How Frank Luntz Lost His Groove
— Ace

@AOSHQDOOM linked this last night. If you've gotten the sense that America has lost its way and doesn't even seem to want to find its way back, Frank Luntz has the data to back that up. And he's depressed about it.

America's best-known public-opinion guru hasn't suddenly gone vegan. Luntz—the tubby, rumpled guy who runs the focus groups on Fox News after presidential debates, the political consultant and TV fixture whose word has been law in Republican circles since he helped write the 1994 Contract With America—has always been a hard man to please. But something is different now, he tells me. Something is wrong. Something in his psyche has broken, and he does not know if he can recover.

Frank Luntz is having some kind of crisis. I just can't quite get my head around it.
"I've had a headache for six days now, and it doesn't go away," he tells me as we take our seats at a table downstairs. "I don't sleep for more than two or three hours at a time. I'm probably less healthy now than I have ever been in my life." He's not sure what to do. He's still going through the motions—giving speeches, going on television, conducting focus groups, and advising companies and politicians on how best to convey their message.

...

The crisis began, he says, after last year's presidential election, when Luntz became profoundly depressed. For more than a month, he tried to stay occupied, but nothing could keep his attention. Finally, six weeks after the election, during a meeting of his consulting company in Las Vegas, he fell apart. Leaving his employees behind, he flew back to his mansion in Los Angeles, where he stayed for three weeks, barely going outside or talking to anyone.

...

"I spend more time with voters than anybody else," Luntz says. "I do more focus groups than anybody else. I do more dial sessions than anybody else. I don't know shit about anything, with the exception of what the American people think."

It was what Luntz heard from the American people that scared him. They were contentious and argumentative. They didn't listen to each other as they once had. They weren't interested in hearing other points of view. They were divided one against the other, black vs. white, men vs. women, young vs. old, rich vs. poor. "They want to impose their opinions rather than express them," is the way he describes what he saw. "And they're picking up their leads from here in Washington." Haven't political disagreements always been contentious, I ask? "Not like this," he says. "Not like this."

....

In reelecting Obama, the people had spoken. And the people, he believed, were wrong. Having spent his career telling politicians what the people wanted to hear, Luntz now believed the people had been corrupted and were beyond saving. Obama had ruined the electorate, set them at each other's throats, and there was no way to turn back.

...

[W]hat if the Real People are wrong? That is the possibility Luntz now grapples with. What if the things people want to hear from their leaders are ideas that would lead the country down a dangerous road?

"You should not expect a handout," he tells me. "You should not even expect a safety net. When my house burns down, I should not go to the government to rebuild it. I should have the savings, and if I don't, my neighbors should pitch in for me, because I would do that for them." The entitlement he now hears from the focus groups he convenes amounts, in his view, to a permanent poisoning of the electorate—one that cannot be undone. "We have now created a sense of dependency and a sense of entitlement that is so great that you had, on the day that he was elected, women thinking that Obama was going to pay their mortgage payment, and that's why they voted for him," he says. "And that, to me, is the end of what made this country so great."

Neo-Neocon discusses Luntz's dour assessment of the American psyche.

This is why the Democrats have picked themselves up from the debacle that Obamacare has been and are counting on their campaign against “economic inequality” to appeal in this way. But the message is hardly new, and of course it hardly began with Obama, although he has delivered it repeatedly. The soil was carefully fertilized first before he could plant those seeds and have them take root so well. This is a strain in politics and in culture—both in America and abroad—that has been building for literally hundreds of years. And it rests on a foundation that is inherent in human nature, although that aspect is not always dominant and is ever at war with another desire, one towards liberty and independence.

Obama could not have been elected (remember what he said to Joe the Plumber?) without the ground having been prepared by nearly a century of ever-increasing entitlements, and most especially a “progressive” takeover of the major institutions that shape both the growing mind and the adult one (education, the MSM, and entertainment), as well as the slow and steady undermining of the traditional family.

There is no mystery here, and there should have been no surprise. If Luntz and many others were surprised, they werenÂ’t paying attention.

....

Despair about this is not an option, although it is sometimes a temptation. Obamacare is a little window of opportunity that needs to be opened. But the stupid party (you know who you are) had better get a lot smarter very soon. ItÂ’s late, and getting later.

Read the whole things, both.

Hot Air's Quotes of the Day were mostly about this. Well, this, and an Internet Vaporware Meme that "The Right Craves a New King, because they don't believe democracy will produce good results any longer." But the silly "king" meme is just an expression of frustration with the voters' choice to begin hooking up with Socialism, and maybe even let Socialism get to Fourth Base.

Well yes.  That's kind of the problem.   When   politicians depend on telling people what they want to hear instead of what they need to hear,    and the people do not argue or think critically about what they're hearing,   you end up with a spoiled electorate that expects    its whims to be catered to    and an equally spoiled   political class who expect to be elected without actually    accomplishing anything so long as they say the right words.

This    was not unforeseen.     It is, however, extremely depressing.   On that, Luntz and I agree.

16 The Left wants to claim Diversity as the highest value. I don't understand how being as different from each as possible leads to a strong society. Maximizing Diversity seems suicidal.

17 What this country needs is a congress that follows the will of the people, a congress that votes for their district, a congress that votes the way their constituent groups want. That is what 'representation' is all about.

Of course, the original idea was that representatives would use their own best judgement, that they were elected because they were of good moral character and exhibited sound decision making, and were expected to find the best solution for the whole nation not a constituent part. but that was a long time ago and this is now where things are different.

18 Let it burn: not an assertion of will, but an acceptance of fact.
Not a declaration of intent, but an acquiescence to reality.
Let it burn, baby, 'cause it's already on fire. Pray. Prepare if you want, but remember, at the end of the day, preparations will go awry, food will go bad, gold will be stolen, and ammunition will be spent.
All you can trust in is Jesus Christ and His salvation. Everything else is crumbling fast.

21 Short version: Entitlements are evil. On the (literal) order of Slavery "evil." First, they enslave the productive to the unproductive- the makers to the takers- for "fairness." Then, they enslave the takers to the Nobility- by whose whim they are granted the largess of the makers. At the end, only the Nobility remains free; and they must constantly war to make sure the serfs are more afraid of each other and the "other" Nobles than they are of their own feudal lord.

24 There are those of us on the right who don't see a monarchy as the ultimate of all evils. Of course, it's out of the question for the U.S. We've got too much history behind us and the population, even as fucking stupid as most people are, are too advanced for an effective monarchy. However, a lot of problems around the world could be solved or avoided by the installation of a King in countries where they are just not developmentally ready for a democracy.

By promoting "diversity," as the left defines it, you can add the adjectives you want to yourself to be an individual. Except you must think only a certain way. That way, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Haven't political disagreements always been contentious, I ask? "Not like this," he says. "Not like this." Crack a fuckin history book, Frank! It's tribalism - it's how human beings have arranged their affairs from the beginning of time, genius. Look at anywhere that an artificial societal structure has been imposed on tribal societies - Yugoslavia, the Balkans, the Caucuses, Iraq, Iran, the United States - the list is as long as the list of countries in the world. The most harmonious are those with the most homogenous populations. Note, not the most pleasant - the most harmonious. All these geniuses discovering human nature for the first time are what depresses me. Because these are the same assholes who are in charge, and they think they can change it.

42 "There is no mystery here, and there should have been no surprise. If Luntz and many others were surprised, they werenÂ’t paying attention." - Neo-neocon I enjoy reading her, but this is one of the most fatuous statements she has ever written. It seems she and Luntz are talking about two different things. There has always been an populist sentiment in this country about the "little guy" getting screwed by the rich and how we "deserve" something..something...something. This is not what Luntz is talking about. It is the profound wish for a Dictatorship of Redistributionist Democracy. We came close in the Roosevelt "New Deal" years, but there were plenty of people who remembered otherwise. We now have cultural amnesia (self - imposed) and a large "educated" class that embraces this kind of collectivism. This country is heading for a crash. A big, bad one. Electing Romney, although a half measure and many decried him, might have made it a survivable crash. Now, with Hillary the imminent successor (or someone as stupid or worse), we are going to crash.

76 While it's true enough we've been co-opted to believe we have a right to entitlements, there's also the little matter of rampant voter fraud. It's the two things, hand in hand, which won obama re-election -- and why I went into a pretty big funk on election night. Everyone who still thinks we can win elections is quaintly naive. The dems will see to that, one way or another. Stuff the voters' heads with stupid memes like the GOP "war on women!" and the like while stuffing the ballot box with the ballots of the dead, fictional, or identity stolen. Thanks, obama. You've completed the work your leftist forebears have been doing all these decades. You've put brother against brother. There's only one way this ends, unfortunately. At the risk of godwinning myself, this is how Germans agreed to allow Hitler to exterminate the Jews, and how our country dealt with divisiveness on the eve of the Civil War. Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it.

Crack a fuckin history book, Frank! It's tribalism - it's how human beings have arranged their affairs from the beginning of time, genius.

People like Luntz forget that America as constituted is an aberration.   Compared to the rest of human history, America is an anomaly.  And the problem with anomalies is that they tend to be worn down    to match the status quo unless they are actively promoted and elevated.

Luntz thought that Americans would always be the same because they were Americans.  He seems to have forgotten that the very concept of being an "American"    barely even registers on the anthropological scale of history.   It was always ours to lose.

101 This is not what Luntz is talking about. It is the profound wish for a Dictatorship of Redistributionist Democracy. We came close in the Roosevelt "New Deal" years, but there were plenty of people who remembered otherwise. ***** And now we have the aging Baby Boomer population and ACA. Look how much mileage the Left got out of threatening that Republicans would "take" Grandma's Social Security. They'll go for the finish by implementing ObamaCare and then forever threatening-- "Republicans want to take healthcare away from you!"

I knew it was because Romney had been presented as a monstrous, evil Richie Rich who was going to take away all their benefits (and yes there were people there who needed benefits for one reason or another and were not just moochers) when there are even MORE people at the food pantry now than than during Obama's first term.

103 Luntz says 'America has spoken by re-electing Obama'. AMERICA did not elect, much re-elect Obama. Obama was put in office largely by uneducated voters, lied-to voters, and fake-guilty voters. The slack was taken up by voter fraud, as per all democrat schemes. This scam was backed 100% by the 'media', and at this point, I will include FOX in the 'media'. Whoever the media tells the early primary states to coronate will be the candidate, so there won't be another republican president. I don't see a candidate out there who deserves my vote, anyway. Posted by: toby928 Pat is one hard ass old man and I would vote for him before Governor Donut or Jebbie the Quim. There are two political parties in this country, and they are not Democrat and Republican, Conservative or Liberal, left or right. There are the people (one party) wants to rule and be ruled, that believes that government should control aspects of your life. The other party is made up of people that want to live as free men (and women) that want to live under the Rule of Law. The Elected and Protected Ruling Class in Washington (and in a state capital near you) and most of the Media, Academia, etc belong in the first group. That's their part. Most normal people that work for a living belong in the second group. We don't expect to get rich, we don't expect favors, but we expect the Law to work for us and to treat us square. It doesn't and it won't, until we take it back. Prospects at this time are dim, because our choice for Prezzident in 2016 will be Jebby the Quim, Governor Donut, or Hillary the Harridan.

We laugh at the cult of Obama and I would never suggest that type of blind loyalty but if we want to win we better start understanding that our differences pale in comparison to our differences with the left and start playing to win.

227 What this country needs is a congress that follows the will of the people, a congress that votes for their district, a congress that votes the way their constituent groups want. That is what 'representation' is all about.

That's pretty much what we have now.

Many of us simply have trouble accepting that the will of the people or of their district is not what we want it to be.

We as conservatives are, to put it indelicately, extremists.  Cite the Good Old Days or the Constitution all you like, but that doesn't change the fact that we are a rather small minority.  Being right doesn't make a sliver of difference.

We scream and bitch when a GOP member of Congress doesn't vote or act how we want them to, but most of the time they're doing exactly what you suggested- following the will of the people.

I actually think it's used too often.   Words like "liberty" and "freedom" have been used so much that they've lost all meaning.  Their actual importance and    how they should make you FEEL have gone by the wayside.  They've become sentimentalist slogans without any real bite behind them.   And that fault lies squarely on our elitist political class.

There's a    recurring  movement here in NH that resurfaces every few years to scrap the state motto - "Live free or die" -- because it's too "off putting"   and  "angry."      That should tell you all you need to know     of    what stupid people understand about freedom.

I don't think it's anti-tribalism.  Tribalism IS.  You can't get away from it.  What you can do is try to make tribes work together for the common good, thereby improving every tribe's station.   America was always at its   best when we were a melting pot of different cultures working together, not this preposterous "salad bowl" of separate groups existing   in close,  uneasy proximity.

Obama and the progressive left thrive on dissension and pessimism.

A people concerned mainly with hanging on to what little they've got and at their neighbors; throats are a people who are never going to bestir themselves to object to or even question the defining down of deviancy -- gay marriage, free dope, abortion on demand, a rampaging welfare state, the demonization of organized religion, the marginalization of people of faith, and the conversion of the nation to a one-party state.

305 "You should not expect a handout," he tells me.

This misses a big part of the reality.  Sure - the left has made a majority of Americans willing to be dependent on the Gov't.  But, the left did not do that alone.  The GOP helped almost every step of the way.

George W. Bush said in his campaign (paraphrasing): "when people hurt, the gov't has to act."

The GOP has never really fought against the idea of the gov't solving people's problems.  The GOP has instead done the same exact thing as the dems in telling people it will solve their problems and give them stuff, albeit to a lesser extent than the Dems. That is because the GOP is not a conservative party.  It is a slightly less liberal than the DNC party.  That is not the same thing.

This is why I say we, as conservatives need to sit out the 2014 elections and put the fear of always losing elections into the GOP.  If we don't move them to the right now, we never will.  this is our last best chance.  The stars are aligned.

I say this because a) 2014 doesn't matter all that much in that a "lost chance" to win the Senate will not lose much, if anything.  Obama will still be in office and therefore Obamacare won't be repealed.  And no other conservative stuff will get done (assuming - wrongly - that the GOP would pursue any such conservative things).  So, it's not a big loss not to win the Senate in 2014.

Meanwhile, because it is looking like very good circumstances for the GOP.  If conservative defections cost them elections - they will not be able to ignore it.

Finally, because of how bad Obama is and how bad Obamacare is, 2016 will likely still be a good opportunity for the GOP to win.

This is the year to make a real effort to force the GOP to the right.  The only way to do that is to prove to the GOP that conservatives will not vote for a left-of-center GOP just because the Dems are worse.  The only way to prove that is to sit out an election.

Absent that, the GOP will not change.  it would have no reason to.  First, the majority of candidates who run as conservatives are not - so once in office they are happy to go along with the GOP leftism.  Second, those that are actually conservative are in such a huge minority in the GOP, they have little sway.  The idea that we will change the status quo with a primary here or a primary there is inane.

That the Dem Party is now fully socialist (socialism has gone  beyond fourth base, and has been giving the  Dem Party Cleveland Steamers and Dirty Sanchezeseses)  does not change the fact that the Republican Party is more in line with them than it is with its right wing.

332 Another blast from the past-but for me very relevant-from Francois Fenelon: Anxiety about the future "The future is in God's hands, not yours. God will rule it according to your need. But if you seek to forecast it in your own wisdom, you will gain nothing bit anticipation of invevitable trouble. Try to only make use of each day. Each days brings its own good and evil and sometimes what seems evil becomes good if we leave it to God and do not forestall it with our own impatience. Be sure God will grant you whatever you need to reach him...In proportion as God upsets your own inclinations he will uphold your weakness. Do not be afraid to leave everything to Him. You will always find freedom in God so long as you don;t give way to the false idea that you have lost your freedom." From a letter to a person Fenelon spiritually advised and in a selection. "The Royal way of the Cross/" And Francois Fenelon is speaking of freedom in Christ which is different than the political freedoms. It's a freedom Paul addresses in his letters and when he talks about contentment in Christ even while in prison. And no, I don't think I'm nearly as spiritually progressed as Paul and may never be, was but God is working on me. :^) America isn't, and never was and never will be the Kingdom of God even if we had the most perfect conservative President. Do I think God had a large part in it's prospering-yes, but I don't want a conservative faux messiah either.

The only debate worth having is what is on or off the table for dealing with this problem. 352 Go ahead and indulge in poor me all you wish.

I'll be over here doing my damndest to change the trajectory in my own small way.

I unabashedly love my country and will sacrifice my life to help save it if necessary.

Isn't ANYONE going to stop me from trying.

Laugh at me, deride me, don't give a fat fuck.

So you may join or watch, it'll be interesting either way.

How do we get that no fault national divorce?

I would not fight for her as currently constituted, and I damned sure wouldn't spill my son's blood for it. As someone upthread alluded....why should I die for a fellow American? There is a good chance they hate me anyway, so fuck them.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I'm in favor of a left versus right shooting war in the U.S. to resolve these issues.

They want a completely different country than what we want.  You cannot compromise between full on socialism and liberty.  At some point, we have to fight.

The sad thing is that most of the kind of crap that the founders were against have already happened to us by our own gov't, being voted for by our own citizens.

Months before the election I was at a music festival and overheard union reps coaching several mentally deficient adults on how to vote to insure they would be able to keep their benefits. I was disgusted. After the election, however, I could not shake the knowledge that the future of America had been decided by people who were not even capable of driving a car or living on their own, yet could and did vote. That is so wrong.

See, it's perfectly great for the GOP to increase spending and gov't because - you know - there's an "r" next to the name.  God forbid a "d" does it.  You see, the logic old shit himself has here is that it is a "win" if a republican wins an election.  Doesn't matter that the republican passes amnesty, increases spending, passes more gov't entitlements, etc.  as long as there is an "r" it's a victory!!  11!

And, shit himself will tell us that he is a true patriot and we are traitors.  You see, the mark of a true patriot (tm) is voting GOP no matter what.  That, my friends, is a true patriot (tm) in old shit himself's books.

Some people are effected differently than others.  Fine.  But this nonsense that everyone that was ever in combat throughout history is traumatized and has PTSD is just that, nonsense.

It is a fiction that has been created over the last 50 years.  Just as the left portrays every combat veteran as a loose canon with PTSD, as every movie portrays vets that way, etc.  It is a fiction.

Some small percentage of combat vets suffer this type of thing, not even close to a majority do. To claim otherwise is simply wrong.

It's a very modern and silly thing to make these claims.  It just isn't true.

The Fortune 200 for which I labor had the inconceivable brilliance to have Frank facilitate one of our annual top 400 leadership venues several years ago.  This outfit is run by the Finance gang so investing long coin on a personality is a rare thing indeed.  While I recognized Frank from Fox News, that was about all I knew of him.  He started off by dropping a George W. Bush joke, an insulting joke.  "W" was President at the time.  Believe me, and I'm very proud of it, the joke plummeted into the ether like a boulder into a very large black hole.  In a ballroom holding over 400 people, you could have heard a pin drop.  Not a soul in the room smiled.  Great company.  Anyway, to this day, I don't know why Frank did that.  He redeemed himself quickly and lead a lively and productive forum afterwards.  But, it was a mysterious way to begin a leadership venue in a deep red flyover state.

I voted for Romney.  And here we are - leftward.  And I still have no standing.

If he'd have won, we'd still be going leftward, just slower. Romney's victory would only have been an emotional, psychological blow to the left more that an actual, political blow. The RINO's would have been reaching across the aisle the next day. You know this to be true. Amnesty, anyone?

Yet you continually and blatantly ignore the reality that voting for current Republicans ALSO moves the country leftwards. Which is why people have quit voting for them.  This is not hard to understand, but you keep deliberate dismissing it - you're stuck on Stage One Thinking - "we must vote R no matter what, or else the D's will win!" Sad, sad.

It ain't R v. D.  That's labels.  It's limited govt. v. big govt.. And Repubs are not limited govt.
