More From The NRA Annual Meeting

John, Ben and I got together and did a special podcast episode on last week's NRA Annual Meeting.

Referenced:

So, So Stupid

This is as uninformed as the "gun tech" guy we talked to at the NRAAM (discussed on the podcast). They've constructed a straw man argument that the NRA is full of luddites that oppose all sorts of technological breakthroughs in "gun safety".

Meanwhile, companies have been making biometric gun safes for years. If the Wired folks weren't so busy sneering, they might've attended the NRA Annual Meeting and dropped by Gun Vault's booth.

5 So does the HCAR have a thing that goes up?

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at May 04, 2014 01:04 PM (/FZPk)

6 All I had left after cannibalizing my MP15 Sport for two other builds and another upper was the stripped upper receiver. So of course I had to buy a charging handle, bolt carrier group, Magpul forend, Troy Industries fixed rear sight, gas tube, delta pack, .308 flash hider and a .300 Blackout barrel assembly.

I mean, I had no choice.

Building AR's is like smoking crack. If this keeps up I'll be blowing truckers for blemished PSA lower receivers.

19 And am I the only person who thinks that a collapsible AR stock on anything but an AR looks like a prosthetic device? Posted by: Taro Tsujimoto at May 04, 2014 05:13 PM (4ckfx) Nope. Even worse is when AR collapsibles are added to rifles/shotguns that normally have angled stocks. Often they're just grafted on haphazardly at the same angle as the original stock. Causes all kinds of problems with the stock/buttplate angle and the sight line above the barrel.

21 Yay, guns!  I was over at the gun shop yesterday, getting the bff a gift certificate for his birthday on Tuesday.  Was window-shopping the automatic handguns.  Some of them are quite pricey!  They have a bunch used, though, for about 600 and under.  I kinda want one.

Posted by: Peaches at May 04, 2014 01:20 PM (8lmkt)

22 I don't understand the left's obsession with biometric gun locks. Is this thing indestructible? If not what makes it any more safe than a regular gun lock? It can only be opened by it's owner? So what, a gun lock can only be opened by the guy with a key. Or both can be opened with a hack saw. As for "biometic guns" What a load of shit, part of the appeal of a gun as a self defense weapon is that they're fairly simple mechanism that aren't overly prone to failure. Unneeded tech changes that.

23 tsrbike, you clearly misunderstand the thinking (or lack thereof) of the DemProg mind. The fact that the Tech might fail and cause a bitter clinger to die is a big plus for them. Not to mention the idea of a remote kill switch on such Tech makes them orgasm in their knickers.

There were all kinds -- S(ampersand)W, HK, Springfield Armory (?), Glocks (very pricey!), others that I was unfamiliar with.  Best course for me would be to cheese one off my friend (who promised it to me years ago and never delivered).  Not in any rush, good with fluffy for now, but cannot get .38 specials for love or money.  Blew a bunch of hollow-points at the range last month, but they really dirtied up the gun.

31 I don't understand the left's obsession with biometric gun locks. Posted by: tsrblke, PhD(c) (No Really!) at May 04, 2014 05:20 PM (HDwDg) Right now, the main thing they're after is the legal stuff associated with biometrics. Laws in several states trigger new bans on older guns once biometrics hit the market. Same thing with the microstamping thing. They don't give a rat's ass about its effectiveness, just that it triggers new gun bans that are already written in the law.

Have yet to ever find a need for an integral bipod on a weapon I want for portability and ease of employment in close quarters. I am not going to hunt elk with it and I am too used to firing prone supported by my elbow. That lower "barrel" appears to be the gas return, which looks very similar to the M-60 series system.

Like I said, not a gun topic, but pretty close.

49 #35, considering the HCAR is a derivative of the M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle, which precedes the overall dismal M60 by a couple decades....

The HCAR will be one of the rifles used by the good guys in Seth Anderson Bailey's third novel. Anyone who likes guns and violence would appreciate his work.

I was at the NRA convention as well, and if anyone made it to Marty Morgan's "Guns of Normandy" or "Guns of D-Day" presentations, I was at both, plus MAJ Plaster's "Guns of MACV-SOG." Marty and Mark are both good buddies of mine.

For me, it had three major highlights. One, finally meeting Aimpoint's babe Angela Jennings (Google her, you're welcome), getting my hands on an R51, and seeing LTC Grossman for the first time in twenty years. He was still MAJ Grossman when I knew him.

52 Fucking Courts: Court refuses trial by combat By David Sapsted12:01AM GMT 16 Dec 2002 A court has rejected a 60-year-old man's attempt to invoke the ancient right to trial by combat, rather than pay a £25 fine for a minor motoring offence. Leon Humphreys remained adamant yesterday that his right to fight a champion nominated by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) was still valid under European human rights legislation. He said it would have been a "reasonable" way to settle the matter. Magistrates sitting at Bury St Edmunds on Friday had disagreed and instead of accepting his offer to take on a clerk from Swansea with "samurai swords, Ghurka knives or heavy hammers", fined him £200 with £100 costs. Humphreys, an unemployed mechanic, was taken to court after refusing to pay the original £25 fixed penalty for failing to notify the DVLA that his Suzuki motorcycle was off the road. After entering a not guilty plea, he threw down his unconventional challenge. Humphreys, from Bury St Edmunds, said: "I was willing to fight a champion put up by the DVLA, but it would have been a fight to the death." http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1416262/Court-refuses-trial-by-combat.html

Peaches,

Three things:  1.  We all hope you can attend, too!  2.  Look up all the training tips and other info at Kathy Jackson's site "Cornered Cat"  http://www.corneredcat.com .  I fully endorse every bit of what she's got in there.  ESPECIALLY learn n' memorize The Four Rules.  3.  After you've "found" the pistol you want, shop for it on Gunbroker  http://www.gunbroker.com .  You might not end up buying via that site, and some (many) of their sellers won't do CA sales for obvious reasons.  But, studying the site will educate you as to the price/condition matrix on used guns.

Oh, and at The Arms Room, where the Hou MoMeet should commence.....has full auto goodies available for rent.  Turning money into noise, at 800 rounds per minute!

110 Of old family gear, I have a Remington Model 34 .22 that my Grandad bought used for $6 during the Depression. Also my Remington .22 bolt action I bought with my lawn mowing plunder. Dad did the negotiations and I would get maybe $4 for mowing a widder woman's acre. Made $164.00 one summer mowing every widow's lawn in Goodrich. I also still have my Bear recurve I bought in 1961. Longbow.

Concrete Girl...........that'd be a Husky built on a Mauser '98 pattern, but in civilian, rather than military details.  SWEET rifle.

If it doesn't shoot as well as you'd like, it's a cinch to get rebarelled and/or restocked..... the action itself though?  It'll last several lifetimes.

That rifle was made from some of the finest steel ever made on this planet.  Swedish Proof Tool Steel.  It's an heirloom, keep it and pass it down.

135 concrete - Tradewinds was the Husky importer. The rifle was made in Sweden, and I suspect is quite nice.

136 the wood crisscrossing is about 8 inches on both sides of the ? stock just below the sight and also towards the end after the trigger where you hold the gun after you've shot. one heckeva recoil :-)

Posted by: concrete girl at May 04, 2014 04:29 PM (1YgVg)

137 All 'Husky' marked Husqvarna rifles were imported by Tradewinds. These were modified 1600-series rifles specifically for import to the American market in the late 1960's - early 1970's. Should have a 98 Mauser-type action. Unfortunately, the Husky's dont pull the bucks that the other Husqvarna rifles might. Figure $300 or so. Husqvarna also manufactured rifles for Smith & Wesson, plus were imported by a short list of other companies - all now defunct.

143 Taro, I wouldn't call the R51 a clusterfuck yet. Let's let Big Green get some out on the street and see how they do.

Yeah, it's a weird design, an update of Pedersen's Model 51 in .380 from the 1930s, and a friend has two of those. Yes, it is possible to put it back together wrong. Protip- it's not a pistol you're going to rack up a really high round count with, so it's not going to have to be taken all the way down much. Wipe it down, pull a Boresnake through it, and call it good.

Me, I have big old meathook hands. I usually carry a 1911. But right now I don't have the coin to get a bobtail Commander like I really want, so I want something smallish in 9mm for shorts and T-shirt season down here in the South. I can't get my hands onto a Diamondback, Kel-Tec, or Kahr happily. My first choice is a Boberg, which is a Cadillac pocket pistol at a Caddy price, and my second choice is the R51. Fits my hand well, it's at a price point I can handle, and the trigger's not bad for what it is. 7+1 capacity. And with the swapped out palm-swell grip panels, it fit my hand considerably better than the standard one. One of the display guns at NRA had them fitted.

So I'm going to let the early adopters get theirs, see what reports trickle back in, and jump on one if it seems a good move.

144 A couple of years ago I bought three T53s from SOG for $94 each as a package deal. I was pretty disappointed with their appearance, one with a big pit on the receiver and another with a visible crack in the stock. I just kind of put them into the attic still in the cosmoline and left them but today I decided to strip and clean them and see how bad they really are. And not really that bad. All are shootable and disregarding The Pit, the metal is really quit good on all of them. Shiny bores and good rifling on two of them, and one with the black sewer pipe look that has been known to clean up with a bit of brass brushing. If I put the best metal with the best stock I'll have one good T53, an okay one, and a beater.

146 @144Toby, I like them ole T-53s and have several. They have real character. Price was right on em. Actions smooth because they have been used and broken in. I like my SKS's better though. I like them SKS's even better than my AK's.

Posted by: The Walking Dude at May 04, 2014 06:17 PM (kRQ2J)

147 I like them SKS's even better than my AK's. I love my Yugo 59/66. The only knock on it is the 10 round capacity. I didn't have an AK pattern weapon until I bought the PSL. I still do not have an AK47 or 74 but I might get one at some point. A buddy of mine just got one of those VZ58/2008s from AIM. He jonesing to go shoot it. Maybe next week we can go.

Posted by: toby928© at May 04, 2014 06:35 PM (QupBk)

148 @Toby147] I have thought about buying one of them VZ's. I have 11 SKS's . I tried to snag one from every country. 3 yugos (2 M59/66's and 1 M 59), 3 Chinese, a Romanian , a Russian, 2 Albanians among others. Still looking for the Polish , DDR and elusive NORK and Nam models. I recently purchased a SKS that was from the honor guard out of Croatia. It has this cool little Croatia coat of arms inset into the stock.

Posted by: The Walking Dude at May 04, 2014 06:50 PM (kRQ2J)

149 Oh BTW, If you ever are in the market for an AK buy a Yugo underfolder. I have 2. They are the Cadillac of AK's. You can fold it down and carry it under a duster jacket.
