Flyin' Car?
— Ace

This story is a year old, but I missed it last time. I don't know how I came across it now.

The bad news: As you can tell from the video below, this isn't even a prototype yet. All the pictures are mock-ups, and the video is CGI. The actual plane, the Terrafugia TF-X (the X stands for "Awesome"), is ten years away.

The good news: The company has made flyin' cars before, or, actually, "roadable aircraft," which are just planes that can drive on a highway. I don't really count these as a flyin' car, because, well, they look like planes even when they're on the ground. But the company is at least putting out product.

They've also got a contract from DARPA to make a "flying Humvee" so they can't be total morons.

Better news: the proposed vehicle, in the video below, is also a roadable aircraft, but it looks a bit more like a car to me, so I'm going to count it as an odd-looking and early-model genuine flyin' car.

Even better news: It's a VTOL so you can skip the trip to the airport. The ability to take off from anywhere -- not just an airstrip -- is really a must-have for me, as far as my own flyin' car checklist. If you have to drive to an airport (or have some other convenient airstrip to take off from and land on), then what's the point of having a roadable aircraft? You can just as easily park a car at the airport and then fly your plane.

It doesn't really seem to give the driver that freedom that a real flyin' car does -- the ability to literally just pull off the road and take off into the sky on a whim. Or to land wherever he likes (within reason) by his destination and drive the rest of the way there.

The TF-X, if it is ever made, will cost probably a half a million dollars, if not more.

A Bonus Is This Something? under the fold.

Is This Something? Hey, how about a movie about one of the first superheroes ever.

If I remember right, this cartoon made him more explicitly a comic-book superhero, giving him a magic ring that transformed him from Zero to Hero.

By the way I hated that cartoon. But that theme song runs through my head on occasion.

My life is awful.

23 The Baltics part seems crazy, but I'm not gonna be shocked if Putin takes all of eastern and southern Ukraine, uniting with Transdniestria, taking Odessa, and leaving Ukraine a land-locked rump state. CNN NationalSecurity ‏@NatSecCNN U.S. intel assessement: greater likelihood Russia will enter eastern Ukraine http://wp.me/p1xuqq-6p8 The buildup is seen to be reminiscent of MoscowÂ’s military moves before it went into Chechnya and Georgia in both numbers of units and their capabilities. U.S. military and intelligence officials have briefed Congress on the assessment. As a result, Republican members of the House Armed Services Committee late Wednesday sent a classified letter to the White House expressing concern about unfolding developments. An unclassified version obtained by CNN said committee members feel “urgency and alarm, based on new information in the committeeÂ’s possession.” The committee said there was “deep apprehension that Moscow may invade eastern and southern Ukraine, pressing west to Transdniestria and also seek land grabs in the Baltics.” Transdniestria is a separatist region of Moldova.

31 Studebaker didn't make a flying car.

They made two, couple of decades apart. One's in the Air and Space Museum.

And yet, Studebaker is the punch line of a government retirement guaranty joke. It's the synonym for Old, Tired, and Out of Style. They (finally) came to the realization that there wasn't much future in making cars, and their conscious de-coupling from that business makes everybody say "they went out of business," which they didn't.

And that is my opinion of the American buying public, right there. We had them, you didn't want them, and now you want to know where they are. As Christ said, suffer the little bitches.

In other words, all the countries who had the decency to not expel or ethnically cleanse their Russian populations after the Soviet collapse are going to lose territory. And most of those Russians were moved in after the original inhabitants were forcibly relocated, or in the case of Ukraine, murdered in a monstrous act of genocide, so Russia can take their bullshit propaganda about protecting ethnic Russians from imaginary Nazi boogeymen and shove it up their ass.

105 From the Wiki:

The theme music is credited to Winston Sharples (as Win Sharples) who spent more than two decades at Paramount Pictures composing background music for the "Superman" and "Popeye" theatrical cartoons produced by the Fliescher brothers. However, the transformative "ring anthem" frequently used as Hercules slips on the ring given him by Zeus, along with several bridges of music used throughout episodes, are taken from the 1954 film The Black Shield of Falworth, the music credited to Joseph Gershenson but really composed by Hans Salter, Herman Stein and Frank Skinner, the long time in-house film composer for Universal Studios.

Posted by: tsrblke, PhD(c) (No Really!) at March 26, 2014 07:42 PM (HDwDg) You meant in the "theology" section. So much for "gender is a social construct," huh? There are no "interest" considerations when it comes to a fetus. I once took a final in Canon Law that asked, "Adam and Steve are freshman at the University of Massachusetts. One evening after a long day of drinking at their frat, they decided it would be fun to go get married. They went to the courthouse and got married. The next day a friend reminded them of what they had done, and they went to you, their priest, for advice on how to right the wrong. What is your advice?" Most of my peers wrote for like 45 minutes on that question citing the catechism and multiple coda of Canon Law, and a couple even parsing Latin in the origin St. Raymond of Penafort's Canon. Mine was something like, "It wasn't a marriage by definition, so you tell them to limit their alcohol intake and send them on their way." Who got the only "A" in the class? THIS GUY. Sometimes, theology is THAT simple.

So strike one. Then after the paper I raised my hand and said "you suggested that pharmacological therapy is "violence" but completely ignore the possible psychological harm through confusion that comes from telling a kid they have "no gender" care to explain why?" I got by "mumble, you're just not understanding...mumble." Again, 1st place . I'd say I want out of the field, but I don't know where to go. So maybe that's not what I want. I dunno. 228 And Leland Yee was leading the charge against violent video games. My theory is that liberals have done so much to annihilate the family unit (a death through 1000 pieces of legislation since the 60s) that censoring violent/racist/sexually explicit content in music, movies and videogames is the only way to showcase their "family values" to the LIVs. Of course the methods they use are close to their own hearts: state coercion and censorship. Bunch of Stalinists.

238 222 They decided it was more fun to beat off than to have sex with hot Japanese chicks. I've heard that Japanese pr0n features chicks who cry during secks. Maybe that put them off?" In all seriousness it is hard for Japanese men to start families when they are working 90 hours a week with no overtime. Once you are hired, your ass belongs to the company. This has created massive demographic problems and retarded their economic growth for the past two decades. They've basically been in a perpetual recession for 20 years. This is why I don't worry about China. Look at Japan's demographic problems created by societal expectations and then multiply that by 100X for China. In 30 years China is fucked when they realize they've birth controlled or aborted away 400 million workers through state policy. Their economy will implode and there's nothing they can do about.

Posted by: boulder toilet hobo at March 26, 2014 07:58 PM (30eLQ) You cannot drive up the coast. No roads. A few miles past Powell River, the highway ends, and you can't reach Powell River without taking two ferries. The coast is very rugged, with deep-water fjords that runs dozens of miles inland. There is a "marine highway" that runs from Seattle to Alaska, IIRC. That might be the easiest way to go, but the Alcan Highway is all paved now, and has some awesome scenery, so there's that. Oh, and flying cars? Fuggedaboudit. Do you honestly think any regulatory agency would allow you to simply zoom off into the sky from a freeway clogged after some illegal alien spilled his unsecured load of cantaloupes? No way. It hatwould be unsafe for all concerned, and might cause rubberneckers to have more wrecks. And just how ready are you to trust your life to engine power alone. That VTOL job is hanging on its propellers until it gets high enough to transition into forward flight, at which point its stubby little wings become "somewhat" useful. One engine dies, and you drop like a million-dollar rock, splat! The inherent weakness of roadable airplanes, and there have been a few, is that they are neither a very good car, nor a very good airplane, and cost more than a good car and a good airplane together.
