Gun Thread (2-23-2014)
— andy

Happy 5.56mm day

Retired Liberal Wishcasts A New Constitution

I presume John Paul Stevens doesn't see a need to revisit lifetime judicial appointments, but he'd like to tweak the 2nd Amendment a bit. His version would read:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms when serving in the militia shall not be infringed.

I'm sure the left is oohing and ahhing over this, but Stevens' suggestion is pretty funny when you bump it up against the existing U.S. code.

(a) The militia of the United States consists of all able-bodied males at least 17 years of age and, except as provided in section 313 of title 32, under 45 years of age who are, or who have made a declaration of intention to become, citizens of the United States and of female citizens of the United States who are members of the National Guard.

(b) The classes of the militia are—
(1) the organized militia, which consists of the National Guard and the Naval Militia; and
(2) the unorganized militia, which consists of the members of the militia who are not members of the National Guard or the Naval Militia.

Looks like John Paul Stevens wants to disarm women who aren't in the National Guard, transgendered folk and oldsters to me. Teh H8R!!

Now about that lifetime appointment ...

Detective that claimed “we don’t have time for this” before killing 90-pound teen is indicted for voluntary manslaughter

These judge+jury+executioner incidents seem to be happening more often these days, but the cops always seem to get away with little or no punishment. There appears to be at least a slim chance for justice in this case.

Gun Of The Week - Answer

That's the Bren Ten, the gun the 10mm Auto cartridge was designed for. Its claim to fame was being the sidearm of Miami Vice's Sonny Crockett and was a hot commodity in the mid-1980s. I had one on order myself, but the company folded before it was delivered. Its return to production has long been rumored, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I followed the development and introduction of the Bren in the '80s, and made a firm commitment to avoid 'em like the plague.

Regardless of Col. Cooper's enthusiasm for the project, the thing was rushed through design and development, insufficiently tested, poorly produced and left a whole bunch of investors wondering where their money went.

I don't need a cool gun, don't need a sexy gun.  What I do need is a gun proven to function whenever needed, and in whatever environment might be present.

16 IIRC, the Bren Ten was born when Jeff Cooper noted that the then-new CZ-75 was the best auto pistol in the world, but for its cartridge (the 9mm, Cooper's "Europellet").

AND "There should be no "poorly-regulated Militias."" Otherwise, people would form "poorly-regulated Militias" and try to overthrow the Constitution. Which would be stupid, because the correct way to overthrow the Constitution is to become a lawyer/politician. Later.

24 "So, the smart gun bill won't pass (I hope), but how long till we see an executive order to that effect?"

After the midterms this fall is the "window of vulnerability".

Consider that Markey has an insanely safe seat. He'll be in it for life. He can propose this sorts of crazy things as red meat for his liberal constituency in MA (well, fresh tofu rather than red meat, but you get the idea).

Meanwhile, you have Hagan, Pryor, Landrieu, et al. absolutely shitting bricks in states that aren't monolithically liberal, and they are just terrified of this stuff and wish that every other Democrat would instantly STFU about it.

They've told Obama in particular to please stay away from their races and to please not take any more potentially controversial actions between now and Election Day. This has not sat too well with The Won -- he's a narcissist who can't stand to be anything other than adored -- but so far he is acquiescing, because he needs those seats to stay Democratic.

However, once the election this fall is over, that's the last time Obama will have to worry about moderating his stance. He of course will not be standing for re-election and none of his allies will be vulnerable to damage he causes before he himself leaves.

That, make no mistake, is when he will go "full Bulworth", as he puts it.

Remember the comment Obama made about how would have what he termed _more flexibility_ after 2012? And how he immediately began to demonstrate the same in 2013? He is a pol who understands the game clock. And he will have even more _flexibility_ once 2014 is finished.

Which underscores the absolutely central importance of taking away Democratic control of the Senate this fall. A GOP majority will certainly have to be dissuaded away from a bunch of stupid crap (e.g. amnesty), but there seems to be little appetite for intrusive new gun control even among the worst of the RINOs right now.

35 The Bren Ten was one of those brilliant ideas un-brilliantly executed. The faltering (and threatened-with-regulation) "low-production" not-exactly-3D-printed one-off machined guns process might bring them back - hopefully with one or two improvements. As for now, like Matebas, they're sexy collector's items and not much more. It is basically a CZ, so to get close you could get a 10mm EAA Witness... again, if you can find one (grumble). It's much easier to just order one new in most places - most stores won't stock them. One thing about the 10mm is a wider-than-average velocity spread between loads (because of the FBI downloading), so you may need to match your recoil spring with your loads. Some people have *real* problems with this because the hot loads have twice the energy of the mild loads.

I believe that Illinois requires that you have a copy of your FOID card on file with the vendor. Several other states like Connecticut and Massachusetts ban online ammo purchases, as well as certain cities (DC is definitely one of them). Check the shipping policies of your preferred vendor on their website. A copy of your regular photo ID is always required.

Some vendors will not ship to certain areas even though it's clearly legal to do so. An ongoing issue in some counties of CA is that many years back, a few vendors got the idea that shipping ammo there was illegal, and the vendors have been reluctant to revisit the issue, even though their competitors ship to those areas. No basis in law for that, but the vendors are sometimes playing it safe.

72 I like revisiting lifetime appointments for judges. The argument is that it is like tenure, that judges shouldn't be subject to politics in considering their rulings. Of course, they're all considering politics, if not the simple notion of the cocktail party or being respected by law professors. Shallow vanity has been a hallmark of the judiciary. And, unlike some college professors, they aren't hampered by that pesky scientific method. Besides all that, it shows that Stevens has no idea what the Second Amendment is for. It's explicitly not to arm a militia (in which Stevens clearly intends to mean the National Guard) but to arm the people, who constitute the militia in the sense that the founders meant it. Personally, I think gun control advocates are racist. Their real motivation is to keep guns out of the hands of minorities because they're afraid of them.

Isn't everybody who has ever filled out an ATF Form 4473 considered to be a member of  a ] well regulated militia?

Why won't the U.S. Department of Justice consider that box to be checked?

Done. And done.

91 83  .380, Federal Hydroshock = 860 fps. Liberty? 1379 fps.

9x19mm 115 grain ball = 1110 fps. Liberty? An honest 2028 fps average.

.45acp 230 grain (my own) = 750 fps. Liberty..... 1847 fps average over two 20 round strings. That gives a muzzle energy almost double a standard round.

106 They were forced into bankruptcy back in 1999. They are a UAW union shop, and the union threatened to call a strike if they installed any CNC machines. They have been priced out of the market on most of their models because of the increased cost of using actual machinists while the competition was using CNC and investment casting.

142 More:  At one point in time,Colt produced a MUCH wider array of firearms but because of union requirements that they NOT upgrade to newer machinery (newer machines, fewer machinists) they couldn't keep their prices in line with the price curve so they had to drop many of their lines. Look at a Colt Python. They haven't been made in over 14 years, but they command a phenomenal price on the open market because of their accuracy. Colt stopped making them because the cost of production using manual machining caused the price to rise out of control. Had they been able to install CNC machining and MIM casting for the parts, they would've been able to remain cost competitive.

Colt came out with a number of firearms to try and regain market share in the 90s, but their prices were always higher than S&W and MUCH higher than Ruger. Since they were still using older manufacturing techniques and equipment, their basic model quality didn't keep up either. They still have the most beautiful engraving and blueing of any manufacturer out there, but that adds to the cost of an already costly weapon. I've owned a number of Colts including 3 Pythons, and at least 3 1911s. The quality of construction has fallen while the prices have gone up. This at the same time that the competition has improved quality and kept down prices.

A CNC machined Iver Johnson 1911 wholesales for around half the price of a comparable Colt model, and has better quality. That's a HUGE problem for Colt. An STI Spartan sells for about $600 while a comparable Colt 1911 sells for over $900. The finish on the Spartan won't be as good as the one of the Colt, but the fit of the parts is better. I've fired a lot of firearms, but the quality of the finish has never effected the impact of the bullet. The fit of the parts are another story. The difference is that other companies are spending their money paying people to fit the parts together, versus simply making the parts initially.

BTW the Colt Precision ARs aren't even made by Colt. They're made by a contractor here in Texas.

146 It so happens that Sonny Crockett's backup piece was the AMT Backup in .45 ACP. I happen to own an AMT Backup .45 made in that era. Lots of owners complain because quality control was apparently uneven with AMT: some of the Backups were awesome shooters while others were FTF-prone paperweights. I guess I lucked out because mine is a sweetheart as a defensive piece, although not exactly a fun range pistol given its lack of sights and heavy DA trigger. Good thing I don't mind heavy DA triggers, I guess. I've been focusing on point-shooting, so lack of sights doesn't bother me, either. I'd love to own a Bren 10. Maybe because I was a young man in the 80's and it is part of that period. Besides, 10mm on the right platform is a marvelous weapon.

149 More from the comments:

Every mechanical device fails in extreme dust/sand conditions, like what we would see in a dust storm in the Middle East. Even our M500 breacher shotguns and M24's Sniper Systems could not physically chamber a cartridge.

What are these "better, newer weapon systems out there"?
SCAR-nope, 42 units broken within 2 weeks of testing by 3rd Ranger Battalion
416? Nope, too heavy, no noticeable improvement in reliability over SOPMOD Block II M4A1
Remington ACR? Colossal abortion
"Piston operated" AR15's? Nope...less reliable, heavier

Posted by: redclay at February 23, 2014 05:49 PM (9BagI) Disassemble the bolt, which seems trickier than it actually is. Use brake cleaner spray and spray the daylights out of it. Soak it in a bath of Hoppes solvent for awhile. Take it out, wipe it down, and lightly lubricate. Reassemble. Works for me. Haven't had any problems with my Mosins. However, it could be that those you fired still had cosmoline in the bolt, in which case you should disassemble and soak the bolt in kerosene or paint thinner or other really powerful solvent. Cleaning out cosmoline takes work.

I like the AR, and used to have a few before the tragic fishing expedition, but Mosin food runs less than .25 per round, even with shipping. The bolt on the Mosin can be a little rough. Just remember it was built for use in battle conditions by illiterate third world peasants. Think of it more like a farm tool than a modern firearm. You're not gonna break it, so go ahead and operate the bolt smartly. Buy one and a spam can. Even if you hate it, you're only out about $220 or so. And the Mosin can be resold for about what you paid for it.

Motor died, I went downstream then I hit the rapids, swamped, flipped, eventually washed up but lost everything. So I said screw it and loaded all my gunsmithing stuff in the storage. Damned if it wasn't broken into and all stolen. Don't know if I'll start again. Too heartbreaking to start over. Maybe I'll take up curling.

229 Maryland has a one a month law for pistols.
And prior to banning certain AR-15 types, they were regulated, and limited to one a month as well.

Interestingly though, Maryland also has a "Designated Firearm Collector" status as well. This allows a Designated Collector to purchase as often and as many as one wishes.

Now, as many of you have heard, Mrs VIA has been waiting since September 17th of last year for her first and only regulated firearm to clear paperwork.
It took nine days for Maryland to process the Designated Collector status that allows me to buy pistols by the bus full.

Go figure.

241 In Maryland, our betters decided that making standard capacity magazines illegal would make us,the Governors Subjects, safer.
So they passed a law making it illegal to sell, transfer or purchase a detachable magazine of greater than ten round capacity.

So this is how it works in the Free State.
It is not illegal to own a standard,or extended capacity magazine here.
Just to buy them.
If I wish,I can shoot 23 miles up into Pennsylvania and buy standard capacity magazines by the truckload.
I can buy 100rd magazines for an AR-15 in PA, and bring it back into the state.
All this law has done is make it not impossible, but simply inconvenient to procure standard capacity magazines.

It took from September 10th until a day or two before February 10th in another case I know about. I may look into Designated Collector status. For a friend, of course.

258 At the time the second amendment was written, private citizens owned warships and artillery. The Militia was meant to be a well armed free people that would be impossible for the federal or any state government to impose tyranny upon. It was thought that the militia should be far, far more powerful than any national military. Now the ruling class considers the only legitimate militia to be the national guard, which is truly backwards. The second amendment's clause on the militia is intended to mean all the free people who are not in the government's military should be well armed, because their being strong is necessary for them to remain free. Take that away, and freedom will go away too.

259 It is really a shame that so many of the original colonies have such a dim view of firearms. Its like an alternate reality where the US is taken over by a bunch of pussies. Two weeks ago oldest sister Fiona had coke and it was her birthday. Three year old got into it. V & husband Kevin are talking about it in last weeksÂ’ episode. V is expecting triplets. She is worried about how their kids will grow up. He said one will be this, one will be that & one will be elected president. V responded of the US? He said why not? TheyÂ’ve already elected a skinny half black muslim with the name of a towel headed dictator as president. It is much funnier if you heard him say it.

286 OT: From an anonymous source in the Justice Department: “As is stands today, the Constitution forbids a third term of course, but as any American knows, the Constitution is a living document which is meant to be altered as the nation sees fit and in time of great need. The fact that we have had 27 amendments, shows that it has been done many times in the past, so the idea of a third Obama term, though it would require leaping over what may appear to be insurmountable hurdles, is still quite possible if, in the best interest of all Americans, it is deemed necessary to prevent far Right Republicans from taking control of the Executive branch of government. This is something that the Obama administration would deem a threat to our democracy, thus requiring emergency measures.” http://tinyurl.com/k7bn6ct

Also, try Guncases dot com/hard-gun-cases.html

Bass Pro and Cabela's will be sources, and if you want something vintage, historic and of period, you can't beat Collector's Firearms in Houston, TX.  At the corner of Richmond (ampersand) Fondren, they've armaments going back to the 13th century.

A brief story about Collector's Firearms.  I'd brought Kim DuToit and his family to the store for their first visit, and introduced them to the owner, Mr. Mike Clark.  Mr. Clark, having known of Kim's website (it was still active then), gave us the grand tour.  And that is how I came to have the opportunity to hold, in my white-cotton-gloved hands, the incredibly engraved, gold inlaid and bas-relief wood carved Mauser 88 "Commission" rifle, formerly belonging to Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany.  No telling what that thing was worth, but I think it'd buy my house a time or three over.

I think I could burn up a sizeable part of a Powerball lottery jackpot at Collector's.  It's a "must see" for any Moron visiting Houston!

330 . Cochran, you were a gunny? omg! -------------- And that is how rumors start.... My fault. Peaches - I meant 'gunny', as in 'about guns'.

331 Not gunny but funny. Unfortunate book covers. http://tinyurl.com/nxbk9yc

332 oh, sorry, Nip, you are looking for a case for said gun.  when you said "gun cases," I misconstrued it to be something like "nut cases," thinking you were referring to the esteemed moron horde.  my bad . . .

333 Jim, what about display/gift cases for pistols? I'm looking for a wooden box type case with a glass cover, and a molded interior that would fit a 1911 type pistol. It would be for show/presentation. Do you know of any places that make these?

EC, I'd look for those on Gunbroker, as I see 'em there pretty frequently.  I'd bet Collector's in Houston has quite a few, too.  It would be worth your while to call, or send an email inquiry.  Their online market staff are very professional, responsive and cool to work with.

336 Justice Stevens might be surprised by the original from which the Second Amendment was taken, in perhaps a little over-compressed form:

<i>7. That the people have a right to bear arms for the defense of themselves and their own state, or the United States, or for the purpose of killing game; and no law shall be passed for disarming the people or any of them, unless for crimes committed, or real danger of public injury from individuals; and as standing armies in the time of peace are dangerous to liberty, they ought not to be kept up; and that the military shall be kept under strict subordination to and be governed by the civil powers.</i>

338 "The Americans had a target rifle, the Germans had a hunting rifle, and the British had a battle rifle!"

Now I think that is wishful thinking. While I don't have any, I have fired the M-1 carbine and its big bad brother the M-1 garand.

They ain't nothing to be trifled with.

That saying actually refers to the rifles of WWI. So they're talking about the '03 Springfield.

339 Excellent gun thread this week, thanks.

340 Thanks for the correction Mr. Taro. I just know what Dad told me. I see everyone has run off chasing the new thread smell. I'm gonna hang here. I have 2 Yugo M-57's to clean, a case of beer and nothing much better to do.

341 Thing is the Germans took their hunting rifle to WW2. I'd love to have a Springfield.. Don't know if they are allowed in the Militia though.

Posted by: freaked at February 23, 2014 04:41 PM (JdEZJ)

342 I bought a Springfield from CMP several years ago.  Don't know if they still have them, haven't checked in a while.

343 No they don't Bomber. Otherwise I'd have one. Got a great CMPM

347 CMP still has some good stuff? I need to check that out. I was hearttbroken when the Chump in Chief killed all the Korean garands and carbines from coming back in. Sure they were in rough shape no doubt..Lend, lease then rode hard and put away wet. But I would have liked one of those.

351 Judge if old guns could talk ... I've got one I'd love to hear the history of. M1922 MKII from 1933. Somebody took the rifle apart, blued everything, put on a Lyman 17a front sight and mounted it in an 03A3 stock. This little puppy will constantly shoot 1" groups at 100 yds. It was such an eye opener that I'm having CMP convert a 1928 03 with Lyman 48S rear and Lyman 17A XNB front sights mounted on a new barrel. Now that will definitely be a target rifle.

356 353 fd, that's the question. These 22LR rifles were made from 1922 to 1942 as training rifles. They were mounted in a sporter stock and made in 2 versions - military and NRA. Short of an Anschlutz they are the most accurate .22 you've ever seen. I'd love to know the history behind this one. What was the original configuration? Who had it converted? Who did the conversion? Why am I so lucky?

Posted by: Panhandler at February 23, 2014 05:36 PM (LqVNJ)

357 @ 352 Panhandler, that is a nice one. I only have a few .22 trainers. 2 Romanian M-69's A polish WZ 78, with heavy match type barrel , that has put many a squirrel and rabbit on the table. I wouldn't part with it for anything. And the Enfield No. 2 MK 4/1 .22 trainer. With the price of .22 ammo I have been shooting mosins, AK's and SKS's mostly. It ain't that much more price wise and lots more fun.

Posted by: Judge Roy Bean at February 23, 2014 06:15 PM (cCxiu)

358 358 Judge Roy, the fellow who sold me this M1922 has a son who decided he liked the Romanian rifle better so they put the 1922 up for sale, I've never seen let alone shot one so I'm happy with the 1922. Right now I'm bidding on a Lee Enfield Mk#3 22 that looks brand new.

359 "Do you know of any places that make these?"

I have seen some, always made by hand, in my experience.

Posted by: navybrat at February 23, 2014 06:48 PM (AW7Gr)

360 @ 358 Pahandler. Good luck on getting that .22 enfield trainer. They be rarer than hens teeth now. BTW Samco Global Arms have them, but they were converted from No. 2 MKIV .410 muskets by adding a barrel insert (sleeve). From what I understand the MKIV muskets were single shot affairs for Prison guards lest they be overwhelmed by the inmates and rifles siezed. At $595 I don't think they are worth it. Glad I got mine and am keeping my fingers crossed for you too!

361 Oh one more thing before I go (its bedtime here). Check out Family Firearms and Finishes. Talk to Todd. Google them. He is an 01 dealer and scours gun shows and gets the best picks from the big online dealers etc. He isn't cheap but will get you the best example of any difficult to locate gun you are looking for. He is as honest as the day is long. I just bought a tanfoglio semi auto 2 toned 9mm pistol from him (among other things). It has 'Mossad" and 2 stars of David on the slide. While I am not of the Jewish persuasion, I thought that would piss em off pretty good if I ever got back to working in the mideast! Tell him Lenny from Texas sent ya!
