Is The GOP Preparing To Cave On ObamaCare Repeal? Is The GOP Preparing To Cave On Amnesty? GOP To Get Their Moderate Dream Candidate In Virginia.
— DrewM

A few morning quick hits:

1. Could The GOP Actually Give Up On Repealing ObamaCare?

Short answer...of course. It's the GOP for crying out loud.

Longer answer: Erick Erickson makes a strong case that the groundwork is being laid for just such a cave. The groups that are siding with the GOP establishment in the ongoing intra-party wars are accommodating themselves to "fixing" not "repealing and replacing" ObamaCare. It's not a huge stretch to expect that their allies in the GOP will follow along in due course.

Yes, most Republicans continue to say the right things, but they always say the right things before they do the wrong ones. Case in point...the sequester spending caps were supposed to be sacrosanct or traded for some big entitlement reform. How'd that work out?

This is why it's important to keep the pressure on "the establishment" from the right and not buy into their "focus on Democrats" nonsense. Left to their own devices the GOP will...go left. Every time.

We talk more about that on this week's podcast with Washington Examiner reporter Tim Carney. He covers a lot of this "establishment" vs. "tea party" stuff, so follow him on Twitter if you don't already.

2. Could The GOP Cave On Amnesty?

I'm not even sure it's a cave at this point since so much of the party leadership and donor base wants it but let's pretend for the moment it would be.

How could the GOP cave and still claim they didn't? Just get a little pregnant with amnesty.

[House Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert] Goodlatte has said he would instead offer a provisional legal status to illegal immigrants, then allow those who can demonstrate they are eligible to apply for permanent residency — a document known as a green card — through the existing system, based on sponsorship by a family member or an employer. Obtaining a green card is the crucial step toward American citizenship.

The foundationÂ’s report, prepared by Stuart Anderson, its executive director, finds that even without major changes to current immigration law, 3.1 million to 4.4 million immigrants now illegally in the United States would be eligible for green cards because they are parents of American citizens. As many as 600,000 could gain green cards as spouses of citizens and legal residents, and up to 45,000 could receive green cards within two decades as low-skilled workers.

So everyone gets legalization but only those who would be eligible through the current criteria for Green Cards would be put on that path to citizenship. See, it's not a "special path to citizenship", it's just letting law breakers who aren't eligible for any legalization right now to jump on the citizenship line and the rest just get legalized. See. nothing "special" about that.

The problem with this or any half measure is the GOP will raise anger on both sides. Amnesty folks will say it's not enough and pro-current law folks will say it's a sellout.

No one will be happy and everyone will be angrier with the GOP than they were before. Brilliant!

Of course, if it does pass, the amnesty people will turn their anger into pressure to get the rest of the loaf while the rest of us will be left playing defense and hoping the best cast is maybe 5-6 million illegals get a pass on breaking our laws.

Left! Ever to the left!

Speaking of anger...if you oppose amnesty, get ready to make yours heard.

Majority Leader Eric Cantor, Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy, Republican Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, and immigration-law expert Bob Goodlatte, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, are writing the principles with Boehner.

They intend to start vetting them with House Republicans, likely next week after GOP leaders hold a meeting to prep for their conference's Jan. 29 retreat. By the time the principles go public (or are leaked), leadership hopes to have more than half of the conference on board.

Then, according to aides, the plan is to gauge public reaction. If House members are deluged with nothing but hate mail from their districts, Republicans might decide to do nothing but emphasize border security, perhaps even voting on the border bill produced last year. That's at least until 2014 primary-election filings are over. (The biggest threat to Republicans on immigration is in the primaries anyway, strategists say. No one will lose in the general election because they are too soft on immigration.)

If public reaction is what will sway the GOP then that's what they'll have to get. Preferably in terms of donations to credible primary challengers. That's what will really scare them.

3. GOP Gets Their Moderate Dream Senate Candidate In Virginia.

It's going to be fun watching the Dems and the publishers of their daily newsletter, The Washington Post, turn Ed Gillespie, a moderate, pro-amnesty, party hack into a monster that's to the right of Ken Cuccinelli. Should be fun. I hope conservatives in Virginia give Gillespie all the support that moderates gave Cuccinelli last year.

19 The other part of the GOP Amnesty plan that is poison to the American Worker? They want to increase LEGAL immigration by 3X.. Right now we let 1 Million per year in legally.... they want that to increase to 3 Million.... or aprox. 1% of the American Population per year... Which means over a 25 year span, we would have about 20% of the American Citizens being foreign born... There is NO way to assimilate that many people.... American culture will be done.

49 I can't predict the future, but usually when the GOP caves, it's because they feel their position is politically unpopular.  If ObamaCare was a really popular law, they would probably cave.  But it's the single best issue they have to run against, so I don't see it.   The law simply doesn't work and even non-political people are genuinely pissed.

If the GOP goes down the amnesty road, they're going to get slaughtered in 2014.  I genuinely could see a 3rd Party rise up in response, which would mean Democrats would take back every branch of government and we'd be Venezuela in a few years.

I don't want to get comfortable and I want the heat to be put on, but I don't see an amnesty deal from the GOP house unless Boehner really is a Manchurian candidate that wants to throw Obama and Democrats a life preserver.

VA just elected Clinton's Bagman from Buffalo with no executive experience as governor. So why not Gillespie?

98 Kind of on topic - minor uproar in DC area, Larry O'Connor a Breitbartian (and a moron lurker at a minimum) does local radio talk, and had an interview with Rep Van Hollen from MD (D, because there isn't anything else in Maryland) about the "budget" that just passed, and asked who put the cuts to veteran's benefits in. Van Hollen blamed it on Republicans, and implied that the Dems had offered up some ag subsidies as cuts instead. OConnor is kind of freaking out about it. First, Van Hollen is a Dem - never ever accept what they say as truth. Perhaps I learned too much about parsing from the Clinton days, but I heard the interview, and OConnor asked a specific question and Van Hollen did not answer that question. OConnor asked who had put that provision in the bill, Van Hollen said that he didn't. So OConnor asked who did, name a name. Van Hollen answered that "my Republican colleagues.." pause which sounds like that is the answer to the question, but then he continues - "offered up all these severe cuts to Federal pensions, and we were willing to work with them on ag subsidies but they wanted no part of it, so we offered this alternative." (I have that in quotes but it is from memory) Parse that. He never explicitly said that Republicans did the cuts in veteran's benefits. But that is what OConnor is running with. Now, the GOP is the stupid party, so I wouldn't put it past them, but people on our side need to be skeptical of what the people on the other side say about our side - don't give them ammo.

108 It's what the US Chamber of Commerce wants, and a phalanx of big donors. You know, the people that write the checks that pay for the consultants that tell s the elected what to think and how to vote.

WHY? Posted by: Ribald Conservative riding Orca

How much does the Chamber of Commerce-types really donate?  Will it pay for a nasty primary, because that's what that $2,000 check is going to buy.

At the end of the day politicians need votes, not money.  Those 30 pieces of silver are going to end a Republicans career.  If Boehner really is the Manchurian candidate and he brings up something like the Senate bill, 90% plus of Republican House members will vote against it because they know they'll be a dead man walking in the next primary.  And Boehner will no longer be Speaker.

I actually think the Chamber crowd is being played by not slamming the door in their face, they're seeing how much money they can get before they say no, but we'll just have to see who's going to get screwed, them or us.  Even if a Republican politician had zero principles and was only looking out for themselves, the smart play would be "no" on ANY amnesty deal, even if it meant a little less money.

Significant wealthy people DO want Obamacare and DO want an increase in low wage "amnestied" workers from South of the Border. People DO want these things. Obamacare grants subsidies, at least through 2017, to the Health insurance companies (risk corridors) to guarantee them profitability. If the Republicans take that away, the Insurance companies just might collapse, and their big money would hate on the Republicans before and after. it's baked into the cake. Wealthy people want cheap immigrant labor, and really don't see how this will corrode our society and culture. They don't care, because they don't have to. It will affect them finally, but in the end, what difference does it make? WE THE PEOPLE just doesn't matter much anymore. Consent will be manufactured. Count on it.

Contrary to a deathbed conversion I had a playpen conversion essentially.

The GOP has willfully undermined his case and squandered its opportunity from 1994-2006 to undermine the structural integrity of the foundations of leviathan.

I did not leave the GOP(yet) but the GOP is leaving me.

The next time Paul Ryan says "elections have consequences" I am going to send 500 dollars to his district's Democrat Party because he SURE AS FUCK NEVER MADE THAT STICK WHEN BUSH WON and I am sick and fucking tired of his aiding the democrats in ATTACKING OUR FUCKING VETERANS AND MILITARY.

158 131.

Once you pass a law that basically forbids deportations, it's amnesty in my book.

What some conservatives are naive about is the whole "we won't kick you out, but you're not citizens yet, and you have this application process, yada yada.

At that point it's over, unless the GOP wants to then make the case that Hispanics should remain 2nd class citizens.  They'll be full blown citizens with an election cycle or two. Once you can't deport them for being here illegally, it's amnesty.

I don't have a problem per se with streamlining guest workers or making reforms to LEGAL immigration, but it's simply too dangerous to play with right now.  And with our economy in the shitter and our still current jobs crisis, why are we even having the conversation about importing labor from abroad?

This is a perfect populist moment for Republicans to give the middle finger to greedy CEOs that simply want to fire their current workers and pay 3rd world wages.

160 As a lefty peering into the conservative echo chamber, the blind confidence on the right that ACA would fail always seemed strange to me. Both Switzerland and the Netherlands have essentially been running ObamaCare for decades with no significant issues and certainly no political momentum to repeal it and replace with a US style "free market" clusterfuck.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switzerland_health_care) Now US insurance executives have high confidence that ACA will work out in actuarial terms (http://tinyurl.com/kjl2c4u) ( http://tinyurl.com/kqzh96c). With around 9 million people already covered by ACA (Medicaid plus private plus renewed policies meeting ACA regs) of course the GOP is giving up on repeal. Some Japanese fought on, isolated on islands, long after the Emperor surrendered, and you guys will keep arguing too. But you have lost the fight and eventually even the echo chamber admits reality.

161 There will be a reckoning Posted by: Nevergiveup My friend, there already was one. We lost. I am not an internet tough guy. I , like Sven and others, are tired of banging my head against the wall and thinking this will make a difference. WE THE PEOPLE, not just "conservatives" have been betrayed by "both sides", which is a fiction. There is only one ruling party in DC now. WE THE PEOPLE just doesn't mean shit. I wish it did. I wish on the lives of my kids it did. I wish I could give them our Republic back. It's and empty wish, because it can't come true just by thinking it will be so, or by voting. Anymore, voting is just a rubberstamp to give the One Party the consent of "We the People" and then they go off and do whatever they want. One judge trumps the will of 75% of the voters of Oklahoma. Prosecutorial discrection lets off huge numbers of illegals. What law? What consent? What do we do? And Michelle Obama is worried because her husband has to ride around in a 32 year old plane. Posted by: Tattoo De Plane at January 16, 2014 11:35 AM (Y92Nd) A fucking men. Even if we don't get Warner's scalp, going after it this year may make the Dems have to play defense with this seat. For those of you not schooled in Virginia politics, of the two US Senate seats, one of the seats seems to be the "stable" seat. It does not change, regardless of who is in the seat. The Byrds held the seat forever, then John Warner for about 30 years, and now Mark Warner. The other seat that Kaine holds is a different story. In the last 50 years, only Chuck Robb was re-elected to the seat, and that was because there was a 4 way battle for the seat. If Marshall Coleman hadn't run as an independent in 94, Oliver North may have won the seat. So, if Gillespie can make the Dems work to hold this seat, then other seats that may not be as "safe" as this one may start opening up. Which means this is up to the GOP to get winning candidates, and not fuck this up, again.

I'm seriously thinking of voting Democrat for the first time in 42 years because, hey at least the Democrats are honest about what they're going to do (more or less. They still lie but you KNOW what they're going to do). I'm tired of hoping and hoping and then having my hopes dashed like, like, well like a Cubs Fan.

I might as well vote my own self interest (it'll only be temporary till the economy implodes) since the GOP is going to screw me while telling me that's not dick I feel in my ass but a mild discomfort and wait until we have a majority and THEN we'll fix EVERYTHING.

Nothing I'd like better than to see their shocked orange skin, white hair framed faces when they lose the House and sink into obscurity.

It's like in Wheel Of Time. Rand had to clear out the old seals and other detritus so that he could install a new and better one to keep the Dark One (Socialists/Progressives) imprisoned again.

Time to clear out the dead wood and since it's hard to tell who's who, then clear them all out. I don't have a decent Senator to vote for my Representative is a Democrat in disguise visited on me by the loss of a seat so this guy doesn't represent me, so screw 'em.

I apologize in advance to any of you all who are hurt or think you're hurt by my actions but I've just had enough. I want to hurt the GOP back for all the years it's screwed me.

The legal immigration process is a huge mess, and yet some people still attempt to enter the US legally. That is where reform should be focused. IÂ’ll bet there are thousands of heartbreaking stories Republicans could use to come out on top of immigration reform without rewarding people who break the law over people who follow it.

Posted by: chiefjaybob at January 16, 2014 12:06 PM

And there you have it, though I no longer believe the Party Not in Power even exists. The lords in D.C. are looking out for themselves, big donors and their tight pals, in that order. The rest of us? Fuggedaboutit.

Scratch any member of Congress and you'll find a greedy, amoral thug. They are nearly identical in their beliefs; some play the part of "opponents" from time to time, but are reading from a well-worn script full of cliches, excuses and weasel words.

And they are able to act this way with impunity. There are no consequences for immoral or illegal behavior; the worst they can expect for malfeasance is a gentle rebuke from the Poppin' Fresh crowd in the media, or, in extreme case, a mild rebuke from Teh Conservative Press.

I have no faith that the situation will improve in our lifetimes. No one will stand up against the lords in D.C., not courts, law-enforcement personnel at any level, not patriotic citizens. The deck is stacked, so completely that it would require some very unpleasant actions -- of a sort for which no one has the nerve -- to unseat the ruling class.

In short, it WILL "burn," but the satisfaction our Komputer Kommandoes expect to feel when the system collapses around the greedheads currently in power will be replaced by pain and fear when they realize the fire will engulf them as well.

At 5%, we're talking the entire tax take of the country just to service the debt once it rolls over. So what happens to the states? The country can just print more money (hello Wiemar), but the States can't. How quickly (reasonably) would CA, IL, or MI see their pension payments and other debt obligations rise to the point they simply couldn't make them?

233 What I don't get is there's all of this rage about something the GOP hasn't done.  People are talking like the GOP just endorsed ObamaCare and passed a blanket amnesty.  Clowns like Erickson just have this idea that there needs to be a constant level of hate for the Party by whipping up all sorts of "what ifs".

It's a little like talking about what you're going to do when you find out your wife has been sleeping with your best friend, even though it hasn't happened.
People are talking about sitting out elections, starting a 3rd party, or actually voting Democrat like it's a done deal.

I'm all for keeping up positive pressure to do the right thing, but if the GOP gets the idea that conservatives want nothing to do with them, I don't see them moving to the right, I see them going to the left and pursue a different coalition.

241 As I've said in the past, voting for the GOP will not solve anything.

The only way to attempt to achieve conservative goals (in the near term) is to move the GOP to the right.  The only way to move the GOP to the right is to prove to the GOP that it will lose elections if it betrays conservatives.  The only way to prove that point is for conservatives to go on a general strike and sit out the 2014 mid-terms and allow a lot of GOP candidates to lose.

Otherwise, you are just deluding yourself in thinking that any of the following will ever happen in our lifetimes:

1.  Repeal of Obamacare;
2.  Lowering spending;
3.  Entitlement reform; or
4.  Preventing amnesty

All 4 of the above are things the GOP absolutely does not want to do.  And, if we reward the GOP with our efforts, money and/or votes, they will believe they can get away with doing the opposite of these 4 things.

History shows us that the GOP will never do 2 or 3 unless we put the fear of God into them.  And bitching and moaning on blogs does not do that.  Calling their offices does not do that.  The only thing that will change GOP behavior is a lesson that conservatives aren't playing their game anymore.

Number 4 above is a given that GOP wants to do the opposite.  How do we know this? Because, despite promises in almost EVERY SINGLE GOP incumbents' last few campaigns, the GOP leadership and GOP caucus desperately wants to pass an amnesty.  They have made that crystal clear.  We have had outrage, millions of phone calls, and mass protests against this every time they tried to do it - yet they still are attempting to do it.  Why?  because they do not believe it will cost them any conservative votes at election.  Prove them wrong.

Number 1 is also pretty much a given that the GOP will not repeal Obamacare.  Both Boehner and McConell have made statements making it pretty clear that they do not intend to repeal Obamacare, just fix it.  As they are the GOP leaders in congress, that means that is the GOP's actual position - regardless of what any single candidate claims or any fund-raising letter claims.  And, they are going to do this because again, they don't believe it will cost them any conservative votes to NOT repeal Obamacare.  Again, we must prove them wrong.

If we simply help more republicans get elected and help inumbents get re-eleccted, no matter what you argue, you are sending the message to the GOP that they can do what they are telling us and showing us they are going to do, which is:

1.  NOT repeal Obamacare;
2.  NOT lower spending;
3.  Not reform entitlements;
4.  Pass amnesty.

The GOP could not make its position on these things more clear if they held you down and spit in your face.  Yet you - conservatives - continue to support the GOP and vote for it, claiming that "at least they are not as bad as democrats".

But you are wrong.  The GOP is worse because it gives a "conservative" imprint on the liberal messes, making it that much harder to convince low information voters that conservatism makes sense.  Without republican involvement, we could at least lay the various messes at the feet of liberalism.  But the Republicans make that difficult because they give so much cover to liberal idiocy.

I know the regulars will come on and tell me how stupid I am and how treasonous and that the best way to make progress is to keep doing what we've always done, because this time it will be different and the republicans will do something worthwhile if we just have faith.  that is a really, really dumb argument that is not based on any facts.  Indeed, all facts actually support my argument.  There is no factual evidence that the GOP has any intention of ever pursuing any conservative agenda.  All evidence points in exactly the opposite direction.  Yet the same people will ridicule me and tell you that supporting the GOP is our only option.  Does that really make sense to those of you who can think?

As opposed to what?  What they are doing now?  You seem to believe the GOP is currently pursuing any conservative agenda.  That is wrong.  Show me the conservative agenda being currently pursued by actions - not words - by the GOP.

Where have they cut spending?  (I Know - they don't control everything so that means they HAVE to vote to increase spending.  Also, from 2000 - 2006 they controlled everything and they increased spending.  So, when they don't control everything, they increase spending and when they do control everything they increase spending.  But somehow, they are conservative?)

It is pretty clear they are going to ram amnesty through.  So there is that.

This idea that if we just have faith and support the GOP no matter what is delusional.

And, if they "move left to form a different coalition" doesn't that just prove that none of these people are remotely conservative in the first place?  Which, ultimately, proves the point.  If their default to conservative anger at them betraying conservatives is to move left - then isn't that telling us something?

On reflection, the 47% comment was very offensive in that it exposed how fucked up the establishment GOP's thinking is.

The concept of low taxes and balanced budgets appeals to people who right now don't make enough to pay taxes.  I mean, don't they dream of making enough money to pay taxes??

Conservative principles are true and correct because they are INHERENTLY true and correct.

By pitching a low tax and balanced budget philosophy, or apparently pitching it to those people, to only the people that actually pay taxes, we are cheapening our message and makes the whole thing sound self interested.

No wonder we lost in 2012.  Where was our dream?  Where was our hope?  Where was our principle?  Let's hope that is rekindled and actually represented this time around.

You dont beat them by running away from the party. On the Republican side that does NOT mean leaving the party! It means throwing out the bastages in primaries and throwing tantrums that get the RINOs careers ended.

Effectively the counterculture leftist agenda has become the establishment status quo and if you want to defeat it you have to throw a spanner in the machine. The leftists own the Democrats and have been wheedling to neuter the the GOP. Thanks to RINOs like McCain, they have made inroads.

It's why the left hates the Tea Party. They dont mind a pet poodle other party, but they hate ideological competition because, lets face it, leftism is stupidity on meth with a bad hair day.

ObamaCare is not going to be repealed as long as Obama is President.  Unless you expect a coup, that's the way our government was set up.  If you want things to change, you win elections.

If you want to start a new party, just go ahead and move forward with that.  Quit bitching and start it.   I think many conservatives just want some sort of pity party or groveling more than they actually want to change things.  Start voting for some ridiculous 3rd party dingbats that want to run Christine O'Donnell type campaigns that way you'll never be disappointed.

I happen to think our problem is Democrats in power that passed ObamaCare.  Conservative blowhard opinion makers however want to blame ObamaCare on stuff they imagine Republicans might do.  Oh, and make sure you buy my newsletter and buy a ticket to my event where we can discuss how much we hate Republicans.

331 "160 Blow it out your ass. We are not Switzerland or the Netherlands. A single-payer U.S. system would be bigger than Britain's NHS, India's railways, and China's army combined, at least in its bureaucracy." The whole point is that Switzerland and the Netherlands do not have single-payer, they have insurance exchanges where everybody purchases private insurance from corporations (and non-profits), just like ACA. Of course there are many differences between those countries and the US, but they provide an existence proof that universal coverage via private insurance purchased on an exchange can work. Certainly the US could still manage to fail to implement ACA successfully, but my point is that blind confidence in ACA failure is misplaced, especially given all the US insurance executives I linked to who express confidence the bugs will get worked out (note that nobody commented on insurance execs saying that ACA looks OK, and of course Ace never links to that information either). Of course the left has echo chambers, only a fool would think otherwise (DailyKos, etc.)

What about the government shutdown that absolutely destroyed themselves in the polls and actually made ObamaCare more popular? That's not enough? Ah, yes, let's address these as we go, shall we? Every elected Republican voted against it- when it was too late. How many chances did they have to kill it in its infancy? I remember at least one amendment that was withdrawn rather than let it be read. All the Republicans had to do to kill OCare in its cradle was to withhold Unanimous Consent and force it to be read out loud. But that would have taken guts, and involved self-sacrificial commitment. No, much easier to cast a superfluous "no" vote than actually oppose the law in the first place. All those "repeal" bills? Again, easy votes that cost them nothing. Any time they had a chance to fight for defunding, they bailed. The shut-down? They didn't cause the shutdown- they had pre-caved on ObamaCare funding. Obama shut the government down and blamed Republicans. So, no, I don't think they've done anything to win my confidence on ObamaCare. How about Amnesty? Anything they've "done" there? Fast & Furious? How's that "investigation" coming along? Benghazi? IRS? NSA? Tell me how Republicans are representing my interests.

356 A leftie reports ...

"As a lefty peering into the conservative echo chamber, the blind confidence on the right that ACA would fail always seemed strange to me."

You need to learn something. Like how evil, backward, stupid and wrong leftism is. And the fact that is NOT what conservatives were saying.  It's never been considered a slam-dunk that the bill would repeal itself. On the contrary, it's been understood that this ACA would be like a case of Herpes. A dreadful experience that we cant get rid of. Hence Ted Cruz. Hence the urgency to have a Republican leadership that WILL repeal for real as soon as possible. 2015 is a possibility if we had a leadership with the Cohones to put it on Obama's desk and make it the price of continued cooperation on ANYTHING ELSE.

"Now US insurance executives have high confidence that ACA will work out in actuarial terms"

Never did and never will in reality - it will cost $2 trillion over ten years. Killing jobs and ripping off millions plus throwing hundreds of billions in taxes... AND ripping off the young and healthy. all to keep the spinning top working. It's as stable  as a

"With around 9 million people already covered by ACA (Medicaid plus private plus renewed policies meeting ACA regs) "
of course the dependency crowd have constructed their captive audience, enslaved enough to the chains of dependency to avoid actually FIXING things to be better for all. Meanwhile, 100 million losing what they had. Covered by a bad system that costs too much, and ruins the freedom, choice, innovation and cost-effectiveness we deserve.

We can do WAY better. leftists lack imagination in their dislike of freedom.

It's that Boehner, Cornyn, et al, never, and I mean never bring out charts, graphs, studies, which show a definite net gain for the United States by adopting Amnesty for lawbreakers. There is nothing to show how this will either help the American Taxpayer or Americans without jobs. There is no attempt to try to address why this letting of millions of welfare leeches will some how benefit the U.S. There is no attempt to prove why it's a great idea to increase the amount of competition for good jobs during a severe recession. There is no attempt to explain why it's a great idea to flood the market with professionals (engineers, MBAs, doctors, programmers, etc) from foreign countries to drive down the wages of American professionals during a time of increased inflation. Honestly, fuck these appeals to emotions or "fairness" explain why in concrete terms where and why there's any need or benefit to America by rewarding lawbreakers who are bound to make our lives considerably worse.

385 "Gee, and people wonder why I won't vote Republican in 2014."

I wonder. That algorithm (stay home) dont work. You get more Dems, and the losing GOPers decide to move ... LEFT.

Better solution:
1.  Kick every RINO you can out of office in the primaries.
2. Vote Republican in the fall AND
3. MOST IMPORTANT - harrass them mercilessly to do what YOU want them to do.

We all know that Democrats wake up everyday and ask themselves:
"What can we do to make life worse for American taxpayers, working family folks, rich people and conservatives?" and they go do that.

If the answer is letting more Democrats win office, its a stupid question.

That's exactly what everybody says.  But the game is rigged and it isn't just individuals in the parties who have done the rigging.  The entire game is rigged in favor of incumbents and for those who go along and do what they are told by the incumbent old timers.  The parties both operate the same way and they scratch each others back.  Trying to work within the established parties is a pipe dream, imo.  There's nothing sacred about the Republican party and there shouldn't be.  If party loyalty were so necessary, Lincoln would have never been elected.

396 Every elected Republican voted against it- when it was too late. How many chances did they have to kill it in its infancy? I remember at least one amendment that was withdrawn rather than let it be read. All the Republicans had to do to kill OCare in its cradle was to withhold Unanimous Consent and force it to be read out loud.

Tell me how Republicans are representing my interests. Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) Ah, F It.

This is just such a stupid form of reasoning.  I guess a GOP Congressman also could have brought a gun to the floor and started shooting people.  They're practically traitors for not doing it.

The Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate with 60 votes.  And the White House.  ObamaCare passed comfortably in both chambers and the President signed it.  Every Republican voted against it.  That's the process in the our Constitution.

I remember a VERY vigorous opposition by the GOP, one that led to the Republicans taking back the House in 2010 and Ted Kennedy's seat going to a Republican.

Again, if you want to believe that Republicans secretly want socialized medicine, just start voting for the "Constitution Party" or write in random names when you go in the voting booth.

I know that our best shot to get rid of ObamaCare is throwing Democrats out of office.  I will believe that until I see otherwise.  If I saw a substantial amount of Republicans voting against repeal or voted FOR ObamaCare when it came up, I could see the point, but that's simply not the case.

Why do you vote Republican if you actually believe they are just lying to you?

The principle, however, that people who don't pay taxes won't care about conservative messaging, is as far off as I can imagine.

A shit ton of those people who don't make enough to pay taxes are our fucking people, our voters.  That was my big problem with Romney's statement and this kind of thinking.

It's as if we don't even know who our own voters are.  Reagan knew and knew what principles he believed in.  GWB lost the popular vote to fucking Al Gore.

431 This is just such a stupid form of reasoning. I guess a GOP Congressman also could have brought a gun to the floor and started shooting people. They're practically traitors for not doing it. Yes, because withholding unanimous consent is *exactly like* taking a gun to the Senate or House floor and shooting up random people. Are you *trying* to sound fucking stupid? 'Cause it's working. Even before it was passed (and then expanded), ObamaCare clocked in at ~1500 pages (IIRC). The Democrats wouldn't sit still to have 500 pages (on of the propose amendments) read. You think they would have waited for the whole thing? In both houses? I call bullshit. They very specifically *didn't* want it read. They wanted it to be passed without giving anyone a chance to read it. So, yes, one Senator standing up when Harry Reid asked for unanimous consent and yelling "No" would have stopped ObamaCare cold. Oh, and let's not forget the 11th hour Compromise by Bitch McConnell that allowed the vote prior to the Christmas Recess- because heaven forbid Congressmen have to work over the holidays. That, too, could have killed ObamaCare- again, simply by giving people time to read it. And I see you still haven't addressed Amnesty, F&F, the IRS, or the NSA scandals. How convenient for you. As for who I vote for- I don't vote "Republican" I vote for Republicans who have earned my vote. That includes Ted Cruz (now- would it surprise you to find out it didn't in 2012? Because I had lots of concerns about him being a politically well-connected lawyer, those concerns have proven baseless). That does not include John Cornyn. It is quickly failing to include Joe Barton. Because I don't owe anyone my vote- they must earn it, and they can't do that simply by putting a fucking letter at the end of their names.

432 If she was such a fighter how come she did not fight for her job as Governor and why did she not run in 2016? She didnÂ’t fight for her job as governor because she believed there were reforms that Alaska needed that were being blocked because she was the governor. She put her state above herself. And I strongly believe that she didnÂ’t run in 2016 because she got fooled by Rick Perry right along with the rest of us. If Rick Perry hadnÂ’t screwed up his own candidacy, a Palin run would have destroyed his chances.

434 Here's what's planned folks.

Import a bunch of semi literate foreigners who will be so grateful to have gotten out of the disease infested shit hole they were born in.

Put them to work instead of American born unemployed but who desire a wage that pays their bills and who won't put up with lousy working conditions and who can't be threatened with deportation.

Let them vote for whoever because the Chamber of Commerce doesn't give a shit and they'll still fund our reelection to be the 2nd place party.

Eventually all those whiny patriots will die out or will do something we can arrest them for (and we're working on redefining some crimes to facilitate that) and ship them of to prison where they can labor for even less money and less benefits.

Meanwhile as we wait for the World Financial Implosion that will cause realignments all over the world and Democracies and True Republics become endangered species, we can enjoy ourselves at the latest State Department soiree.

And all you TEA Party types can suck our ball juice.

Posted by: prescient11 at January 16, 2014 12:22 PM (tVTLU) Umm, no. Cuccinelli was not that good of a campaigner or candidate. If he had generated the amount of support that McDonnell received in 09, he would have squeaked into office and that would have elected Obenshain as AG too. E. W. Jackson was a disaster from day one. Cuccinelli's problem was that he didn't push the fiscal conservatism aspect until the last week of the campaign, and did that very weakly. If you live in NoVA, I bet you were bombarded by Cuccinelli ads as he tried to get out the "vote rich" DC suburbs. If you live in the GOP strongholds, you saw little in the way of ads for Cuccinelli. So instead of getting the base out, he decided on going after the Democrat leaning areas.

437 The NHS is the largest employer in the UK. At the beginning of the 20th century the US Federal government comprised ~20% of the economy. It has been growing continuously to the ~50% it is now. Imagine how many new Federal employees the 'private market' ACA requires. Imagine how many if all healthcare workers are forceed to become federal employees. When the Federal government grows to over 50% of the economy there is no real producing economy, only paper passed around and electrons shuffled as all industry works defacto for the government. True unemployment is over 11% now. There are 20-30 Million illegals living in the USA. About 10-15% of Mexico's economy is money sent 'home' from the USA. The EU is in recession and failing. The GOP wants to move Left because 'tactics'.

The problem is, the reality is much different.  If your wife screams at you and throws dishes every time she IMAGINES you may want to cheat on her it doesn't mean you're going to be faithful.  It means you're going to be out the door looking for another woman.

Again, if you really believe what you're saying, why are you even debating it?  Leave.  If I truly believed most Republicans secretly wanted ObamaCare, I would be out the door without hesitation.

456 Look RINOs, we've gone your way since '88. Time to give the reins back to the conservatives again and we can win some elections. I'm so sick and tired of the "RINO" term. It's been used for everything from "not Conservative" to "doesn't support my one issue" to "actually actively stabs Republicans in the back when they want". That last one's for John McCain. Here's a handy system for determining if someone is a RINO. Look at the GOP platform. Do they actively voice and act in support of those items? If no for most of them THEN they're a RINO. If they're off by a couple, NOT RINO. They're something else, like squish, or useless stumblebum.

Speaking of that, I'm reminded of a video I saw where Chris "I squat to pee" Matthews had a microphone and was giving a live audience a chance to say a sentence live. One person said something about Benghazi not being about a video, and Christopher said, "Yes, it was, read a newspaper". Anyone feel like throwing that one back in the Potato Head's face?

and John fucking McCain is always the GOP's six o'clock tailgunner when the Democrats are strafing us?

The only Republican who adhered to the written platform the last 20 years was George W Bush and he won.

Bob Dole was too old and unable to run hard at Clinton...pity he hadn't found Viagra yet.

I agree on RINO the proper term is "Republican" of which I am pondering not being one.

It is Gabe's party not mine...

501 The Patriots win the Superbowl.  Posted by: Sphynx at January 16, 2014 01:21 PM (OZmbA)

I am a DIE HARD Patriots fan.  My first game was watching Jim Plunkett's rookie debut for the Boston Patriots in Harvard Stadium on Soldier's Field Road.  I endured the hell of the Rod Rust years. I watched them get smashed on Janaury 25, 1986 in the Super Bowl after an 18 hour cross country drive from Ft. Benning to Ft. Riley, KS timed JUST so I could get to see the game.

I've been there through good and bad and I take a backseat to no one in my loyalty to the team, I am the COMPLETE Patriots homer and I say this...

I don't see us making it out of Denver.

Bellichick has done an awesome job when you consider he's got about $27M worth of top-tier talent on IR right now.  It's been a hell of a ride.  But I just don't see it happening.

503 If the GOP votes en masse against a repeal of ObamaCare, you can then say I told you so, but I wouldn't hold my breath. "en masse?" You don't get it, do you? They don't have to vote "en masse" against it. They just have to let (and, yes, that's the operative term- I'll spell that out for you in just a minute) the usual suspects vote against it. Then, McConnell and Boehner can say, "Well, we tried. Sorry. Now give us more money." Now, to that "let" portion. You see, the RNC, the SRC, and NRCC could tell people- "You don't vote for repeal of ObamaCare- and forget this 'replace' business, and you don't get money." Reeeeeal quick, McCain, and Graham, and the others would fall in line. Without that money, they don't get elected. Without getting elected, the gravy-train stops. But, for some reason, the Republican Establishment never sees fit to threaten such people. No, it saves *that* for people who are too loud about killing ObamaCare, or Amnesty, or who think that Social Issues might be kind of important. They throw in with Coke Bear when she loses her primary. They fail to support the VA Gubernatorial candidate- possible (albeit not certainly) costing him the race. There have even been rumors (admittedly only that) that they've threatened Ted Cruz with similar (not that it would matter in TX, but still). If the Republican Party wants to convince me that they are not at least okay with ObamaCare ("but we'll do it right!!!") and Amnesty, then they need to start exercising what control they have over their members.

By pitching a low tax and balanced budget philosophy, or apparently pitching it to those people, to only the people that actually pay taxes, we are cheapening our message and makes the whole thing sound self interested."

Yes, and that's why candidates with conservative principles ARE MORE ELECTABLE because they have more going for them than "Hey, I am a rich guy and know how to get other rich guys to do well."

The 47% comment was clueless because it showed that Romney lacks the core conviction that conservative principles are good for ALL Americans, and lacked the confidence to sell those principles.
From a campaign strategist POV, yeah, some voters just wont vote for you, but that's not how a candidate should think or express himself - leave no voter behind.

508 From Tim Carney's linked piece. "The Establishment no longer has the power it once had to demand obedience. How did the party leadership maintain such power in the past? Basically with money. Party leaders had a near monopoly on access to money, both in terms of raising funds for candidates and landing jobs for individuals. Floor leaders and committee chairmen have always been the GOP’s main contact point with corporations’ political action committees and lobbyists. If a member stays on the good side of party leaders, the leaders make a phone call to a lobbyist who throws the member a fundraiser. Similarly, if a staffer always played nice with the Establishment, that brought with it job security: Even if your boss retired, you could land on your feet, as the leadership would recommend you for a job in another office, or K Street would hire you. You can see how this would make dissenting staffers and members watch their words and actions. Sure, members were allowed to vote against the leadership – as long as the leadership didn’t need your vote. But at the end of the day, you had to play ball, otherwise you got no money for re-election, and no jobs for you or your staff. But Teller landed on his feet — and today any conservative staffer disposed to fight the party leadership can hold out the same hope. The GOP Establishment has lost its monopoly, and the insurgents now have many bases of power – and thus many sources of money. Conservative activist groups have always existed inside the GOP, but because they couldn’t raise and distribute large amounts of money, they functioned mostly through moral suasion – which means they were largely powerless. EVENTUALLY THESE BELTWAY CONSERVATIVE GROUPS GREW DEPENDENT ON THE GOP, and instead of holding the party accountable, they often ended up being the establishment’s liaison to the conservative base. (*You would be surprised who these people are. They're often your "friends" like the bad crowd that welcomes you when you transfer to a new school after your parents divorce.) Today’s conservative groups are fully armed, though. Thanks to advances in Internet fundraising and changes in campaign finance laws, the Senate Conservatives Fund, FreedomWorks, and the Club for Growth can raise and spend enough money to compete in GOP primaries with the Chamber of Commerce and lobbying firms. (*That's all nice, but when are they going to nominate candidates that aren't insane? The Buckley rule is nominate a conservative who can win. There are no other candidates is VA.)

They've been addled and ruined by leftist indoctrination along the way, like at J-school, where they think its their JOB to advocate for a position.
I was tipped off to this back in the 1980s when some TIME mag editorette admitted that her real goal was environmental advocacy. Journalism, ie inserting the favored POV in TIME articles, was just the METHOD to get it done.

Leftists ruin culture by politicizing everything in our culture. Politics, ie, the power relationships around reality, is everything to them. Journalism is never unbiased and those who claim to not be biased are just - lying or clueless.
We need to educate people to modern conservative thinking or its an uphill battle.

John McCain was once the exception to the voice of the GOP, he has essentially managed to hijack the party and spread his horsefuckery into a group of acolytes.  Rubio, Graham, the Maine Twins of yore...

You'd like to pretend that McCain is the anomaly, I understand but he was almost the candidate in 96 and 00 and made noise about switching parties in 04 and STILL got the nomination.

No it is okay, I understand trust me.

Mitt Romney was a good and decent man, and I would shout that from the roof of the ESB or a radio tower until my voice gave out...

he's also an uber moderate who attacked his primary opponents with 6 times the ferocity he could be bothered to lob left.

I am under no illusions the GOP gives a fuck about me, I assure you.  Yet I can't help but wonder after having been or nearly been a max donor to the Presidential races in 04, 08, and 12 if they don't at least a little bit miss my blindly sending them money?  They keep asking ME for thousands at a time you see, I very seldom bother calling them.

When it was being debated, and about to be allowed on the floor, it required a vote to get it out of committee and onto the floor. Republicans had to use every means at their disposal, and they did not on the biggest vote of the century.

Again, please tell me how voting more GOP helps. Wow, they can "fix" the ACA now if they get numbers? Try again...
