Japan's Bunny Cafés!!!
(Oh, and By the Way, A Woman Died In Ambulance Transit In One of the GWB Traffic Snarls)

— Ace

The Japanese love the cute and weird.

What's cuter than a bunny?

What's weirder than eating in a café peppered by rabbit turds?

bunnyturds.jpg

In Japan you have to pay extra for the privilege of dining amongst rodent feces.

No but seriously I'd love to go drink tea and pet rabbits. Why not?

So now that that that's out of the way... Yeah, this Christie thing is going to get worse before it gets better. (Or, for some of you anti-Christie folks: It's going to get better before it gets even better still.)

Emergency responders were delayed in attending to four medical situations – including one in which a 91-year-old woman lay unconscious – due to traffic gridlock caused by unannounced closures of access lanes to the George Washington Bridge, according to the head of the borough’s EMS department.

The woman later died, borough records show.

In at least two of those instances, response time doubled, noted EMS coordinator Paul Favia, who documented those cases in a Sept. 10 letter to Mayor Mark Sokolich, which The Record obtained.

...

It also took EMS seven minutes to reach an unconscious 91-year-old woman who later died of cardiac arrest at a hospital. Although he did not say her death was directly caused by the delays, Favia noted that “paramedics were delayed due to heavy traffic on Fort Lee Road and had to meet the ambulance en-route to the hospital instead of on the scene.”

I imagine these EMS workers are government union workers: So expect lots of details and interviews.

Corrected: I wrote that the woman died in the traffic snarl. That's just not true. She died at the hospital. It is suggested that the delay in traffic contributed to this.

Though I doubt it did.

But that's not a headline you want to see.

Thanks to @comradearthur for bunnies, @drewmtips for Republican Doom tips (of course), and BCochran for the correction.

Haven't done the drive in a few years, but it used to be that driving the last 1/4 mile approaching the bridge to the tollbooths (have to pay to LEAVE NJ, as the joke always goes) took as long to drive as the 15 previous miles to get to the bridge.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at January 08, 2014 06:45 PM (DmNpO) I think this is a Nixon thing. This is so stupid and petty that even Christie wouldn't order it. It's something that some high ranking official did to screw with a political enemy. Inspired, no doubt, by Obama's actions in the shutdown. It's easy, though, to see how this is just a subordinate flexing her muscles. You've gotta wonder, though, don't these people realize they are Republicans and the media will not cover for them? I do wonder if they can establish a quid pro quo on this. The first attempted defense should be to see if the repairs started happening before the emails (and before the Fort Lee mayor's announcement). That may not be true.

I think it still remains to be seen what Christie knew, and when he knew it (so to speak), but this doesn't look good, obviously.

On delays, the above complaint with the 91 year old woman alleges that an ambulance trip that "usually" took 4 minutes, took 7 minutes.

Yeah. . .that's a "major" traffic jam. . .an increase of three minutes to get onto the GWB.  (FWIW, when I used to do it, typical rush-hour wait to get onto the bridge was never LESS than 15 or 20 minutes).

Obviously, every second counts, but we're talking at most a 3 minute delay here, and I suspect its probably still within the level of "normal" traffic for that bridge entrance.

That's it.  The optics here are terrible.

Again, even if you take this "complaint" at face value, the ambulance in question took 7 minutes to cross the bridge vs the "usual" time of 4 minutes.

Still, assuming there is no direct connection to him, if Christie denies all knowledge of this, and summarily fires everyone involved, he could potentially wiggle loose.

159 Ace, many people living in big cities in Japan (such as Tokyo) cannot have pets in their homes. These "cafes" are an interesting service. My wife and I visited a "cat cafe" in Tokyo last time we were there. We enjoyed the visit. For about $10 each we spent an hour with about a dozen cats (not all of whom were awake). I suspect the "cafe" part is not the main attraction at most of these places. The one we visited just had some cookies, and a drinks machine set to dispense drinks for free (after you paid to get in of course). I wonder if these are all "cafes" for tax or other business reasons.

But when it comes to women assessing other women, y'all have the whole crabs in a bucket mentality down pat.

195 I don't give a damn about the fat porkloving fuck and anything to hinder or sink his presidential ambitions the better.  But it seems pretty obvious why this is getting traction now.  Its a political story that the msm can talk about that doesn't include Obama and so they don't have to speak negatively about him or make wild ridiculous excuses that no one is buying anymore.

198 you know who i don't care for? elizabeth hasselbeck...it's like she is trying too hard.... *** I like her but I think she doesn't really work well for her new gig. On The View they conducted protracted discussions about various topics. On morning tv they have to get in and get out, doing multiple segments between commercial breaks. She's not comfortable with that. And, that's not a bad thing. I often think their attempts to tackle complex subjects in 30-60 second soundbites is absurd.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at January 08, 2014 03:09 PM (DmNpO)

199 I must say, this is a really stupid "scandal".

the phrase "Time for traffic problems in Fort Lee" could mean:

Time to *create* traffic problems in Fort Lee, or:

Time for the *previously scheduled* traffic problems in Fort Lee to appear.

we don't really know which one it is.

as usual the Donks are trying to turn this bridge thing into a mega-scandal by inventing a corrupt narrative to go with it, just like what they did with the whole Valerie Plame thing - they totally invented the story that Cheney/Rove deliberately outed her for revenge.  they are attempting to do something similar here.

That sidebar Ailes interview is fascinating. "CNN has stopped doing news." But what CNN doesn't realize is that the feeding frenzy helps Christie if he's smart. Take every allegation seriously, fire who need to be fired, launch investigations and wait for news cycle to burn out. Now, that means his 2016 hopes are seriously damaged, but I think he needs to focus on staying in office.

This is why I think they'll be looking to see if there was a quid pro quo or if the repairs at the bridge (and God knows there are always traffic delays there and construction all over the place) were already scheduled. I think it's unlikely that what you posit is true, chemjeff, but it's possible. I find it amazing that NJ has enough Republicans throughout the bureaucracy that they could actually make this happen.

How he can claim that he's just hearing about this today is a mystery: it was discussed in Halperin's book about the 2012 campaign wasn't it? Remember all the anti-Christie stuff that book had? Halperin said most/all of it came from Mitt's people, teehee.

228 This is worse than not getting an emergency response to our consulate in Benghazi...how? I put the body count at 4 on that one. The only difference is that Christie is a Republican and we actually care about this stuff, while Obama has been shocked, shocked to find out what his aides have been up to in Fast & Furious, the IRS affair, tapping journalists phones, everything the NSA is doing, Benghazi, Obamacare and a host of more minor bureaucratic impairments of Americans -- and the media Does Not Care. Republicans abusing power is part of The Narrative, but Democrats make nothing but Honest Mistakes. I enjoy the defenestrations Chrisite performs on talking point wielding people in public question situations, but I think he'd be a lousy President. If the media pillories him and gives Hillary a pass on Benghazi it might make me vote for the guy out of spite.

Posted by: Darren at January 08, 2014 03:38 PM (cKoDv)

229 Not talking about Christie specifically, but the establishment pick will usually win if the further right candidates keep splitting the vote. So there'll probably be a "Republicans would've won if they hadn't SOLD OUT" narrative forever.

Posted by: JL at January 08, 2014 03:45 PM (KKla3)

230 24 Christie was the Huntsman-wing candidate. Now they'll have to go with Peter King. Bushies are still in for Rubio unless JEB wants a run at it. If JEB is in the MSM might put aside their Bush-hatred and grab on to him. Posted by: BSR (aka Rifle) at January 08, 2014 06:39 PM (3wrJ+)

234 Bunnies > cats

Less food pickiness, less attitude, quiet, more limited jumping/climbing ability, just as playful, just as fluffy, messes are far less smelly.

In reality, there's little that recommends a cat over a bunny unless you're looking specifically for a 4-legged mouse/rat trap.

Posted by: The Political Hat at January 08, 2014 04:07 PM (XvHmy)

236 The traffic thing probably isn't enough to force resignation, but it is enough to end his further aspirations, and neuter his remaining effectiveness as a gov.

You have to question his judgment if he hires idiots who would play games like this.

Posted by: Purp[/i][/b][/s] at January 08, 2014 04:21 PM (guzmA)

237 Not a Christie fan, but I don't think this is going to end his Presidential ambitions.

Still, if Christie can't make a case that he can carry his home state, he really has nothing to point to for why conservatives should nominate him if electability goes out the window.

I have zero doubt though, the Clintons are most afraid of Christie to go up against, so I'm sure this has their fingerprints on it.  A Democrat can't win the White House without New Jersey.
