7 Ah, the Sturmgewehr 44. It was pure coincidence that Hugo Schmeisser, head of the Haenel design group, was captured by the Russkies and pressed into service at their arms design bureau at roughly the same time they were developing the AK-47.

The two greatest Soviet triumphs, the AK-47 and Sputnik, sure had lots of Germans in the vicinity.

14 I'm very interested in safe recommendations. We have 4 kiddos so a gun safe is an absolute must before we bring a gun into the house. What I'm looking for: Something that is quick and easy to get into for us, but impossible for the kids/an intruder. And....Go!

16 As far as safes go, mine is a big Champion (I forgot the model number).  About 5.5' x 3'.  I went with electronic lock, de-humidifier, LED lighting kit, and had it bolted to the garage floor.  Just to be sure.

I even built a cabinet around it with doors and storage above for all my cleaning supplies.  When the garage door is open you can't tell there is a safe in there from the street.

Question:  Am I the only one who keeps their ammo in the safe?

18 Here's a little tip to help you get on paper faster when sighting in a new rifle. If it's a bolt action, or an AR, or any design that allows you to remove the bolt and look down the barrel from behind, you can boresight.

Put the rifle in a cradle. You can use a cardboard box that has notches cut out at opposite ends to hold the rifle at the front and back. Now pick out your target at the distance you're sighting for (let's say 100 yards). Adjust the cradle until you can see the target when you look down the barrel. Now look through your sights/scope and adjust until they're on the target as well. Go back and check that the bore is still centered on the target. When you're all matched up, you're boresighted. This should hopefully be enough to get you on paper with your first shots.

The beauty is that you can do this at home, sighting out of your window at a convenient target. Just make sure you're far enough away from the window that your neighbors won't be phoning the cops about the sniper across the street.

25 Question: Am I the only one who keeps their ammo in the safe?

Nope... in case of a fire you have to tell the firefighter to stand back and let it burn.

No sure what this will do for the insurance settlement...

27 RE safes - My old boss knows more but manual dial lock hands down. Been a long time but an S&G 6730 (I believe) or something comparable is a good choice. Make sure it has a good fire rating. If it can have that and be bolted to the floor so much the better. Don't remember ever working a theft where the bad guy drilled, or attempted to drill the safe but at least a 1/4 inch of hard plate between the lock and dial is still a good idea. Only locksmithed for 10 years and it's been about that long since I have so...

28 This time last week, I was at the range, finally putting fluffy to good use!  So fun!!!  97 rounds with my fluffy and also shot a couple rounds with friends' guns.  One a very sweet little automatic with all the action on the inside (so the outside was completely smooth) -- belonged to my friend's grandfather from, iirc, 1913.  Also another buddy had me shoot his AR.

33 There's a replica Stg '44 in .22LR that's been released recently that's kinda fun. It's a bit heavy for a .22 rifle in general, but it looks great and is a neat conversation piece. As for the gun cabinet question, you need to define what the goal is: protection from thieves, fire, kids, etc. If you really want protection, you need a gun safe, which is pretty expensive, but protects against everything. If you're more concerned about kids getting into the guns, you can get a simple gun cabinet...it's basically a locker setup for guns. It won't delay a determined burglar or fire, but it will keep youth out. I bought a two door model from Stack-On and was very pleased: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Stack-On-10-Gun-Double-Door-Security-Cabinet-Black/20753951 Added a small pistol cabinet on top that attaches, so plenty of storage space for rifle, pistols, ammo, and accessories!

38 @13

I just picked up a used Citadel 1911 A1 45ACP.  New, they are ~$550 from Academy.  I traded for mine, but it was for sale for $450.

Made in the Phillipines by the same company that make RIA pistols.  Solid steel frame and slide, 3" barrel.  Dang tight build for what it is.  If it's for carrying, you might find it a bit on the heavy side, but that works for you when you shoot it.

I got it for the truck and bedside.  I've got the full size Les Baer locked up tight in the safe.

39

Pro-Tip on gun safes.

If it's 59" tall, it's almost certainly made in China.  A full 60" will (more than likely) be a U.S. made product.

For Chinese safes, cut those fire ratings about in half.  We could get into raging physics wars on how the moisture content in gypsum works in a fire, but suffice to say that China isn't eggzaktly known for quality sheetrock.

And also, virtually every "gunsafe" sold, is at best, a Residential Security Container, falling well short of the UL listing requirements for a "safe" or "vault".  If you want to see what the good stuff really is, try Graffunder Safes.  Be ready to take out a 2nd mortgage, while you're at it.

I'm happy with my "Red-Head", 60"x30"x22" gunsafe (RSC, actually), the house brand of Bass Pro, actually manufactured by Granite Safes, in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.  For a few years, Granite went with a Chinese manufacturer, but persistent quality issues and a lack of production control....well, they're building 'em in the USA once again.  Oh, and all those Winchester brand safes you'd see at Sam's Club?   Made by Granite.

But seriously, do your homework DEEP into the safe industry.  You'll be sickened when learning that even many "Made in USA" safes are really just final-assembled here, from Made in China components.

This is an area where the learning curve will amaze you, and where some of the debates are epic, stubborn, opinionated, delve very deeply into science, physics and voodoo....  ideal stomping grounds for Morons and Moronettes!

43 the guns themselves are loaded with one in the pipe of course.

I'm not a big fan of that..the sound of racking one in the chamber can prevent a gunfight.  I've often thought an alarm that has the a recording of a 12 gauge slide being rack would be nice feature.  Sure as hell would wake me up faster than "OH my husband is home!"

46 Well, I had the SW MP15 Sport upper receiver, pistol grip and flash hider left over after cannibalizing it for two builds. So of course I had to rationalize building another upper. Mission accomplished. I picked up a lightweight ER Shaw barrel assembly in .223. I figured that since the receiver didn't have a FA or dust cover, it would be good for a lightweight build. The second rationalization is that my other two uppers are 5.56mm (1/7 and 1/9). So now I have a dedicated upper for .223.

Slapped a polymer railed handguard on it which will get white-painted ladder rail covers. Gonna paint the grip and a couple of mags white as well, just because I've always thought winter camo looks pretty salty. That's the third rationalization.

That should scratch the itch for awhile. Until I decide that for some reason I need a .300 Blackout upper.

http://beesafeusa.com/snapsafe/

You can take it apart, if you have to move (or to move it), in a half hour into pieces that one hearty operator can move without a crew. Delivered by regular package service, unlike the big names which require a dedicated truck at considerable cost. Assembled, it is as sturdy, airtight and fireproof as any safe, and has all the same features. Not especially expensive as safes go, and marketed by a multiple national champion.

Yes we have one. We like it very much.

Well, living in a deep rural area, I have serious doubts that one of those "RSC" safes would be of any use at all. Burglars are opportunistic bastards. Why leave a red flag out that says "Guns! Bust in here."? I simply make sure that my firearms are well hidden in the house, such that a quick scan by burglars wouldn't turn them up. There are plenty of blind cavities in most homes that could be made into hidey-holes for pistols and long guns by anyone with a little skill.

Would such a hiding place withstand a dedicated search by law enforcement? Probably not, but then, neither will a big-dollar gun safe. If LE confiscation is a concern, then maybe have a cheap-ass gun safe, with some cheap-ass guns for them to find, and the good stuff well-hidden, maybe even off-site.

77 The best gun safe is one that no one sees. I have a false door to a heated and constantly alarmed room. If I was really paranoid, I would have built a solid room with blocks filled with concrete. The problem with that? The assholes that build it will know where it is and why it is there.

100 One of the better ways to hide firearms (not protect them from fire) is the water heater trick. Get a water heater that has failed, cut out a space opposite of the controls, clean out the inside, paint, etc, stash a few guns in it and place it in a corner where one would expect a water heater. Run a couple of dummy pipes and wiring or vent pipe into a drop ceiling. People walk by water heaters.

112 You are not going to find a transferable MP-43/STG-44 for a measly $30k.

Start at $100k.

As for safes ... any of the more spendy ones are OK, Browning, Winchester brand safes, Liberty, Ft. Knox.

They can all be defeated in 5 minutes by a pro: Buy a duplicate safe, take the back cover off the door to examine the workings, make a template, and get a drill hammer out. Underwriter's Labs can defeat most safes in less than two minutes this way.

What is more important is reliability of the lock mechanism, and bolting it down to wall studs or a concrete basement floor so the safe cannot be stolen by some meth-head.

Get any safe with an S&G combination lock, or an S&G electronic lock. Make sure it is heavy enough so a crack-head with a hammer and chisel can't defeat it. Electronic locks are a bit more fragile than combination locks ( fragile as in requiring a locksmith to replace them if they fail ... they will still stay locked ). Combo are more robust, but take longer to open, which may be an issue in an emergency.

If you are going to buy a fireproof, be sure you store your ammo and reloading powder in a locker in a shed away from the house ... the local fire department will refuse to get near your home if ammo is cooking off.

I bought it a few months ago and the weather has been too shitty to shoot it more than a couple of times. The pluses are that it fits my hand well, it points well, recoil isn't bad at all, it groups well. Minuses are mag only holds six rounds, it seems picky about ammo, with several failures to feed with handloads that work fine in my 1911, and it shoots high and to the left. The rear sight can be adjusted for windage, but there doesn't seem to be any adjustment for elevation.

138 The main feature of a good safe is one that thieves can't carry off the whole thing and should fire rated for at least an hour at fire temps.

Also, never locate a safe any place where it could fall on someone if a fire started underneath. Your local firefighters will appreciate the consideration.

Old joke about the Swiss.

Before WWI, the Kaiser visited Switzerland on a state visit, and he was present at a Grand Review of the Swiss Army. While standing on the stage, he asked a Swiss general how many men he had under arms.

"Once we receive the mobilization order, we can have 1 million men under arms in 24 hours."

The Kaiser sneers "And what if I were to invade Switzerland with 5 million men?"

"Each of my boys fires 5 shots, and then we go home."

140 @120 Slide locks fail. Your personal say-so that your chamber is empty is also subject to error. This is why empty-chamber indicators are made.

Posted by: Richard McEnroe at February 02, 2014 09:35 AM (XO6WW)

145 My turn. From reading the previous comments, I assume that the intent of a safe is to store one's non-self-defense firearms; anything (and its magazines and ammo) intended for self-defense at 2:00AM will be stored not in the safe. Trying to open a safe, in response to a wakeup alarm from breaking glass or a door being forced open, strikes me as a very bad plan. A safe indicates something of value is present ... guns, jewelry, cash ... not a good advertisement in most places. Big safes require very public deliveries, by big trucks. A locksmith who had a used TL-30 jeweler's safe for sale mentioned these points to me. There is something to be said for a cabinet the size of the HF (or maybe the Lowe's or HD) "executive" unit. The door is thick enough so that it will slow down a couple of fools (a claw hammer won't do it), probably enough so that they will move on. But the units are cheap ... get 2, maybe 3 ... which one first? Mount them in inconvenient ways (in a corner; door hinge side is away from the walls, etc.) in inconvenient locations (the side of a coat closed) to make access with pry bars difficult. A fire-resistant box or 2, for car titles, wills, deeds, insurance, maybe a revolver, is still needed, and can be stored inside the larger units. WHen stored inside a fire-resistant cabinet, this does make the fire boxes much more likely to preserve their contents ... unaffected.

150 I keep two pistols with magazines loaded and nothing chambered; one in the dresser drawer next to my bed and one at the other end of the house in a drawer in my office. Spare rounds are in the ammo boxes in the closet. We don't have small kids at home, and everyone in my house can shoot either pistol, and the shotguns. When my granddaughter comes over, all weapons and ammo go in the closet on the top shelf except the personal CCW (that goes in the drawer), and she knows she is not allowed in our room. She'll learn respect for, and how to handle weapons (bladed and firearms) as soon as she is old enough to pick one up.

154 I just went through the research phase of gun safe buying and ended up going w/ a Cannon CA 23. It's a 24 gun safe w/ a UL rating for burglary and a 1 hr fire rating. Cost: $1300 including sales tax & installation. Check out this brand as it's a good value for the money.. Features vs price & all that. This came w/ the door pockets, LED lights, and a digital/mechanical combo lock. They call it the EMP Lock. The warranty covers natural flooding(unique), in addition to fire/burglary, and is transferable. Go for at least 1hr fire rating. 12 ga. Steel is fine for residential use and is what most safes you can afford are using. Professional safe crackers like the kind in the movies aren't going to be why you need a safe for 99.9% of the time so save your $10,000 for the currency of the future: cigarettes and ammunition. Check Craigslist in your area, you might get lucky or you'll at least discover some safe vendors in your are. Check out the gun shows. I got mine from a guy who sells safes @ the gun shoe and saved $300 from list price, which is all you'll find if you google these safes or buy them at a retail outlet.

I don't have that many guns. Mine has a 45 minute fire rating. Obviously longer is better. Which raises the question: How long does it take for a typical house to burn to the ground, in a worst-case scenario?

157 "How long does it take for a typical house to burn to the ground, in a worst-case scenario?"

I don't think there is such a thing as "typical" in that regard.
I have seen some places be fully involved by the time the FD responded.
In which case the FD is there only to contain the blaze and keep it from spreading.

The peak and average fire temperature are also variable. Further, the question of "How long is the fire allowed to burn?" comes into play. Will the fire be put out in 20 minutes (and was the safe within the fire?), or was it a 2-hour burn to the ground? Finally, the question of "what temperature will the contents of the safe reach?" must be considered. For a 20 minute fire, maybe, with good luck, the safe exterior never saw 1400 deg F. On a 2-hour burn, I'm guessing 2300 deg F. Paper ignites at 450 deg F. But steel will heat-treat/re-heat-treat/turn-to-scrap when it reaches about 300-350 deg F. Firing a firearm that has reached 350 deg F is a very bad idea IMO. I'd rather collect the insurance money and have to re-equip myself. I live in an apartment, so the risk of fire is slightly higher, and I feel the need to NOT advertise that I may or may not have guns and valuables. Therefore, I see a cabinet or 2, like the HF "Executive", for $300, as a good choice. If I had a house in a reasonable neighborhood, I'd spend much more money: 2-hours at 2300 deg F, and maybe even TL-20 break-in resistance.

160 rickl I wouldn't even begin to give an answer on that question. I was givin some good advice on placement though that does make sense. Place the safe in a corner of the house or along the outer wall versus in the middle or closer to the inside of the house. The heat will still be high but not as high as in the middle of the house.

162 Rock Island .45's an exact copy of the 1911 45 acp at cheaperthandirt for $399 (New in box). Made in the Philippines but I've heard good things about them. Just ordered one will let ya all know what I think when it arrives. Also ordered an Ishapore Enfield No 4 MK1 (with the wire wrapping so it didn't blow apart while launching grenades) from AIM surplus. All the British ones were gone. Can't believe how fast they sold out. It is WWII vintage and shootable, will let ya all know when it arrives. For you enfield fans out there, Aim Surplus has been getting small lots of various Enfields. If you go to the site and sign up and click 'notify me when avaliable" they will send you an email when they come in. They sell out so quick now, they don't even put them on the site, they send out the emails.

AIM Surplus seems like a nice outfit.  Have actually only bought ammo there, once, but nearly tapped into their Mosin-Nagants a few times.  Called them for a selection request and they were friendly and cooperative.  And during the last panic (2009-2010) their mainstream ammo prices and availability (9mm, 38, 45ACP) were usually far better than most - now I reload and so don't price/look for ammo much.

Didn't the "rebels" find some gubamint warehouse in Syria with 5,000 STG-44s new-in-box (actually, greased and in original German crates)?  Makes perfect sense, if true.  Soviet military foreign aid (like ours) often included WWII surplus in the 50s/60s; the USSR provided Syria under Assad pere a crap ton of conventional military aid starting after the Six Day War (I think after), no stretch to imagine them sending some of their vast stock of German booty from May 1945.   Story was that the rebels had no use for the things, as their caliber is not available for ammo.  Imagine several thousand new/like-new STG-44s like that.  Too bad (again, if true) some very enterprising wildman didn't get collector investors and mount an expedition to "rescue" the guns.  I'd guess just wads of cash would suffice, for the most part, to get the things, as they had no military use for the opposition.

Oh, and dead dead thread.  My name ain't willow, but I sub for her on occasion.

164 STG 44's in Syria. It would not surprise me. They have a crap load of Mauser broomhandle pistols over in China the military has been holding since the revolution. A lot them rusty (not stored correctly). But some enterprising young fella with cash, and an electrolysis tank could make a bundle. You would have to warehouse them in another country for at least 5 years to be able to duck the Clinton era ban on Chinese weapons import. But you could sell them straight up in Canada and some other countries.

165 "123 113 its been said that it can damage the slide stop
also if done with an empty chamber can damage the extractor and possibly the frame

Using the slide release on a 1911 to release the slide will damage the gun?  In particular the steel frame?

There are only two logical possibilities:

1)  This is an old wives' tale and untrue.

2) The Model 1911 .45 pistol is an outdated piece of crap antique and has about as much business being used for self defense in the 21st century as a muzzle loading cap and ball revolver or a matchlock arquebus, however much fun they might be to shoot at the range.

166 The Rock Island 1911s are a great value. Make sure to get the "tactical" models, as they have better sights (really, more easily replaced sights). The front sight on the "GI" model is crap, and replacement sights of the "staked" type are less common and less stable. You'll need to play around with ammo though. Mine works great with all ball ammo, but hollow-points are highly variable depending on brand/type.

167 All ammunition is being recalled, an NO, ammunition will not be replaced !  Thanks for your naivete, suckas.  Stalin, Hitler, Mao, Obama !
