Gaming Thread 2/16/2014
— Gang of Gaming Morons!

This is another short week as I forgot to write something up as I've been on a binge watching the Olympics so here I am, trying to whip something up in a half hour. Walls of text will resume post Winter Olympics (the only Olympics I really care about).

NEWS

NIS showed off some of their upcoming releases for the year. Frankly though, there is only two games worth noting. Disgaea 4 is coming to the Vita and Danganronpa 2 is coming out in the fall.

After a couple of their patented delays, JAST finally has a solid release date for their western release of the PC version of Stens;Gate. I take no responsibility of what you see if you start clicking around their site.

• Nintendo during their direct showed off some games:

Monolith Soft's upcoming X

New trailer for the upcoming Mario Kart 8 (out on May 30th)

Platinum finally showing off Bayonetta 2

Little Mac finally getting in on some Super Smash Buttons action

You didn't think Nintendo would be dropping easy cash did you? In SHOCKING news, Nintendo knows how to milk old stuff with a release of NES Remix 2

A year late but Mario Golf World Tour is coming. And it has some semblance to the awesome Mario Golf Advance Tour

*****************************************************

Stuff I'm playing

With Microsoft disabling the sharpening filter from the Xbox One, I've been playing more Ass Creed 4.

Also have been playing Hawken which I haven't played since alpha. The grind is still pretty bad when it comes to unlocking stuff but the game is in much better shape. Worth the download (it's free) if you want a mech game that doesn't really feel like a mech game.

Nintendo finally released a Inazuma Eleven, Level 5's Soccer RPG, game here in the US. It's the 3DS remake they did and it's very much worth the $20. That being said, the remake cart collected the three DS games and if Nintendo releases the second and third game, they would be jacking the US out of an extra $20 to get all three games. I do expect them to come with the World Cup coming up but man.....

And then of course there is Threes which I'm still addicted to.

NEW RELEASES

NASCAR 14 (PS3, 360) - Not gonna lie, haven't played a NASCAR specific game in over 10 years when Papyrus was releasing some good stuff on the PC. And frankly nowadays, if you have a wheel and PC, your best bet is to finally jump onto the iRacing train if you haven't already. They currently are having a 50% off promotion. Don't get me wrong, the game can get pricey as it's a priced as there is a monthly fee (if you're dumb and not pay attention to their deals over the year) and with car and track purchases ($12 a car and $12-15 for tracks) but it's well worth it in the long run. Coincidental enough, most of the people from Papyrus who made those awesome NASCAR games are behind iRacing.

Earth Defense Force 2025 (PS3,360) - Do you like chaos and mayhem? Do you like watching the FPS drop to single digits? Do you like fun? If so, then this is the game for you. It's a new entry in the crazy throw every giant insect at you till the console chugs hard series. And thankfully, this is made by original people, Sandlot instead of Vicious Cycle who did the awful Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon.

Strider (PS3, PS4, 360, XBO and Windows) - Last game from Double Helix as a freelance company (Amazon bought them) is this Strider update. Microsoft doing what it does best and accidentally had this game already up on the Xbox One marketplace for a few hours for free and the early reports is that this game is really good. Ask me last year if Double Helix could make one good game, let alone 2 back to back and I would have laughed at you but apparently they've done it.

Monster Monpiece (Vita) - Get your perv on in this TCG where you jerk off your Vita so the girls strip and level up. Game is supposed to be pretty good but if you look at the card art, you quickly understand why this isn't getting a physical release here and going the digital route. WTB new Culdcept

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) - On one hand, think this is a waste of Retro's talent but on the other, this could be interesting. And thank God Nintendo pushed this back as the Wii U release schedule is frigging awful as there is only four games of note coming out till Mario Kart 8 (Pier Solar HD, Shovel Knight, NES Remix 2 and Child of Light).

I would also mention that MangaGamer is finally giving the visual novel, Ultimate Boob Wars: Big Chests vs Flat Chests an official western release. Mainly mention it to link to Jim Sterling's review of it

That's it, I'm done

1 Fans of the Deception series will be pleased to know that Deception IV: Blood Ties has been scheduled for US release on the PS3 and Vita on March 25.

2 I'm not against more pervy stuff in video games or anything, but the thing that bugs me about games like that Monster Monpiece is that I get most of my Vita gaming time in on the bus to and from work. I don't want to engage in that sort of gamelplay when I'm sitting next to an old lady on the bus.

7 since the NDAs are up. TESO is trash with bad gameplay for an MMO in tiny areas. TitanFall isn't the prettiest game but it's a hell of a lot of fun. TitanFall's "beta" should be open now for Origin and Xbox One, no codes needed

Posted by: The Dude at February 16, 2014 12:46 PM (bStrg)

8 I'm supposed to not be spending money on games at the moment (paying off debt and all that) but EDF2025 and Strider will make me break that promise.

I've been looking forward to X on the WiiU since e3 last year. I hope its still 2014 as this was one reason I decided to go for the system with the price drop last year. I've not played Bayonetta 1 though to know how excited I should be for 2 at this point. Too bad Strider isn't coming to U, I'll just grab that on PC instead.

Link in my sig is a post about some of the new stuff shown off in Japan on Fri/Sat. If money was no object, I would gladly import a Steel Chronicle Ganesh, which is essentially an arcade version of EDF2025. Of course I'd also import Border Break and the new Silent Scope Bone Eater.

9 Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler at February 16, 2014 04:45 PM (/96QU) Pretty well. Took my CHL course last week. Now I have to figure out what sort of gun to get. Thinking of a .380 Bersa at the moment but am hearing that 9mm is more affordable ammo.

10 Blizzard has started open bets of Hearthstone but I just don't see strategic card games as anywhere close to my skill set. I'm a little surprised Son doesn't want to try it either, but he said he wasn't interested at all.

13 I don't think I'm violating NDAs by saying what TESO gets wrong is mainly (bugs aside) what other MMOs get wrong. I would not say it is trash or a bad game - it just doesn't stand out in a crowded market. And that fact alone is like sandpaper to the face to Elder Scrolls fans. I think the MMO genre's tropes are established enough that even deviating in a small way will do more market harm than good, and that's a shame, because a lot of them suck. I hate MMOs but I play a few because the not-on-rails single-player genre is largely moribund (because they're harder to make and harder to profit from).

14 I got another email from Blizzard for the Hearthstone open beta, so I'll probably give it a try. My husband's been playing it for weeks, now, and he seems addicted. Guess I should see what all the fuss is about. I just cringe at the murloc soundfx though.

19 15 That is what I had hoped for in a Fallout MMO. I always wanted an MMO that would be along the lines of a Fallout or Elder scrolls single player game from Bethesda- just playing with other people. One where exploration was key.

21 Hey fellow gamers. Finally beat AC3. I see now why people were underwhelmed in some respects. Gameplay was a bit repetitive, and while I actually had some fun with the present day sidequests in the Ezio trilogy, they just sorta phoned that in on this one complete with Mass Effect style ending .

26 20 Heh. Too bad I have played both Fallout:NV and Skyrim to the point of boredom. TBH, I always liked the Fallout setting for the exploration element. In Skyrim when you are exploring, you might run across a new tomb, but with Fallout you might run across a small story about some survivors of the nuclear blast. The game always felt more... full of stuff to see in Fallout (3 and NV.)

Posted by: Aetius451AD at February 16, 2014 01:25 PM (TGgNi)

27 though seriously, check that iRacing membership deal out. $50 for a year or $90 for 2 years are really good deals. If you're into racing, it's one of the best deals around with their support on racing leagues and it's the best when it comes to simracing

Posted by: The Dude at February 16, 2014 01:29 PM (bStrg)

28 Also, just played Max Payne 3 (I know late to the party, but loved MP 1&2.) It is strange, but I think the problem I have with it is that while it has all of the check boxes for a Max Payne game (Dark, treachery filled plot, the gravely tones of Max, lots of gun play, bullet time) it does not FEEL like a Max Payne game. Max Payne is one of those stories where setting and imagery is almost as important as the story line. With MP 3 it feels like they came up with a story, then dropped Max Payne into it.

Heh. I watched Russia vs Switzerland curling the other night. Then, when I was watching USA vs Sweden yesterday (I think; time all runs together on a holiday weekend), I kept hearing the one Russian wench yelling свип!! on the other side of the stadium. She's quite loud.

33 There's a lot of additional material, story, characters, etc., that can be added to Skyrim. When it cam out I couldn't keep it running vanilla, but now it's stable with about 130 mods, after thousands of bugs have been fixed. I go do other things, but it will be a while before I'm truly *bored* of Skyrim - because extensible. Still hate Bethesda's lazy asses, mind you.

Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith[/i] [/b] [/s] [/u] at February 16, 2014 01:45 PM (qyfb5)

34 33 I put an insane number of hours in Skyrim and modded the hell out of it. Not saying I am completely done with it, just burned out a bit and taking a break. Here is a question though: what was truly revolutionary about Skyrim? The graphics were pretty, but so were Oblivion and Morrowwind at the time. The skill system was done better but more an evolution of a theme. I love the skill system, wish they could introduce a form of it in the Fallout universe. Other than those two things, I just think Skyrim hit at the right time.

36 Polliwog, I recommend watching a couple of good youtuber commentator's take on a play session. I got hooked on TotalBiscuit's "Lord of the Arena" series. They're short, he babbles about what he's doing, and he's got good tempo. The games are pretty fun and I like how there's no backtalk/smack talking. it's just like five emotes and you can squelch even that by right clicking. Most are quite polite - it's rather nice.

40 #34, I think the first thing that put Skyrim apart was the musical score. It was better fleshed out, had layers of callbacks, and just fit the game "feel". It was also at that point of immersion - a reactive wilderness that just had the right set of scale. The surroundings weren't as "clean" as in Oblivion - it gave it a raw feel as well. Combat felt satisfying. The surroundings were very pretty. But all in all, the music kicked it over the edge. The MMO has some of the music. Graphics are nice, Combat feels lame. Not fun.

46 Kinda surprised that D4 is making it to Vita this fall - with the usual delay pattern between console and handheld releases in the series, I was expecting it to come out this time next year. Then again, maybe that's just the Japanese release and we get it in February 2015?

Posted by: Inspector Cussword at February 16, 2014 06:40 PM (FApZx) They had the opportunity to make oblivion so cool. In the lore from Morrowind, Cyrodil is supposedly a green jungle with a massive imperial city not the one with 2 people per district and the generic fantasy landscape that we got. Not to mention the horrible game breaking bugs that the lazy and incompetent coders at Bethesda allowed to remain in the game. I have not been able to use any of the larger mods with any of their games without having horrible crashing all the time on any of my systems. So naturally, I am still very excited for Open Morrowind with their new engine to run Morrowind with. (Hopefully one day also Oblivion and Skyrim too).

I'm really bad at video games, but that one is pretty fun. I probably spent an hour just doing the triathlon thingy. Also went through a bunch of wine, and just like a real tri, my performance decreased in direct proportion to my alcohol consumption. Still a fun way to spend an evening.

63 @40 I think the first thing that put Skyrim apart was the musical score. It was better fleshed out, had layers of callbacks, and just fit the game "feel". ----------------- Skyrim had good music, but Morrowind's main theme is still one of my all time favorites. And the low key start to the game is something that you don't see often enough. There's not even a starter dungeon. You're simply dropped off at a dock, given basic instructions on how the game works, and told that you might want to go visit a particular guy. There's no emperor. There's no dragon. No one's trying to kill you right at the start. You're just a freed prisoner in an alien land. Skyrim's a solid game. But as someone else noted earlier, there's nothing particularly ground-breaking about it. I'm disappointed to hear about the MMO. But I'm not really surprised. I've been suspecting that it would end up like this ever since I first heard about it.

69 Morrowind was brilliant in many ways, but I find I can't go that far back in gameplay. It's just too painful. Spent many hours doing the graphics and other updates and mods to get it all prettier and fix some bugs and update some dialogue... and the gameplay just killed me. It was awful. Now I remember why I cheated like a freak on the first one - mostly to travel beyond a snail's pace. I would like to see either a truly new engine (I think the fan effort sounds so far like it will be *too* faithful), or SkyWind or something like that, preferably with some of the fan-implemented updates and favorite mods. Using the (largely) bugfixed Skyrim engine, as a player, is now much less of a chore - mind you some 20+ of those 130 mods are just bugfixes, and fix well over a thousand bugs. Even so, there are still quest and interface flaws, just not as bad as in the beginning. It wasn't revolutionary, BTW, just vastly evolved. I would actually like, while I'm wishing, to see Daggerfall, Redguard, Morrowind, and Oblivion in the new engine. Or, even better, a newer, lighter, properly finished engine. While I'm wishing. Then maybe the Ultimas. And Maybe some adventure games, LucasArts and Infocom. In a full 3D engine. Actually now that I think of it, Monkey Island 4 was a little creepy with some of those characters translated to 3D. But the Telltale ones not so much, so it's okay.

70 Skyrim had good music, but Morrowind's main theme is still one of my all time favorites.

I like when you go to Solstheim in the Skyrim and they play the Morrowind music, and you see the Redoran dudes walking around in the bonemold armor. That was a nice touch, it made me realize how much I missed playing Morrowind.

72 I'm interested in checking out Hawken, but also interested in getting good grades this semester. I sort of agree on Skyrim, but in my experience it just put everything together so well that the experience was something groundbreaking. You can't point to any single aspect, but the thing as a whole is pretty fantastic perhaps like Pandora from Avatar.

73 Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at February 16, 2014 08:29 PM (qyfb5) That's why I like the effort of the OpenMW team. Already they have incorporated almost all of the modifications that the Morrowind Graphics Enhanced team did with their exe injection. They have gotten to the point where most texture mods work and better than they did in Morrowind. When they reach 1.0 in the next few months (1:1 combatibility with the original Morrowind) they can start to add features from the other games. I hope they can get Skyrim style combat or similar added into it.

74 OK, this isn't new to gamers, but it was new to me. This is the best Valentine's Day song of all time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6ljFaKRTrI

75 The biggest thing about the skyrim combat I noted was that it introduced the finishing moves and added a bit more to the type of melee attacks you could do. The finishing moves are kind of odd when you think about it. It is a small thing (coming after you have beat the guy down) but they seem to add a TON of enjoyment and flavor to the game. A nice innovation (from whatever game originally innovated them.)

76 Namco's Breakdown still has the best hand to hand combat in all of gaming

I hope OpenMW also goes the modular way, I guess we will first have to wait and see if either of them is ever finished - oh the vast mass grave of unfinished game projects.

Yeah those are great.  The ones using the bow are pretty cool too. The camera just follows the arrow to the target.

79 My PS4 yearns to play a game! Can't remember a console launch in recent memory with this kind of drought. All I have been doing is playing Pinball Arcade (which rocks!) and watching Amazon Instant. I need next-gen content!

80 OK. I will now prepurchase this game. I love this tongue and cheek stuff. Totally going to play the Jew class. Posted by: NWConservative at February 16, 2014 08:09 PM (ymdUc) When I saw the Jew class I was sold too, glad they did not tone it down. Here another video of the gameplay. http://youtu.be/wR3kK6So4DY

81 I'm waiting for that game Destiny to be released. Its done by the same dudes who did the HALO games. It looks pretty frigging epic.

They really only have a few things left to finish before being feature complete and then it is performance improvement time. They will be done this year though (it has been a four year process).

84 Look forward to one of these rebuild-morrowind-with-a-modern-engine to be completed. Have tried to replay the original which I had played to death and the character models are just too ugly and gameplay is lame. The missions, character-building, exploration, music and story are great though. That Southpark game could be a winner, funny stuff. Also I think Thief comes out in 10 days, a definite buy for me.
