I Love You, Government, Part II: The Official Weather Forecast Failed to Predict a Tough Winter
— Ace

Prediction is a tough thing.

I don't really think it's terrible that government meteorologists failed to predict how tough, cold, and snowy this Global Warmening winter would be. Predicting the future, like hitting a curveball, is hard.

But, of course: I'm a bit skeptical when they move straight from one near-term failed prediction to a long-term prediction, also failed, at least for the last 17 years, and tell me "Serious You Guys you have to trust on this, the Science is Settled."

Surprised by how tough this winter has been? YouÂ’re in good company: Last fall the Climate Prediction Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted that temperatures would be above normal from November through January across much of the Lower 48 states. This graphic shows just how wrong the official forecast of the U.S. government was:

I don't even know what the hell this means
but this article says it's all f***ed up and its sh*t's all r****ded

The big red blotch in the top map represents parts of the country in which the Climate Prediction Center forecast above-average temperatures. The frigid-looking blue blotch in the bottom “verification” map shows areas where temperatures turned out to be below average.

“Not one of our better forecasts,” admits Mike Halpert, the Climate Prediction Center’s acting director.

...

Climatologists are trying to use their big miss this winter as a learning experience.

...

Oh that's lovely, I was wondering when they would.

I didn't quote a part of the article that notes that the accuracy of weather predictions is rated on a scale running from -50 to +100. Yeah I know, whatever. Well, the prediction about the first half of winter scored a -22 or -23.

For the latter half, they're now nearly "zero-ish" in terms of accuracy. So, big win on that big goose-egg.

Oh if only. Years and years of modeling and they still can't get the models to predict the past. They can't learn anything if they want to get to one goal and one goal only.

9 Which of the almanacs predicted this? That's not being snarky, I remember that one of them predicted how bad this winter would be, right down to a major storm in NJ right around the Super Bowl. Yes, yes, yes, climate isn't weather yadda yadda yadda. But it is valid to inquire as to why the programming on the long range climate forecasts would be correct when the programming on the near range forecasts is not. Also, I feel slightly bad for how amused I am by the fact that the chart is a near perfect inversion. HA HA! (Nice chew toy to throw the Horde, ace, though, if I might make a wee tiny suggestion, Uptons In Space is a wee bit more cromulent)

10 “Not one of our better forecasts,” admits Mike Halpert Ya think? now, what happened that your model didn't take into account?? now, it could be a matter of a statistical model getting turned sideways, but I wouldn't expect such an epic fail to be just due to statistics.

Constant revision of their theories to try to keep up with observable data that doesn't conform. Now, what does Occam's Razor suggest? That the whole initial premise is BS. If it weren't politically and financially beneficial to the people pushing it, it would have collapsed under its own weight and already be forgotten.

141 It's rare for me to even find an Environmental Alarmist who has the balls to discuss things beyond "YOU'RE A DENIER!" on those rare occasions, here are some of my favorite questions: Your theory is claiming an increase of something like 1 or 2 degrees celsius over the next, what, 20 years? And they say "Yes..." And I say, "so that requires an accuracy of, what, at least 95%, yes? Probably more like 98%, but do you agree that you are slicing things pretty thin - you really need accuracy for that?" And they don't answer, because they know I'm aiming at their face. "So, tell me, just 100 years ago, who was taking accurate temperatures in, say, the middle of Kansas? In 1914, who was taking reliable and regular temperature readings in the Amazon Jungle, or the Andes Mountains, or the Himalayas, or the Gobi Desert, or Saipan, or most of Alaska, or any of the other literally millions and millions of square miles where nobody lived?" And they give some bullshit answer, if any. "Who was taking ocean temperatures even 100 feet down, even ten miles offshore, in 1914? - anywhere in the world, who was doing that? Do you have that data, at all?" "So, if you are looking to predict CLIMATE, which is measured in centuries, and you don't have even 50 years of reliable data - what the fuck are you talking about? "Are you telling me that ice cores and tree rings are accurate enough as a proxy, for you to make claims with 98% or higher accuracy? "What, precisely do you know about math, science, or frankly anything? Because what you are proposing - to anyone with a shred of common sense, which many scientists do NOT have - is complete and utter bullshit. Even if you turn out to be correct, which I don't think you will, it would be complete luck. "Your 'science' is phrenology. You might as well be telling me about my health based on the bumps on my head..."

220 I look at the national weather map of current conditions and make my own guess for the day and maybe tomorrow. That's as far as I'll go, even looking at the five day forecast.

Speaking of which, the national map has been showing spring time weather patterns with weather systems blowing warm air north instead of arctic air south. In the north, there is still time to get three or four more winter storms, but the pattern has changed.

This means you folks in the heartland should get your tornado shelters cleaned out and stocked up.

257 One of the earliest accounts of the Thames freezing comes from AD 250, when it was frozen solid for nine weeks. As long ago as 923 the river was open to wheeled traffic for trade and the transport of goods for 13 weeks; in 1410, it lasted for 14 weeks. (this Little Ice Age lasted until the 19th century).

Printed on handbills at the frost fairs was this little ditty:

Behold the Liquid Thames frozen oÂ’re,
That lately Ships of mighty Burthen bore
The Watermen for want of Rowing Boats
Make use of Booths to get their Pence & Groats
Here you may see beef roasted on the spit
And for your money you may taste a bit
There you may print your name, tho cannot write
Cause num'd with cold: tis done with great delight
And lay it by that ages yet to come
May see what things upon the ice were done

In the winter of 1683 the Thames froze for 2 months. The people all protested climate change and asked for more taxes. Finally, after three more centuries or so, Mother Nature heard them until the new polar vortex came to town.*

267 @141 This. Meteorology, Climatology, not same.

Despite being a dreaded Humanities major (two of them, so I'm worse), I actually studied weather forecasting, in a college. A State University. It was an art, so that's why we had it in the College of Arts and Sciences, see? Before there was Earth Science, we had the modesty to call a program Physical Geography.

It's still an art. A whole lots, a bunch a, reporting stations, rented wires, and gooey displays have made the art easier to do, but basically you're still making wind roses, isobar and isotherm lines, with big H's and L's and arrows on them. Then you look for similar maps in the files, and see what happened next. So, with more data input, weather forecasts have gotten slightly better. Around the Great Lakes, you can be over 60% accurate out to 20 hours. Air being air, that is it.

We have a trillion dollars worth of "weather' satellites, and I'm so old I can remember when a trillion would impress people at a party. But they are not doing weather. Some are taking pictures to see if what you forecast really happened; the rest are "Climate," data collectors weaponized to use as ammunition in a war on liberty. We were fools to fund those. We were told we'd get forecasts better than 20 hours. If any of the people who sold those programs were still alive, they should be dug up and "compelled to breathe life into a dead thing."

That's awesome, Minnfidel. It's a good thing to drill the NRA safety rules into them at a young age. We all grew up primitive camping with my Dad way the hell up in Ontario on Georgian Bay, even my sister, so it's nice to see the younger generation picking up on it.

9 Which of the almanacs predicted this?

Farmers Almanac.

[In case no one has answered this yet. Sorry, late to the thread.]

Yep. Good ole Farmers Almanac predicted this would be an especially cold and wet winter season.

I read it last summer.

Posted by: joncelli at February 19, 2014 11:35 AM (RD7QR)

296 Farmer's Almanac's usually accurate predictions are made based on a host of factors with emphasis on solar activity. Others look mainly at CO2 levels in the atmosphere. Their predictions are uniformly horrible. There have been prolonged ice ages when atmospheric CO2 was many times current levels (approx 400 ppm with seasonal variation). The CO2 obsession now permeates articles on every possible scientific topic one can imagine. I can't recall an article on mass extinctions without speculation, however unsupported by evidence, that somehow CO2 was the culprit.

298 Predicting the future, like hitting a curveball, is hard. In fairness, hitting a curve is easy, when you know it's coming. When everything you know tells you that you're going to get a fast ball or a hard slider in this count, that's when Uncle Charlie makes you look like a spaz.

305 Based on recent winters and solar radiance, I had predicted an effing cold winter. I guess that means that I should return my physics and engineering degrees because I based my prediction on actual data instead of the manbearpig's Happyendingstick.

Maybe they've got an explanation for heir consistent "above average hurricane season" predictions since Katrina that doesn't involve political bullshit and wishing upon a star, but I doubt it.

Posted by: physics geek at February 19, 2014 12:00 PM (MT22W)

306 in fairness, I know less about baseball than a six year old girl. Heh. But the analogy still works because the weather predictors "know" that it's going to keep getting warmer, just like I 'knew' the pitcher would go to his overpowering fastball in this count, so they look even more like a spaz that someone standing at the plate with no idea of what's coming. See, you know more than you give yourself credit for.

307 Joe Bastardi at WeatherBell pretty much nailed this winter. He's big on mocking the AGW crowd, oto. Late to the thread, but this is what I was going to add. For anyone in the NE or mid-Atlantic, he makes the call many days in advance with great accuracy. I won't forget HC Sandy when he predicted landfall location about a week out and nailed the final location within 20 miles. I follow him on twitter because I love how he mocks the CO2 crowd. https://twitter.com/BigJoeBastardi

311 "I don't really think it's terrible that government meteorologists failed to predict how tough, cold, and snowy this Global Warmening winter would be. Predicting the future, like hitting a curveball, is hard. But, of course: I'm a bit skeptical when they move straight from one near-term failed prediction to a long-term prediction, also failed, at least for the last 17 years, and tell me "Serious You Guys you have to trust on this, the Science is Settled."" If you read their science literature they will admit in the articles to being greatly uncertain in many (read: all) of the mechanisms important to climate. The problem is that when PR time comes they pimp it as something known with absolute certainty, because as long as it's CO2 doomtime then the grant money gravy train can keep rolling.

The really funny part is the Farmer's Almanac got it right. (They predicted a really cold winter - which everyone scoffed at where I live when we had a really extended Indian Summer.)

313 "The Official Weather Forecast Failed to Predict a Tough Winter" That's OK. The Official Stimulus failed to predict a shovel-unready stagnation.

Posted by: BuddyPC at February 19, 2014 12:38 PM (jfUIE)

314 You can't blame them for failing. Our weather happens in a thin layer of turbulent atmosphere coupled with heat and humidity exchange to the layer of turbulent ocean underneath, and the underlying ocean layer goes through quasi-periodic oscillations where warm/cold water upwell and completely alter our weather. Meanwhile this is all mounted on a damn ball that's whirling in front of a ball of fire that heats it non-uniformly. In classical mechanics the 3 body problem is impossible to solve exactly, and in quantum mechanics it's impossible to solve the 2-body problem exactly. Now imagine predicting the weather and climate. /wrists

316 Seems to me that they covered 3/4 of the country in red, so like an astrologer's prediction, they could cover their bases. And they still managed to get it nearly all wrong. Should'a consulted the Farmer's Almanac, which warned of an unusually harsh winter.
