Eh, looks fun-nish. The conceit that they're not heroes per se, but intergalactic outlaws (who I assume will, in a Firefly-like way, wind up fighting for good despite themselves), is attractive.

I dunno. Eh, I'll probably see it.

But on DVD.

I'm a Marvel Movie 'Verse fan, but this one doesn't interest me at all.  Hopefully fans of the work will enjoy it.   If it gets good press I might check it out on Amazon Prime.

19 Thanos is the big bad for Avengers 3. This movie moves along the 'Infinity Gauntlet' plot for that film. The trailer for GotG is more a teaser. From what I've seen this is going to be THE hit of the Summer, highly anticipated. The comics are pretty darn good too.

Posted by: coondawg68 at February 19, 2014 11:32 AM (8UBs9)

20 Ooh ooh. The Guardians are very likely being introduced to the Marvel movie-verse for the upcoming Avengers 2 plot against Thanos. Generally, the Fantastic 4 would be there as comic relief/2nd tier team, but Fox still has them.

100 My totally unscientific test for whether these movies will be successful is: Has my 63 year old father heard of it? I can pretty much predict how these movies will do based on his casual nostalgia. He read Thor, Avengers and Iron Man in the 60s as a kid. He always thought Green Lantern sucked. He's never heard of Guardians or Judge Dredd (awesome movie btw which bombed) for that matter.

109 true but that is a feature not a bug. As you may know, they sold all of their top properties long ago (and it will be a while before they get them back). So they've been attempting to make movies out of their lesser properties, and yeah, it doesn't seem this way now, but Iron Man was a lesser property, and so was Thor and Captain America. They have done very well for themselves with B-Teamers. Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Assault Hobbit at February 19, 2014 03:46 PM (4df7R) His impersonation of pretty much everyone is hilarious. Oh, hey, random movie sort of rec time. I finally got around to watching Byzantium the other night and I quite enjoyed it. It was a neat take on vampires and, as always for a Neil Jordan film, was gorgeously shot. The scene with the teacher being a wee bit condescending about lol vampires and then finding out um yeah that's true, you know, was very well staged and shot. Here's the but. But. It is slow, there's a bunch of back story that's never really explained, though I tend to like that, and it's very much a Neil Jordan film which means you are aware of the technique and thinking about things such as color saturation and framing and tracking and the like as opposed to the story. It's worth a watch, though. Oh and Gemma Arterton is more or less playing a succubus and she dresses the part. There's that as well.

159 Kinda funny/ironic National Review ‏@NROcorner Snowboarding Women and Unisex Slopes: WhatÂ’s a Feminist to Do? http://natl.re/1maFNlf In a preview of the U.S. militaryÂ’s planned integration of females into combat positions, female skiers and snowboarders have been wiping out at disproportionate numbers at the Extreme Park in Sochi. Unlike traditional ski runs, which vary in difficulty according to whether they are designed for males or females, the course for highflying snowboarders and freestyle skiers is largely unisex: Females are expected to navigate the same jumps as the males. The result has been an avalanche of female falls and injuries: Of the 22 accidents that either forced athletes out of the competition or required medical attention on the final run, 16 involved female skiers, reports the New York Times, even though far fewer females than males actually essay the course. For the Times, this state of affairs presents both an insuperable puzzle and a painful dilemma. The “question” why females are crashing more is a “difficult one,” claims the paperÂ’s male sports reporter. Really? As a purely factual matter, the answer is simple: Females have less strength and muscular control than males, making them less able to navigate the greater physical challenges of the extreme course. How to properly respond to the female crash tally, however, is difficult. Ordinarily, anything bad happening to females is a sure sign that they are being victimized by sexism. So the default feminist reaction to the female wipe-outs is to blame the course designers. Kim Lamarre, a Canadian bronze medalist in slope style skiing, is happy to oblige: “Most of the courses are built for the big show, for the men,” she told the Times. “I think they could do more to make it safer for women.” Uh-oh! Gender-studies red flag! “Making it safer for women,” as in: recognizing female difference and adopting a chivalric attitude towards the female sex? Big, big problem. The OlympicsÂ’ history of “trying to protect women from the perils of some sports” by creating easier ski courses is “sexist, perhaps,” agonizes the TimesÂ’ reporter. And yet, the “equality” at Extreme Park comes at the “possible detriment of the female participants.”

That's the problem with all the special interest groups.  PC demands that we treat them equally but not so equally that we actually treat them equally.  I was pretty surprised by that micro-aggression thread from a few days ago.  A professor is criticized for micro-aggression because he corrected the grammar of minority students.  Why isn't it micro-aggression to assume that minorities are too damn dumb to learn grammar? I suspect that the idea is to keep all of us HHs (heterosexual honkies) always wrong nd always fearful by applying draconian secret PC rules that we can never understand.

Although I do wonder how this particular story made it into an Urban Fantasy anthology. It was more like a "Holy crap, let me tell you what happened to me" kind of story.

264 AMDG, really?

I thought the character designs for Flashpoint were terrible, with Aquaman looking like a 'roided-up bodybuilder.  Admittedly, I hated Flashpoint because it gave us the nu52 also, but some of the designs (and I know they were from the comics) were pretty funny looking.

Justice League War was ... well, it was something, anyway.  I hated the redesigns, esp. Darkseid.  And Darkseid was a force of nature -- until War, where he was a roaring musclebound punching guy.  Didn't think there was any character development to speak of, and again, I know that was also a problem (IMHO) with the comics it came from.

I will agree, though, that DC's animated fare has been simply excellent, from the DVD items to things like Young Justice.  I think my absolute favorite was Crisis on Two Earths.

That being said, where is my "Judas Contract" animated Titans film?  I know, it will never happen since the Titans were repackaged as kiddie-fare, but I remember when Judas Contract was supposed to be the first of the new direct to video/DVD offerings, and then nothing!

I would have killed to see the Perez character designs for a full feature, and not just a blink-and-miss-it joke in Teen Titans Go.

269 Speaking of movie treatments and scripts There is an anthology book out called Urban Fantasy (the "new" genre of SciFi-Fantasy books) and there is a pretty good story in there by Neil Gaiman about an author whose book is picked up to be made a movie. The author flies out to Hollywood from England. The sequence of events makes me believe that Neil Gaiman experienced this first-hand. Although I do wonder how this particular story made it into an Urban Fantasy anthology. It was more like a "Holy crap, let me tell you what happened to me" kind of story. Posted by: DaveinNC

@10 Do I have to turn in my nerd/dork card if I admit I have never heard of Guardians of the Galaxy?

-------------------

Kinda.  The name actually goes back quite a ways, but it predates the current group.  The original Guardians of the Galaxy were a group of (mostly genetically modified) humans from a few centuries in the future who would occasionally show up in the present day.  So long-time Marvel fans might be familiar with that group.

The current group - which is the group depicted in this movie - is a completely new and unrelated group who are not from the future, but are using the same name.  They've been around for a few years, and presumably make appearences in the "Meanwhile, elsewhere in the galaxy..." crossovers that Marvel's been doing over the last few years.  Those crossovers have apparently seen some of the big nasties that would otherwise turn up on Earth for some inexplicable reason instead causing trouble on a galactic scale as their background implies they ought to do.  And starting the trouble somewhere other than Earth for once.

My understanding is that the big bad in this movie works for Thanos.  But while Thanos himself might make an appearence, the movie won't end with Thanos himself getting the smack down.  That will no doubt be held in reserve until Avengers 3.

The problem with too many of their animated movies is that they are too short. I really liked Young Justice and JLU on TV because it was long-form story telling. DKR is over 2 hours long which gives it room to breathe. Flashpoint and War feel rushed from one plot point to another. I feel a lot of that is because of the 75 minute running time.

Doing self-deprecating slap-stick to earn your living between "good" roles? Gotta chuckle since I'd rather watch Charlie Chaplin for entertainment than the self-obsessed leading man Richard Burton (Spy Who Came In From the Cold; ...Virginia Wolf). One problem I have with the DCAU movies is that they always have to be "big." Like Big Event Stories. Like Flashpoint. And such Big Event Stories always wind up as Monster Mash of dozens of heroes and villains. I know in terms of economics, this sells, and that's why they do them. But I'm tired of the Monster Mash stories, and would like to see more focused stories that don't feature a cast of dozens of costumed types.
