I Was Going To Write A Post, But I Got Distracted... - [Niedermeyer's Dead Horse]
— Open Blogger

There are two types of people: Those who only sometimes procrastinate those who are so inclined to it that it creates havoc in their lives. Lately, I tend to be the latter of the two. So, while I should have been practicing using MS Visio all day, half my day was spent here with you fine folks.

My procrastination has been so bad today that I actually researched "procrastination" in order to procrastinate a bit longer. Then, I tweeted about my procrastination in order to drag it out even further. Then, others joined in, and it was clear that I am far from the only one.

Well, the fine folks at The Next Web blog have posted a very timely article on the science of procrastination, and it makes all the sense in the world.

It's a fight or flight response.

The amygdala is the section of the brain associated with our automatic emotional reaction to a situation. In moments of being overwhelmed, such as having many tasks to do or a difficult one to do, there is a fight (resistance) or flight (ignore) reaction.

Both are procrastination – the brain is protecting us against possible negative feelings. The norepinephrine chemical takes over, causing increased levels of fear and anxiety. Adrenalin gets pumped in.

We are addicted to dopamine, which is produced by pleasurable experiences. So long as a task has a higher historical likelihood (or perceived future likelihood) of producing dopamine, our brain is addicted to reproducing these activitiesÂ… and avoiding the others.

Do you want to play Candy Crush or do tax returns? Yeah.

It occurs to me that, if we identify the cause, we can also mind-play our way through it. Perhaps we can tell ourselves repeatedly that the faster we get it over with the faster we'll feel relief that it is over. Or... perhaps we can stop hitting ourselves in the head with the hammer in the first place because procrastination seems to arise from fear... fear of failure, of rejection, of not being good enough and, frankly, isn't the world tough enough without us kicking the crap out of ourselves on a daily basis?

Tell them about it, Stuart.

6 I'll bet none of you pay $500.00 a month to procrastinate... I do, but there's a fix and all I have to do is fill out 100 pages of paperwork, in triplicate. Then mail it off to the kind State of Florida and send duplicates to the sheriffs Dept. in the county my ex lives in in CO so he can serve them, and then, maybe, the judge will stop my payments for child support to my ex as he's been living here since 2007. Yeah, I'm a regular glutton for punishment, a moron in good standing even.

14 Bad habits?  I'm not sure if being antisocial is a habit, but sometimes I think I'd like to break it.  I'm pretty much homebound, unless I'm at work.  I was always a homebody and crowd-phobic, but ever since my accident it has gotten much worse.

I guess I procrastinate actually working on it.

She is white with black spots all over like a spray. We had to call her Pepper. We ran over to Jersey to pick her up at a foster home. So far a wonderful handful.

107 My husband and I have had a lot of luck changing the "pleasure" reaction of having taxes done with the desire to procrastinate... all it really took was, first, deciding to hire someone to do it, and then second, to go to H&R Block the first day we've got all our W2's and things... taxes done in the first week of February and the tax refund back two weeks later. After a few years of doing it that way, he now does the taxes with Turbo Tax in the beginning of February. So far so good. But it still took those few years of having someone else do them, to get past the crushing dread and leaving it until April.

144 Things That Have Happened Since The Chicago Cubs Last Won The World Series

·  Radio was invented; Cub fans got to hear their team lose.

·  George Burns celebrated his 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, 90th and 100th birthdays.

Putin earns respect as a strong leader - not a nice one, not one who's going to improve the world or the lot of most of his citizens, over time - but a strong one.

Also - not reckless.  Not even close.  In historical perspective, very very average for a Russian leader.  He's securing Russian vital interests against change over which he has no control (chaos/move towards closer western integration in Ukraine).  He's not expanding the very long-standing footprint of Russian vital interests, not even a little bit.

For contrast, let's consider a strong - but reckless and aggressive - leader.  Saddam.   Easily the most reckless, aggressive, and dangerous leader since WWII (of any consequence).  Khrushchev?  Somewhat reckless, but readily reeled back in by a system that was quite cautious overall.  Brezhnev?  Pretty clear Moscow regarded A'stan as mostly a defensive move following Iran's revolution - expanding the footprint for its own sake was not the rationale. Islamic revolutionary Iran?  Unbelievably aggressive - yet the opposite of reckless .... cunning and careful to the level of art.

Saddam's regime was so reckless, it (in effect) attempted suicide three times (1980, 1990, and 2003).  They finally got it right the last time.  The degree of Saddam's recklessness/balls is barely understood.  The story of Bush the Elder's letter to Saddam (famously read and refused by Tariq Aziz in their Geneva meeting), and how Iraq aggressively crossed each of the red lines therein - for which the implied sanction was nuclear response - seems barely known even among the small number of people who were and are serious about Iraq (a minority even in these parts, sadly).  Iraq after 9/11 was a gigantic ominous loose end that any leader with any practical wisdom could not leave unaddressed.  But how even that obvious  fact could elude so many Americans, even now, is perhaps as good a place as any to start charting America's near-overnite transformation into a fundamentally unserious country.

Rusty is a tiny little green cheeked conure and current commander of Parrot Attack Squadron 7 (you have to say 7 so the enemy thinks there's 6 others) This morning, I was preparing the daily banana/corn/strawberry breakies for the monsters. Poured some apple juice. Turned around and who is bathing in my fruity juice drink? Yup. His first words: "you're so cute." now, I'm normally immune to his overt flattery, but this time... He's 6. Last time this happened he was 1, and I immediately bathed him in the sink. Today? It's on him. He figured it out and took the appropriate bath. "you're so cute" is met with a long stare, slow shaking of the head, but dammit I always fold. Parrot manipulation. It happens when you least expect it.

188 One thing that sometimes helps me with procrastination is setting a timer. I'll set the kitchen timer for ten minutes, then make myself start on whatever I've been putting off. I tell myself, " I can do this for ten minutes, ten minutes isn't a lot. Then I can stop." I have to play mind tricks on myself in order to get some things accomplished. Otherwise I get paralyzed.

191 Do tell us how you think the word "procrastinate" came into being?

I mean, it has "pro" in it, which means something is good, right? It's an affirmative. And what would you be "pro" about? Perhaps "Crast" was derived from "Christ"? And "Innate" comes from native, inborn, inherent?
So maybe, that means that To have an innate affirmation of Christ?

Well heck, now how can that be a bad thing? I think if somebody says that you've been procrastinating, you should thank them. Unless of course you're an Atheist, and then we'll just rethink this deal.

195 The fear of really bad consequences is a highly motivating factor, but ultimately, it comes down to being a disciplined person. I have worked hard my whole life to become more disciplined, and it has been a real struggle. I don't want to be a slub. But there comes a point in life where you realize that if I don't do x (homework, studying, networking, work out, etc.), someone else will, and they will get the benefit of x (job, cut abs, admittance to a prestigious university, etc.), and I will not. This is a very competitive world, and unfortunately, Americans have become increasingly lazy and leisure-seeking. We are like the spoiled trust fund babies of the world, and we all "want a yacht bought by you" (Dweezil Zappa).

225 NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told a Washington audience on Wednesday that Russia’s absorption of Crimea is a “wake-up call” for his organization. The alarm had best ring loudly, because NATO has been sleeping deeply.

The Russian aggression has led some Europeans to proclaim, “Thank God for NATO.” They assume that the organization formed during the Cold War to thwart any Red Army thrust across Western Europe will certainly protect them from a Russia that is increasingly behaving like its Soviet parent. Former Soviet satellite states are particularly nervous, and even Sweden, which for many years has done well enough on its own, has been so spooked by Russia’s Ukraine adventure and recent war games that it is talking about joining NATO.

The organization retains considerable luster from its early years, but its reputation is not in line with reality. An honest appraisal of NATOÂ’s capabilities will quickly find that most of its European members have let their militaries fall into such disrepair that NATO, in terms of accomplishing military missions, is nothing more than a horseless Tonto, while the United States remains the Lone Ranger.

227 So today our Scout troop helped picked up trash for two hours in the Red Clay Creek watershed in northern New Castle County. Briefly put, this is the region of large homes on large acreages (think former DuPont estates, for example). For all I know, VP Joey Choo-Choo's manse is located there. As we are working in the rain, the thought occurred to me: "Why don't all the swells who live here pick up this trash along their own GD highways and biways?" I mean, me, the missus and neighbors pick up litter that shows up in our neighborhood, so why don't they? Short answer, at least from my point of view, is they probably feel such a task is beneath their exalted status and pressing priorities. Besides, the proles will drop by once a year to do it for them because... Erf Day! Asshats.

230 Rome (AFP) - Vatican police on Saturday apprehended an American and a Dutch man who were trying to deposit billions of euros and US dollars in fake bonds in the Vatican bank.

The men were stopped by the police when they approached one of the guarded gates at the Vatican and asked to be let through to the Institute for Religious Works (IOR) as the bank is formally known, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told AFP.

The bonds were discovered in a briefcase they were carrying and the men were handed over to Italy's financial police, who found false passports and other fake documents in their hotel rooms.

287 There for a while, before he decided to get on with his life, my oldest boy used to make a nice piece of change picking up trash from down the old dirt roads. Washing machines and old stoves, engine blocks, bags and bags of cans...he'd sell them for the scrap metal and have pocket money for the week.

288 278 243 Asshats. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars™ I know what you are saying. I live on a county road, not high rent area by any means. Assholes from the city use it as a dump. Christmas trees, lawn cuttings, engine blocks and anything you can imagine. I pick up trash in front of my property and the county comes around a couple times a year and picks up some crap. Most of it just sits there and looks ugly. Posted by: Ronster at March 29, 2014 10:24 PM (puNd6) Same. Let me catch one of those fuckers dumping their shit on my road. yes. it's my road. 289 PHILADELPHIA - State officials shut down a Philadelphia day-care center run by the man at the heart of a political-corruption scandal Friday, a day after a surprise inspection found that children there were potentially endangered.

Public Welfare Department officials cited conditions that created a likelihood of an "immediate and serious danger to the life or health" of children at the Logan Child Care and Resource Center at 4802 N. Broad St.

The center is owned by Tyron Ali, an undercover operative who sources say taped five Philadelphia Democrats accepting cash or gifts.

Yeah, dick move on my part, but up until then he just naturally expected that I'd get him out of trouble, and I had already told him, he was 30 years old and it was way past time for him to stand on his own two feet.

304 FRANKLIN, Pa. (AP) - A northwestern Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to house arrest and work release for using his neighbor's Wi-Fi connection to download child pornography onto his home computer.

The charges against 28-year-old Jordan Astrove, of Oil City, resulted from a raid by Oil City police and state agents on his neighbor's home last June. The officers went there because illegal pornography had been traced to an Internet address at that home - though police were unable to find any pornography on the neighbor's home computers.

Investigators later determined Astrove had accessed the Wi-Fi signal without his neighbor's permission.

Okay. I am calling bullshit on this story. We are not being told all the facts.

Mr Ali owns the centre. It is possible, I'll even call it probable, that his establishment was a hellhole. But it doesn't take 24 hours to create a hellhole, nor does it take 24 hours to prove it is one. But it might just take 24 hours for state officials, after getting the nod, to shut the dump down.

And Mr Ali was on a government payroll. Whose payroll, we are not told - I have to assume, not Philly's or Pennsylvania's.

=> the Feds were paying Mr Ali to run a hellhole for kids, on the Greater Good of nabbing crooks in Philly.

I saw him once, no shit, in a bar in San Diego, this would have been 92 or 93. I snuck in before they started charging the cover and stayed until closing. Wow, what a show, and I was stunned he was playing some bar (it wasn't a dive, it was one of those trendy country line-dance places that got so popular for a little while) like a local band instead of some big arena, but that's the kind of guy he was.

346 Hundreds gathered to remember Mateus Moore, a 16-year-old musician who pushed his girlfriend from the tracks as an oncoming train approached.

Both were struck, but Mickayla Friend, 16, who was badly injured, is now breathing on her own and even walking less than 48 hours after Friday night's accident.

The happy couple, who were walking southbound on the train tracks next to Earle Yorton Little League Park, didn't hear the horn and didn't know the train was coming until it was too late.

Sandy Friend said her daughter Mickayla told her Mateus pushed her as hard as he could to get her out of harm's way.

"I'm so grateful that she is here, but my heart is so heavy," Sandy said. "He (Mateus) stood for everything that is right."
