Gun Thread (3-23-2014)
— andy

Georgia's 2A Bill

Score one for the home state, where the legislature just sent a sweeping liberalization of gun laws to the governor. Among other things, it would:

* Repeal the unnecessary and duplicative state-required license for a firearms dealer, instead requiring only a Federal Firearms License (FFL).

* Prohibit a ban on firearms in public housing, ensuring that the right to self-defense should not be infringed based on where one calls home.

* Remove the sweeping restrictions on legally carrying a firearm with a WCL in bars, leaving this decision to private property owners.

* Allow for churches to opt-in for legal carry with only a civil penalty of a $100 if a person happens to carry into a prohibited church unknowingly.

Full details at the link, but this is a very, very good development.

Andrew Branca at NRA Annual Meeting

Our friend Andrew Branca wanted me to let y'all know that he'll be speaking at the NRA Annual Meeting in Indianapolis next month.

I’ll be speaking on Stand-Your-Ground, the Castle Doctrine, and whatever else comes to mind as part of the “17th Annual National Firearms Law Seminar,” held on Friday, April 25.

If you're in the neighborhood, you probably want to check this out.

5 So yesterday, some girlfriends and I hosted a skeet shooting party for one friend's daughter and a few of her friends. This was out at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, where the nationals are held. Except when we got there, they had us shoot sporting clays instead of skeet. I had shot some skeet years ago and loved it, but never sporting clays. That was really fun, and I shot much better than I thought I would. A couple of the girls hadn't shot before, and you know how fun it is to take a new shooter and watch them enjoy blasting things to bits.

10 fun of the week is a bad sniper rifle. Barrel's not free floated (gas tube). Good to 200 yards, fine for a jihadi, not a precision rifle. It does look sexy, though. I'm certain I'll get pushback on this poat, but hey...I can take a punch.

23 i mean carry gun, of course.  and, thanks for the tip, Steck, I will check out the gunzilla.  i had a headache and general malaise all week, thought maybe a sinus infection, kinda flu-ish feeling.  perfume does the same thing to me, it's some kind of auto-immune response to the volatile chemicals.

Posted by: Peaches at March 23, 2014 12:08 PM (8lmkt)

24 I'd really like to get some trigger time on a PS90 (civilian version, which is what Jerry's actually shooting in the video - P90 is full auto).

By all accounts they (i) run like a charm (ii) are accurate (iii) have no recoil (iv) hold 50 rounds at a time and (v) are caveman easy to field strip and maintain.

The round's nothing special ballistically.  Still, I'd bet you could put a lot of 'em on target quickly, even with the semi-auto PS90.

If I owned one, I would feel a constant, gnawing temptation to submit to the BATFE hassle and put a proper P90 barrel on it as a registered SBR (short barreled rifle).

25 There are far more people who's views on guns go from anti to pro as the result of either being a crime victim or knowing one than the other way round. Way more. But you would not know it because the leftard media embargoes these stories. Virtually every person I know who carries a gun (myself included) has either been threatened or robbed or personally knows someone who has. I don't have any specific numbers on hand, but I think most people would be surprised at the number of folks who have either personally been robbed or are no more than one degree from someone who has. This omnipresent fear of crime is one of the major reasons why gun bans are such a loser of an issue. I say gun bans and not "gun control" because many of the people I know who have and carry guns everywhere support background checks. If the SC decides that the people have a right to carry guns outside their homes, even the leftwing enclaves in the big cities will fall in line.

If you guys are in Mass., well first of all my condolences.  Consider moving to a red or at least a purple state.  Here in America it's fun to be a gun owner.

But second of all, the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9mm is available in a Mass-compliant version.  It adds a stupid external safety which she can ignore.  That's a good carry pistol, similar in profile to the LC9, and quite fairly priced too.

37 One other thing about the PS90/P90: Not only is the gun pricey, but you might have to take out a HELOC to pay for ammo.  If I had a PS90 I would shoot the crap out of it.

5.7x28mm is fairly available online, starts around $0.50 / round.  Plus, FNH apparently tells people not to try to reload the brass.

A much better sniper rifle than the SVD, is just a Mosin-Nagant in the same chambering.  Doesn't look all tacti-cool, but a well set up example is a magnitude of order more accurate.

Pretty much the same ballistic neighborhood as the .30-'06, .308 and 8mm Mauser.

In that a proper Mosin sniper rifle is built on the '91/30 platform, the vaunted 7.62x54r "fireball", as related to the shorter M-44, is absent the former.

One is simply never inadequately armed with a Mosin.  At least, not in terms of range or energy delivered on target.

41 Aarrgghhhh. The MA Ruger LC9 thing really, really pisses me off. My little brother has one, and I like it a lot. I was thinking of getting one knew it was on the MA "Approved Firearms Roster" ... and then I ran into this bullshit: http://www.goal.org/handgunsales.html "Guns sold by dealers must have mechanisms that preclude an average five year old from operating the handgun, such as requiring multiple motions or a ten pound trigger pull;" Ruger fixed the hard trigger pull on the LC9 at some point and in doing so made it illegal to buy in MA because Marsha Marsha Marsha Coakley says so. I hate this fucking commie hellhole.

My problem with background checks is they ad cost and are completely useless in saving lives. Back in the early 60s people could buy guns with no background check and have them shipped through the mail to their house. Are we safer now? Most gun people support background checks because you look like a nut if you don't not because reality shows they are effective.

56 Way to go Idaho! BOISE, March 21, 2014 – On Thursday, Idaho Governor Butch Otter (R) signed a bill, which would effectively nullify future federal gun laws, by prohibiting state enforcement of any future federal act relating to personal firearms, a firearm accessories or ammunition. S1332 passed the house by a vote of 68-0 and the senate by a vote of 34-0. Alaska and Kansas have also passed similar laws. Erich Pratt, Director of Communications for Gun Owners of America, cheered the governor’s action. “By signing this nullification bill into law, Idaho has joined an elite class of states that are telling the feds to ‘get lost’ — especially when it comes to unconstitutional gun control infringements”. http://tinyurl.com/n5mlv3j

74 @70, that good pricing. Thanks! I will pass that along. Glad to see not everyone is gouging people. If I didn't have 10-12 crates already I would jump on that.

79 Just got back from the range with the Grumpy Grandma. She sent her first box of ammo down range with her new little friend. I think I may have created a new habit.

86 And for the current cost of an SVD, you can have 10 PSLs, or 3 Chinese Norinco NDM-86s.

87 Georgia Carry which I am a member of pushed these state law changes (and a few more unlisted here that affect positively affect criminal defense laws) through despite a less than helpful Georgia Senate and Lt. Gov. Both the Senate and the Lt. Gov are Repubs by the way that claim they are strong 2A advocates.  The Georgia House, however, is a great supporter of 2A.   Also, we did effectively lower the cost of permits by not requiring new fingerprinting at renewals.  Thus, the license for renewals went down substantially.  Licenses will also now be issued to military members from 18-21 with the appropriate military training.  BTW, Georgia allows both open and concealed carry but only with a permit.  You may have a gun at home or in your car without one as long as you can legally carry.

GCO has been successfully pushing our state's archaic gun laws in a positive direction since 2006.  NRA-ILA also came in late in the game to help.  It has been a step by step process with the anti's threatening blood in the streets with each change.  Needless to say, it hasn't happened.

88 Hey, for those of you interested in coming to my speech at the NRA Annual Meeting, it seems that registration is required. Just FYI. The link is here: http://www.nrafoundation.org/lawseminar.aspx Oh, and I just noticed for the first time, it's not free. Looks like it's $150 for the day. For what it's worth, none of that comes to me (other than my travel costs being covered). :-) Alternatively, just suggest a local pub and I'll be glad to meet up there afterwards and recount the highlights of my speech for no more than the cost of a Guinness (or three). :-) --Andrew, @LawSelfDefense

89 Some stores have the SSE guns already in stock, others will order them and convert for you. Most will even allow you to purchase out of state (gunbroker) and have it shipped to your FFL where they convert it. I did that for a shield and glock gen 4. Just watch out for the one handgun/30 day nonsense.
