GOP Amnesty Gimmicks. "Establishment" vs. "Tea Party" In Nebraska. Another Reason To Like Richard Sherman.
— DrewM

All the news is kind of frozen today (east cost bias) so some crumbs.

1. The Number 3 House Republican Has A Lousy Idea About Amnesty. Naturally, It's The Worst Possible Option

GOP Whip Keven McCarthy is now on board with a "split the baby" idea for amnesty...legalization but no path to citizenship.

"The principles aren't written yet, but in my personal belief I think it'll go with legal status that will allow you to work and pay taxes," McCarthy said.

McCarthy made clear that he did not favor carving out a new path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million people in the country illegally. But his position appears to comport with the views of other senior Republicans who have called for illegal immigrants to have access to the existing route to citizenship once they receive an initial legal status and fulfill other requirements.

The reason this is the worst option is it makes almost no one happy and just annoys everyone more.

There are studies that show that plenty of illegal immigrants don't care about citizenship. They just the chance to work here legally. On the other hand are activists (including Democrat politicians who want more voters) who will settle for nothing less.

As a practical matter giving people here illegally legal status still ignores the law as written and advantages them over people who have gone through the legal process and had to wait their turn.

It also is just uncomfortable. America has been about the chance to come here and become an American. Having a permanent segment of the population foreclosed from that part of our tradition seems wrong on an instinctual level. It's too much like what you see in places like the Mideast where foreign workers are imported but are foreclosed from ever becoming part of the country where they spend their lives.

I know that sounds contradictory since that's the system we have now (and it would no doubt work differently here than in a place like Saudi Arabia) but somehow codifying it represents turning away from a basic American value.

Politically, it's untenable because no matter what they say now, if you agree to legalization today, liberals will pocket that and comeback tomorrow demanding you give these same people citizenship or risk turning America into an apartheid state (you know that's exactly what they'll say".

And so the GOP will have angered their supporters by putting illegals at the front of the line, have handed the Democrats a partial victory and a club to keep using on the GOP.

If you stand in the middle of the road you'll only get hit by traffic going in both directions. The GOP never seems to learn this basic lesson.

2. Is The "Establishment" Supporting A Candidate In Nebraska Simply Out Of Spite?

Last week's podcast guest, Tim Carney, takes a look at the GOP primary fight for the Senate in Nebraska and finds an interesting divide.

Both candidates seem pretty conservative at first blush but one, Ben Sasse, is backed by the dreded "outside groups" like The Senate Conservative Fund and The Club For Growth. While the other Shane Osborn has the strong support of lobbyists.

Here are some of the headliners for a DC fundraiser for Osborn (to be held at the HQ of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.

Wayne Berman and Charlie Black headline Osborn's D.C. fundraiser. The two K Streeters are pillars of the GOP establishment. They backed Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst over Ted Cruz in 2012. And they supported governor-turned-health-secretary-turned-lobbyist Tommy Thompson over two Tea Partiers in a heated Wisconsin primary that same year.

Lobbyist Rick Murphy, who threw a fundraiser for Dewhurst last cycle, is also on OsbornÂ’s host list.

So is Billy Piper, who was Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnellÂ’s chief of staff from 2002 to 2010. Today, heÂ’s a lobbyist at the K Street firm Fierce, Isakowitz and Blalock. Also on the host list are Piper's boss Kirk Blalock and colleague Kate Hull.

When you check out Piper, Blalock and Hull’s lobbying resumes, you see why the K Street wing can’t find peace with the conservative base. Blalock's firm pocketed about $1.5 million lobbying for government-sponsored enterprise Fannie Mae from 2002 until the company collapsed into federal conservatorship in 2008. Federal filings show Blalock lobbying for Fannie on “GSE Reform,” which means he lobbied (successfully) against Republican efforts to rein in Fannie’s unsustainable inflation of the housing bubble.

Blalock lobbied for Obama's stimulus on behalf of the windmill lobby, the American Wind Energy Association. Blalock and his firm also lobbied for wind-energy subsidies and federal rules forcing utilities to buy wind-generated power.

Sasse wanted to avoid any rift with Mitch McConnell but since the Senate Conservative Fund supported him, McConnell was having none of it.

Just keep in mind the list of people supporting Osborn next time you hear that the "outside groups" are only in it for the money.

Do you really think all those lobbyist dollars are flowing out of the goodness of their corporatist hearts?

3. John McCain Doesn't Like Richard Sherman Of The Seattle Seahawks.

That's reason enough for me to like Sherman even more.

Since both Washington and Colorado have legalized marijuana, will the traditional bets between local politicians include pot this year?

41 Besides barring citizenship while instituting some level of legalization for those here already, Mr. Cruz has proposed increasing the number of green cards awarded annually, to 1.35 million from 675,000. That amnest even appears in the lowest corner of the GOP's radar screen, is, all by itself, an astonishing and dispositive data point about how useless or even pernicious it has become.   The country is in arguable the worst constitutional, economic, fiscal, and national security shambles it's seen in a generation or more, and THIS is what the "opposition" party makes a priority?

And good point Drew about creating a de jure gastarbeiter/Saudi foreign worker situation.  Very un-American.  And note the outlandish contempt for the voters and thinking Americans implicit in McCarthy et al's approach:  they can't possibly be so stupid as to think the tiered-citizen system created by their idea would survive a nanosecond of judicial review.  It probably shouldn't - like a broken clock, America's degraded and farcical judiciary would get it right for once.

More than anything, amidst a collapsing rule of law, the GOP wants to formally and explicitly embrace the largest direct assault on the rule of law in our history?

Perhaps some of our GOP apologists would like to take a swing at rationalizing the electorally and substantively indefensible and idiotic instincts of the Beltway midgets on this one?

50 I might call the authorities today about illegals working as the cleaning crew in our office building. None have papers or stolen papers. There is one woman that cleans our floor. We love her. She is from Portugal or Cape Verde, I forget. She came to the US in 1980 & didnÂ’t speak a word of English. She took classes and then had to go learn Spanish to communicate with all that refuse to learn English. Last night she told me she left one hour early on Christmas Eve, they all do. She didnÂ’t get paid for the Christmas holiday. I asked her if anyone else did, not one that left an hour early did. But sheÂ’s the only one that can speak up because sheÂ’s legal. I havenÂ’t decided if IÂ’m going to call or not. They had someone else clean our office for a few months and she did an awful job, she couldnÂ’t even reach behind me to get trash can or recycle bin. She was nasty, lazy and didnÂ’t vacuum. She knew five words of English.

Guest-worker programs are fine - they are legal, above-board, and involve regulation and identification of all participants, with actual mechanisms to ensure compliance.  They have worked before.

Confusing lawlessness with a regulated lawful labor importation scheme is stupid, yet many will do so.

Green cards are part of legal immigration - that area has its own vast problems, but they are 100% distinct from the problem of legal immigration, and amnesty.  Arguing for more/less/different kinds of legal immigration is a policy debate; amnesty in any form is stupidly, ineptly, or dishonestly assaulting the rule of law itself.

72

Seriously? It's not about whether it's legal or not.

It's not about whether it "feels right" or is "uncomfortable"....

It's about whether the illegals pay taxes and keep the system solvent over time.

It's about whether we're all playing by the same rules OR NOT.

It's about whether we're all equal or some are "more equal than others".

It's about whether we're maintaining the rule of law or not. Do we keep a system or just give up and let some people make up the rules as we go along.

As much as King Obama thinks he can get away with that, the rest of us prefer the old Rule of Law.

75 Drew, I honestly don't know if the comparison to the Mideast (or Japan as another example) is apt. We wouldn't be closing our citizenship to legal immigrants at all. Instead we'd be pushing a penalty for those who tried to skirt the system. Is it ideal? Of course not, but we saw what a backlash even self-deportation caused. We're going to have to figure out what to do with the people already here, and it's clear the populace isn't ready for what needs to be done. Granted this still needs to be tied to clear boarder security and entry/exit system requirements, but I'm not sure it's the killer people think it is. 85 RE: Legal but not citizen, how is that different from the enormous number of legal manners to immigrate without becoming a citizen that are currently on the books? For example, my friend the vet is Canadian. She has legally immigrated to the US under some kind of professional visa wherein she can pretty much stay here as long as she wants without ever becoming a citizen. Or guest worker programs. There are guest worker programs in place now that allow people to work here legally without becoming a citizen. I mean, there is an entire category called permanent resident alien that currently exists under US immigration law. Which, as always, leads to this question. Why can we not try enforcing the laws that are already on the books before we talk about changing them?

94 I'd like someone to help me understand the amnesty thing from Republican donors.

1. Republican donors like illegals because they're cheap labor.  So they push for amnesty.
2. Let's say amnesty passes.  Now those illegals are legal--which means businesses have to start paying them minimum wage, provide health and SS benefits, etc.
3. Newly legals are thus no longer profitable to hire.
4. Businesses find new illegals to do the work cheaper than the newly legal.
5. The newly legal now can't find work, and go on welfare etc.

Am I wrong about this?  Isn't this basically asking to expand the welfare rolls?  What is wrong with the GOP donor class?

114 For the GOP, I believe that the issue is corporate interests that want cheap labor.  technical workers, H1B visas, the university complex, the food processing industry, restaurants, etc. All want cheap, cheap labor.  For these groups, the pre-programmed failure of an amnesty is a feature and not a bug.

If the GOP was the Smart Party, it would play each of the groups against each other such as the Dems have done for years.  E.g. corporate sponsored H1B visas allow visa holders to seek other jobs with other firms after six months.  This would pit the financial interest of the corporations versus the "freedom" rights of the potential immigrants.   Microsoft, Google, et al. would face the problem and cost of training the employees but be unable to reap the benefits of coolie wages of their indentured class of "kept" employees.  Ditto for universities and others that intentionally benefit from paying foreigners less than market wages.  It is time that they compete with Americans on a fair and open wage level.

115 Am I wrong about this? Isn't this basically asking to expand the welfare rolls? What is wrong with the GOP donor class? A path to citizenship will encourage more wage-slaves to emigrate here. Most won't go through the paperwork (since they understand they need to be wage-slaves), but the risk of deportation will drop to zero. Illegals are only cheap for businesses because we subsidize them - we pay their medical care, pay for their children, in many cases pay them to make up the difference for their (undeclared) slave wages.

123 The professional caste that has the money and is the backbone of donor dollars, really isn't in favor of amnesty on cheap labor grounds. It's mostly the culture they swim in. Most everyone they live and work with feels the same way. Especially their children who grew up wealthy and feel guilty about it. tslr - what "backlash" to self-deportation?  More generally, among all the wildly incorrect universal assumptions these days, the one that illegal immigration is popular, that amnesty is popular, is one of the wildest.  No polling or ballot-box results - none - support this.  Not even within the Hispanic community.

More broadly, the idea that "the country just isn't ready to (fill in the blank)" is pretty much a death sentence the country, not to mention stupid and ill-informed.   More correctly:  a huge swath of the country's non-elite elites are anxious to do zillions of disastrous, illogical, unconstitutional things that will materially worsen the situation quickly and permanently (see amnesty, fiscal insanity, etc.).   There is no evidence the populace shares their enthusiasm for these things - and much evidence to the contrary.

In 1979, the WaPo routinely referred to huge swaths of the federal budget as "uncontrollables".  Within two years the very word had disappeared.  Why?  Because a new administration that was serious simply took action (or proposed action) to CHANGE things.  Among the ample reasons for pessimism is that so many opposed to the country's course simply surrender pre-emptively by assuming (incorrectly) that things just "can't be done/proposed".

Syria is “becoming a regional conflict. It’s spread to Lebanon. It’s spread to Turkey. It’s spread to Jordan. It is spreading throughout the region, and sooner or later it will affect the United States of America if you allow a place to become a base for al-Qaeda,” McCain said in an interview on a Phoenix radio station, KFYI. “I have never seen anything like this in my life.”

McCain also took Secretary of State John Kerry to task, criticizing him for his relationship with Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov. “The people who are giving [Syrian president Bashar Assad] the weapons are the Russians, and our secretary of state is buddy-buddy and palsy-walsy with . . . his buddy Sergey in places like Geneva and others,” McCain said.

Most immigrants, legal or illegal, don't give a fuck about citizenship since aside from voting there's no difference between a citizen and a permanent resident. However, as a citizen any foreign income is taxed, but as a permanent resident, it's not.

153 As long as they keep sending out the welfare checks there won't be any violence. Look at the white ghettos in Appalachia. Mostly not that violent. ------------------------ But mostly ex-urban. Not concentrated populations. I expect the unrest might develop in heavily populated areas, but it will directed at those who write (or do not write) the welfare checks, not at illegal aliens. Do not expect the mass media to be doing stories on the negative impact of aliens. Hasn't happened, and won't happen. It does not meet their ends.

When you really poll people on specific issues about illegal immigration, they're overwhelmingly hawks.  But the GOP is so scared of the issue, they run from it, which is the worst of both worlds.  It makes voters think they are closet racists, and the people that want to somebody to do something about illegal immigration become demoralized.

The problem is, it's really easy for a few clowns to come off like racists when the media is sitting there looking for a hint of it to pounce on.

If somebody like a Ted Cruz ran as a hard nosed border hawk, he's win a landslide election nationally because once you take the RACIST element out of it, it's a winner politically.  Problem is, I think Ted Cruz is more sympathetic to amnesty than he's letting on.

219 The Pentagon is planning to relax its rules governing the religious clothing, facial hair and hairstyles that troops can wear while in uniform, a senior Defense official told Fox News. The announcement is expected on Wednesday. As first reported by NBC News, the new policy would allow service members to wear turbans, grow beards and other types of religious-based facial hair, and wear other items like yarmulkes. The directive reportedly will allow these items so long as they don't negatively affect military readiness and other factors. The changes come after a Sikh American complained about not being able to wear a turban or maintain a beard while in uniform. According to NBC News, the directive will allow immediate commanders to approve some religious accommodations, but others will have to be approved by higher-level officers. ???? 235 President Obama is taking a hit from anti-drug groups for downplaying the effects of marijuana use, as some point out his recent comments appear to clash with statements by his own health and law enforcement agencies. The president, in a recent interview with The New Yorker, likened pot to cigarettes and alcohol. "President Obama is surrounded by a myriad of experts who have voiced serious concerns about the harms of marijuana and rejected legalization, so either he is seriously ill-informed about the issue or is completely ignoring warnings from his highly-esteemed advisers." The office lists a range of negative health and mental consequences from the drug, including schizophrenia, lower IQ ("as much as an 8 point drop"), and higher risk of heart attack. The White House drug office says studies show the potency has "almost tripled over the past 20 years." The president attracted a rebuke along those lines from former Democratic Rep. Patrick Kennedy, who told MSNBC that Obama's director in charge of drug abuse would tell him "that, in fact, today's modern, genetically modified marijuana -- so it's much higher THC levels -- far surpass the marijuana that the president acknowledges smoking when he was a young person." And yes, currently and in the past, the naturalization process required/requires you to abandon your previous country's citizenship.  The difference is now most of the time they waiver that.

hat being said, Americans born in a foreign country usually have dual citizenship.  They are not required to renounce the other country.

All of this despite the fact that the actual law says dual citizenship is not allowed.

273 The Pentagon is planning to relax its rules governing the religious clothing, facial hair and hairstyles that troops can wear while in uniform, a senior Defense official told Fox News.

Frankly, I'd be surprised if rape victims were actually claiming their abortions as medical tax deductions in the first place. And even if they did now, they'd have to show documentation of the procedure in an audit anyway even in absence of this law.

Over time, hopefully the exodus of producers from blue states to red will continue. As the blue states collapse we should get a chance to invest in them, rebuild them and make furtunes during the ensuing depression/recovery. The blue model will only fall like socialists always fall, suddenly, shocking its adherents. We will be ready if we can protect our assets from confiscation near the end. That may be the most difficult part.

453 We had three valdectorians. First we had one, then the second bitched because they had received all As throughout high school, and were screwed out of registering for an AP class that #1 got to take. OK. This, of course, opened the door for #3, who also had received nothing but As yet had a different number of AP courses as well. Such special, special snowflakes.

455 SodaStream: Guilt-Free Seltzer or Blood Bubbles? My first-ever holiday party was going great until someone in the living room wanted club soda for his vodka. It’s not that I wasn’t prepared. I was in the kitchen, overseeing eggnog, and I handed my co-host a bottle of seltzer made for the occasion with my SodaStream countertop carbonator. He’s the one who told me what happened next. “Enjoy your Palestinian blood cocktails,” the left-wing reporter said to the vodka drinkers. http://tinyurl.com/pm6du2a

I would never retire there, I heard the stories of the copters coming to burn and blow to hell the pot fields back in the 80's. Drug wars? Have they ever benefited anyone? I hate drugs, but I do them. My drugs are cigs and beer. Did you know after we invaded Afghanistan it became one of the major heroin producers in da entire world? I have to wonder how many senators, DOD, congressmen or the WH (all admins) became rich off that?

465 @85

Or guest worker programs. There are guest worker programs in place now that allow people to work here legally without becoming a citizen.

I mean, there is an entire category called permanent resident alien that currently exists under US immigration law.

Which, as always, leads to this question. Why can we not try enforcing the laws that are already on the books before we talk about changing them?

The fraud in the H visa "guestworker" programs is ridiculous , in many cases , bordering  and even crossing the line on human trafficking.

Fraud detection by the government is almost non existent because cheap lettuce and heavily accented 'tech support' keep donors happy.

I have no problem with Keven McCarthy's proposal.  What Obama wants is instant Democrats.  If you don't give him what he wants, the immigration issue is dead.  If Mexicans voted Republican, there would be a barbwire fenses on the boder, and armed watch towers.  The Democrats would be building rapid trains to Mexico City to return Mexicans. Suddenly returning 11 million Mexican would not be a problem.
