Gun Thread: Sunday Evening Edition! [Weasel]
— Open Blogger

/images/snoopyscaled.jpg

Well howdy, y'all! It's Sunday and dang if that doesn't mean it's time for another installment of the good ol' Sunday evening Gun Thread! As I try to mention often, it is my pleasure to put this together each week. I am appreciative not only for the opportunity to do so provided by Ace, but I am especially grateful for all of you and the content you send which frankly makes this a hell of a lot more interesting than just listening to my b.s. for three hours. So kick off your shoes, put on your slippers and smoking jacket, and settle in for a few hours of fun and sanity in our rapidly unraveling world.

So how have you been? Doing any shooting, or are you sitting on your ammo supply? Did you stock up when the stocking was good or are you marshalling your ammo? Have you considered alternatives to range time, such as the at-home laser systems and other drills we've discussed? If not those things, what are you doing to maintain proficiency? What do you think you can or should be doing?

Also, I'm a little behind on my Gun Thread email correspondence. My apologies! I promise to try and get back to you all this coming week.

With that, let's see what we have below, shall we?

Well our pal and delightful 'ette Sharon (Willow's Apprentice) has officially become a gun nut! She has been shooting a number of times and it definitely sounds like she has the bug.

/images/sharon1041821scaled.jpg

Let's hear what Sharon has to say:

I bought my first gun. It is a sweet Rossi 22lr pump action with a wood stock and 18' barrel. You might wonder how I got here. It is an interesting story.

Back last August, I had just moved to Bethesda and excited about attending the NoVa MoMe. I couldn't wait to meet the wonderful Hordians who had virtually held my hand while I made the biggest move of my life. I asked about Ubering there and got an email from Weasel introducing me to JesseinDC who offered me a ride. This is the beginning. Then came Texas and the opportunity to actually hold a gun and some expert advice from Satrose and Eromero and others as well as fun and laughter and new like minded friends.

Jesse believes all women should learn to shoot and proceeded to back this up by inviting me to go shooting. We went to a range in VA with his friend Rick. Every time we went, he brought a bunch of different firearms and I got expert help figuring out what I needed to do to succeed which included wearing a patch on my left eye. One day, he put an old Rossi pump action rifle in my hands, showed me how to load it and put me in front of a bunch of metal targets, spaced at different intervals and many different sizes. I put the rifle to my shoulder and proceeded to hit everything I aimed at. All the other shooters could hear the pings as I hit the targets and were cheering me on. It is hard to describe how that made me feel, but I knew I wanted to own that type of rifle and Rossi had just reissued this pump action Gallery gun. I got to handle it at my first gun show a few weeks ago and ended up ordering it from Guns.com. It was cheaper than the show and they sent it to a local gun shop for me to pick up after I filled out the paperwork and they ran the background check.

I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet and I need to learn how to clean it but hoping to do that shortly. Ammunition is relatively cheap and available so another good reason to own a 22lr. Next thing is to figure out what kind of handgun I want to own, but in t he meantime, I'm going to have great fun shooting my new rifle.

As the saying goes "A handgun is only good til you can get to your rifle".

Here's a nice video review of the rifle:

Allow me to be the first to say congratulations, Sharon! JesseinDC is a great shooting buddy and mentor to have and it looks like you made a solid choice with the Rossi. Again, congratulations and I'm sure we all look forward to your first range report with the new rifle!

If you don't already have a .22lr, you should consider getting one. In fact, you should consider getting two, a handgun and a rifle. Ammo is both relatively inexpensive and availability is good, so you can practice very effectively for longer at a much lower cost. All the same good shooting techniques required in larger calibers are also needed when shooting a .22lr, so do not discount it as a valuable practice tool.

Next up our pal f'd shows what ammo prices looked like in the before time.

Found this in an old ammo stash. 38 Special - 13 cents per round. Don't know the vintage but pre Y2K I think.

/images/fd1041821scaled.jpg

And he goes on to show us some surplus tracer ammo.

Picked up a can of 200 tracer rounds from the 50's. Examples of the best and worst of the bunch in the pics.

/images/fd2041821scaled.jpg

I pulled the bullet from the ugliest one. Looked and smelled good. Now to try to set the night on fire.

/images/fd3041821scaled.jpg

Very nice f'd, please let us know how it shoots!

Next, we have a question on safety gear from our pal and delightful 'ette Gouverneur Morris.

Yesterday at the range, I got a hot brass caught just above my eyebrow under my plastic eye wear. Glad I had it on!

Is there any safety equipment that is particularly superior by brand or type? What kind of goggles do glasses wearers use? How about headphones? I have the noise canceling battery powered headphones and I like them even if I get really mussed flat hair, haha. As an 'ette, I know better than to wear low cut shirts to the range, but are there other recommendations? Anyone wear gloves using handguns or long guns? Just picking the brains of longtime shooters.

How about it, all you guys and gals? We've discussed Personal Protective Equipment, or PPE, before - what do you both use and recommend?

Next up, our pal Lame-R brings up an excellent point, referring to content from a few weeks ago.

I just saw A.H. Lloyd's good notes about cleaning after every use on the latest gun thread, and have my own little reason to add:

Invariably, while cleaning, I would find myself doing a sort of after-action review, which was not only enjoyable, time at the range makes me happy, but possibly even productive in helping me curb bad practices and reinforce good ones.

Excellent point, Lame-R! I encourage people to take notes on their range sessions and save their targets, and review them afterward. Anything that gave you trouble should be the first thing you concentrate on next time at the range. A great time to begin the after-action analysis & review is while you're cleaning your firearm!

Also from a few weeks ago, our pal GWB asked the following question and received a few answers. I thought I'd run this again in case anyone missed and would like to offer their suggestions.

OK, two questions for the horde:

Any recommendations for an inexpensive muzzle-loader?

And, how about an air rifle? Would you avoid the ones requiring a cylinder?

So how about it, guys and gals? Suggestions?

Here is a great video from The CMP on the Philippine Garand returns.

Hopefully our pal NZFrank will have a chance to snap up a few of these!

Mini-UZI vs. Glock 18 - what's not to like?

Free Targets!
Also repeating from last week are free printable targets courtesy of Pew Pew Tactical and sent to us by our pal redc1c4.

On the subject of targets, the official pre-printed sort are great and come in every imaginable style, but want to know what I use? Usually a plain piece of letter size paper with a dot drawn in Sharpie. If I remember to bring them, I will sometimes use 1' round stickers in various colors. Paper plates are another inexpensive alternative. When I am using steel, I just take a shot and use the impact as the aim point for the rest of the series. The point is, you do not have to use expensive pre-printed targets. One exception I suppose are the 'splatter' targets which make bullet impact easier to see at a distance. It is also a very good idea to take range notes and targets home for later study. Try it!

Link-O-Rama
I'm really very seriously not kidding around anymore. Buy Ammo.

30

I'm just sitting here looking at a (partial) 50 rd. box of CCI Velocitor, .22LR.  Ten of 'em have been fired by whoever had the box before me.

40gr. lead, copper plated hollowpoint.  Box proclaims 1435 fps. velocity.

We're all accustomed to 36gr. pills moving out like that, but for a 40 gr. round, that's just flat out screaming downrange.  Looks like I'm going to have to break out the CZ-452 Lux for a bit of a testing session.  Kind of the opposite end of the spectrum, I'd imagine, from the Remington 40 gr. Sub-Sonic rounds which could barely be heard to fire at the TxMoMeet.

Pity, I can't go shoot till the 29th, at soonest.  Damn 10 day quarantine.

I gots the 'vids, dammit.  The good news?  I'm locked-down in the Gun Room, with all the booze, guns, cigars and books.  Roughing it, I tellya!  Damn well roughing it!

32 I am in Florida bishes.

Looking at property. We go walking the agent grabs a little .40 for his carry piece. Never know what we might find he says.

Says to my SiL I have a couple of guns in the truck right now but if it was hunting season it would be 5 or 6.

He says people around here like their guns. Noted.

33 One of my solutions to the ammo problem is a budget line of ammo I'm producing here at worldwide headquarters. A couple of years ago I picked up #8 of surplus Russian powder and I recently came across some pulled 100gn 243's for a great price. Putting the two together will really help my powder supply. I'm probably the only one making 6mm ARC for less than 20 cents, excluding primers.

Even though it specifically banned tracer rounds on the liability waiver, some yute thought it would be fun to shoot tracer rounds at the indoor range I'm a member of. The shredded rubber that they were using to absorb the rounds caught fire. My range was closed for three months to repair the damage.

39 Muzzle loaders... I don't know the cheap ones.  There are so many forums re: just muzzleloaders.  I bought a Knight Long Range Hunter just after they went broke the first time, cause one day it was an $800 gun, and the next, it was a $400 gun.  It shoots better than I do.  Green Mountain barrel guaranteed accuracy to 200 yds. One 4th of July, we cut down a tree about 150 yds out. Air rifles.  All I know are springers, and they are squirrely (heh).  Follow through is more important on a springer than any other rifle I know, except maybe big bore rifles.  Deadly in the right hands... probably not mine.

43 Regarding the eyebrow burn, I have one simple suggestion: a baseball cap.

I always wear one when I go shooting.  Normally I prefer a hat with a brim for maximal shade, but when shooting, I want that extra forward cover (plus the ear protection fits over it better).

I can't tell you how many times brass has bounced off the visor.  I don't even flinch anymore.  It's just a thing.  I've also noticed that most (if not all) the "pro shooters" on youtube have baseball hats on when they do their drills.

52 Jim,
A good friend of mine in Blanco has it too right now. See if you can access a tank or 2 of oxygen to supplement with if you have trouble breathing or feel really run down. She has a lingering case going on 10 days now. She finally started taking HCQ on Friday and is starting to feel better but is really tired and worn down. I dropped off several canisters of "Boost Oxygen" since I couldn't source any canisters of medical O2. It's better than nothing in a pinch. I wish I could have found her a canister or 2 of O2 for her to breath.

Posted by: lin-duh at April 18, 2021 07:14 PM (UUBmN)

For .22 rifle glass, use the same premium stuff you would for a centerfire rifle, but do ensure that it has a parallax adjustment down to 25 yards.  Many "big rifle" scopes won't adjust down to under 50 yards.  Don't go cheap on scope or rings, ma'am.  Buy once, Cry once.

For .22 handguns?  Semi-auto, I don't think you can beat a Browning Buckmark UDX, with the flat-sided, forged and machined steel 6" barrel.  The versions with an aluminum barrel with a steel liner are..inferior.  But, the Buckmark has 1911 ergonomics, and what I think is the best trigger in the common-market .22 pistol world.  You'd have to go up to a Hammerli Free Pistol to do much better.

Conversely, you can NEVER go wrong with a S&W model 17 .22 revolver.  But it's going to cost you, dearly.

Other end of things?  Heritage Rough Rider .22 Single Action (cowboy gun).  Very often found at under $200, retail.  More straight up FUN that the law might allow.

Those are my $0.02 worth of opinionage.

55 Big announcement this week that got highlighted by Insty:  Remington's Arkansas ammo factory is now up and running at full capacity.  Statement from CEO said they had staffed it for 24/7 operation.
Prices were always going to spike, but having Remington's machinery idled made it a lot worse.  I don't think we'll ever get back to the Good Old Days, but things should get better.

57 Hooray, it is the gun thread!!! Thanks Weasel, and thanks for the kind words... I really DO think all women should shoot, and do my best to encourage it. Thanks Sharon also. She has learned quickly and well a sport (hobby?) that she didn't know before, and is working on spreading the word to others. GO SHARON!!! Air rifles...I have several older ones. 1 pump (Sheridan) 1 side cocking (Webley) and a fairly new china made Beeman break barrel. Due to where I live, I don't shoot them often but since none require a high pressure tank refill to shoot, it is easy to shoot them. I have several air pistols, most are co2, ie simple 12 gram co2 cartridges. For me anyway, this arrangement works fine

58 Congratulations to Sharon! Good job!

By the way, I scored some 45 acp, it was stocked, on the shelves, in Prescott, AZ. Only $50 a box! Such a deal! I did run across 45 acp as high as $89 a box, but, passed. I wasn't quite that desperate.

Now, for a range report: I have a rifle competition coming up, and made the two hour drive to a range that was set up for me to get adjustment data for my K31 out to 700 yards. Yep, I started my very first log book! And, after I was done, realized I might not be able to trust what I'd written down. But, it's a building block toward developing shooting data.

Thanks, Weasel, for starting my down this road!

64 Taking a few days off at the end of this week and heading to the farm.  I will probably break into the .45acp stash and send 50 or so downrange. The last time I pulled the trigger on the Commander was Labor Day weekend, just before my cardiac event. I figure I can afford to burn a box or two. Same with one of the AR platforms - haven't decided which one yet. And maybe the M1 carbine, and maybe the Garand, and . . .
Damn! It's too long since I've had any trigger time!

65 Jom is right (of course) about the Buckmark.  But tons of folks like the Ruger .22's. I used to carry a Ruger MKll when rabbit hunting.  If they were setting, they got the .22.  Running, the .410.

66 Yep, I loved the CMP Philippine return Garands. I picked up 4 cuz I onlty had a SA and a H&R in the collection. So I picked up a  IHC & a Winchester in 30-06 and 2 specials (also IHC and A Winchester) in 308. The Philippine returns were in rough shape so a lot of them were specials ( the rcvrs were original and rifles got reworked with spare GI and / or new parts, a new Criterion barrel  and new CMP stock). I'm hoping they make some M-1D specials so I can snag one of those because I don't have any M-1 snipers. Rumors are they may be coming.

I don't shoot .380 any longer and I have over 800 rounds of it.  That was the only center fire caliber I could tolerate for about six months after my surgery so I bought a metric crap ton of it including about 500 rounds of Hornady XTP ammo.

That stuff is going for $4.00-$5.00 a round right now.  I paid shmaybe 40 cents a round for it three years ago.  Got four sealed 125 round boxes of it.

71 Oddbob, I concur with Weasel, If you're shooting in PRS matches on the clock you definitely want FFP and probably the whole Christmas tree reticle routine. For me, shooting known distances, not on the clock and having several rifles to equip, it's not worth the extra $100 per scope for me. I like a plain SFP MOA reticle better too.

72 Jim SND, I am sorry to hear you have Covid. I hope your symptoms are mild. Will your doctor prescribe ivermectin? If so, get on it right away.
I recently had a very mild case of Covid, and on the day I got out of quarantine I woke up feeling extremely fatigued. I called my doctor and she prescribed Ivermectin, but after 3 days it wasn't healing and it turned out I had Covid pneumonia. I think if I had called her right away when I got my positive test and gotten on the ivermectin at that time, I wouldn't have gotten worse.
I'm perfectly recovered and fine and dandy now, by the way.

73 Gubs!  Pre-emptive early thanks to Weasel for this brief respite of sanity, and gun nuttery, amidst the swirling degradation.

For ears I use the Howard Leight muffs, the big un's for indoor and if anyone is using artillery (muzzle braked 338, etc) nearby.  Skinnier ones for most of the time, outdoors (I double up with plugs and the big muffs indoors).  Don't have the model numbers, but I picked them by NRR (the system used to rate noise-reduction) - I think they had the highest ratings on that scale when I bought them.

Midway had Walker's electronics on sale (maybe they still do) for a sweet price, but to be honest I've never noticed needing/wanting that kind (and I'm an RO at an outdoor range).  My hearing is excellent, so (so far) my hearing protection doesn't interfere with me hearing what I need to.  I do have a cheapie electronic set next to the bed, for the 1/1,000,000,000,000,000 contingency of home invasion and needing to empty brass indoors.

76 Unless you are buying used, probably the best value in a muzzleloader rifle is a traditional style from Traditions. They won't look like works of art but are reliable and accurate. They are the CVA of today.

If buying used, look for a Thompson/Center Renegade. Half stock, adjustable sights, and double set triggers. I've used one for over thirty years. Get one in fifty caliber for easy to find round ball.

If you want a revolver, look for a Pietta in 44 caliber on sale. Steel frames are preffered but the brass frame versions will be find if you keep the powder charges around 20 to 25 grains.

79 I picked up a .177 Ruger Air Hawk pellet gun, used, from a pawn shop for a good price this week.  Great for cheap practice, but too loud to use in close suburbs. Heavy, and well made, it is unfortunately made in the kingdom of the CCP Kung Flu.  Ammo scores as well, percussion caps, 200 of em, .22Mag, 1 box of 50 , 1 box of .380 for $27.99, and three boxes of 9mm.  I also picked up a crossbow cheap recently, and stocked up on bolts.  One way or the other, I will be shooting something......

I really like the Beretta Cheetah.  Some of the MiMorons have shot it.

That said, I don't like .22LR pistols for anything other than training because rimfire ammo is just so finicky.  For self defense I'd look at .25 auto (which was designed by Browning to have the same ballistic performance of 22LR fired through a rifle) or maybe .32 ACP.

Nice thing about .32 is that there are tons of cheap but good Euro guns available in the caliber.

Any recommendations for an inexpensive muzzle-loader?

It's hard to beat the cheapo $100 or so* Traditions .50 caliber starter kit that you can (could?) pick up at any big box store.  I've taken dozens of whitetail with one that I've had for decades.  Nothing fancy, but I have zero ethical questions with iron sights and 50-70 yard shots.  I'm sure others can take a deer at longer distances, but that's about where my old man eyes limit me.  I've become partial to the sabot style of bullet, too.

And if you can find them in stock the little pre-measured powder tablets are the way to go.

*  Enough time has passed that it's probably closer to $200 by now, I guess.

Posted by: ck at April 18, 2021 07:30 PM (iBg56)

91 Have always worn a baseball cap, for brass, when shooting.  Have one anyway for sun, outdoors, so no big deal.   Crew neck shirt, though that's not as big a deal for me or men as it is for the other gender (cue amusing female hot-brass-down-the-shirt anecdotes).

Posted by: rhomboid at April 18, 2021 07:31 PM (OTzUX)

92 For brass protection at the range a ball cap will help, but I've had .22LR shoot the gap and land on my eyebrow.  Good test of your ability to remain cool under pressure.
For the ladies, it's important to have a bandanna (the ever-indulgent wife keeps two in her range bag so she can loan one out as needed).  Tie it around your neck cowboy style and it will cover any neckline gap.

94 Range time this week was spent getting my folks introduced to their new firearms. Both of my parents are in their 80s and they can't properly pull the triggers on their .38 Specials. Took a few magazines but they both were putting rounds in a 4 inch circle at 5 yards pretty quickly.  My practice was abbreviated - warm up, work on presentation on a single shot, then a double.  Also got some dry fire practice with my rifle and practicing wind calls from mirage. Much easier on the scope now that I have it dialed. Had to change stocks on my rifle to one that would allow vertical adjustment of the butt plate to get there.

Basic "ball" ammo is much cheaper and easier to come by.  Everything is hit or miss.  The truck rolls in and hey!  You win three boxes of almost reasonable ammo!

103 I'm actually quite deficient in 22LR platforms.  Just the Single Six, and the S&W M&P 22 pistol (both of which I highly recommend for the single-action revolved, and semi-auto plastic pistol categories, respectively).

Have come close to buying a CZ 452 and its successor platform, or the Polish training rifle (patterned on the Mosin-Nagant platform), just recently hemmed/hawed/didn't pursue a local private sale of a Kimber USG training rifle (my brother will scorch me for that).

If I shot more I'd probably have more 22s.

104 I have noticed that locally, ammo is getting restocked.  I saw 45 ACP for 27.99 a box, 9mm for 22.99 a box, and .380 for 27.99.  Limits were one per box per person per day.  .22lr was 10.00 per 50.  I went home and changed shirts several times........and went back...( just kidding, but I thought about it......)  .223/.556 was there, too, but I did not price it.  12 Ga slugs and buckshot also.

109 Concur with Jim above in re the Heritage Rough Rider; they are inexpensive and ridiculously fun to shoot. You can also get a cylinder for them in 22WMR, the larger cartridge makes the Rough Rider a lot easier to load.
For semi-auto, check out the Phoenix Arms HP-22.  The are dirt cheap; you used to be able to get their "range package" (the pistol with it's standard 2" barrel, the 5" "target" barrel, a couple of mags, and a case) for less than $200

113 Imagine it's a separate facility, so it won't matter, but the Remington factory restart would really make an impact if it included primers.  I read that the corporate turbulence had taken their primer production off-line, with predictable consequences.

I lived through the 2013 panic, and I think the prices of both ammo and components right now are a bit higher (with components there's usually just nothing available at all in the commercial channel).

Have been musing about selling a can or two of surplus 7.62X54R from my vast stockpile.  Doubt I'll ever get around to shooting it all.  And the mark-up from my purchase price would be dizzying.

121 Starting July 1st, the great state of Iowa no longer has the requirement to obtain a concealed carry permit for handguns. Nor obtain a "permit to purchase", if I'm reading it right. Everything else remains, including (federal) NICS background check. Information on the details is scarce. News orgs are useless. For example, does this mean open carry is also now lawful? I would assume so, by definition... but ... I don't know. I think (generally) open carry is ill-advised, or even dumb... but .. I would like to know what the deal is. How about knives? The 2nd Amendment is about Arms, it doesn't specifically mention guns as such. Can I carry a 5" folder now? Or a Buck sheath knife, without invoking the ire of Karen? It is nice not to have to worry about being a crook, just wanting to be able to secure personal defence.

I bought an air rifle. It's a Crossman pump. Honestly, I bought it partly because it reminded me of my dad's, with which I grew up shooting. This one is *very* hard to break open.
Unfortunately, I discovered when it arrived that it's made in f***in' China. A disappointment, that. But I do have an air rifle now. And it came with a cheapo scope, so cool. (It's the only scope I own at this point.)

I'm also working on some lights for a couple of my weapons. I noticed that AKs don't have much of any way to add gewgaws like the AR. No chainsaw bayonets for AKs.

Other end of things?  Heritage Rough Rider .22 Single Action (cowboy gun).  Very often found at under $200, retail.  More straight up FUN that the law might allow.

Uberti is another one to consider, although I have no personal experience with the factory .22.  I *do* have personal experience with their Single Action Army clone (Cattleman, $185 new) with a .22 adaptor in it, and it has been outstanding.

That pistol in long Colt always pisses off a dear friend of mine who paid about $1400 or so for an authentic Colt.  I always have to remind him I've got a $200 piece of junk and he's got an authentic Colt, but he always reminds me that my $200 piece of junk outshoots his fancy Colt whenever we take them out together.

130 Muzzleloaders: as in most things in real life, you generally get what you pay for. I'm a long time Thompson Center fan. Which ever muzzleloader you get I strongly advise using sabots and bullets. The ever popular Power b___ts are easy to load but, have very little bearing surface. A longer saboted bullet has much more surface in contact with the twist of the barrel. Also in very cold weather PowerB__lts can actually get cold enough for the bullet sprue to seperate from the small belt at the rear the bullet and the bullet itself can fall out of the barrel, leaving you with a blank. Ask me how I know this.

132 Walking Dude, I haven't kept track, didn't know the Philippine return M1s were already moving through CMP.  I've got 2 HRAs I'm happy with as my shooters, was hoping to get a service grade special, but didn't move fast enough (they used to be cheaper, and as I recall the receivers were not pitted).  We'll see.

One my M1s has a rear vertical sight issue (aperture slips down during firing) and the other one needs the front sight moves a tiny bit to the right (but screw is frozen - waiting til I do one of the infrequent total disassemblies to use Kroil on it and try to break it).

But they work fine overall, and I have some key spare parts (all USGI) for them.

I take the opposite view: by having diversity of calibers odds are something will pop up and the price won't be half bad.

One of the last calibers to run out was .32 and I loaded up on it while it was in stock.  Fun to shoot, love the Euroguns that run it.

Hitting the gun shows have been fun because people are clearly cleaning out their sock drawers and dumping 20-year-old 7.65mm Browning for *twice* what they paid for it.  Since they paid $10, it's not a bad deal.

I'm really tempted by some of the oddball prices.  .32 S&W Long is calling me because the weapons that use it are so cheap.

Friend told me today he shot an Arex Rex Zero.  I had no idea what that was until I looked it up on the interwebs.  Apparently a Slovenia company that cloned the P226.

Interesting.  Thanks for this.  The P226 is one of my favorite pistols, and a fine, easy shooting gun.  I'll keep my eyes out for one of these.

141 Hi, just learned of the blog!  So first post, we will see if I run into technical quagmires.  My husband and I both shoot, he reloads...took 15 years off to do other hobbies. Started shooting/reloading again in October.  So we missed stocking up at cheap prices.  But did buy lots of reloading components plus 22LR ammo, at what we thought were crazy high prices, in Nov/Dec.   and now we are back shooting .  Our current paranoia is that biden et al will stop internet sales of ammo.  Any thoughts on that?   Obama stopped internet sales of tobacco with just his pen.

142 Hi Everybody!
It was a lot of fun putting it all in writing, but I am  so thankful I found this place.
Jesse, I shot a Ruger 22 I think on our first trip to the range. It was a pretty comfortable fit as I recall and maybe something for Lin-Duh to consider. If you could  post the details. Obviously, I have no idea. Also, this site, Guns.com has really interesting articles. Sent me one the other day about a new Glock 22 that they thought was pretty good. Reviews and other info at the site. My son thought I was making a joke when I told him I ordered the rifle from  Guns.com. Wonder how they managed to secure that name.

Bluebell & Lin-Duh, greetings & thanks.  Just got the official diagnosis a few hours ago.  Nothing more than a 99.2 fever, mild, scratchy cough and muscle aches.

Food still tastes good, and the sniffer works just fine, too.

At this moment, I don't have a Covid doc., but there is one at UTMB (medical teaching college, Galveston) who IS a strong HCQ advocate.  I'll get what I need, there.  My regular MD up in League City isn't a fan of HCQ, being more of the "conventional thinking" herd.  He's a good doc for GP and blood pressure stuff, but I won't be seeing him for Covid treatment.

Right now, I feel at about 96% Good to Go, but I know better than to lack diligence where this is concerned.

Which is why I already have the soldering iron plugged in and preheated.  Hot Iron, bay bee!

I'd second the vitamins and minerals...and I'd recommend picking up a finger pulse oximeter (from anywhere, but Amazon is the easiest place to purchase).  What will kill you is not realizing your O2 saturation is too low til it's too late.  It's also a great tool to know if you feel bad, but can stay home or you feel good, but you have to get help (aka - O2 saturation drop isn't normally noticeable til it's too late)...

I'll be sending thoughts and prayers your way that you stay in Phase 1 and get well, and never get to any Phase 2 of the disease...

Two idiots in a Tesla, with no one behind the wheel -- one man in the passenger seat, another in the back seat, crashed into a tree at high speed. Vehicle burned to a crisp, killing both idiots.
It took firemen 4 hours and 32,000 gallons of water to get the fire out. The damned batteries, which are quite dangerous, kept reigniting on them. They had to call Tesla for advise on how to put the battery fire out. No details on what, if anything, Tesla advised, other than MOAR WATER.

The older revolvers offer some incredible bargains.  Younger crowd doesn't much care for them, but you can find some in excellent condition going for grocery money.  The ammo is a little trickier, but like I said, at shows you'll see battered old boxes fished out of someone's closet that are still good to go.

170 I had a double take looking at that vintage Georgia Arms. I have about 500 rounds from them that I bought for $18 per 50 maybe in 2009 or thereabouts. It had gone up a lot. It's "Cowboy" ammo, round nose flat point low velocity stuff. I have a box of .45 Colt in the same config from Winchester. It's now trending close to $100 a box at times. Same with .45-70 Gov't, it's spendy when ya find it. I bought many calibers for guns I don't own, as it made sense at the time. Where I failed to anticipate, that common calibers like 9mm or .38 spl would unobtanium or stupid expensive, or both. .30-06 is $2 per or near enough. .22 LR got stupid. I did purchase a "base" load, anticipating it would disappear completely someday, for whatever reason.

187 When you buy a .22LR firearm, make sure you have some idea of what kind of ammo you can use.  I have a pistol that ONLY feeds CCI Minimag.  I have a rifle that feeds almost anything but CCI and Federal work better.
And .22LR is anything but cheap these days.  The pre-panic prices were $8.00 for a brick of 100.  Now, I can't find it locally, and online prices are $25.00 for 100 rounds plus I have to pay shipping which is often another $25.00.  So you pay for 5 boxes and get 4!
I've been shooting a pellet gun for practice and doing routine maintenance and looking for a few spare parts.
Be safe and practice where and how you can.

I have a Model 617 "kit gun", which is an aluminum-frame-and-cylinder version of the 17 with a 3" barrel and real sights (fiber-optic green front and adjustable rear), yet it only weighs 11oz or so. It's only a bit larger than a "snubbie" but a lot more accurate, and it's as reliable as a rimfire handgun could be. As a "J-frame" there are hundreds of aftermarket grips (even lasergrips) and holsters out there. I bought it right when it came out, 15 years or so ago, and haven't regretted it once.

200 RI Red, sure do. My youngest daughter lives with her college roommate. Her roommate came down with it, but her only symptom was loss of taste, and it took her a day or two to figure it out. Meanwhile my daughter came over for dinner before her roommate figured it out, and then it was like dominoes falling. My son and I got it first, then my daughter who lives with us got it. My husband never got it but that's probably because as soon as we knew we had been exposed I started sleeping in the spare room, just in case.

204 It isn't common knowledge, but sunlight and Vitamin D absorption/production only works about 6 months out of the year in North America. It isn't simply a matter of people isually being indoors in the winter, it wouldn't matter if you're sunning yourself for 8 hours a day in January, the issue is the angle of the sun and the atmosphere. It isn't possible to get enough sunlight to help.

210 Here is the relevant section from Tesla's Emergency Response Guide:
USE WATER TO FIGHT A HIGH VOLTAGE BATTERY FIRE. If the battery catches fire, is exposed to high heat, or is generating heat or gases, use large amounts of water to cool the battery. It can take approximately 3,000 gallons (11,356 liters) of water, applied directly to the battery, to fully extinguish and cool down a battery fire; always establish or request an additional water supply. If water is not immediately available, use dry chemicals, CO2, foam, or another typical fire-extinguishing agent to fight the fire until water is available. Apply water directly to the battery. If safety permits, lift or tilt the vehicle for more direct access to the battery. Apply water inside the battery ONLY if a natural opening (such as a vent or opening from a collision) already exists. Do not open the battery for the purpose of cooling it.

Last one (So far) I have turned Sharon onto is a S and W 422, with a 6" barrel.I like all of them.  I also have a clone High Standard that I also have a thing for... 213 Interesting info on older ammo. What do you think would fit a H&R 632?

Posted by: OrangeEnt at April 18, 2021 08:02 PM (7bRMQ)
---
Revolvers are interesting because they have the ability to chamber all sorts of stuff that may or may not be good for them.

Take the .32 ACP for example.  It's semi-rimmed, so it should fit into any revolver chambered for .32 caliber.

BUT it has much higher pressure than what those revolvers were built to accept.  You can literally blow up the damn gun.  Lots of those older revolvers were originally built for black powder loads and when smokeless became the thing, they simply kept making ammo at the old pressures. The interwebs say that the 632 was built for S&W .32 Long which means that it can also handle .32 S&W short.

BUT the key is to do the research and see what the pressure of those rounds are.  After WW I, a lot of British Webley's were "shaved" to accept .45 ACP which they are NOT able to handle.  Pressure is too high.

216 Addendum to comment 80. The brass frame Pietta revolvers are the 1851 Colt style. I have never shot an in-line ML and have no interest in them. Love the traditional style and always have. No bullets, no sabot and other stuff. Just round ball loads. I generally suggest people start with percussion BP guns because they are a bit more forgiving to use. I prefer flintlocks. Also, percussion cap guns can use Pyrodex which is easier to find and more widely available than real black powder. I only use real black powder these days but I get it in 25 pound bulk sales.

220 Range report, part une.  Duty day last week, overall, traffic is pretty much back to "normal" pre-panic, pre-National Totalitarian Racist Street Festival, pre-"pandemic" levels.

Most of the people on the main range seem to reload, and I keep meaning to ask people up on one of the handgun ranges how they're getting/affording their ammo these days.

Another RO had a dueling tree target, but not steel - the paddles are this self-healing plasticy stuff.  The "frame" is just 2x4s (so, replaceable as they get shot up ..... if you can afford it now!).  Very interesting.  Our range rule book has nothing on such targets, so request has gone up the chain to develop SOP and rules.

No particularly unusual gunz to report.  But one thing - another day on which there were two distance rifle shooters with very impressive set-ups.  Last month it was a guy with some kind of "sonic" system that reported, via wi-fi, his bullet impact points instantly back to his tablet.  He had a LabRadar chrono on the other side of him.  So he just got up on his elbows, checked to the left, checked to the right, and instantly had his velocities and impact points.  This month, guy had some kind of camera-based system that reported his hits back to the line.  Good thing I am not a distance or precision shooter - I think there is a theoretically infinite amount of $$$ that can be poured down the toys and gadgets if you have that form of the disease.

Yes, but for us both, honestly.  I approach hunting in a fairly bittersweet way and have almost given it up a few times after watching animals teaching their young and the little ones playing.  I'm not giving up meat, though, and I still do it partly for the tradition and partly to remind myself that something's life has to be sacrificed so that my family's does not.  The least I can do is try to make it quick.

Way too many people think meat just grows in the grocery store in clean little styrofoam packages.  I don't want to ever take it for granted.

239 Range report, parte deux.

Finally got the boss to the range and it appears she likes the S&W Model 60 (snub-nose 357/38 revolver).  She shot it well, said she enjoyed it.  It has a very effective CrimsonTrace laser grip on it, which I have yet to demo for her in the dark.  Guy I bought it from dialed it in perfectly.

So even as we virtually speak, I'm plotting a new load to work up for her practice, something between the light lead bullet loads I use for revolver matches and the Federal and Speer self-defense ammo I have for this revolver.  I have a bunch of 130gr FMJ bullets in 357 I've never found a good use for, so now I have one.

And I discovered that, somehow, I loaded a bunch of 9mm too light to cycle my XD9 properly.  There has been a reloading stand-down, and a formal investigation has been launched.  Firings and stern letters may result.  Always work up my loads for semi-autos to where they cycle the gun, and then add a small margin (.1 extra grain of powder), for reliability.  Did so with this load, but there's no doubt - get a FTE/FTF about every 6th or 7th round.  Was able to confirm the pistol's OK yesterday after a match, ran some mags of factory ammo, and some other reloads, through it - no problem.

I'm going to get cute and see if using my old recoil spring will allow these reloads to work, if not, then a fellow RO buddy who always gives me stuff will get a few hundred rounds - his Glock cycled just fine with them this week.

262 Fun post for me! First: the most comfortable shooting glove I've used is a bicycling glove. No fingers, open mesh on the back of the hand for cooling, and palm padding in just the right spots. Bonus is you can sell the other one to one of your sinister left-handed friends.
Second: To practice and save ammo, consider getting an air rifle or pistol and a bullet trap for indoor fun. For the air guns there are plenty available with good accuracy at the limits of your basement range that don't make a huge dent in your pocket book. Remember that you are working on your shooting muscle memory and sight picture.  For a bullet trap, I like the one I got from Sig-Sauer. It has right and left knock down targets with a center reset target that, IIRC, was about 30-40 bucks.
Third: For a Black Powder rifle I have a T/C 50 cal Hawkins and it is an absolute blast (SWIDT) to shoot. Mine is a finish it yourself kit that I got in the mid-90's. Don't know if they're still available though.  There is something about the slow, methodical loading and firing of a black powder rifle, especially using a patched round ball, that makes it one of my favorites when I'm stalking the wild tin can.

264 Some day when I get around to such things, a 9mm AR interests me.  A few guys have come to the range in the past year who had built their own.  One for his wife, so he maxxed out the "light weight" aspect, thing was very light, handled and shot so easily.

268 Hi all!  Cannibal Bob and I bought a Ruger 10/22 for fun and practice.  It is SO FUN! And I don't feel guilty pew pewing away with it.  We also picked up a Glock 44 which is terrific to practice with in lieu of my Glock 43X as those 9mm bullets are pricy.  I feel so much more confident with loads of 22 rounds fired.  It is definitely a great way to practice!

270 One of my indoor ranges closed because they didn't bother to make any connections with ammo suppliers prior to the shut down and panic.  They were left in the cold and couldn't pay the rent.  It was just a couple of miles from my house.  Now I have to fight traffic and take 15 minutes to get to another range. First world Texas problems.

276 And the really good news is that, it appears, the handgun matches I had started to skip (even before C19 idiocy shut everything down last year) may be on the road to recovery.  As in:  decently high round count, lots of movement, lots of steel, more stages.  They had become so deficient in all three respects that spending half a day at them had become an uninviting proposition.

Yesterday's was very good.  Shot the 1911 because of my reload/cycling adventure with the XD (and this is not the revolver-friendly ICORE-ish monthly match, this is the other one).  Slowed down, paid attention to finger position on the trigger, and shot fairly well.

In the last year I've shot less than in the previous 8 or 9.  Getting back into these matches will raise my round count nicely.

Fritzy, Spot on. T/C no longer makes the Hawkin or Renegade although there are a bunch of used ones out there. The pace of loading and firing traditional muzzleloaders is part of the attraction for many of us. Not to mention the connection to history.

288 AOP, look at a magwell adaptor and 9mm upper.  You'll need to get a heavier buffer (8oz or above IIRC), but you can use a 5.56 AR lower you've already got.
I think RRA sells everything at their website in the link above, but they're pretty proud of the magwell adaptors.  I think those are around $100 or so at other stores. Posted by: Reverend Chanequa Moron-Robbie Deonkay Smith III at April 18, 2021 08:28 PM (em09h)

I got an Obsidian Arms 20" 9 mm upper, with bolt, although it measures out at about 18" from the rear of the chamber to the end of the muzzle. It has an M-Lok label on it. I got the buffer tube, heavier buffer plug, and small parts kit as well. Also an adaptor that goes in a regular 5.56 P-Mag to allow it to stack and feed 9 mm.

I'll go fully against convention here, so get'cher slings and arrows aimed and ready.

The "blackpowder" rifle for me will be a modern one with breech loading, and the ability to wrench out the percussion cap breech and spin-in a 209 primer-ready breech in it's place.  Or the reverse, as might be required.  Versatility.

Breech loading, cause if it was good enough for the Ferguson Rifle, it's classic enough for me.

What I don't know is whether I'd go traditional blackpowder, modern pseudo-blackpowder, or the pressed cylinders of pre-measured boomy pills.

Sabot loads as primary, ball as practice and backup.  And a twist rate selected to serve both, if possible.

If I'm resorting to the primitive, I want mine to be the most non-primitive one in the field.  Because going to that Last Ditch implement means exactly that, and no one will care if I'm true to Davy Crockett's long rifle or Kit Carson's Hawken.

I just want gear that's gonna work, even if in the pouring rain.

That said?  The smallbore Pennsylvania Rifle is about as pretty as they come, and the art in some of those is mind blowing in the extreme.

Owning and shooting one of those WOULD be for entertainment purposes, and especially if "squirrel" was the headliner for the day's entertainment.

291 Excellent point, Lame-R! I encourage people to take notes on their range sessions and save their targets, and review them afterward. Anything that gave you trouble should be the first thing you concentrate on next time at the range.

I completely agree with this idea.  Since I got back into handgun shooting, I use 3-5 targets and then take them home and look at them. I'll maybe fire around a hundred rounds or so, but I'm not really keeping track.  I remember, usually, when I shot at that particular target, and I try to remember any specific ideas I was thinking at the time.
There are certainly times when I was nailing the center, and times where the broad side of a barn were safe.  I remember the good shots and try to figure out how I was holding, the stance, and anything else.  I also try to remember the bad shots, and what I was doing wrong.
Then, I take my pistol out, check it to make sure it is empty, make sure the ammo is not in the room, check it again, and then practice dry-fire.  My grip has improved, the feel is just more comfortable and natural, and I can concentrate on my next area of improvement, the trigger pull.
For me, anyway, this is working, and often I am not firing a round, saving money.

* keeping the topic restricted to gun purchases, lest we be here all night
I bought another project rifle when I haven't finished the last two I started. This one is a Savage model 12 in 6mm BR.  Which is not a bad cartridge but this barrel has a twist that's way too slow for the heavier bullets I'm going to want to shoot.  I've already accepted the idea that I may need to rebarrel and if I do that, I probably won't keep it 6BR.  6mm Dasher might be a good choice, or maybe .308 since I already have dies and it would let me shoot in F/TR.  And right now all my stuff is packed up preparing for a move.  I'm hoping to have a working, presentable rifle by MoMe time but we'll see.

308 Keeping records: YES. My shooting and reloading rely on this. I'll take a picture of a target for posterity, bring the paper home, measure stuff and write down my excuses. Many a time do I go back and look at my notes when loading a new round or powder to see what worked and what didn't. It also ties into cleaning, a sort of Zen moment when you are thinking how it all works and how you can do better. And at my age, if I don't write it down, it didn't happen.

310 290 ... "I'll go fully against convention here, so get'cher slings and arrows aimed and ready."

Jim,  No slings or arrows needed. Just a matter of preference. My interest in MLs and BP guns in general grew out of interest in history. As it turned out, the traditional style also can lead to more involvement in the hobby with making gear, learning older ways of doing things, etc. Since I don't hunt anymore I take a wider and more relaxed approach to using the guns. And in my case, the guns often feel better than modern ones for balance and recoil.

315 Natchez did have 1000 rounds of Blazer 9mm for about $550 earlier today.  Even Midway had some Blazer 9mm in 50 rounds for about 65 cents per round.  Sportsmansguide has S&B 9mm 250 round packs for about 80 cents per round.
Quite a bit of steel cased .223 and 7.62 x 39 around and getting a bit cheaper. Aimsurplus has quite a bit as does JG Sales. Brass reloadable .223/5.56 is around but about 1 buck per round unless buying in bulk.  Plenty of .308 Winchester around.
Other rifle calibers depend on US usage--.30-06 in short supply and high. Euro calibers are around and just slightly elevated.

I've pretty much taken ammo out of the equation and am getting a handle on the meteorology. I was seeing wind mirage and spotting my own shots.  The audible of bullet on steel was rewarding. And last round of the day was that goat at 1106. It takes so long to hear the steel that you think it's a miss.

Thanks for the suggestion but if it's a Grendel head diameter, then I would need to change bolt heads.  Which is certainly doable on a Savage, so...  Another one to put on the think pile.  I'm not exactly an early adopter when it comes to calibers though.  Other than an oddball Contender barrel, the 6BR is the first rifle caliber I've owned that was USGI standard issue at one point or another.

334 I am processing the last of the range brass, off and on, and quite a bit of the five five six has crimped primers.  So, I will have to swage those before cleaning after I finish depriming them.
Hope to get out the range this week finally. Been tied up with work and some health issues.
BTW, old S&W Hand Ejectors, Rossi Model 69's, and Colt Police Positive in .32 S&W Long (aka .32 Colt New Police) revolvers are around for a lot less than .38 Special.  Fun to shoot and easy on the hands.  It is pretty much a reloading proposition right now unless you want to pay about 1 buck per round.
Buffalo Bore makes some decent self defense ammo in .32 S&W Long that is safe in solid frame revolvers made by Colt, Rossi, or S&W.  Do not use this ammo in the break open revolvers.  It is standard pressure but hard on those old break open revolvers as their heat treatment was either absent or not that well done on key action parts.

353 I do keep notebooks on rifles on how loads perform but since I am usually shooting 100-300 yards with open or peep sights, I focus more on load performance.  Geared up to reload for .30 Carbine so will do that soon..  One sidenote, if you are reloading for semi automatics, especially military types, I strongly suggest having an ammo check gage and check each round before firing.  Given the state of qc, it is probably wise to do that with your store bought rounds as well.
Reports are out there via John Farnam's DTI that Winchester and Remington have been having some issues QC wise on range ammo. The Federal companies, Speer, Federal, Blazer, CCI, are reportedly fine.
Handguns blaster ammo, usually keep some reloading notes by cartridge but don't bother to have separate notebooks for particular handguns.  Those bound lab or school notebooks for a single class make good cheap notebooks for particular rifles or loads.

395 The only way you'll get red flag gun laws to work would be reopening asylums, lowering standards for short term involuntary holds, and creating a national registry for those who spend any time in a mental ward. It'd be a bureaucratic overreach and civil rights nightmare. Otherwise, there's really no way of keeping previously non-violent weirdos from buying guns legally.

That's the thing though. Simple confiscation without criminal charges or a mental health hospitalization means his local police were holding the shotgun down at the precinct, and there's a process for getting the gun back, usually a written request, and maybe an in-person interview.

It's an informal procedural matter, not codified law.

425 Ah, I am so screwed. After eschewing shooting during a long stay in California, because every time I thought about doing the stupid paperwork they required, I got so pissed off that I didn't do anything, I am finally in a Free State and ready to shoot.
But what is this strange new world? I can order ammo online with no hassle, yes, but it's mostly out of stock and far more expensive than I ever imagined. The brands are different. I remember Federal being the good stuff, and CCI being OK range ammo, but there's like a million choices now, some of them are probably terrible, some wonderful, and I don't know where to begin.
I would have look for the archives of previous gun threads, but we all know why I can't do that. So, a couple of questions:
What are good ammo sources online?
What are good ammo brands, both the good stuff and good reliable range fodder.
Bonus question: where the hell can I find ammo for my 264 Win Mag rifle?

426 Anecdotal evidence that the ammo shortage is not over is the relative silence on weekends around here. Had one neighbor a couple ridges over shooting earlier but in general it's silent.

No they have to present case to the court after two weeks if they want to continue to hold the weapons.

I don't agree with red flag laws based on subjective danger but I do believe we can't ignore objective danger and maybe not sell guns to someone who was just interviewed by the FBI for cause without another check.   You don't need new laws for that.

450 Splunge,
Federal, CCI, Speer, etc. have excellent quality control and no problems noted.
Winchester White Box is generally ok range ammo but dirty.  Recently, Winchester took over the Lake City Ammo plant from Federal and some people report some QC issues of late.  Winchester also opened a new .22 LR plant in Mississippi that is supposedly, haven't checked, to take the place of their Illinois plant for .22 LR.
Remington had severe issues as the company was going under, like Cash on Delivery for components, etc. Federal has now taken over the plant and reopened it.
Foreign ammo, Prvi Partisan is good, S&B okay, Norma and Lapua, premium stuff there including brass and bullets.  GECO is another Euro brand quite good, Eley is premium .22 LR match stuff from Great Britain, and Ruag (Swiss) is also good.
Barnaul, Red Star Army, Wolf (the Wolf Gold is better and sourced differently also SK makes some of their .22), Golden Bear, Silver Bear, etc. are all steel cased and usually, not always, bi metal (aka steel) in the jackets of the bullets.  Can introduce a worry about barrel wear for some.  Not reloadable generally with Berdan primers and fired ammo can often smell like cat pee depending on the powder used.
.264 Winchester--try Midway USA and put the notifier function to send you a message when back in stock.

458 Hi Horde!
Hi Weasel!
Took two youngest kids to the farm to shoot the handguns.  First time for both with handguns.
Youngest daughter has tiny hands and weighs 98#.  She shot the 9mm great.
Son did OK, but he has exceptional fine-motor skills.  He thinks he should only be knocking out bullseyes.
I sure wish they had a better instructor!  (I am a terrible shot.)
Both had great fun.
Youngest daughter gave me the "teenager look" while going over the safety rules.  After she saw the damage that the 9mm did to the target backing board, her respect for the gun went way up.  She was VERY diligent on her safety rules after that.

468 Oh, and the Winchester premium (non white box) is generally good.
Boutique firms, Black Hills (excellent but limited in cartridges), Nosler (excellent bullets and brass), Weatherby (Norma used to load for them dunno about now) but top notch stuff. Buffalo Bore is useful if you like Hardcast for a number of old timey rifles and pretty good in self defense category as well.
Fiocchi, some of their stuff is good, some is okay.  Fiocchi has a plant in MO that produces some of their ammo here.

Posted by: whig at April 18, 2021 09:57 PM (pO7gM)

469 whig, as I'm not buying commercial (other than limited self-defense premium stuff) for many years now - are you saying that major brands are having QC problems that can result in rounds not chambering properly in semis?

That seems, I dunno, like an unbelievable QC problem.  Given the liability obsession (quite intense among ammo makers, obviously), and what I would think would be normal QC procedures (which wouldn't be affected by 24/7 production ramp-ups).

472 @437: "No they have to present case to the court after two weeks if they want to continue to hold the weapons."

Perhaps, but police aren't going to go out of their way to return weapons to the home in question. If no case, then the gun remains in evidence inventory until the suspect comes down to ask for it back, and I assume most never bother. It's a pocket veto sorta situation. Completely informal.

And, legally speaking, yeah, actually, we do kinda need new laws, if we're gonna setup any sort of red flag system. There needs to be clearly defined circumstances for prohibiting non-violent, non-felons from buying guns, time limits, official appeal processes, etc. Otherwise, any such prohibition would never survive a court challenge. There's no way to make any of this work without new bureaucracy.

480 Splunge,  If I am around on any thread, you can ask about specific cartridges.  On preloaded ammo for serious hunting at range, I would look at Nosler, Norma, and Lapua depending on what cartridge I was firing.  The top end of Federal can come close to these.  Black Hills is excellent but limited to more or less military cartridges.
Hornady is probably one of the ammo makers most similar to Federal and the key is to know what bullets are being used as Hornady has blaster grade bullets but also can have some excellent bullets with innovative technology at the high end.  Hornady is also quite adept at working with rifle manufacturers to come out with new cartridges.
If you want to fire at serious long range for targeting etc., Weasel should be able to help.

493 Rhomboid,  It has been suspected that Winchester White Box has been occasionally reloaded abroad or using imported components.  Remington also had some issues for similar reasons during the last big ammo squeeze before this one.  The QC issues came up during the TAC Con this year as reported by John Farnam of Defense Training International.  John is a old school trainer and pretty prominent in the trainer community.  See his free quips on his website this year for details.  Those guys go through thousands of rounds with their students and pretty much can observe what is going on.
I do know that during the last two ammo crunches, I got pistol rounds that were mangled, rifle rounds that would not feed, one round had the bullet inserted backwards from Winchester and Remington, and Fiocchi 7.62x39 had case necks that were too short to reload although my SKS did not miss a beat in firing them. 500 Pixy has been getting updates from the server farm, and at one point it was the end of the week (week one) then Friday (the 16th) was mentioned. At soe point one does wonder if the delay isn't just so the Server Farm can make sure all the Equip is LEO snooping approved.

Oh, I never believed any of those estimates, so I discounted them as soon as I read them... Hardware replacement after a fire and configuration of software takes a while to get right.

BTDT.

505 Signing off for the night.
Thanks Weasel as always.
Finally got my AR style extractors from PTG for the PTG bolt on my Remington project.  Now to the barrel and then stock.  Thinking that I will install a Remage type barrel nut barrel so that I can switch barrels among the same general type of cartridge.  Will give up some accuracy in exchange for more surety in having ammo (or components) to feed it.
Starting with a .280 Remington I believe because I have a long action, then maybe a .284 Winchester barrel in a year or two.
Already reload for 7x57, 6.5x55, so then the next barrel in the lot after the .284 might be a 6.5 x 284.

507 Weasel, did you get my e-mail about the little strange phone call I received about my C&R?

508 Posted by: OrangeEnt at April 18, 2021 10:17 PM (7bRMQ) --- I did.  Haven't had a chance to respond yet.  Very interesting!

510 darn, missed the guns.
Ah well.
Not much to add except that I did buy on auction a Rock Island 1911 in .38 Super. Sigh. Another mouth to feed....

514 I wonder what a gunsmith would charge to put it together.

I'd do it for free. Of course, I'd want to keep it afterward.....

515 What are good ammo sources online?

Posted by:Splungeat April 18, 2021 09:42 PM (RzGcW)

I've stated before that Georgia Arms has impressed me with a small steady stream of what appears to be good ammo. You're not buying in bulk form them, probably, but you're getting 100 rounds at a time. ANd their prices seemed competitive.

Otherwise, I scour different sites: Classic Firearms Wholesale Hunter Ammoland Ammo Man Midway USA Georgia Arms Palmetto State Armory Target Sports USA Bulk Ammo Ammunition Depot

516 There's no way to make any of this work without new bureaucracy.

Only if you burn down the old one, first.
