Going to the Dogs Open Thread - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

Here's a time killer until the NFL thread goes up.

This fella has much too much time on his hands.

While were shooting the breeze here, take a look at this photo. It seems this baby doesn't much care for Miss Mccarthy. Who can blame him?

15 Best work Jenny McCarthy ever did was the movie, Baseketball.

She is apparently unfamiliar with  the  phrase "suck the chrome off a  trailer hitch,"  and proceeds to do so.

Well, you don't  see it, just the  silver on her lips afterwards.  Now that I think about it, nothing she's done (after posing nude for Playboy)  has been worth  seeing.

47 Jackstraw, thanks for the link to the R platform. I must have read some earlier iteration. So, at best we are stuck with O-care until January 2017, according to the platform. This will not work as it's too late, so that issue doesn't matter. O-care will have to fail on it's own. If it survives until 2017, it will never go away. As for the rest of the platform, I see too much "government can" for me. But I'll compromise. I'll vote for most any Republicans in my races who aren't incumbents. The plank about marriage is funny as it's much too late for that one already. Same applies to any talk about financial sanity, as R's have long demonstrated they have no interest in that. Time for a longer term view. I understand the establishment view, I held it and argued for it for many years.

I suspect it's a matter of perspective.  I have not ever  seen an exotic dancer in person (no, really), so I'm sure there are some subtleties of work that I have not examined.

However, I would argue any woman who is  old  enough to start showing some signs of chestal  downward  drift is NOT bettered by the scientific lifting of  God's work.

She should let gravity and nature take its course.  And I have  seen my share of women for whom that is the case, and NONE  of them would have been improved by doing otherwise.

68 Apparently the article going around saying that Jenny McCarthy's son doesn't have autism isn't true, and she still says that he does. I have mixed feelings about her. On one hand, obviously she's done a huge disservice to society by advocating that children not be vaccinated. It's not an exaggeration to say that people will die from her ignorance. But on the other hand, the autism world is full to the brim wtih a million people telling you a million different things. "IF you just do xyz, your kid can be normal!" " You didn't do x? Well, his continued autism is your fault!" "This group is evil, no this group is evil." "This therapy is child abuse." " no it's a miracle!" All the while you're dealing with a child, or children, who is 8 but has the emotional maturity and self control of a 2 year old. Yeah, it's stressful, and I can see how a parent would latch on to anything that gives them hope of a cure, or at the very least, and explanation for why.

75 Here's Jenny McCarthy's response: "“Stories circulating online, claiming that I said my son Evan may not have autism after all, are blatantly inaccurate and completely ridiculous. Evan was diagnosed with autism by the Autism Evaluation Clinic at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital and was confirmed by the State of California (through their Regional Center). The implication that I have changed my position, that my child was not initially diagnosed with autism (and instead may suffer from Landau-Kleffner Syndrome), is both irresponsible and inaccurate. These stories cite a “new” Time Magazine interview with me, which was actually published in 2010, that never contained any such statements by me. Continued misrepresentations, such as these, only serve to open wounds of the many families who are courageously dealing with this disorder. Please know that I am taking every legal measure necessary to set this straight."

78 A couple of days ago, I fired off a polite email to the President of John Jay College concerning the screed written by their faculty member that was the subject of a post here at the HQ. I confined myself just to the subject of her attempt at justifying the murders committed by Christopher Dorner because of his claim that he had been driven to killing due to white racism. Further, their faculty member was hinting that she supported the murders as a slave rebellion. She also explicitly said that his allegations of racism were being ignored. I wrote that Dorner's claims were self-serving and contradicted by the fact that 2 of his 3 victims weren't even white police officers but an Asian woman and a black man. I informed them that their faculty member's behavior obviously created a hostile environment for white students. I just received a reply from some minor functionary at the college saying that the college supported "academic freedom" and some similar blather. I asked if she would be still so supportive of a faculty member's racist rantings if the faculty member was white and the objects of his hatred were black. I doubt I will get a reply to that.

DSM 5   is drastically changing the definitions  of the terms, and I  haven't looked into it much because  it kinda doesn't really matter what you call it.

If you are a parent of a child with behavioral problems, the truth remains, some of it is likely caused by something medical/genetic, and some of it  is caused by the parents.

Sorry, that's just the truth.  If you love  your children, and want what  is best for them, you MUST do a hard examination of your behavior, regardless of whether your children  have some kind of anomaly or not.  If you can't or won't examine your actions, all the time, every day, you're probably doing something that is causing more problems  for your children that they would not have otherwise.

That's  all there is to it.

And with that, I'm out.  Much to do before  (and during)  football.  Have a nice day, people.

83 Jenny McCarthy never quite did it for me. This one, a sad case in the end, was much more to my liking: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jennifer_Lyn_Jackson

But let's consider this idiot instead:

" Next, imagine alerts rapidly streaming across your monitor. Big headline flashing: “Earth’s rate of global warming is 400,000 Hiroshima bombs a day.” Suddenly, fade to black. An eerie silence. You wonder: Is this our new reality? We’re in the dark.

Facts really are stranger than fiction. No matter what new broadcast technologies deliver our news — TV, LinkedIn, Hulu, Google Glass, “Star Trek” mind melding, Kurzweil’s “Singularity”— the fact is this: Global warming is running at a rate of 400,000 A-bombs hitting Planet Earth daily, dangerously overheating our world, day after day after day.

Big Oil is fighting to keep that info off Big TV News. But the fact remains that the 400,000-daily-A-bombs headline is real. It was first posted on ThinkProgress.com and voiced by one of the world’s leading climate scientists, James Hansen, the head of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies from 1981 to 2013, in a 2012 TED Talk . But since Big Money rules today’s reality, even if the conspiracy loses a round, its perpetrators will invest heavily a comeback. They can’t afford to lose the “War of the Worlds.” "

99 Some R policies I'd like to see. Declaration of an energy emergency. End all special fuel blend and ethanol use. Repeal the latest CAFE standards. Open offshore and federal land for exploration and production as well as approve the KN pipeline. End all federal subsidies of so-called renewable or green energy. Shut down the EPA and let the states handle it. (EPA, who started that?) Declaration of a financial emergency and a cutting of govt spending by the amount required to avoid a financial collapse. (Latest estimate I've seen is 4.5% across the board, actual cuts, not the BS declines in spending increases. (If this is not done, the rest takes care of itself, we are going down hard.) Defense exempted from cuts that would negatively impact national security. Increase the cuts in all other areas as needed. Pass a simplified tax reform plan with no more than 3 federal tax rate tiers and expand the system to where the top 85% pay some federal taxes. Cut the capital gains rate to 10% and watch the money roll in. Cut corporate taxes to zero over the next 5 years. Those will do for starters. The GOPe won't be on board with most of the above, and not at all on board re the spending problem. There's not a single socon moment in there. I'll waive all that for now. (There is a revenue componet to the debt problem. The place to look is expanding the tax base and unleasing the American business machine to produce more jobs and more revenue.) Apologies, I will now shut up.

106 "If you are a parent of a child with behavioral problems, the truth remains, some of it is likely caused by something medical/genetic, and some of it is caused by the parents." I will try not to respond with anger because it is obvious that this statement comes from ignorance and not malice. There is nothing in the world that a parent can do or not do to cause autism. It's not just a "behavior problem." Trust me, if there were any parenting technique that could make my 8 year old stop banging his head at night, we would do it. But we have tried *everything*. Have a solution? It's been tried. Trust me. In our son's case, he was born 10 weeks early after my water broke at 23 weeks. He weighed 2lbs 4oz. Apparently, as an added kicker, even if he hadn't been born early he likely has a genetic disorder that causes in addition to growth issues and problems processing growth hormones, wait for it, autism like symptoms. He learned to talk by literally repeating, word for word, conversations that he had heard on tv. Word. For. Word. He adapted them to fit a given circumstance, which is actually completely brilliant. Shockingly brilliant. Which he is. He taught himself to read before he was 3. And yet he flaps his hands when he gets excited and can not, for the life of him, not get upset when someone disagrees with his logic. ANd trust me, he gets punished. He gets disciplined. He has structure. How do we know that it's not just because we are crappy parents? Because we have 3 other kids who are constantly complimented on their good behavior. Actually, so is he. We've pushed and pushed and pushed to make sure that he controls himself as much as is possible, but we don't fool ourselves into thinking that it's not a battle. He comes home and rocks and hums in his bed because the self control and stimulation has been too much for him to handle and he has to regulate himself or he'll explode. So, yeah, thanks but no thanks for the advice that he'd be normal if we just tried harder.

WUWT:
"To convert HansenÂ’s figures to a per-square-metre value, the global surface area is 5.11e+14 square metres Â… which means that Hansens dreaded 400,000 Hiroshima bombs per day works out to 0.6 watts per square metre Â… in other words, Hansen wants us to be very afraid because of a claimed imbalance of six tenths of a watt per square metre in a system where the downwelling radiation is half a kilowatt per square metre Â… we cannot even measure the radiation to that kind of accuracy.

...

"As Dr. Judith Curry points out, the paper An update on Earth’s energy balance in light of the latest global observations by Stephens et al. says this about down-welling long wave infrared radiation (what CO2 affects) and that 0.6 watts of imbalance on the surface that Hansen claims: ... That’s an uncertainty of 17 watts, or if you prefer Hansen-Cook parlance, 4 Hiroshima Atomic bombs an uncertainty of ±113 Hiroshima bombs every second.

The ±17 watts uncertainty of the 0.6 watt surface imbalance is two orders of magnitude larger than the claim! But, activists like Cook say global warming will “Cook’ us for sure.

...

"How about comparing Hiroshima bombs to the biggest fusion bomb in the solar system, the sun? From our article:

The Hiroshima bomb released ~ 67 TeraJoules (TJ) = 6E13J.

    The earths circular area is 3 * (6E6m)^2 = 1E14m2.

The suns TSI is ~ 1kW = 1E3 J/s, so the earth gets ca 1E17 J/s on the sunlit side, so the sun explodes about 1E17/6E13 = 1E3 Hiroshima atomic bombs on this planet EVERY SECOND."

When I came in from shoveling the global warming that fell on my property yesterday and took my gloves off, my hands were numb at first. Then they felt like they were on fire.
That's a symptom of heatstroke, right?  Posted by: rickl

No, I've had heatstroke.  From what I remember you have no appetite and run a fever.  I've also had frostbite (hey, I was a farmer, young one at that).  You either had mild frostbite or were headed towards it, not sure where they draw the line.

154 Frostbite as un-fun as heatstroke, but more localized. Collected a frost-bitten left ear while in the service. It still hurts when it gets cold.

156 Since the Beatles and the Everlys (RIP Phil) were both cited in this thread it should be pointed out that the Everlys were a huge influence on the Beatles (and many other 60s rock/pop groups) for their vocal sound.

157 But MAx, rolling Aspergers into the broader ASD diagnosis didn't invalidate the diagnosis of those who had previously been diagnosed with Aspergers. Just the opposite, in fact. It solidified them within the Autism framework. My son's technical diagnosis is Hyperlexia which is even more nebulous. Basically its "Oh, he's autistic...and also can read! Great." I'm sure there are those out there who would say "well that's just a fake diagnosis!" but again, spend 30 seconds with him and you'll realize that he is clearly not a typical 8 year old. And not because he's acting badly either. It's little things like his inability to modulate the tone of his voice during a conversation, or just have a two way conversation in general...Like I said, I hope you like Transformers, because he has 237 episodes memorized and categorized and you just said that you like Bumblebee so hold on to your hat.

I once had frostbite so badly that that burning sensation (especially in my feet) lasted for hours. I was 17, stood in subzero weather with a friend waiting for a bus (which was way late, and we were too stupid to just go home) and the burning started when we were in a movie theater. I have no memory of what movie we were so determined to see, but I vividly remember being in absolute agony in that theater. And ever since then it doesn't take at all long for my extremities to freeze - which is why to hell with fashion, it's clunky fleece lined boots and two pairs of mittens when I go outside.

And why I refused playoff tickets to the 49ers-GB game tomorrow. If it was going to be oh, a balmy 30 degrees out, it would be a different matter.

162 FenelonSpoke, yep, it's funny that parents were concerned that removing Aspergers as a diagnostic code would result in having their kids' disorder no longer recognized at all, yet we were all assured that it would never happen and that our kids would get more help and be better served if they were justs put on the Autism Spectrum in general. Of course, we now see that dismissing the kids' disorder is exactly what's happening. Who could have predicted that..except for every Aspie parent everywhere?

rickl: The WSJ website has attracted increasing numbers of left wing trolls in the past year - they descend on the site like flying monkeys sent over from Media Matters. Some of them are very disruptive and very good at hijacking threads and the WSJ moderators do nothing - which has led subscribers to say "I'm outta here."

Left-wing media sites are much better at patroling their boards.

166 It is shocking ain't it Rickl.  Some people are really sick.

I sat as a juror on a child abuse case.  The mutt was convicted of sexually abusing his nephew.  All of us jurors and alternates were thanked by the judge after the verdict and then he dropped a real bombshell.  He said if we had not convicted him they were going to charge him with sexual abuse of the family dog.

167 Yes, very true. Lauren. Your son knows all about Transformers. My son has long conversations with me about theology. and deism and philosphy and mention some philosphers I don't know The best was a couple of weeks ago when I was supposed to volunteer on a prayer line. I had forgotten that I was supposed to do that-it was at night, I'm groggy and I'm trying to call the phone line to tell them I was available and he's asking me (because he couldn't sleep) "Could God make a being greater than himself.? Uhhh....I can't talk about that now, son. You really need a sense of humor to care for a, Aspie.

169 Haha, FenelonSpoke, I am often very amused by my son's conception of God. Because he is so literal, his insights (although sometimes based on confused or faulty premises because he is so young) are often quite extraordinary. I can only imagine what it will be like to have conversations with him as he gets older and learns more. Of course, the literalism has its downside too. He is very, very impressionable to the sort of brainwashing they put in..well everything. "Nooo mom, we have to recycle or the planet will get destroyed, you can't throw away that water bottle!' That led to a long conversation about propaganda...and so now he questions everything he is told. 'Is this true, or propaganda?' Perhaps not such a bad thing...

170 Donna V, I never comment on WSJ website because they use your full name. I have read some comments & thought they were just some, I didn't realize there are so many. FNC & BB websites have more lefties that I expected. I won't comment on either of those sites.

158 So do I.  And???

If you know Aspie's then you know that many times Aspies come here and get chewed up by the hive.  Picking on people who obviously have issues.  Disgusting to watch, but all they do is high-five each other for their "victory over the other"

174 @136 Remember McCain tried to hand the next generation Air Force tanker to EADS. The Marines wanted to buy a Eurocopter for Presidential lift, and I think the Army wanted a Eurocopter as a scout Helicopter. Also, I've read that some of the F-35 suppliers are using Chinese parts...Our idiot politicians have no qualms with sending our DoD dollars overseas to foreigners even while this will hamstring us in any future major conflict. They are stupid beyond belief...

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at January 04, 2014 01:37 PM (BC6cY)

177 Nozzle have not started to do research on this.  But there is another USAF program you left off the list.  It was for a short production run turbo-prop COIN aircraft to sell to Afghanistan.  USAF gave the contract to Embraer for their Tucano but the US builder of the T-6 Texan II who had pitched an AT-6 version filed a protest.  And there it all stalled.

And Turkish Aerospace Industries [TAI], who builds F-16s for the Turkish air force, is also a sub-contractor for the F-35.  So is Italy and Israel.

The VH-70 program got cancelled after massive overruns.

179 Also, I have to say: having Asperger's isn't an excuse for being rude, especially in a purely text interaction on line. Good at structure and processes? Then you can follow the rules of good manners and behave yourself. There's way too many assholes who have self-diagnosed as having Asperger's so they can use it as an all-purpose excuse for being assholes.

Posted by: Donna V. I found the same thing Donna. After my frostbite the tips of my fingers were much more sensitive to the cold. Tho so 30 yrs later it seems to have lessened. I think it was that time that I passed out from the cold. Came in and started to remove coverings when I felt dizzy. Started to kneel down when I passed out momentarily, waking up right away when my head hit the floor. Was told it was something to do w/ the circulatory system, going from extreme cold to warmth. Stopped plowing the lane myself in an open tractor when it was that cold and hired it done.
