GOP Congressman: We're Almost There on an Immigration Deal
— Ace

Great.

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Fla., told CQ Roll Call that pro-rewrite calls earlier this week from two Illinois Republicans, Reps. Adam Kinzinger and Aaron Schock, recent comments from Speaker John A. Boehner, combined with a rash of immigration rallies and protests across the nation in recent days, are indications that momentum has shifted back to those hoping to implement an overhaul of the nationÂ’s immigration laws this year.

...

“I think we finally have the policy right,” he said in a phone interview. “I think we have figured out a way to secure, to have border and interior security, holding the administration accountable for the enforcement … forcing the administration to enforce the law whether they want to or not. And I think we figured out a way to deal with the folks that are here in a way that is fair — fair, by the way, to those in the legal system … who are doing everything legally, and also deals with the folks that are here in a way that is fair and reasonable. And adheres, strictly adheres, to the rule of law.

“So I think we finally have the policy right. And what we’re finding is more and more people out there as they’re seeing it, different aspects of the policy, are starting to say, ‘Hey, that is something that makes sense.’”

Diaz-Balart said he thinks theyÂ’re close to a deal that can pass both chambers.

“It is as close as we have ever been. It is still a big, big, heavy lift,” he said. “I think we’re going to get there.”

I am skeptical. This skepticism is based upon the fact that all previous "compromises" have consisted of various methods to deceive those opposed to amnesty that they were getting something out of the deal, when in fact they were getting nothing.

Really then.

And what precisely would be this magical "way" to hold the administration accountable? This notional "way" to force the administration to enforce the law?

And why the haven't we heard word one about this special "way" up until now, as this unaccountable administration has regularly refused to enforce laws?

Charlie Brown, Lucy and the football. Over and over again.

Democrats reneged on every single promise they made regarding the 1986 amnesty and the "border security" that was supposed to follow. Why in the world would anyone think they would do anything different this time?

One great big California from coast to coast. America becomes a national one-party state. It'll be Venezuela writ large. Right down to the Vice Ministry Of Supreme Social Happiness and no toilet paper. That's where this is all going to end up unless the GOP return to dealing with reality.

21 Ok, the feathers part is easy, but I've been having a heck of a time with the tar. First off, what kind? It needs to be heated so it's the correct viscosity. It can't be too hot, we don't want it to blister. Too much. I suppose we could go green and not use a petroleum based tar, but some other kind of thing like tree pitch. I'm sort of stumped here. 50 I don't believe Republicans actually want to lead or have a majority.  Establishment Republicans want the same things as Democrats - just maybe not to the same degree.  By engineering amnesty and a permanent Democrat majority (at least at the national level) they can crow about how they're bravely fighting against the Democrats while chipping at the margins of the Democrats big government schemes.

Ok, so I was wrong. Beers on me I guess.

55

Oh FFS.  A "Republican" incumbent actually said this?

Torquewrench beat me to it (not the first time) - so what exactly is the way of "forcing the administration to enforce the law whether they want to or not."  WTF?

Oh - and WTF is "fairness" to illegals?  And how the F do you provide amnesty (this, is, by definition, the core of any legislation that directly changes anything affecting lawbreakers - for this, or any other existing law) that "adheres, strictly adheres, to the rule of law"?

Note: all the above are rhetorical questions.

Leave aside the race-baiting, lawlessness from all sides, and stupid irresponsible self-dealing that are the heart of this amnesty obsession (I'm leaving out the trivial element of clueless "compassionate" idiots who feel better about their ignorant selves because they'd be helping brown people), does anyone actually believe amnesty will do a damn thing apart from ensure more of the same immigration infractions?

It's blazingly simple:  anything other than enforcing the law, and securing the border, constitutes incentive for further illegality.  Duh.  There's no way around this.  In Simpson-Mazzoli (the 1986 bill), at least there wasn't any pretension that amnesty would NOT be a giant magnet for additional illegality - and that's where the co-equal (and essentially disregarded, of course) elements of border security and employer enforcement came from.

In a country where the monstrous idiocy of O-care is even conceivable, much less reality, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.  But amnesty will, besides all its obvious other pernicious effects, be a giant incentive to rational intending illegal immigrants (the majority) for further illegality.  I don't even see this indisputable, guaranteed outcome even mentioned.

58 This is the death knell for America if ever there was one.  I'm so disgusted, so sickened.  If this is all true and amnesty is imminent, we just need to call it quits.  We all know the millions upon millions of "act of love" illegals will tip political races in the Dems favor in dramatic fashion.  It's going to be catastrophic on so many levels.  I honestly believe it will be less than 5 years and TX will forever be blue.  As will many other states.  These politicians are nothing but traitors.  They are bound and determined to let this happen.  They're bound and determined to ruin this country in all ways possible.  Damn them all.  I'm beyond the point of anger.  I truly am.

63 Seal the border, shoot anyone coming across as spies - as we have the right to under International Law and Custom. Start with that as a negotiating tactic instead of starting with "We have no sovereignty" like this numbskull is talking. Start hard, then compromised A BIT. Like increasing the greencards per nation by 10% while disallowing everyone caught as an illegal forever, starting in 6 months. If you get caught after October 31st, then you will never, ever be allowed back in under any circumstances. It will result in self-deportation, guaranteed by past data.

72 "Getting the policy right" is the perfectly meaningless metaphor for perfectly cynical and vacuous politicians. It implies some enlightened technocrat carefully and dispassionately calibrating his Wonkometer for the Greater Good of Society. Just that the Wonkometer is behind the curtain and the instructions are in a dialect of occult Wonkish, so we have to take it on faith that it's all just Good Stuff with absolutely no meaningful rationale either by science, morality, history or economics why flooding the country with more poor people from the Third World is going to be such a great thing for the USA. But the GOP, since 2008, has not only refused to even consider this central power of the Congress - especially of the House, GOP-controlled since 2010 - but has gone along with budget-less governance by CR (from an astounding, disastrously elevated base figure).

One of the only times that the congressional GOP even unsheathed this vital sword - the "shutdown" - it folded easily, after its numerous weak and stupid members began attacking the only people willing to do or say something.  While the administration - outdoing its already barely believable self in terms of politically disastrous arrogant misbehavior - was blocking elderly WWII vets from their memorial, and harassing visitors to national parks.

130 @94 I agree The whole "reform" thing is another piece of Manchurian focused group propaganda, couching the entire immigration debate as to what degree we, the citizens of the United States, must make it easier for people to come en masse and stay here forever. There was nothing "broken" about the immigration system until the powers that be decided to stop enforcing the law. If you want more guest workers on a seasonable basis for big Agriculture, we can take a look at that, provided that they go home at the end of the season, and immigration in the sense of permanent immigration is based first and foremost on the needs of this country.

An "enforceable trigger" is as meaningful as a dog fart. It would change zero behavior in this worthless regime and cause no action for anyone anywhere. Your talking about what shape balloon animals are going to be handed out at the party and whether or not that would prevent the President from flapping his arms and declaring himself king bird man. In the U.S., we're constantly being told that whites will no longer be the majority by mid-century, as if it is an inevitable fact of nature. But it is not inevitable; it is deliberate policy. Likewise, any white American who complains is labeled a racist. When all is said and done, will there be any country left on Earth that has a white majority? Russia, maybe? In both Europe and the U.S., the politicians who are imposing these policies are themselves white. Why are they doing this? What is their desired endgame?

Kirby said Hagel requested clarification of Russia's intentions in eastern Ukraine, and the Russian defense minister, Sergei Shoygu (sayr-gay shoy-goo), reassured Hagel that Russian forces will not invade.

So let's see. A forty cent incandescent in a bedroom lamp just bit it. I can replace it with a spiffy new LED of equivalent output -- dimmable, because it's a dimmer fixture -- for a cool $20. Such a deal!

337 If you look at countries with a lot of ethnic diversity, you end up with ethnic bloc voting. In parliamentary systems you often end up with just flat out ethnic parties. In America the white % is shrinking. The Democrats made a strong play, successfully, for the non-white vote, while trying to hold onto a sizeable minority of the white votes. It worked. It's not good that the Repubs are become the white party and the Dems are becoming the anti-white party. But it was fairly predictable. This ethnic political split doesn't bode well for the peaceful future of America.

370 Finally, perhaps the best way to shift norms around pet ownership is to simply start working to rebuild community interactions. Community gardens, book clubs, resilience circles, neighborhood tool and toy libraries, church groups, and transition towns: all of these might go a long way in providing the social engagement that a walk with the dog currently provides. And unlike a dog, community ties will play an essential role in helping people get through the disruptions climate change will bring. Has this idiot considered the possibility that we have pets precisely because we don't want "social engagement" with human assholes? Get your effing "community" out of my face.

As for "community gardens", a little known bit of American political backstory.

Karl Hess, the guy who wrote Goldwater's 1964 convention speech, was by 1968 living in the ghetto trying to teach the locals all about... community gardening. As a self-reliance, character building, up by the bootstraps sort of thing.

He was trying to deliver food to customers from his brother's Chinese restaurant when he got confused and ran a stop sign. He didn't have his driver's license on him so he was arrested for no license and running a stop sign. His sister-in-law came to court and brought me his license so I dismissed that charge and, in part because I didn't want the taxpayers to pay for an interpreter, I dismissed the stop sign charge also. So what do the feds do? ICE grabs him and he is held in custody until an ICE hearing in Denver. Yeah, this Asian who works for a living must be detained.

The point is EBT, AFDC, WIC, SNAP, SSI and all of the rest of the alphabet-soup welfare state programs.

If you're not paying for anything, getting free rides on everything down to a smartphone, and you're gaming the system at every turn, and the very worst that can happen to you is being sent back to your country of origin, and the odds of that are damned slim under this President, then wouldn't you figure it was a good deal for you?

But, you will say, illegal aliens can't "access" those benefits.

Bullshit. Obama's dear Auntie Zeituni managed to do so just fine despite being an illegal. So has Uncle Omar.

439 This is the proof that it is all over. Toll fees from dozens of deep pocket industries to the GOP to bring this bill in. Bribes and promises of more riches to the Reps that get on board. Facebook is hurting and needs to fire a few hundred Americans so that company sponsored Visa engineers from India can be hired for half the salary and zero stock options. Six years into the worst recovery in history and they want to take campaign contributions from chicken processors and corporate farmers to bring in Central Americans at $9/hr. The only things politicians from both parties react to now are money and threats of violence from Leftist groups. I would be a fool to accept their authority. The Federal government is a huge cancerous tumor killing the Country and its citizens. They boast of destroying political opponents while the party of freedom and small government is a grass roots movement called 'terrorists' by sitting leaders from both sides of the spectrum. This is a Civil War.

I keep thinking that it would do our nation a service is every one of those Washingtonians had to spend a night in holding, holding their pee so as not to loose their spot to sit on the floor, contemplating the value of our open border policy and the effect it is having on communities besides the cheap labor and affordable housecleaning

I see the GOP being complicit on most if not all those things on your list! People will not vote for a party that does everything the democrats do and does not counter anything the democrats say about them. So many GOP politicians use and accept the dem talking points as foundational facts and build from there. There is no questioning of dem reasoning. There is no outreach. No, we get a consultant insulated politician and a poorly messaged and expensive airwaves war.

Any plan promising enforcement of any immigration law by this administration is a fucking joke.  There is no law anymore in the event there is a political/popular benefit to the admin or Barky, particularly the latter.  All else from love of country to basic notions of decency be damned.  The 'rats are so far gone in the hands of the extremists, that there are no honest brokers there.

Allah finds these immigration posts rile up the troops and get a lot of comments, and it's all the same rehash so it's easy on him. That and polls is most of what he does these days. THEN WE'LL TALK. - - - - - - (I no longer believe what you SAY you'll do, you damned Establicrat GOPers. I only believe what I see you HAVE DONE. You have pissed away any trust I had in you.)

521 Just a very inspiring person- An American priest, Fr. Walter Ciszek imprisoned in the notorious Lubyianka (sp) prison and then working in terrible conditions in Siberia while also officiating at Mass at clandestine services. The work to have him canonized goes forward. He had written two books, "With God in Russia" and a wonderful resource about faith in very tough times, "He Leadeth Me". Here;s an article about his life: http://catholicstand.com/father-walter-ciszek-god-russia/
