentiment, I think it's sad that it's come to this in Detroit, at the same time. Make no mistake, should intruders ever enter my home, I will defend myself. I have a 12 gauge under the bed, and am looking for a good pistol to augment/replace it (as my primary home defense weapon) But it's also something I'd rather not have to do if at all possible. I imagine that killing another person, no matter how justified it is (and in these cases it's more than justified) doesn't leave you without some psychological bumps. But Detroit is also a city where civility has failed completely.

I was on vacation out of state with another family in Southern california and we rented a nice house near the beach.  I hear someone on the porch trying to get in.  Not having my gun, I grab a butcher knife in the kitchen and confront the man.  He's obviously wacked out, tries to come for me, but sees the knife and then gets scared and runs off into the knight.

After the incident, I called 911/police multiple times to report the incident and see if cops could aprehend the suspect, give a description, etc.  The cops never even came over despite all the calls, and never even so much as called back or followed up.

You're on your own when it comes to self-defense.  And this was in an upscale area.

Make no mistake, should intruders ever enter my home, I will defend myself. I have a 12 gauge under the bed, and am looking for a good pistol to augment/replace it (as my primary home defense weapon)

But it's also something I'd rather not have to do if at all possible.

I imagine that killing another person, no matter how justified it is (and in these cases it's more than justified) doesn't leave you without some psychological bumps.

But Detroit is also a city where civility has failed completely.

We have 10k years of societal evolution saying its good to kill the guy trying to kill you, and we have 50 years of bleeding hearts saying its wrong. The outcome is that basically you feel ok for doing it, but bad because your confused about feeling ok.

It was kinda sad seeing the first order effects of modern liberalism. The week before I arrived the city threw what I think was called the "world's largest free jazz festival" downtown. The mother, enjoying her $40K/yr, makes damn sure the kids are home studying and sleeping when they should instead of running around smokiing crack. Bottom line: Detroit spends $25K/kid/year now with less than 1 in 5 actually learning to read and do math. Vouchers spend the same and get results.

So would mine.  In effect, every parent would have their tax money directed to a school of their choice that would offer the best programs for the least amount of money.  Schools would not be segregated by districts or counties or whatever other means of separation.  If you like a particular school, you will be allowed to enroll your child there.  Conversely, if you don't like the school, you are free to pull your kid (and your money) out and find another school.

This would create a pure market driven school system where schools would compete for dollars and drive them to compete to offer the best choice to parents.

True, but your plan seems to be too linked to a traditional school model, leaving other models and homeschooling out of the loop. However the biggest problem I see with your plan is the individualization of property taxes as they follow that particular child or children. If the owner of one house worth a million pays $12K/yr in taxes and has one kid, while another with a $100K house pays $2K/year and has 4 kids (and is black), that would mean you're racist and want to bring back slavery and plantations and Mandingo style whippings (or so it would characterized).

If that is what they say, they are giving bad advice.  A 12 gauge pump is a good weapon for a man in good shape who is familiar with it and who has practiced with it.  Like a policeman.



For a woman who is marginally familiar and tends to be of smaller stature than a man, a pistol caliber carbine or a 20 gauge semi-auto is probably a better choice because once it is loaded, there is a simple point and click interface and the recoil is a whole lot less.  Actually, that is probably true for anybody who is not going to spend a couple of weekends a month at the shooting range.
