Huh: Study Questions Long-Assumed Link Between Saturated Fat and Heart Disease
— Ace

The problem with people ain't so much ignorance as it is knowin' thing that just ain't so.

[N]ew research, published on Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, did not find that people who ate higher levels of saturated fat had more heart disease than those who ate less. Nor did it find less disease in those eating higher amounts of unsaturated fat, including monounsaturated fat like olive oil or polyunsaturated fat like corn oil.

...

But Dr. Frank Hu, a professor of nutrition and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, said the findings should not be taken as “a green light” to eat more steak, butter and other foods rich in saturated fat. He said that looking at individual fats and other nutrient groups in isolation could be misleading, because when people cut down on fats they tend to eat more bread, cold cereal and other refined carbohydrates that can also be bad for cardiovascular health.

...

He said people should try to eat foods that are typical of the Mediterranean diet, like nuts, fish, avocado, high-fiber grains and olive oil. A large clinical trial last year, which was not included in the current analysis, found that a Mediterranean diet with more nuts and extra virgin olive oil reduced heart attacks and strokes when compared with a lower fat diet with more starches.

Alice H. Lichtenstein, a nutritional biochemist at Tufts University, agreed that “it would be unfortunate if these results were interpreted to suggest that people can go back to eating butter and cheese with abandon,” citing evidence that replacing saturated fat with foods that are high in polyunsaturated fats – instead of simply eating more carbohydrates – reduces cardiovascular risk.

Their study has concluded there is no link between fat intake and heart disease, but they say they don't want you to think that eating fat's okay, because, you know, the risk of heart disease and all.

Meanwhile, a doctor claims that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) simply doesn't exist.

He believes that a large group of symptoms is just being labeled as "ADHD" because no one has any real idea what causes vague symptoms like a lack of focus. He also says that some real problems are being misdiagnosed as ADHD just because it's such an easy (false) diagnosis to make:

ADHD makes a great excuse,” Saul notes. “The diagnosis can be an easy-to-reach-for crutch. Moreover, there’s an attractive element to an ADHD diagnosis, especially in adults — it can be exciting to think of oneself as involved in many things at once, rather than stuck in a boring rut.”

In private practice, Saul found himself wondering, what other problems do these patients have besides being easily distracted? One girl he treated, it turned out, was being disruptive in class because she couldnÂ’t see the blackboard. Correct diagnois: myopia. She needed glasses, not drugs.

A 36-year-old man who complained about his addiction to online games and guessed he had ADHD, it turned out, was drinking too much coffee and sleeping only four to five hours a night. Correct diagnosis: sleep deprivation. He needed blackout shades, a white-noise machine and a program that shut all his devices off at midnight.

..

One by one, nearly all of SaulÂ’s patients turned out to have some disease other than ADHD, such as TouretteÂ’s, OCD, fragile X syndrome (a genetic mutation linked to mental retardation), autism, fetal alcohol syndrome, learning disabilities or such familiar conditions as substance abuse, poor hearing or even giftedness. A boy who was disruptive and inattentive in math class (but no other) was, simply, bored by the material and needed to be advanced a grade to regain his concentration.

I actually think he's juicing the headline and means it exists, but only in a very small number of people, and we're needlessly medicating a lot of kids just for being kids." With kids at least I'd bet 99% of it could be attributed to a collapse of discipline in school along with young boys just feeling caged in and bored like livestock. 45 I straight up believe the ADHD thing. (Next mostly-fake diagnosis: autism.) My mom was a kindergarten teacher, and the kids whose mothers were most loudly claiming the kid had ADHD were the ones with lunchboxes full of cans of soda, candy, and Hostess cakes, no regular bedtimes, whose parents didn't believe in spanking, and who played video games all day.

Somehow, kids who got 8 or 10 hours of sleep, had relatively healthy lunches, exercised, and had parents who taught them manners had pretty good behavior overall.

68 A majority of all published medical research is false. This has been known for a decade now. Only a large body of research is sufficient to have moderate confidence a finding is true. Especially something as variable as human health with so many confounding factors. Why Most Published Research Findings Are False John P. A. Ioannidis Citation: Ioannidis JPA (2005) Why Most Published Research Findings Are False. PLoS Med 2( : e124. doi:10.1371/journal.pmed.0020124 Published: August 30, 2005 Summary There is increasing concern that most current published research findings are false. The probability that a research claim is true may depend on study power and bias, the number of other studies on the same question, and, importantly, the ratio of true to no relationships among the relationships probed in each scientific field. In this framework, a research finding is less likely to be true when the studies conducted in a field are smaller; when effect sizes are smaller; when there is a greater number and lesser preselection of tested relationships; where there is greater flexibility in designs, definitions, outcomes, and analytical modes; when there is greater financial and other interest and prejudice; and when more teams are involved in a scientific field in chase of statistical significance. Simulations show that for most study designs and settings, it is more likely for a research claim to be false than true. Moreover, for many current scientific fields, claimed research findings may often be simply accurate measures of the prevailing bias. In this essay, I discuss the implications of these problems for the conduct and interpretation of research.

96 Almost all of the current "myths" surrounding heart disease originated from the "nurse study" conducted way back in the 40s.

Following my heart attack I read everything I could find regarding the subject, both old and new books.  What I found of the major causes was this listed in order of importance.

Ancestry - by far the largest indicator.  If your family has a history of heart disease you are a prime candidate.

Unhealthy eating/exercise habits - eating a lot and getting little or no exercise.

Smoking

There are others that some say like those on salt and eating fatty foods, but if they have any impact at all, it is minor.

On the first item if your family has a history of heart disease one needs to avoid the next two items like the plague.  One also needs to get regular checkups for heart disease building up.

Anyway, I lost weight doing this and my doc, who owns a weight loss clinic as a side business and pushes those vitamin shots plus the under 1000 calorie diet very hard was angry when he found out what I did to lose weight. 139 @55 ace, it isn't just happenstance and luck, though they help. But as they say, chance favors the prepared. I say that people who live in the Med regio live stress free lives, at least in comparison with the US. I lived in Greece and Italy, I have seen it. Italian food and Greek food would not be considered health food by any stretch in the US, and yet, they say do a Mediterranean diet. Exercise helps on the stress front. Yes, it is good to burn energy, but it helps you get your stress out, too. Sometimes it just takes a major internal change to address stress. Stress isn't about the things that happen, it is about how you react to them. You may not want to hear this or believe it, but faith in God helps on the stress reduction. I had an intensive course in dealing with stress going through West Point, not something everyone gets. But dealing with stressful situations helps you deal with stress, the same way exercise can build muscles. Even with that under my belt, I used to let a lot of things stress me that I no longer do. Maybe I am older now and full of less piss and vinegar, but things that used to really spin me up, I can let go of. There are still things there, there are still things that are stressors, but I don't let them affect me the same way I used to. I can't give you a specific checklist, but what I have written gives you a flavor.

141 I never understood the demonizing of pasta and bread when people in Italy consume incredible quantities of it, but are much slimmer than Americans on average. When I visited my wife's family in N. Italy the amount of bread consumed was staggering. According to the carb demonizers they should have all been dead 100 years ago, yet Italy remains. For every X food demonized, you can find a country that eats tons of X yet is slimmer than Americans on average. The takeaway point is it's not what you eat, it's just a matter of not eating like a pig while living a sedentary life.

146 I think a lot of the ADHD craze has to do with trying to treat little boys like little girls. There are undoubtedly other factors at work. One that cannot be discounted is the regular exposure of toddlers, pre-schoolers, and young elementary-school children to electronic media of a certain kind. I'm talking about the flashing lights and rapid change of scenes so common in children's programming today. Read the now classic Endangered Minds by Jane Healy, who documents how the Sesame Street style of programming damages the neural development of focus and attention span.

#117 THIS

My mother taught school from 1953 to 1995. She finally quit because half the kids were on meds. She said in the 1950s, kids went outside and played 3x per school day - a mid day recess (15 min), a lunch / recess HOUR, and a mid-afternoon recess (15 min).  She had no problem with boys paying attention so long as they got to get up and run around every few hours. You know, actually be boys. And most of them rode a bike or walked to school back in the old days, which took the edge off them before they even GOT to school. The ones who took a bus lived on farms, and they had been up doing farm chores before school, which also took the edge off them.

Meanwhile it is what we cured years ago with a stern talk, kick in the pants or some sports activity- which you can't get sitting on your ass and only using your thumbs.

Yet, they wonder why there is a false epidemic.  It's like having a vet diagnose problems with your investment portfolio.

For the love of sweet fancy Moses, the study says that it doesn't make things much worse.  It doesn't make anything better, either.

The only way to improve or reverse Corornary Artery Disease is a diet that has less than ten percent of calories from fat.  I cannot overemphasize this enough.  Find a copy of Esselstyn's aptly-named "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease".  He lays out the science about why he was able to help people who had been sent home to die by their cardiologists.

(I get fragged every time I talk about genuinely low-fat eating, but I have a close relative who had to have open-heart surgery twice due to a birth defect.  I will spare you the gory details, but why anyone would voluntarily undergo having their chest sawed open when they could easily avoid it by eating differently eludes me.)

None of that shit really matters much. Roof over your head, food on your table, the safety and security of yourself and loved ones- those things matter. If you watch a documentary about hunter-gatherer tribes, a couple things stand out- they have quite a bit of free time, and for the most part they're pretty chill. If it's not an impending threat to their family, tribe or basic survival they don't much give a shit.

192 Costanza Defense: "They show zero humility. Over and over again it is shown that the majority of published scientific research is actually false."

This is what troubles me so about the scientific community.

Go to any medical library. Or more broadly, science/tech library. Go back to the 19th and early 20th century shelves. Now walk past the shelves to the present. You could fit several decades of research on a single shelf or a row of shelves. Before long the shelves to cover an equivalent period of time grow exponentially.

Not all of that research in very small print filling volume upon volume is due just to advancements and expansion into the discipline of science. An increasingly large portion of that content is turning out to be crap. Expansive, expensive, counterproductive crap. And each of those papers referenced translate into tens to hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars per paper.

This is a problem.

A long overdue admission of the truth.  They have been refusing to admit that the real problem is the fact that the stuff sticks to your arteries at all.  The blockages build up because of scarification of the artery walls, which create a place for the plaque to accumulate.  In a study of several thousand samples of blocked artery tissues, nearly all of those samples had scars created by infection from bacterial infection.

206 I may have said that there is no such thing as ADHD once, but no more. My son, who is well-grounded in hard work, prayer, study, and morality is completely unable to get through a school day or even Mass without his meds. It is not a lack of trying, or just normal boy heebie-jeebies, but an actual inability to sit still or concentrate without some sort of distraction. I'm told it is mostly inherited, but that's hard to say in his case because we never met his first dad. It is possible that he could be diagnosed with something else, and I would prefer he NOT be medicated, but nothing else really fits and his meds work wonders.

I love doctors who say something doesn't exist but don't tell us what else might account for the issues. That article was long on denial and not too long on alternatives.

Exactly how I felt once, but my son? He doesn't behave like a little girl, but he no longer gets frustrated and hits other kids, or spends most of his class falling out of his chair and pestering everyone. His teacher works harder than any public school teacher ever did, as do his father and I, at training him to behave, and he knows what that takes, but he is unable to do it, and it makes him even more frustrated.

236 My mother taught school from 1953 to 1995.

Exactly, there is a certain percentage of kids that just run and scream or sing or yell for a few minutes when they go out for recess.  They are not bad, nor are they crazy.  They just need to burn off their excess energy.  If they are allowed this time to just burn it off, they usually go find a group and join in some game.

I went paleo 2 months ago. I eat predominantly meat and veggies. Really the only thing IÂ’ve cut out completely are grains. I donÂ’t feel hungry in the least. I exercise moderately a few times a week, and I have a sedentary job.

In those two months IÂ’ve lost 38 pounds. The easiest weight IÂ’ve ever lost and I have no desire to go back to the way I ate before. Above and beyond the weight loss, I feel better than I have in years. I have more energy, joint pain is gone, acid reflux is gone and IÂ’m more alert.

I’m no expert, but based on my personal experience it seem the “avoid fat, eat gains” mentality is crap.

My mother never served vegetables or potatoes without putting a good dollop of margarine on it. Of course they ate these things in old fashioned amounts. Which means portion sizes were about half of what most people eat today. When I was growing up the idea of eating a hamburger with a half pound patty was unheard of. And probably the best way to avoid a heart attack? Have good genes. My mother came from a very large family and I never heard of anyone from at least 4 generations having a heart attack.

Posted by: Stringer Davis at March 19, 2014 05:09 PM (xq1UY) I've read about the differences in labeling of coconut oil, between regular stuff, virgin, and extra virgin. The difference is in the degree that it is processed. The higher amount of processing it takes to extract the oil, the less it retains in the natural content of vitamins and minerals. If I remember correctly, the processing usually involves pressing (extra virgin and virgin) and heat (plain) to extract the oil, and the heat kills off nutrients. I'm assuming the same is true for olive oil.

295 The Saturated Fat/Heart Disease links was conclusively debunked several years ago. How? Eskimos! Apparently there was a long-running health study of Eskimos, dating back to the mid-20th century or even earlier. Someone in recent times reviewed the long-ignored data and found some astonishing facts: 1. Eskimo traditional diet is INCREDIBLY high in saturated fats. They eat walrus blubber raw, for example, sometimes as their primary food for months at a time. 2. Eskimos on the traditional diet had an incredibly LOW rate of heart disease! This was the exact opposite of what "modern nutritional science" predicts. He then discovered that over the decades, as eskimo populations transitioned from ultra-high-cholesterol blubber/fat diets to "healthier" Western-style diets, their rates of heart diseases SKYROCKETED. Again, the polar (pardon the pun) opposite of what was expected. And then he looked at accompanying data and found something even MORE astonishing: Those eskimos that transitioned to a Western-style diet ALSO got simultaneously got another benefit of western civilization: indoor running water. And he discovered that there was an even greater correlation between "getting running water" and "getting heart disease" than there was between "eating Western food" and "getting heart disease." What the hell is going on here?, he asked. So he probed further. Traditional eskimos only very rarely bathe. Especially in winter, as you might imagine. (Cold.) They might take a few snow-melt lake "baths" in the summer months, but for the other 9 months -- no all-body bathing. And when they did bathe, it was just straight water -- no soap in Eskimo culture. But those eskimos moving into towns and becoming "modernized" adopted the western habit of taking all-body soapy showers with hot water rather frequently. And he discovered: The more hot-water soapy-showers you take, the higher your blood cholesterol, and the higher incidence of heart disease. WTF?????????? And then - bingo! -- the dawning realization: What is cholesterol even doing in our blood in the first place? Well, one of the main reasons is that our skin needs sebum to keep it supple and ward off infections, and sebum (i.e. the oiliness on your skin) is synthesized from cholesterol. So your liver makes the cholesterol, sends it into the bloodstream, where it is carried to the skin and becomes sebum, so we don't get all crackly and dry up. Normally, for millions of years, our sebum stayed on our skin basically all the time, and was replaced little by little. But there's only one good way to remove ALL your sebum at once: soap and hot water. So every time you take a soapy shower you are chemically removing all the sebum from your skin. You liver detects this and says "Holy cow! The skin needs more sebum! Quick, produce a bunch more cholesterol and send out to the skin via the bloodstream!" And then the next day -- we wash it all off again! And so the liver goes into overdrive again - and then we wash it all off again! And again and again! Every day! As a result, your liver is almost constantly in emergency mode manufacturing replacement cholesterol to get the sebum back on the skin. And as a result, our bloodstream is constantly filled with too much cholesterol, where it eventually starts to stick to the walls, clog up the arteries, and cause heart disease. So the answer is: High blood cholesterol is caused by taking too many soapy showers! It is NOT -- I repeat, NOT - primarily caused by diet. (Further research showed that diet contributes maybe 10%-15% of blood cholesterol problems, but no more.) He then "went rogue" (he was forced to because his theory was too paradigm-breaking) and did small self-funded studies, following people with high-cholesterol and then putting them on a "no hot soapy showers diet." Result: They all got lower cholesterol readings! Even if food/diet was unchanged. This theory is still "unofficial" and considered a little too mind-bending to be part of the standard discussions, but those who look into it (and try it) have discovered it works, with amazing results. (Note: Showering WITHOUT soap is much better, because it is the soap that chemically removes the sebum.)

314 And don't forget the ass-crack! Use lots of soap there too. Shampoo is also OK because your scalp is really only a percent or two of your overall skin surface. So to amend #3 above: 3. When you do shower, try to limit soap use to the "stinky zones" -- underarms, crotch, ass-crack, feet, maybe neck/ears, hair. Otherwise, just use hot water on the majority of your body surface.

I think the Swedes (or was it the Swiss) have already revised their dietary guidelines to recognize low-carb.

For 30+ years, they've been pushing low fat and Americans have reduced their fat intake in response. In those same 30 years, obesity rates have *doubled*, diabetes has *tripled* and heart disease remains the number one killer.

  Obviously something ain't right.

The conclusion I've come to come to is the culprit is "fast carbs", refined sugars an starches that are absorbed quickly by the human body, spiking blood glucose and then insulin in response.

Sugars, breads, potatoes, etc. A Russet baked potato, for instance has a higher glycemic index than pure table sugar, actually. Cereals, etc.

If you read what they're finding, you'll find that spiking insulin/blood sugar is what triggers fat production (and your own cholesterol production). This is what drives the fasting lipid numbers in the wrong direction, not eating fats.

The human body needs so many calories and when you reduce the fat, you've got to replace it. In response to our idiot govt and other dietary haranging, we've cut that fat, but replaced it with the worst thing we could, fast carbs.

   nerdygirl ?

Since I'm a poor widower one of the rare luxuries I allow myself is takeout dinners. Usually Chinese or Mexican. It's delicious and always cooked fresh.

But know what? A Big Mac is not bad, either. As #4 mentioned? "I hate scolds." My theory has always been God has a great big Simplex time clock in the sky running on you. He punched you in, at birth. At some point? He'll punch you out.

Until then? "A thousand may fall at your right side, ten thousand at your left- but you will remain unharmed...."

And when God decides to punch you out? Not a thing of Earth can save you...

Life is to be lived, and enjoyed. My first wife dragged me to every 5-star restaurant she could find- and their meals were good.

My second? Was happy with bread toasted on a griddle and topped with fried corned-beef hash and a fried egg. It all was good.

317 Some experts, huh? I've been telling everyone I know for the past decade+ that in the context of a low-carb diet there is zero evidence of a connection between saturated fat and heart disease - and I'm no "expert." I like all of those caveats that say even though this study says what it says, don't go crazy and totally listen to it, and don't take the fat out of context with everything else. Where were these caveats all these years when they were telling us to load up on rice and pasta and that fat is going to kill us all in 18 months?

319 I've beaten this drum a million times now. Frankly, it doesn't matter a lick what you eat, just don't over indulge. I was 260 pounds and am now 225. What did I cut out of my diet? Nothing. I just stopped the buffets and work out more regularly. What's more, all the important health markets are way up our down as appropriate.

141 "I never understood the demonizing of pasta and bread when people in Italy consume incredible quantities of it, but are much slimmer than Americans on average. When I visited my wife's family in N. Italy the amount of bread consumed was staggering. According to the carb demonizers they should have all been dead 100 years ago, yet Italy remains. "

Exactly. Plus risotto and pasta. The frogs start the day off with a croissant and eat bread at every meal and yet they are much thinner than we are. The diet of poor people the world over consists largely of beans and rice. That's the biggest reason I don't buy this "carbs are the devil" crap.

The reason there are a zillion diets out there and "the experts" all contradict each other is because Americans love to declare one particular food group or ingredient Satan and they cut it out of their diets and 5 or 10 years down the pike everyone is fatter than they were before. We do demonization well - moderation not so much.

322 I'm sure there are plenty of people who use ADHD as an excuse because an ADHD diagnosis is one of the best ways to justify your loser ways and let yourself off the hook.

However, there are a LOT of people who are motivated, driven, intelligent people who have ADHD - they don't use it as an excuse, but they do recognize it as a disadvantage that has to be managed and accounted for.

I'm one of those people - I love to learn, read, write, but I have trouble following schedules and pacing myself to meet deadlines.

ADHD isn't really about being distracted by random things, it's about impaired executive functions and being really bad at estimating the time it takes to get things done. One of the leading experts says it should be renamed "time blindness".

I had terrible grades in school because I could never get my home work done - I would just lock up, unable to get the answers out consistently. Yet I was a very fast learner with an excellent memory - I scraped by getting A's on tests and F's on homework and projects.

Didn't go to college, but I hold down a six figure job at a fortune 50 company. I work from home and have almost complete control over my schedule. This works for me but I have a lot of times where I don't keep up and have to work late and cram to meet deadlines and if I had to be consistently punctual I would probably be homeless.

Nobody really understood ADHD when I was a kid and I wasn't hyper active, but I had a hell of a time getting school work done, despite wanting to do it. It's hard for people to understand a condition that inhibits your ability not to take in, process and understand, but to simply output the answers. Teachers would turn it into a moral problem and decide you were doing it "on purpose" (usually to make the teacher look bad - why I would do that, I still have no idea). Imagine how frustrated a crippled person would be if they were consistently told that they could walk, they just don't want to because they like screwing with everyone - that's how a lot of people with ADHD feel.

This is anonymous so I'll just say it - my shrink told me I was the highest IQ she had ever measured in her career. That was nice to hear, but there were a lot of good opportunities that were closed to me because I didn't understand why I had so much trouble applying myself - with no lack of desire or interest. It still feels crazy when I talk about it, but I've accepted it - intellect is not the only thing needed for certain life paths.

Late to the party, but...

ADHD: It's real, just overdiagnosed. A CAT scan of an ADHD brain and a "regular" brain reveals two different images entirely; SOMETHING is going on in there. ADD meds and other stimulants calm my brain down, they don't rev it up. I think unfortunately ADHD just becomes a catch all for behavior problems. It is also used as an excuse to aim lower in life, to not develop good manners, or to game the ADA system; which, as someone with legit ADD, really ticks me off.

Saturated fat: I have no prob believing this, we still do not understand all the ways our body actually uses the food we put in. Follow the money. Is the same with oils; the canola companies paid money for studies to say coconut and palm oils are eeevil. Now it turns out new studies say Omega 3's, which canola oil contains, might be bad for you. Just practice sensible eating, will be all right in the end.

325 ADHD guy, it sounds like one condition you certainly have is giftedness--which can be a curse as well as a gift--a whole other topic. Glad you were able to figure out a way to function in the world. What a shame that it had to be such an ordeal. I wonder if there is any program out there addressing the group I think of as the "X-Men"--gifted kids, usually guys, who had miserable high school careers and did not go to college. If there's a college out there interested in gathering up these 20-somethings from their pizza delivery jobs and parents' basements and giving them some mentoring by really smart people, they could start turning out some really interesting graduates.
