Gun Thread (1-12-2014)
— andy

Well done, Redditor. Well done.

This may be the best use of 3D printing ever.

Mother-Jones-AR-15.jpg

If thereÂ’s one thing the anti-gun zealots at Mother Jones hate, itÂ’s firearms in the hands of law-abiding American citizens. If thereÂ’s another thing Mother Jones hates, itÂ’s probably the ability of those same law-abiding citizens to manufacture their own means of self-defense from the comfort of their own homes via a 3D printer.

One gun lover at reddit decided to 3D-print his own homage to Mother Jones: a homemade lower receiver for an AR-15-style rifle, complete with serial number. And just for kicks, he made sure the serial number matched the phone number for the main office at Mother Jones. The redditor even printed the Mother Jones logo on the receiver.

ZOMFG!!11! Florida Is Going To Allow 'Warning Shots'! Or Not.

Any time a news story about self defense law hits, I check to see what Andrew Branca has to say about it.

Florida’s misnamed “Warning Shot” bill, Senate Bill 448, has advanced another step, with a 5-to-0 vote in favor by the State Senate Criminal Justice Committee, chaired by State Senator Greg Evers [R]

...

In fact, [there is no] mention of “warning shots” whatever. [The bill and its companion in the Florida House] are, in fact, really merely efforts to fix an apparent glitch in Florida’s current self-defense law framework (hence their overwhelming support).

A close reading of Florida’s various self-defense statutes — including 776.012 Defense of Persons, 776.013 Home Protection, and 776.031 Defense of Others, and 776.032 Immunity — can result in the interpretation that they address only the actual use of force against another, and not the mere threat of the use of such force.

This has resulted in cases where a person who has merely threatened the use of force — e.g, displaying a defensive firearm to an attacker — finds himself with less legal justification than if he had taken the next step of actually using that force–e.g., shooting their attacker. The seeming result would be to encourage the use of deadly force, even in circumstances where the use of such force could have been avoided.

Read the whole thing. You'll likely hear a lot about this bill in the MFM, and most of what you hear will be wrong.

Gun Of The Week - Answer

That's the Finnish Jatimatic submachinegun. Why a Russian invader of the US was carrying one in Red Dawn, I'll never know.

Ariel Sharon, RIP

He knew his way around a gun.

17 The massacre in the camp that they try to blame Sharon for was by arabs seeking revenge for their families being massacred by palistinians. In the early days of cnn, they had one of the killers on. His face and voice was disguised and he described what happened. It was pretty chilling. He said that he did not see them as people - that all he thought of was how his own family murdered and the women raped and murdered. Things don't happen in a vacummn but it's the muslims who always claim they are the victims. Fuck 'em.

50 @40 Are you asking how unreliable it is or how much I would ask for it? It has an unacceptable FTF/FTE with 3" slugs and I am not happy with 3" shot either. It can handle 2-3/4" of both acceptably. I would like $800 for it.

Posted by: Kreplach at January 12, 2014 06:45 AM (Xkr8I)

51 Speaking of Finnish weapons...

I always like to play the "Rank the best gun designers in the world" game. JMB is obviously #1, but things get contentious after that. One guy I've never thought of before, but who deserves consideration, is Aimo Lahti. Fifty designs, including:

The Suomi SMG (which inspired the Soviet PPSh)
The Lahti L-35 9mm pistol
The Lahti-Saloranta 7.62mm LMG
The Lahti L-39 20mm semiautomatic (!) anti-tank rifle.

That's some serious range right there. His designs were little-used outside of Finland, not because they weren't excellent (they were), but probably because they were designed primarily to work in brutal winters. The Lahti pistol, in particular, is huge for a 9mm.

52 It has an unacceptable FTF/FTE with 3" slugs and I am not happy with 3" shot either.

Doesn't sound too inspiring.  Does it specifically say it can handle 3" shells?  Maybe that's the problem.

53 45 Yes I do right now, but yesterday was a special case. Individually I had out of the blue. One electrical circuit quit (gfi stopped working) then a sink leak (seems that when it was installed years ago, it was bearly on the edge of being done right) then a roof leak (a single roofing nail had worked its way out over the years). And to relate that all to guns, after I was finished, I was ready to shoot somebody.

I used to have an Arsenal AK with folding triangle stock, and they fit great in the tennis racket bag. I miss the sneaky aspect of that, but never could warm up to the AK platform, no matter how much I admired it. Used to have a para-FAL, and the double-racket bag would hold it with stock folded as well. I actually carried it 4 times up-and-down a crowded elevator in Asheville (forgot my car keys in my room), nobody batted an eye. The fact that the locals woulda' had a serious case of the vapors if they knew what was in it gave me serious wood. Also, uploading pics of my new CZ now. Link forthcoming.

Y'know, I used to think the same thing, especially with the zombie nonsense. Now I've got a slightly more charitable view. I think that people are just so scared shitless now, and the problems we face are so insurmountable and so complex, that people are anxiously latching onto fantasies that give them a comforting sense of control.

Zombies are a simple problem (zombie) that has a simple solution (shoot the zombie).

I don't think they're relishing the fantasy itself, but the simple solution. They're not motivated by hostility or aggression or death-worship, but by fear. And I'd wager there's not a person who reads this blog who isn't scared shitless by the state and direction of civilization right now.

Posted by: Taro Tsujimoto at January Thanks, I'm very happy with her. Been wanting one for years. Just got the rings in last night, had the Leupold for about a week, just sitting there taunting me, unmounted. Gave me time to tune the trigger, and relieve the stock channel to free-float that barrel (had a little binding). It came stock with a 5-round flush magazine, but one little-known secret is that the CZ 750 Counter Urban Sniper .308 10-round magazine fits the CZ 550s in both .243 and .308. Painful at $120 a pop for the mags, tho. The wood is beautiful, but has me confused. I thought all the CZ wood stocks were made from Turkish Walnut, but when I set this one next to my other CZ, they don't even look like the same kind of wood, so I'm clueless. I'm a wood (lower-case-m) moron.

82 Ture Value hardware in Alpine, TX has a guns and ammo section. That little store has everything you need in life except fresh food, so you have to go across the street to the grocery store for that. Last time I was there I ordered a county commemorative Henry rifle in .22. It may take 6 months to arrive.

83 Y'know, I used to think the same thing, especially with the zombie nonsense. If you're into prepping, check out the Zombie Squad forums. Great prepper site. They have great fun with the theme, but tons of good info. One of the disclaimers in the about page, paraphrased, is: "Yes, we know there's no such thing as zombies. But if you're prepared for a Zombie Apocalypse, you're prepared for anything up to and including one. So might as well have fun while prepping."

84 My shooting camouflage? Khakis, a button-down shirt, baseball cap and a tennis racket bag. I call it "Tactical Yuppie Pattern". Posted by: Taro Tsujimoto at January 12, 2014 11:12 AM (celt+) Just esthetically, if I buy something in camo, I prefer two of our local Texas camo patterns, Game Guard and Brush Country. I am a chick, and I just think they are prettier than real tree and the others, and more appropriate for our vegetation anyway.

87 Oedipus, I really like the extended mag with the Mannlicher stock. It gives it a great late-1800s military carbine look. I've always thought those were the neatest rifles:

88 @87 or, considering where we are after all, out of it.

Say, if you've run out of other things to do, if you ever want to make long-term enemies with Gurrl Gun-Bloggers, just ask that "What gun for wife" question. It brings out the worst in people. There is one, and only one answer: take the woman in question shooting. Let her try several different types. Show her what is available. Kind of like if you were dealing with, you know, a man. Then let her choose.

Sure it spoils the surprise, but, when you think of it, cars, houses and jewelry kind of work the same way. For those of you buying jewelry for men.

Scroll down to the bottom here to see what fancy maple on an M1 looks likehttp://dgrguns.com/4-stocks-extra-fancy-walnut-t1.htm Posted by: Steck It's definitely colored more like beech stocks I have on other manufacturer's weapons (Israeli FAL forearm and buttstock, Marlin 336...both of which I know are beech), but I've never noticed that kind of figure in beech. Of course, my other CZ (455) has the reddish stain/varnish on it from the factory, so no idea what the natural color of the wood is. Again, wood moron. My 455 was factory-new, this 550 was bought used, so no idea what has been done to the stock, if it was stripped, etc... In between posts, I've been looking into different CZ wood types. Seems they have alternated between American Walnut and Turkish Walnut at times, so maybe that accounts for the difference? Regardless, I'm happy with it, just curious, cuz I like to know these things.

90 I use a tennis bag for my AR as well. Took some closed cell foam and made an insert to protect everything. Been using it for about three years now. I can drop the bag on concrete and kick it around with no damage (not that I make a habit of it)

96 96 @73 A scout configured Enfield ?, Cool Posted by: Putter Ishapore 2A, at that. I'm a fan of .308, and consolidating calibers. It's since been reverted back to wood stock configuration, the new stock and mount sold to fund other purchases. Couldn't bring myself to cut the barrel down to get it into a true scout configuration. I like to tinker. I like wood. So many likes, so little money, lol. Looking through my other albums, I sure have gone through some firearms. I had forgotten about some of them, lol.

97 TT, you'll probably have to look at local packaging companies or dumpster dive in light industrial parks. I salvaged my foam from packaging material scraps at work. Cut with a SHARP thin knife and use a hot glue gun to assemble. Don't use super glue unless you have full MOPP gear. The fumes are brutal when it reacts with the plastic in the foam

When high school drop outs can make zip guns it's NOT that difficult.  I know gunsmiths that can manufacture anything you want.  Bonnie & Clyde armed themselvess with BARs (Browning Automatic Rifles).  They simply stoled them from the US government.  This is a good example why Barrack Obama is a moron.

102 Once I ran off a guy who had a restraining order from my neighbor by carrying a shotgun from my car to the apartment. Total lucky timing after shooting clay birds. He cruises by at two miles an hour, looks at me, floors it. Never saw him again. Same guy drunkenly once tried to open my (unhinged, sealed) skylight to get in next door. Their skylight would not have opened either. So drunk he missed by one skylight, and neither opened anyway, at 3 in the morning. Front door? Nah, he'd lost his key (pre-restraining order). I saved his life that night. Not sure he knows it. At three in the morning on my skylight, I still did not shoot at movement without IDing the dipshit. Had to go outside to do it thinking someone might be breaking in. The second time, another girl neighbor in apartments, I intentionally this time ran off a guy screaming he was going to kill her. Just had to go to the window with a 12 gauge after he threatened to kill us for yelling we were calling the cops in response to his screamed threats at her. Guns can save lives without a shot being fired. Abusive assholes prefer soft targets. So my question is, was merely holding a gun -not pointing at anyone- enough to get me in trouble in FL and I got lucky? Or, is/was pointing and threatening the legal issue?

I think you'll have a challenge in finding an A1 upper receiver and a pencil barrel. Check out Centerfire Systems for an almost-complete set of used A1 parts, which will get you the upper receiver but won't help you with the barrel.

Also, register with AR15.com. They have a whole Retro forum section you can ask questions of, and an Equipment Exchange where you might be able to source those hard-to-find parts.

93 "This is haute couture in our house."

When I went back to Los Angeles for the big Operation Gratitude Millionth Package event, I visited my old favorite coffee shop (M Street Coffee, Studio City). (OpGratitude, com)

Stuck on my training Stetson (big hat, no band), a Cedar Creek camo shirt worn open over a "We Don't Dial 911 in Texas T-shirt, jeans and boots.  Stuck a big ole wad of gum in one cheek and stood in line with a fake spit cup in one hand.  They freaked until they recognized me under the hat and 'stache.

109 108  Sportsman's Guide has been selling surplus M16A1 kits.  Original forearm and barrel.

Posted by: Judgmental White Person at January 12, 2014 09:06 AM (XO6WW)

110 Now, if your better half will be satisfied with just the triangle handguards and the A1 pistol grip, you might be good to go with an A2 receiver and heavy barrel. I don't know if the triangle handguards are compatible with the heavy barrel, but I suspect they may be.

Posted by: Taro Tsujimoto at January 12, 2014 09:07 AM (celt+)

111 110 - I think they're sold out of that. All they show is a kit with the quad rail forend and collapsible stock. Also, I don't think that previous kit (or this one) included a barrel.

D'oh - and it seems the Centerfire kit is actually not including the stock and handguard.

Posted by: Taro Tsujimoto at January 12, 2014 09:13 AM (celt+)

112 I was going to build myself a "looks like it from twenty feet away" XM-177 style carbine with an A1 receiver and a slip-over fake moderator. Got tired of waiting for A1 upper receivers to come back in stock, so I just bought an A2. Now it'll be a forty-feet-away build.

Meh. It'll still look salty.

Posted by: Taro Tsujimoto at January 12, 2014 09:17 AM (celt+)

113 Thanks for the tips guys. She does want it with the old triangle hand guards. I do seem to remember from my days as a unit armorer that the old handguards are compatible with the heavier a2 barrel. Since I'm stuck in CA this will be on an 80% lower to give the state a big FU on thier new long gun registration.
