Hmmmm... How about this...

Worst TV show for gun stuff - The Walking Dead. They reached their nadir when a character needed to commit suicide, and asked Rick for his revolver. He handed it to her and said, "The safety's on."

If that wasn't bad enough, the character closes the door, then a few seconds later we hear the sound of the suicide shot with Rick's revolver - followed by the sound of an empty case hitting the concrete floor.

Today is or was the largest day for long distance calls all year.

In the 60's, before anything but land lines, often you could not get a connection.

One summer I was in Paris, IL and tried to call my mom. No direct dial back then, had to go through an operator.

The operator said all the circuits were busy, but she would call me back when one opened and she had my mom on the line.

Had the most interesting time yesterday exercising my Ruger Single Six. Don't get to shoot that enough the last couple years.

Sweet sweet revolver. It was Dad's and he carried it everywhere. The man was deadly with it, I saw him hit 4 and 5 flat washers thrown in the air on many occasions.

29 22 That is a bit baffling. Most wouldn't miss more than once or twice in 10 at 300 barbarian range measurements(300 meters). At 50 yards at mop 4 without glass inserts I cant miss.

The whole reason I put up the question is that I'd remembered reading that the Russians were recently considering going back to 7.62x25 in a new, modern pistol design, specifically because of the body armor issue. I believe they ended up shelving the idea, but the Terminator question just kind of clicked.

39 Peaches, lotsa revolvers have a safety mechanism of some sort. Maybe a transfer bar, so you can load to capacity, partial cock (like my Ruger has)--even many of the bp revolvers have a safety feature.

46 I went to the county range this morning when it was just light enough to see my targets (spinning steal) at 25 and 100 yards. Made the one at 25 dance with my S&W 686 and the one at 100 with my Mauser. Came home, cleaned the guns, made my wife breakfast and then we took a long walk in the woods to enjoy the spring flowers. For her mom's day lunch we drove into town for barbecued ribs and several bottles of beer.

57 The missus watches "Dr. Pol" (on NatGeo Channel, I think). He's a veterinarian and naturalized citizen born in The Netherlands who practices in SW Lower Michigan. At the end of last night's episode, his son (also a veterinarian and in his father's practice) presented his mother with a brick of ammo and a handgun for Mothers Day, after which she loaded up and popped some rounds off the back deck of their house. Something you don't see happen in too many shows these days, eh?

Not so, the pop comes from water in the kernel converting to steam, all you need to do that is heat. Yes oil will accelerate the heat transfer, but you can easily pop with no oil.

78 OK, let's take a breath here and clear up some terms before I'm responsible for accidentally implanting misinformation.

Revolvers DO NOT have safeties. There may be a few oddballs out there that do (and the Python, AFAIK, is NOT one of them, except for a prototype that never made production), but as a rule, no. They're unnecessary.

Modern revolvers DO have inherent safety mechanisms to prevent accidental discharge when dropped or when the hammer is struck with a loaded chamber under it. This is not a SAFETY in the sense of a lever that you flick on or off (which I believe is referred to as a "positive safety").

True for much older designs, like Colt SAA "cowboy" revolvers. Modern transfer bars make that nearly impossible.

82 Just spent the afternoon putting some BB holes in a target with my son. His mom still thinks the BB gun is too dangerous. I suck using it in rifle mode, but I found I could get reasonable accuracy by holding it in a pistol stance.

103 I would think for a terminator situation a CZ-52 with the hotter loads, say Polish, would be the off-the-shelf solution. the CZ-52 has the roller bearings and is sturdier than the Tokarev. Try for enough damage on joints like back of the knees and hips to slow it down, and then go for the kill. If you want to go for extreme try a PPSh/PPS, but the CZ is more concealable and easier to tote to the corner store.

116 Thanks for the mothers day dedication. My mom gave me my first gun, for bird hunting, when I was 22. It was and still is a 20 ga Remington 1100LT. I also used to stand behind the ranch house door with that shotgun whenever my mom handed out food to passing illegals. Yes, we referred to them as wetbacks back then, but we also gave them food and water and work when they came through. Today's criminal class of illegal is far different. Mom wasn't afraid of them in those days, but after some bad experiences in college, I had learned not to trust any man I didn't know, especially since law enforcement could be hours away from the ranch. I HATE the Moms Demand Action group that considers themselves more moral than a mom like me who owns guns to protect her family. My son was in elementary school when Beslan happened, and that was the impetus for me to finally use a whole day to get my concealed handgun license.

118 94 New carry gun is a North American 22 mag revolver. Really like being able to drop the hammer into the notch between two cambers. Also a big step up in reliability from the 380 semiauto. I have a series 80 colt government model 380 auto, had it for many years, and when I choose to carry concealed its the one I choose. At first it had feeding problems with HPs but after putting about 200 rounds of ball ammo through it my little colt would feed any and all HPs. Its a matter of smoothing down the feed ramp. Colt no longer produces this model which is a real shame as its a great little pistol that you can carry with 7+1. If you have a 380 you should put hundreds of ball through it before expecting it to feed each and every time. Also, check your mags. Persistent feeding problems after breaking the gun in are usually a matter of problems with the mags. 22 mag out of a short barrel does not have the stopping power of a 380 ACP. Don't get me wrong, the 22 mag is a great rimfire rifle round, but in a hand gun it can not reach anywhere near its full potential. Bersa makes a good, inexpensive 380. A friend has one and he really likes. Again, he had to put about 2-300 rounds of ball through it before it functioned flawlessly with HPS.

My Dad just gave me his Govt Colt 1911. He got it through the NRA in the 60s for $14.00!

I checked the serial number to see when it was made. 1943 and was actually manufactured by Ithaca. It has the inspection mark, FJA, for Col Frank J. Atwood.

btw, CZ, to me, was always about motorcross bikes...

128 Gee, why no love for the .44 Mag? Here you all go googly over the CZ and while its nice its a kitty when it comes to the .44 in kinetic energy and in the end it is physics that determines how hard the round hits.

Same for the .45, lots of mass but no velocity. Sure, you have 1 or 2 more rounds in the stack but after I go empty the next gun out is a 9mm with 16 rounds.

It took me awhile to become reasonably accurate with it at 5-7 yards because of the very short sight radius, but I'm fairly confident I can hit center mass at short range while under stress, which is all I ask of a pocket gun. So yeah, the Black Widow .22 mag is a good little pistol--designed by Dick Casull, I believe. Can't go wrong there.
