Ok, what's this gun of the week? Hint: Confederate soldiers called it "that damned Yankee rifle that you load on Sunday and shoot all week".

Guns in the News: This was mentioned earlier this week, self defense with firearms on the rise in Detroit and the Police Chief approves.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig said at a press conference last week that in his 37-year career, heÂ’s never seen as many homeowners defending themselves by shooting intruders. Craig told The News in January he felt the crime rate could be lowered if more Â“good AmericansÂ” were armed, because he said criminals would think twice about attacking.
Â“It does appear more and more Detroiters are becoming empowered,Â” Craig said. Â“More and more Detroiters are getting sick of the violence. I know of no other place where IÂ’ve seen this number of justifiable homicides. ItÂ’s interesting that these incidents go across gender lines.Â”

He's very right and it's refreshing to see a police chief say so.

Last year's NHK "Taiga" historical drama series "Yae no Sakura" featured a Spencer rifle in the hands of the central character, a woman from a family of riflemen living through the Boshin War.

The incident occurred when Dallas County resident Kevin Mclaughlin entered Dollar General reportedly waving a pistol in the air, Huffman said. Mclaughlin then ushered a group of people inside the store into a break room.
Â“It appears that once the cashier got inside the break room, a customer that was walking into the break room shot the individual, the white male, with the pistol,Â” Huffman said. Â“There was only one shot fired and that shot struck the individual with the pistol causing the disturbance.Â”

The lesson for other states, courtesy of District Attorney Michael Jackson

In Alabama you have the right of self defense of yourself or of a third party. So when the perpetrator went in there with a gun, waving the gun, anybody in there had the right to use deadly force. So thatÂ’s what happened and he actually was a Good Samaritan in this situation.

62 41 As far as I am aware, there is a universal consensus that derringers are overpriced, overweight, under-capacity, inaccurate, and hard to shoot. Other than that they are great. You want something small? Get a Kel-Tec P-3AT (380 auto) or something similar. Want something tiny? Get a Kel-Tec P-32 or something similar.

The recoil was not unmanageable, and the round did a lot of damage, even from that short barrel. Accuracy, however, was terrible. Just out of handshake range, the gun would put 1 round in the target's hip and another over his shoulder.

If a goblin is trying to cram people into a room without an escape, he's looking to easily eliminate witnesses, e.g. fish in a barrel.

Same thing with being accosted on the street, NEVER get in the goblin's car or let him take you down a dark alley. Better to be shot on the street and get it over with quickly than suffer though hours/days of rape, torture and degradation before death.

I'm guessing cable modem.

"Channel bonding" lets the modem and the upstream provider figure out which of the channels available to you are the least congested and send the data on those channels. This is a feature of the newer cable modems that support the DOCSIS 3.0 standard. Depending on the model you bought, you could have anywhere between 4 and 8 downstream channels to choose from. Also, as the name "channel bonding" implies, the data can be sent on multiple channels simultaneously.

TL;DR, your internet connection should be faster, your new modem has more tubes.

78 Good afternoon, Morons!

I'm thinking about getting a new pistol. I'm not happy with the performance of mine (Walther PK 380) and I have yet to be able to rectify the issues (repeated fail to load issues, casings eject back into my face). Basically, I don't trust it in the one and only situation I plan on needing it for, which is self-protection. I also don't like the weight of it, finding it to be a bit too light for my personal taste.

So, what I'm looking for is something that is heavier (I like the weight of my husband's Beretta PX4 .40) but with a grip to fit my little hands. I don't need a compact weapon, don't have a CHL.

Any recs so I can narrow things down when I go looking?

I actually had a 1:16 replica of a Dahlgren black powder cannon. Never shot the thing- it sat on the hearth for years & years. Used a golf ball as a mold for projectiles..... when the house at 4101 Riverside got sold, it went with it....

81 I just bought my wife a Sand W airweight. She tried a semi but it was too fiddley. She once got her finger pinched by the bolt and that was it. Double action wheel guns rule. If you don't shoot one for a year you just pick it up and get to work.

83 DangerGirl: I'm partial to S+W revolvers, various automatics in 9 Makarov and Spanish guns like Astras. I also have large hands, I can break walnuts with my fingers and I am cheap and generally odd - so my picks may not suit you. It is going to be a choice between what you can shoot well, what you can handle, what feels good in your hands and what you can afford. If you can afford it, get a Sig. If you can't try a Smith. If you can handle it, get a FEG PA-63 in 9 makarov.
And get that CHL if you can at all swing it.

Too long and too hard of a pull on the double action and can be awkward. YMMV, and it's why I don't often comment on gun choices. I stepped on my back porch to plant some seeds, rake leaves, prep my new raised beds, etc. because of the elevation of my yard I'm higher up than one neighbor and can see down into their backyard. Our houses aren't too close but line of sight and all that, anyhoo, I hear young voices and glance over. Their teenage son has some friends over and one of them is in a tutu...did I mention they are all boys. I didn't laugh, I could tell they were waiting for a reaction. I think it was a joke thing or maybe a drama club thing since one of them had a camera, the parents are home so it can't be too crazy. They aren't really that strange in general. So, I'm filing this under Guns and Gardens... Fairy gardens are a thing now. What the hell am I talking about. I sound drunk, don't I?

You'll get "experts" on every blog telling you about this gun, that caliber, but it's just what fits You. might be a .50 desert eagle (gold!) or a .30 special or any one of hundreds of choices. ...it's like picking a good woman (or man, in your case). Takes time. Something natural, easy. You'll probably never have to use it, but if you do, you want it to go "bang" and the bad guy to stop being bad.

I saw the words "Making Brass" and it peaked my curiosity on what you were trying to do. So I did a search to see if people actually make their own brass and ran across somebody trying to do what you want to be able to do and they seemed to have a lot of good info. so you may have already found this. 110 Dangergirl, if you're looking for something heavier and slim, and you're not worried about concealability, check out a 1911 in .45. People call it a heavy kicker, but I find it's more of a steady shove than the snappy recoil of a 9mm (the .45 moves slower).

You can get good, reliable models for under $600. Remington makes a lot of crap, but their R1 1911 gets good reviews. It's a basic 1911, has nice big fixed sights, and there's a $75 rebate until May. Springfield's Mil-Spec is similar (not the GI model, though, it has crap sights).

You'll definitely want to try it first, though. Luckily, lot of folks have them, so you shouldn't have trouble finding somebody friendly who will let you put some rounds through it. Make sure you can rack the slide (it's easier if you thumb the hammer back first.)

If you look one over, remember it's bad form to drop the slide release on an empty chamber. Let the owner ease the slide forward.

116 DangerGirl, One of my daughters prefers revolvers and has a .38 special S ampersand Wesson Model 10 police trade in. The other likes autos and has a SIG 9mm. My wife fell in love with the 1911 .45 the first time she shot one. None of them are particularly big. Glocks are popular. While I would recommend getting a concealed carry license, the fact that you are not worried about concealibility or size gives you a lot of options. You could get a Desert Eagle or Broom Handle Mauser if you want.

122 Sven, While a .45 Broom Handle is cool, the 7.62X25mm is a pretty impressive cartridge. I sometimes wonder why the Chinese don't manufacture new production Broom Handle Mausers. In addition to the standard varieties, there would definitely also be a market for functional pistols equipped with optical sights and flash hiders to look like Han Solo's blaster.

125 Went out shooting last night for the first time in a very long time. Got to cuddle up to: a .460 Smith and Wesson revolver, an Uzi 9mm on full auto (for all of 3 rounds, when it jammed), and best of all a .50 Barrett sniper rifle. I also met Larry Correia, who was the range master for the military side of the range, and gave me instructions on handling the Barrett. Very cool night.
