In an Administration of Lying Incompetents, Jay Carney Manages to Distinguish Himself Yet Again

Baghdad Bob just emailed me to say "This kid has chops."

Confronted with the newly-released emails in which White House National Defense Fixer Ben Rhodes stated the most important goal (following reassuring the public that the president was devoted to protecting the American people and fundraising in Las Vegas) was...

To underscore that these protests are rooted in an Internet video, and not a broader failure of policy.

...Jay Carney insists that that goal refers to the protests in Cairo, not Benghazi. Or, as Carney says, it was about "the overall environment in the Muslim world."

Of course, there's also this quote from the Talking Points Q & A:

Q: What's your response to the Independent story [they mean the UK newspaper the Independent -- ace] that says we have intelligence 48 hours in advance of the Benghazi attack that was ignored? Was this an intelligence failure?
We are not aware of any actionable intelligence indicating that an attack on the U.S. Mission in Benghazi was planned or imminent. The currently available information suggests that the demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests at the US Embassy in Cairo and evolved into a direct assault against the US consulate and subsequently its annex.

Karl points out that Carney has repeatedly insisted from the White House spokesman podium that these claims came from the CIA, not the White House.

I don't understand Carney's response to this. He only says, basically, this has all been answered before.

He has no answer as to why the White House held this email back.

The White House's claim has been (for eighteen long months of lies) that whatever misrepresentations entered the talking points, and whatever truths departed from them (such as evidence that this was an Al Qaeda attack, that there had been previous attacks, that there had been previous warnings, etc.), it had nothing to do with the White House, as other people, not anyone in the White House, constructed the talking points.

Now comes this email from Ben Rhodes telling Ambassador Rice to go out there and sell the Internet Video cover story and so what does Jay Carney do?

He claims the talking points weren't about Benghazi.

Exit Quote: "If you look at the document in question, it is not about Benghazi."

Second Exit Quote: "The currently available information suggests that the demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests at the US Embassy in Cairo and evolved into a direct assault against the US consulate and subsequently its annex."

Third Exit Quote: After a year and a half of vigorously insisting the White House had no input into these Talking Points -- that all information came from the CIA and FBI -- Carney now says "obviously" the White House had input into the Talking Points.

Even if Carney was telling the truth about the e-mail it only shows more incompetence  from the WH and State Department  as he admits that they were monitoring the protests that had occurred elsewhere .    That it never occurred to them that  9/11    may be some sort of significant date that  terrorists may attempt  something more than a protest  is the height of incompentence and failure of policy.

563 Reading a very interesting book by ex CIA security/polygraph agents titled "Spy the Lie" and Jay Carney has every "tell" in the book. Some of the ones not as intuitively obvious as others are attacking the questioner, and "referral" statements (in which Jay indulges quite a bit) e.g. "as I've mentioned in my prior briefings..." or "If you'd attended the Conference on Friday...") This last verbal tic of The Carney qualifies as both attacking the questioner and deceptive "referral" statement, and is basically his signature preface to any answer to a tough question. He also, often, displays "inappropriate" and "discordant" body language and emotional responses to the questions (e.g. inappropriately smiling/smirking to a serious question). There is no magic formula, but the guy is a walking case study in the tics and tactics of a LIAH! His boss is in another catagory. Probably too much of a narcissist/sociopath to fall into conventional markers of stress and evasion --but you knew that.

Pointless I know, but imagine - try to imagine - the unbelievable supernova of hysteria and outrage and 24/7 "coverage" if anything - anything - approaching this sort of disastrous incompetence with a body count accompanied by brazen lies and bizarre indefensible actions (perp-walking the video producer with the media there so that the Muslim world could see it on their "news") occurring in the Bush years.

 

And, of course, such hysteria and outrage would be perfectly appropriate.  This package of disaster and mendacity has no analogues I can think of in post-war US history (I'm thinking specific contained incidents, not big policies stretching over years).

 

But in the Bush years, we had nearly a 24/7 maelstrom of hysteria, outrage, and calumnies against the country and the leadership based on ..... absolutely nothing. 

 

So effective was this tsunami of lies and distortion that a significant portion of the morons here - including some of the more substantive ones - actually swallowed this poison and can be seen regurgitating it here on occasion.

 

There is no hope.  Just a few weeks ago, while in my normal don't-discuss-any-public policy-topic-especially-those-in-which-I-actually-have-a-lifetime's-experience mode, at a dinner party, the host (a good guy, but a classic victim of the ocean of misinformation the American public square has become) broached Benghazi, to say something about the NYT article that claimed AQ was not involved.

(deep, kiloton-force facepalm) The article was debunked by the NYT itself within the month, of course, but in any case the point he made was not just obviously false, but irrelevant.  As if AQ involvement was a key matter.  But of course I had to mumble/deflect somehow, can't recall what I said.   To even attempt a rescue of this guy, by educating him on even the basics of the real world, as opposed to his make-believe NYT/NPR/pop culture world, is far beyond the scope our friendship.  And his wife is worse.

Oh, and I'm not sure about this, but I think that Peckerhead Carney was being just a tad condescending to Jon Karl. (And good for JK for pursuing the weasel as doggedly as he did.)
