In the beginning was the Word
— Monty

[bumped by BenK: This is worth a read for those who missed it last night]

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. - John 1:1

This is what I have to say about the SOTU, and every other content-free political speech and op-end we're going to have inflicted on us from here on out:

There is a price to be paid for divorcing actions and concepts from the words that describe them. Government, and the law that undergirds it, is made up of words. Devalue the words, strip them of meaning, and you do the same thing to the concepts those words describe. Action follows Thought, and for Thought to exist there must be the Word.

This was George Orwell's central insight when he invented Newspeak for his novel 1984. Language doesn't just describe what we think about, and allow us to communicate with each other; in a major way, it actually determines what we think about, and how we think. We conceptualize the way we do, even in the abstract, using constructs of language - even mathematics and computer code is a kind of language. Orwell understood that the Word could actually be turned into a weapon, an invisible knife to cut away a man's ability to think (and thus, to act). All you have to do is convince a man that the Word he's hearing means something other than what he thought it meant...or can mean anything, really. Or nothing at all. Science, history, literature, even music -- they evaporate like a puddle in the hot sun because the Words used to build them stop conveying meaning.

Words have meaning. They must have meaning, for if we are to communicate at all we must transmit meaning from one person to another. This is perhaps the most unforgivable part of the postmodernist assault on the language itself: it has weakened our ability to even describe the loss of meaning.

If a Word can mean anything, it means nothing. Think of that while his Majesty the King speaks tomorrow night.

64 There is another "In the beginning" verse, the famed opening line of the Bible: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." John's "In the beginning," while appearing much later in the scriptures, takes us back to a starting point before the Big Bang of creation. And what was there? The Word. Actually, the Greek here is "logos" and it could be rendered "the logic" or even, "law." Scientists can peer back to the first "In the beginning" but no further. Stephen Hawking admits there must have been some laws in place before the universe sprang into being. He's right. It was "the Word" who "became flesh and dwelt among us."

All you have to do is convince a man that the Word he's hearing means something other than what he thought it meant...or can mean anything, really.

132 I have been over at the Blaze and there has been a rash of religious articles which made me go read some Nietzsche. And it finally hit me. The Concept of God is dead to Modern Man, thoroughly dead. God used to be the center of Western Civilization for about 2,000 years and that is no more, has been since the 1800s. Without that pillar gone, what can we replace that pillar with? We say our rights come from God, but since God is Dead we have no origin for our rights. No reason to back them up. Where do we go from here?

Even his fan base are getting bored. Welcome to Lameduckistan, the worst quagmire any President can ever experience.

Meanwhile, the Obamacare numbers continue to look utterly horrible in every regard. That will be the real elephant in the room -- or in the chamber -- during the SOTU.

244 I'm reminded of the whole 'words have meaning' meme every time I hear a democratic strategist answer a question on M. Kelly's show. They drone on and on and everything they say has nothing to do with the question and it is also all, in point of fact, lies and yet no one ever says, "you are a liar' and runs a tape to prove it. How many people simply stop listening to these people altogether? It reminds me of a good friend I had for decades. He would occasionally say something to me so demonstrably false and Left-speak that eventually I started gently countering his BS with facts. He would simply turn on a dime and start talking about something else as if nothing had ever happened. Eventually he had no cogent arguments for anything he believed other than that he had read things on Kos or PuffHo or whatever and we stopped talking altogether. His choice and not mine. Now he drinks heavily, his wife hides the liquor and he only talks to people who repeat the same things to each other. This is no basis for a thriving Society. This is DOOM.

Long time ago I took an oath--just as so many of you here have.

There is no expiration date on it.  We are BOUND by it.

Those who did not take the oath are as strictly bound to it by virtue of being free people.

Fulfilling that oath does not always mean picking up a weapon. THAT is the very last resort.

We CAN and WILL restore the country to what it is yet, under the layer of filth laid on it.

Deeply insightful, Monty. I consider myself an Orwell disciple, at least insofar as he wrestled with language and its use by men who would make slaves of us.

I hate postmodernism and its nihilistic, hateful undercurrents, especially its impact on the arts. A postmodernist artist looks at, say, Michelangelo's 'David', for example, and shrugs, and says, 'So what?' Followed, of course, by an hours-long boorish dissertation in unintelligible artspeak on the meaninglessness of it all. And he does this, I think, out of plain old envy. All of them do. If there is no good or bad art, then all art is equal; thus, that piece of shit performance piece of his is as "good" (always with scare quotes) as anything painted, sculpted, written, composed or said by any of those dead, white, patriarchal bastards whose talents he knows down deep he doesn't and can never hope to possess.

265 There is (or at least was,, back in the '60s) a tribe somewhere in the South Pacific (Melanesia I believe) that had the most primitive language that anthropologists had ever encountered. They had only something 500 or 600 words TOTAL in their vocabulary. They did not have the concept of subsidiary clauses, such that every sentence had to be a single declarative statement with no modifying clauses of any kind (unlike this one). Strangest of all was their counting system, which had just four numbers: One Two Three Many There were several questions surrounding this tribe and their language (forgive me if I can't recall their name -- I haven't studied them since my college days), but most of all was: Do they have a limited language because they are (to strip away all PC euphemisms) stupid, or are they stupid because they have a limited language??? Oh, I forgot to mention: They scored absolutely abysmally on IQ tests (even the non-verbal kind). Like, in the 50s and 60s (which at that time was the same level as [again with the un-PC] "profoundly retarded." So some anthropologists tried an experiment: they taught some of them English, and also tried to teach them basic math. Result? Disaster. The tribespeople took the English words and created a new type of "pidgin" which had the same primitive grammar as their original language, just with new words substituted. And the math experiment was even worse. They could not even begin to comprehend basic arithmetic. Any sum or result beyond three remained beyond their comprehension. Forever. I don't remember if the westerners went so far beyond anthropological ethics to teach young children from the tribe math and English, which would have been more revealing since young minds are more pliable. But in the end the conclusion to be made from this is that there is no obvious "chicken or egg" in this cause and effect: It is likely a circular logico-evolutionary downward spiral where some smidgin or original stupidity lead to a primitive language which lead to a situation where advanced intellectual thought was not valued nor provided any social or evolutionary benefit, which lead to more stupid kids being born, and down through the generations. (This of course is in stark contrast to Hebraic/Jewish culture which, as Genesis reveals, was EXTREMELY language-centric, and in which complex intellectual achievements were valued, which lead to an upward spiral of intelligence in the population, leading to the high-IQ Jews of today.) Orwell predicted and Stalin and the Obama-ites enacted that if we purposely impoverish our language we can create new generations of easily controlled morons. Which, I believe, is their goal.

268 More from Bastiat: "But, unfortunately, law by no means confines itself to its proper functions. And when it has exceeded its proper functions, it has not done so merely in some inconsequential and debatable matters. The law has gone further than this; it has acted in direct opposition to its own purpose. The law has been used to destroy its own objective: It has been applied to annihilating the justice that it was supposed to maintain; to limiting and destroying rights which its real purpose was to respect. The law has placed the collective force at the disposal of the unscrupulous who wish, without risk, to exploit the person, liberty, and property of others. It has converted plunder into a right, in order to protect plunder. And it has converted lawful defense into a crime, in order to punish lawful defense. "

pg xxi  Influence of languages on problem solving
The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is a (still controversial) linguistic theory that states that the structure of language defines the boundaries of thought. While there is no evidence that the use of a particular language will prevent us from thinking certain thoughts, it is the case that a given language can facilitate or impede certain modes of thought. When applied to programming languages, the analogous statement is that while no programming language can prevent us from finding certain solutions to a problem, a given language can influence the class of solutions we are likely to see.

Posted by: jc at January 27, 2014 10:32 PM (PlzOe) I can think of several factors influencing the 85% rate of voting for Democrats, but I think it's too involved to get into here. I will point out that last week someone made a comment in the threads regarding an aspect of this I hadn't considered before. He said he was Jewish, and his family came from mainland Europe as opposed to Western Russia. He said most of the Jews in the United States came from families who left Russia, while much fewer came from Europe because of the Nazi Genocide. He said that if we had had a greater influx of European Jewry they would vote more conservative, but he said Jews from Russia came with too much socialistic baggage from the very beginning. I don't know if what he said is true, but it is an interesting theory which I had not before contemplated. I know the Orthodox tend to vote conservative, and I also know their population is increasing while the Conservative and Reform Jewish populations are showing decline. Give it time, and I think we will make gains in that Demographic. I just hope it's not to late.

These politicians know they are Ckufing us and the use all these weasel words to obfuscate their intent.

And this leads me to the Putin vs Obama image.

Putin rides a Polar bear to convince his countrymen to follow him through power (or fear).
Obama rides a Weasel to confuse his countrymen to follow him.

I was a student at UMKC and lived close to the Country Club area (google country club shhopping district KC) and it was fun to wathc a national political convention. There were a lot of expensive loafers without socks. Lts of TV, anchors you sa on TV. Very coo for a country boy. Anyway, I watched  Reagan's car arrive at his hotel, he jupemed on top of the car and spoke to the crowd for 30 minutes or so. It was obvious that this guy was a star. I knew nothing about him but he OWNED the crowd. Oblabla, not so much.

369 The socialist streek is strong in them because it can work for small, homogenous cultures. For centuries in Europe they lived as self contained colonies, it got burned in. Israel is a very socialist country, very socialist with guns and a sense of national purpose. Posted by: Julius Ceaser at January 27, 2014 10:42 PM (4JkHl) Socialism is actually a form of government designed as a very big extended family. That communist doctrine of "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" is an exact description of how families are supposed to work. The only flaw in the theory is that degree of human concern necessary to make such a system work doesn't normally extend beyond the normal circle of family and friends. With Jews having been persecuted for Centuries, they probably feel a stronger familial/tribal kinship beyond the immediate relatives, and it is perhaps reflected in their political preferences.

371 @361.  Wealth, especially when you grow up with it, has a way of insulating you from reality...  how business works, how people earn money, and so on.  In the midst of not having to worry about important things, you obtain the ability to worry about all kinds of other things.  Like how other people live their lives.  Anyone who's ever struggled to put food on the table isn't that worried about things like gay marriage or global warming.  It takes a certain level of idle comfort to be able to get worked up into a lather about things that don't pertain to survival and the ability to keep surviving.  Insulation from reality is what makes being a Leftist possible.

We now know that their idea of 'reform' is, in reality, a clusterfuck of epic proportions designed to do as much widespread harm as possible.

Individuals in leftist totalitarian systems are fungible, leveled, interchangeable. There is no hierarchy. The Western notion of the family is an inherently hierarchical arrangement wherein each member has a distinct role according to their place in the hierarchy, and what is expected of them is to fulfill the responsibilities of that role. Hence the constant leftist struggle to annihilate the family (hierarchy) and replace it with the State (equality).

Jewish tendencies to go leftist in the last few centuries go deeper than that.

384 I got my undergraduate degree in neurolinguistics and I'm here to tell you that there are no reputable neuroscientists that take the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis seriously. Of course what we put into our minds affects our thought process to varying degrees, but the notion that words hold sway over the mental faculties that contain them is just not supported by modern biological research. In fact, it flies in the face of it. Whorf claimed that certain eskimo tribes, because they had more than 10 "unique" words for snow, could actually perceive and conceptualize snow in a way other groups of humans could not. Similarly, he claimed that certain indian tribes that had robust and specific vocabularies for various colors could in fact see a different spectrum of color than other humans. To a neuroscientist that breaks down to; the word that is taught to a child somehow (i.e. magic) causes the retinal ganglion cells to undergo a biochemical change that allows for photons of light to be interpreted in a fundamentally different way. This does not happen. Modern neurolinguistics seeks to better understand the innate mechanisms that we have evolved that allow us to learn and manipulate language in order to express our mental processes to one another. However, it is universally accepted among neuroscientists of all flavors that language processing is confined to specific areas of the brain, and that higher cognitive functioning can take place in their absence (damage, or complete removal).

387 This, of course, would be common knowledge if you were a regular visitor at "Protein Wisdom" Of course words have meaning. It has been the lefts goal to to redefine meaning to their advantage. Which is why, as conservatives, we have an obligation to call them on it at every opportunity. IE; The Affordable Care Act. It is neither affordable or about care. 388 It must be noted that to liberals, the very essence of reality has been internalized in a malleable and plastic form, so that thoughts, memories, reason and interaction, indeed every aspect of existence exists to satisfy whim and desire. The external world only exists to be the bricks and mortar from which to sample, construct and maintain the internal reality. In the process, these people not only destroy the truth of the real world, they consume it. If the real world is reality itself, these people lie first to themselves, then they lie to everyone else they interact with. They associate with each other only to the extent that they need each other to perpetuate commonly held lies and desires. They have no principles, indeed they cannot have principles. They are very dangerous when allowed to have positions of power.

Yep, not sure if it's been pointed out, but you can't have an opposing thought if you don't have the language to express it or for that matter, even form the thought.

Orwell made the point in one of the appendices to 1984.  The meaning of the term "free" was limited to a sentence like "the dog was free from fleas."  It had no political connotation in Oceania whatsoever.  Smith couldn't think of himself as wanting to be free because for him, the very term "free" had no real meaning in that context.  He might as well have said he wanted to be desk.

This assault on language has been going on for a loooong time though.

Derrida and Foucault were rage rage against the light of not only the entirety of French history and literature but also the construct of the French language itself. Attempting to move their interpretative methodology to an alternate language structure, because, after all, deconstructionism is every bit as structured an approach as those approaches it attempts to supplant, does not work because those other languages do not necessarily have as formal of a structure. To steal from Paglia, the best deconstructionists in the world are the Marx brothers because film is a forum that lends itself to both formality of structure and the deconstruction thereof. Tarantino's entire career (and/or schtick depending on what you think of him) is based on putting a genre in a blender and pressing puree. Hell, the South Park movie is a prime example of the use of deconstruction to advance art. Bigger, Longer and Uncut is a Disney movie. It is. The beats of the plot, where the songs are located, what the songs are about, the arrangement of the acts, it follows the exact format of every Disney movie ever. Just. You know. Ridiculously profane and turning it on its ear. Deconstruction works in film because the structure of pacing and plot is pretty much universal. It doesn't in literature because the structure of written language is not. The point of lit crit is to advance the meaning of the work, not bury it under jargon. That whatshisname could autogenerate a submission to a journal and then get it published and no one thought for a second that hey something's up tells you all you need to know about the current state of pomo lit crit.

And my take away from the conversation is totally different then his.

It's as if we don't speak the same english.
And I find the same thing taking place all over.

Words used to have definitive meanings.
Anymore, it's a flexible and constantly changing set of definitions.

And, I don't think it is by accident.

453 From Marginal Revolution: If you actually take a close look at the numbers, it turns out that of the people who identified as middle class in 2008, nearly a third of them now identify as lower middle or lower class.1 This is even more dramatic than it seems. Class self-identification is deeply tied up with culture, not just income, and this drop means that a lot of people—about one in six Americans—now think of themselves as not just suffering an income drop, but suffering an income drop they consider permanent. Permanent enough that they now live in a different neighborhood, associate with different friends, and apparently consider themselves part of a different culture than they did just six years ago. - See more at: http://marginalrevolution.com/#sthash.xWTwdgDb.dpuf

RE: Deconstructionist post-modernism.

I have several times told the story about one of my    university interpersonal communication classes in which the professor -- a big ole lib -- was   waxing lyrical    about   deconstructionist theory and post-modernism.

"Look at that wall.   If you were to knock it down, would it still be a wall?"

MWR: (internally)  Yes.  It would just be a knocked down wall.

"What if you chose to sit on the bits of broken masonry?  couldn't you call them chairs?"

MWR: (internally) No.  They are      broken pieces of wall.     We call it "rubble," if you must know.   You may sit on rubble.  You may turn rubble into furniture.  But I would no more call a cinder block a chair    than   I'd    call a Chesterfield sofa a    brick.

It was the most laugh out loud bit of frippery in a class that was full of such things.

473 OT Nevergiveup Late last spring, retired general Peter Chiarelli, who had just finished his term as the Army's vice chief of staff, visited Carroll at the Seattle Seahawks headquarters. Chiarelli was expecting a pleasant meeting. After all, the pair had what important businesspeople tend to call synergies: Chiarelli—who grew up in Seattle—is a big Seahawks fan. His post-military work concerns traumatic brain injury research, a cause of some significance to the NFL. And both have plenty of experience leading groups of men on grand American stages. The sit-down between Chiarelli and Carroll started off normally enough. They talked about the team, and then about head trauma. Chiarelli, who commanded the American forces in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom II, talked about the brain injuries he had seen there. But Chiarelli's mention of Iraq sent Carroll in another direction: He wanted to know if the September 11 attacks had been planned or faked by the United States government. In particular, Carroll wanted to know whether the attack on the Pentagon had really happened. Chiarelli—who was the top-ranking Army official inside the Pentagon when American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into its western side—explained that it had. He said he had lost many colleagues. But Carroll didn't stop there. He ran through the whole 9/11 truther litany. "Every 9/11 conspiracy theory you can think of, Pete asked about," said Riki Ellison, the former NFL linebacker who now runs the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance and introduced Carroll to Chiarelli. Ellison, along with Seahawks offensive line coach Pat Ruel, was at the meeting as well. "And he didn't stop at 9/11—he had lots of questions about the role of the military today." (Carroll does seem to have some fondness for the military. He lectured at a military-sponsored "conference on small unit excellence" in 2009, and last year Ellison connected him with Army soldiers at Camp Carroll in Korea.) Carroll isn't crazy, Ellison said. He's just skeptical. "Pete grew up in California during Vietnam, and during Watergate. That's just the perspective he brings to the table." So did the discussion last year turn hostile? A source close to Chiarelli, one who wasn't present when he spoke to Carroll, told us that it did. He said the general had to leave the room because Carroll had rankled him so thoroughly. Ellison told us that that wasn't true, that the discussion had remained friendly and "fun" throughout. A spokesman for Chiarelli at his foundation, One Mind for Research, did not respond to repeated phone and email requests. from deadspin

507 The perpetuation of the false narratives by the MFM, the academy, and Public Education, whether it be AGW, War on Women, AA and Reparations, PRO CHOICE instead of INFANTICIDE or FETUS-CIDE and so on, has been the single biggest factor in this country's slide into the abyss. Until that condition is dramatically altered there is zero chance of recovery. Leftists can't just be defeated, they must be permanently destroyed.

508 499 How did the word "bougie" make it into "urban" culture? Based off of "bourgeoisie", a construct of K*rl M*rx, it's a common aspersion which means thinking you're in (or aspiring to) a higher class than you really are. But how did it get there? Posted by: Mega at January 28, 2014 12:13 PM (hHFOx)

I first heard it on Glee *spits* but it must have stemmed from somewhere else first. I'm pretty sure the kids using it just think it means evil rich ppl, or grappling social climbers, they have no idea from where it really stems, the darker implications. Which just ties back into Monty's whole point of his post.

Conservatives tend towards the more tangible based work-products with the exception being security and defense. Liberals tend towards the abstract and non-tangible work products. Lawyering, Teaching, Acting, Reporting, etc.

They can't wait to get their hands on it. All the touchy feely BS works for the LIVs (soccer moms and beta male douches). Let's see how it works when they want their retirement money

512 One of the things that I notice missing in conversation is what I call measurable words.
For example;

Me;  What time do you want to get up?
He:  Early

Me: What time is early?
He:  You know..earlier then last week.

Me: At what time tomorrow morning can I still see you in bed, and know that you are in bed later than you wanted?
He:  I don't know.

-----------------------------------------

School Official: He is in danger of performing below standards
Me: What are the standards?
S.O: They are the scores below which his performance is not acceptable
Me: I get that. Is there a letter or number grade indexed to that point?
S.O: It varies

And on and on and ...oh look, a shiny object.

515 471 "Progress" now means less energy usage, more land off-limits to human development, and economic stagnation.     The problem is one of attitude, perspective and memory.   I have a National Geographic Magazine from 1912.  A story in it recounts the U.S.' consumption of raw materials and production of goods and observes that both were very disproportionately large in comparison to America's relatively small portion of the world's population.

The writer recounted those facts with pride and as a measure of achievement; as a boast.  He certainly made no apology for that.

But then he probably could remember a time when America was not the world's largest economy.

Affording to disparage progress is probably the greatest signal of luxury there can be.

518 I like it when they say "No one is pro-abortion". If you've never heard of an abortion you're against; not late term abortion, sex selection abortion, "right sizing" abortion, abortion for birth control, or minor abortion, then I'd say you pretty much are pro-abortion.

523 The simple fact of the matter is that our country has been, for centuries, one based on the  notion that Truth is actually "truth" that depends on the choice of belief of the individual.  That is, basically, relativism.  Though the concept of there being Truth clung to the West for a long time, the degeneration of that idea, that there is a Truth, a Reality (what it may be is a matter of faith, but there that there IS one that is NOT dependent on the individual) has eroded.  Over the last century, century and a half or so, that erosion has only quickened.  This starts with the root of egocentrism at the very heart of Western Culture, based in the accelerated emphasis of the individual in determining "truth" brought on by the so-called Enlightenment.

In other words, this development was inevitable.  Once the culture, on the whole, abandoned the idea of there being one Truth for the sake of many "truths" (which started long before the so-called Enlightenment).  The individual rose as paramount in the individual worldviews of people, deposing the notion of absolutes that exist, and originate, outside the individual.

Over time this gap invariably widens.  And what we have now is what you get: an utterly egocentric culture.  This is how you give birth to radical secular humanism, to "theories" like Derrida's deconstructionism that seeps back into the culture that destroys things like words having meaning that don't change with the person.  These are all just symptoms of the greater disease.
