— Ace And they're compelling reasons, too.
This is part of the reason I gave up on politics and stopped identifying as a Republican. There is no point supporting a Team of Losers who furthermore don't even actually have the same goals in mind I do. Not that that would make a big difference, as they are Losers, and cannot advance their goals.

Because we will be in the wilderness for a very long time if we split from the Republicans. And I don't think that the country will survive.

It's hard to figure out what's going on in the rest of the country when you spend most of your time in the wealthiest area of the country, having no economic problems whatsoever, where there are still bidding wars over waaaay overpriced homes. If that is your reality you wonder what these ungrateful SOB's are whining about back home. Besides to secure your requisite lobbying position you have to play the game right, now, not later, you have to have a history to point out.

Here's how we do a 3d party: We have a party, a HUGE one.
Invite all your friends. Goes on for days.
THEN
We throat snatch all the commies in republican clothing up, toss them off the coast (pick one), and go back to two parties, one of which is focused, founded and determined.
Then we'll see what's what.

The Republican base tend towards 'law and order'. As such...the 'illegal part' of 'illegal immigration' is non-negotiable.
Even in the event that republicans give up their 'law and order' stance...the last thing big labor wants is an influx of 'cheap non-union labor'.
So we end up with this rather bizarre cat and mouse game of derailing immigration reform by one side or the other and not being seen to be the party derailing the reforms.
Hence...the Republican 'embrace' immigration reform then big labor suddenly claims the republican reforms are 'not really reforms' and 'doing nothing' is better then the Republican plan.
As a result of this game I don't get myself upset over various immigration reform pronouncements....because it's just a big game of chicken to get someone on record as being 'anti-immigrant'...in this case 'Big Labor' has already blinked.
The 'good' union jobs are all for big companies. Big companies make a habit of checking the documentation of job applicants. As a result big companies don't employ illegal immigrants and the 'union' jobs are protected.
As soon as those 'illegal immigrants' become 'legal'...they can get past the personnel office at big companies and displace the current union membership. As immigrants are generally happy to work for less then 'union wages' the union loses.

The Two-Party Duopoly is an illusion of democracy. It's still the State versus the Citizen. The State always wins until there is a collapse. The GOP apparently wants to collapse itself first to expedite the next, bigger collapse.
I disavowed being a Republican during the last amnesty push under Bush. Now I'm essentially running against it. No "lesser of evils" game anymore. Amnesty was the last straw.

The only way they could be put on the path to citizenship is to return to their country and apply like everyone else.
That is not part of the GOP plan and would never be accepted by the Left so its just a pipe dream.

Anyway.
The biggest reason the GOP is hot to trot on amnesty is like this: All the big problems--the one's Americans say are their top priorities over and over and over--are hard. Very hard.
They require difficult choices, ones that really will piss many people off.
But, amnesty?
Down there at the bottom. Eh.
They figure they can make some sort of half-assed, fig leaf and get a big WIN they can bring back home to run on in fall.
So, they really do think we are that stupid.
They see it as meaningless and an easy win. They don't give a fuck what we see happening. We are not smart enough to be elected to Congress. They are. That makes you stupid; stupider than they.
They think they're going to bring us peace in our time.
They're going to be pretty damned lucky if they don't get tar and feathers.

Why now?, says it all. Only thing that makes sense is twofold.
(1) Heavy pressure from Chamber of Commerce/crony capitalist lobby.
(2) If they wait, people will still be livid come the Presidential election in 2016. If they push it now and it fails, it goes away. If it passes, they figure this will allow several years for anger to ebb away and apathy to set in by the time the Presidential race arrives.
Ugh.

No problems with that, in fact...don't we have laws concerning this?
Implement Entry-Exit Visa Tracking System
No problems with that, in fact I wouldn't have a problem with expanding the temp workers visa program either, but once again...don't we already have laws for this?
Employment Verification and Workplace Enforcement
I thought we were already supposed to be doing this?
So for the first three points...how about enforcing existing law? It does have the advantage of never being tried, apparently.
Youth
I actually don't have a problem with some sort of limited dream program either, except that I know that it will eventually be used to bring all the relatives in with the "legal" one being the sponsor.

I honestly don't know what to think of the GOP. They could have the greatest electoral triumph this year, and they seem determined to help the Democrats out of their troubles.
-
Because they have a far greater enemy - a populace who wants to direct their own life, and spend less. Call it the tea party or any other name, they are the enemy. The establishment GOP and the democrats are like shia and sunni arabs - there may be differences between them, but from the perspective of a Christian caught in their lands, they are almost identical.

The GOP is using anti-ObamaCare sentiment as the carrier for all the other sh*t it wants to pass now. It has done nothing to shrink the Leviathan and is coopting Progressive government. Just like "border security" is held hostage to "path to citizenship", so is any conservative legislation policy held hostage to anti-ObamaCare rhetoric. ObamaCare sentiment is the vehicle to escort big government policies conservatives won't accept.
It won't work. I refuse to play.

In your link, he claims he was taken out of context. So clarify it. "I will never, under any circumstances, give legal status to those who came to this country illegally, and furthermore, my first order of business will be to seal the border by building a 40' wall along it's entire length. " See? Simple.
You know who else says he doesn't support amnesty? Marco Rubio and Paul Ryan. If you don't support amnesty, it's pretty simple to convey that point.
Walker did not back a pathway to citizenship, as he clearly laid out in his interview with Bannon. At the time, he was presented with a purely hypothetical situation.
What does that even mean? Either you reject amnesty or you don't. Hypothetically or not, if you mean it, you can convey that. This just isn't that hard.

The fix is in. This is the deal. The Senate stays about the same so the Dems have control in return they slack off on the House elections so's the GOP can claim a victory.
This is why they don't care about what we think about amnesty; the FIX IS IN.
They'll be going through the motions just in case of a double cross but basically the GOP stays the minority in the Senate and the GOP has the House. But that's okay with the Dems because they know they can roll right over the GOP anytime they feel like it and the GOP is okay with the Dems in the Senate cause they can blame their leftward lurches on them and other such excuses.
Too bad. I may even vote Democrat just to screw up their little deal.

I keep hoping this is some sort of kabuki smoke and mirrors thing cooked up to show the GOP has a plan and cares, but they will make sure it goes nowhere. Bring it up now so that this fall it can get shelved as "oh we covered that," then let the employee mandate, or O-care enrollees soon to get letters saying they applied wrong so their coverage is dropped, take front page. But that is wishful thinking on my part, as it assumes facts not in evidence: that the GOP is actually smart.

The best thing anyone right of center can do is declare themselves as not participating in the US electoral system. Roughly half the country announcing the system as illegitimate would do more than continually voting for guys who can't wait to stab you in the back at every opportunity. Even if you believe in the idea of representative government, there is no way to win because your so-called representatives want to replace you.
Posted by: Golem_master at January 30, 2014 05:57 PM (i6/+j)
Who's going to come in and enforce a regime change on said illegitimate system? The rest of the "civilized" world is cheering on the Communists and the Rat78s/Partido Republicano Legado in their war against us, and the Islamokazis, while supportive of "regime change", only will support a change to a subservient client Caliphate state.
We're on our own, and the last of a dying breed. Either we fight and probably die now or lie back and surely die.

- John 12:25 -
There are similar sayings in Zen Buddhism/Bushido
To act rightly one must not focus on what will be lost or gained but focus on the moment and making the right moves for the conditions and actions of others.
The correct move now is if the GOP endorses/enacts an amnesty bill and that bill passes and is signed into law then they must be removed for they have failed in their duty to those who believed their promises and claims.
They will have forced this fight to be fought during a General Election because they will not reveal what they plan on doing until after the Primaries.
They have set the stage. They are trying to force those of us who have claimed principles to now make a much starker choice than in a primary. We will now have to face the fact that to show our resolve we will have to at least temporarily surrender gov't to the Democrats.
Remember THEY HAVE MADE THIS FIGHT WHAT IT IS.

The history of the last 50 years is that once you start down this path, judges and the Dems will ensure that whatever they think is to their advantage, happens, the law and the will of the people be damned. Why on earth would you trust them on something that will give them an electoral lock for the next century, and allow them to permanently alter this country, and not for the better?

I keep bringing it up but here it is again: In most respects, the current GOP Establishment is in an eerily similar position to that held by Whig Party leadership of 1852. The base of the Whig Party, frustrated with its leadership's go-along and get-along attitude towards the Democrats, as well as the Whig Party's abject refusal to oppose the Democrats over the Fugitive Slave Act, split off and formed the Republican Party. Big political names like Lincoln and Fremont crossed over and joined the new party. Others followed, and the Whigs withered into irrelevance.
Yes, the issue was slavery then, the biggest and most divisive issue in our history, but right now, the Republic is being destroyed, supplanted by an increasingly tyrannical socialist superstate. And guess what? The GOP Establishment refuses to fight--hell, they even refuse to avoid internal divisions over immigration reform because they're so eager to please the big money donors so hot for amnesty.
A party split would not be unprecedented, but I can't even guess at the outcome. The Magic 8-Ball says COME BACK LATER.

There's a multi-billion dollar class action suit developing where Microsoft, Google, Apple, etc. coordinated wage controls and hiring of staff/management to drive down wages. The whole Green Card game for STEM is not to fill slots with qualified applicants; it's to fill slots with the cheapest labor possible. Wholly qualified engineers, programmers, and expertise are being driven out of work (or their wages anti-capitalistically capped) by foreign and temp hires who are not citizens. It is these globalist entities that wish to import cheaper labor even though the talent pool already exists.
So Amnesty and its tentacle legislation is going to hit every class as far as employment and wages are concerned, nevermind the import of voting patterns that will weigh heavily socialist/fascist.

we can take it up in e-mails if you'd like.
Brother, I'm not walking back. I've lost more troops, brothers (like yeah, my two brothers... from mom brothers), dogs, cousins, friends; in the last 3 years than I can count.
You imply that because I "didn't fear" the loss that I'm mentally deficient. That's beyond insulting. But I let it go because you don't understand.
In every case, from dogs to troops to brothers, I did everything I could to the best of my ability to keep them alive for as long as I could. Offered the best advice I was capable of, made sure every troop was trained and had the gear, fed the pooches the highest quality food money could buy.
But in the end. I'm not the boss. The universe is. And it decides. All I can do is what I can do. Fear doesn't enter the equation. No time for it, no tolerance of it.

Immigration Reform: AmericaÂ’s unique competitive advantage has always been its ability to attract the best talent. Congress should fix the broken immigration system to create a larger pool of visas for higher-skilled workers, enact a new visa system for lower-skilled workers, offer a path forward for undocumented workers already living in the United States, and allocate greater resources to strengthen enforcement and secure our borders. Done right, reform can increase our economic growth rate, reduce our deficit, and contribute significantly to AmericaÂ’s future.
Done right, we can easily donate to GOP candidates rather than Dem candidates and create an indentured workforce that will outwork a Hebrew pyramid builder! Please ignore the Americans that we are laying off right and left.
Ok, I made that last part up.

Those of you who actually live where you have Republicans on the other end of the phone had better light up those phones right now. Pols always assume silence equals assent.
But please, please don't get harsh with the poor low level schlubs who have to answer the phone. It really does matter how you come across. Personable and polite but firmly determined works best.
"You know I've voted for Senator Stemwinder regularly in the past, and I had hoped to continue that, but if he supports this reckless amnesty, there's just no way I will ever be able to vote for him again. If the Senator wants support next election, he had better not support this nonsense."
You don't have to actually voice the concept that if Stemwinder gets tossed out on his rear, so does the staffer you're talking to. And you don't have to explicitly explain that the staffer's job prospects after politics are not anywhere nearly as lavish as Stemwinder's are. Staffers understand all that quite well already.
Postal letters work well too. Especially a lot of them at once. There's something about the visual impact of overflowing mail sacks in the office anteroom that scares the pants off of pols.

Yep, I do. Course I also believed that letting Obamacare play out was a much better strategy than shutting down the government over an issue we could never win was a better strategy too.
How did that work out?
Posted by: JackStraw at January 30, 2014 06:28 PM (g1DWB)
We could never win on that issue because we still have the same people leading the republican party then as are leading it now. The same people who were undercutting the shutdown at every opportunity, who passed a TRILLION DOLLAR FARM BILL, who passed a debt ceiling increase without a fight (because that was a hill to die on), who rid us of the sequester cuts after saying it was here to stay, who removed veterans benefits but could not bear to cut food stamps, who will not investigate by select committee: Benghazi, the IRS scandal, the NSA, or Holder's Fast and Furius.
I could go ON AND ON. And you tell us now that legalization won't lead to citizenship? What facts based on the history of this party lead you to this conclusion? Because any sane individual would look at this and laugh in your face for your Charlie Brown level of idiocy.

You do realize that as soon as the Beltway Motherfuckers recognize 34 states as wanting an Article V Convention, they will hijack it to "constitutionally" force the USSA on us, no further state legislature involvement required, right? There is no mechanism requiring Congress to recognize a state's right to choose its own delegates to either the national convention or its own ratification convention.

"You paid into the system for your benefits. Now they're talking about adding thirty million more people to the system, who didn't pay in a dime, or who if they paid in, paid far less then you did. It is Congress that calls the national convention, not the states. There is nothing other than nearly-230-year-old precedent (that violated the Articles of Confederation, BTW) that says the states have a role in selecting who goes to that convention. No mention in the Constitution that states have the right to send dlegates, no federal statute that says the states have the right to send delegates - nothing.
Further, Congress, at its discretion, can call state-level conventions for ratification in lieu of ratification by state legislatures. Again, there is nothing that says that Congress can't hand-pick the delegates.
As we've seen over the last 100-some years, if there is no prohibition against the federal government usurping the powers of the states (and even in cases where there is a prohibition), the federal government will usurp states' powers.

I've been suspicious of the motives of Big Business ever since the Reagan years.
You will recall Lenin's adage that "the capitalists will sell us the rope we will use to hang them". Well, the corporate fat cats were fucking well clamoring for rope export permits to let them trade with the USSR.
The fat cats said sheepishly, "Well, they pay on time." Yeah, the blood money from slave labor and genocidal theft arrives promptly. What a thing to be proud of.
I later learned, once I got a bit further up the cynicism curve, of the extensive cooperation between Big Business in the USA, and that in Nazi Germany. Including right in the middle of the war!

Article V
"The Congress, whenever two thirds of both houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose amendments to this Constitution, {{{or, on the application of the legislatures of two thirds of the several states, shall call a convention for proposing amendments,}}} which, in either case, shall be valid to all intents and purposes, as part of this Constitution,
"shall call a convention" gives congress no authority to reject such convention. The states can amend the cons without any input for congress.

Nope. You're wrong. States can and are gearing up for a Article V Constitutional convention. All perfectly within the realm of the Constitution. It was the last stopgap (right before armed rebellion) the founders put in (at the insistance of the states) against a runaway fed government.

State level conventions are not a norm. Most amendments were passed with state legislatures. On you other point, there is nothing that says that congress can pick the delegates either. No legislation has been passed on a federal level dealing with this. In fact the only thing the constitution states is that congress shall call when 2/3 of the state legislatures call for a convention.
The states can simply deny any authority congress claims it has because congress has no authority over a article V convention.

So now you've managed to piss off an entire state, a state that grows that food you deem to be so horrible. Nice work jackass.
FWIW, I grew up 70 miles east of Omaha NE. Been to Nebraska many times. Took my first (preliminary) oath at a MEPS station there. Have relatives there. If you are basing your opinion of Nebraska from interstate truck stops you're an idiot.

1: Write and call your Congressman ASAP to tell them you will not be voting for anyone who supports ANY "immigration reform."
2: A man named J.D. Winteregg is challenging John Boehner in the primary. Give him a donation, follow him on Twitter, and like him on Facebook.
3. A man named Dave Brat is challenging Eric Cantor in the primary. Give him a donation, follow him on Twitter, and like him on Facebook.
4. Flood John Boehner's Twitter with protestation.
5. Flood your own Congressman's Twitter with protestation.
They need to know that anyone who supports this--ANYONE--will not have support this November.
It's time we get organized about this.

There is one little tiny favor I want to ask all of y'all, though. Since you are "leaving" the GOP, is it too much to ask you to kindly BUTT THE HELL OUT of our Party primaries and policy discussions? I mean, I'm sure you'll be plenty busy working on your new party, won't you?
If you are serious enough about "LEAVING THE GOP" to whine incessantly about it and to allow Democrats even more victories and power, shouldn't you be "leaving" in a way we will notice besides your usual betrayal of staying home when you don't get your way?
How can we ever miss you when you just will not go away?

For steveegg, the relevant part of the constitution dealing with Article V:
Article. V. The Congress, whenever two thirds of both Houses shall deem it necessary, shall propose Amendments to this Constitution, or, on the Application of the Legislatures of two thirds of the several States, shall call a Convention for proposing Amendments, which, in either Case, shall be valid to all Intents and Purposes, as Part of this Constitution, when ratified by the Legislatures of three fourths of the several States, or by Conventions in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other Mode of Ratification may be proposed by the Congress;

Read the parts I bolded carefully. It is Congress who would call the national convention, not the states. Therefore, it is Congress who would decide how said convention is formed, not the states.
I'm sure most states are like Wisconsin, with absolutely no mechanism for creating a ratifying convention. In that vacuum, Congress would step in and define how the ratifying conventions are set up as part of demanding their use to ensure a successful and unanimous "ratification".
The time to have implemented an Article V Convention was between 2003 and 2006, before the proto-Communists took control of Congress. Then we would have had a 50/50 shot of not getting fucked with a lit stick of dynamite. Now, with the proto-Communists ruining the Senate and the wanna-be's ruining the House, it's a choice between getting a lit stick of dynamite and getting a white phosphorous grenade with the pin pulled.
If it sounds like I'm saying it's too late for political salvation, I guess I am.

translated - "I'm smarter than you because I blindly support the GOP".
I love such intelligent, well thought out arguments for why the GOP is doing the right thing.

I wish you would use your platform to encourage other conservatives to sit out the 2014 elections.
The only way to change the behavior of the GOP is to get its attention. The only way to get its attention is to withhold our votes. (a primary here and there simply does not work - we have tried it for 30 years and the tactic has not moved the GOP to the right in the GOP's actions. Granted, the GOP's rhetoric has moved to the right, but its actions have decidedly not moved to the right and actions are all that is important).
think of it like a company selling a product. If the product's sales drop suddenly by 10% or so, the company is going to notice and try and figure out why.
In this case, the GOP is selling a product. It takes its base consumers - those who regularly buy their product (with votes), for granted. It assumes that those consumers will continue to buy its product no matter what.
So, in order to try and expand the sale of its product, it is changing the product dramatically to suit other tastes. As long as the base consumer keeps buying the product, there is no downside to doing this and lots of potential upside (new consumers).
But, if the company instead loses market share by doing this (i.e., loses a large percentage of its consumer base), it will realize that the strategy of radically changing the product is not good.
Here, the analogy is not perfect because the GOP never actually provided the product marketed to us - it never has acted conservative. But, it is now edging even further and further left in the hopes of attracting new consumers - in the belief that its present consumers (we conservatives) will not care.
If we vote GOP in 2014 - we prove this theory correct and the GOP will move even further left.
But, for a boycott/strike by conservative to work - we need champions with large audiences to sell the strategy and get people on board.
Yes, if we do this, the GOP probably won't win the Senate and may lose the house in 2014. But, what is worse in the long term - not winning this election cycle or the GOP moving even further to the left than it already is?

This is exactly why we need to prove them wrong. What "mortal sin" will the GOP do next believing that we will vote for them no matter what? Every cycle it is something else - raising spending, increasing gov't, amnesty.
And, Boehner, McConnell and most of the GOP establishment has made it pretty clear that it will not repeal Obamacare, only "fix" it. Which means that the next mortal sin will be not only embracing Obmacare, but giving Obamacare the veneer of a bi-partisan program, meaning we won't even be able to run against Obamacare when it fails miserably because the GOP will have bought into Obamacare.

What I am proposing is a last-ditch effort to salvage the GOP. If that doesn't work, then sure - we should try and form a new party. the problem with trying to start a new party is it is a LOT more than a few thousand people.
If we could get most of the big conservative blogs on board with starting a new party, and maybe a bunch of the conservative talk-show hosts (Hannity, Rush, etc.), we could probably pull it off.
but, even at conservative sites like this, most of the people still support the GOP no matter what it does. And these are the high-information, politically active conservatives. Getting all of the much less informed, much less active people who vote GOP, donate $ to the GOP, etc. on board with a 3rd party is a decades long endeavor.
So, while I'm not against doing so, I say we try to salvage the GOP if we can. Problem is, conservatives won't do it. They'll keep voting GOP no matter what the GOP does "because we can't let the dems win". It is not rational - it is purely tribal. They don't see allowing the GOP to lose an election as a tactical move to force the GOP rightward - they only see things in terms of which letter wins an election.
The GOP can pass amnesty, raise spending, sign on to Obamacare, and do all kinds of anti-conservative things, and conservatives will just smile and take it.
