Jimmy Kimmel Rips Obamacare and Young Voters
— Ace

From @rdbrewer4 in the sidebar, and recommended as a main post by @comradearthur.

I like everything about this except the part where he encourages young people to vote.

Then he suggests they pick up a newspaper once in a while.

I'd reverse that sequence. Pick up a newspaper, and then, after reading it for a year or two, then start voting.

I'm not sure if anyone besides the gasbags of the Sunday show has explained Obamacare's generational cost-shifting to the country. Kimmel manages it a couple of sentences.

Is this important? Somewhat, I think. As many of us here have observed, it's a major shift to see Obama laughed at, and not just Obama, but his supposedly For the Greater Good schemes. The left advances by asserting that it is both intellectually and morally superior to its critics; to laugh at Obama's incompetence and to attack him for swindling the innocent is to deny both claims.

More and more I've come to believe that politics is ultimately not about what people read, or learn, or come to believe after giving it careful thought. Politics is all about what people "know" without quite knowing how they came to know it.

Which is just another way of saying: You can't reason someone out of a position he wasn't reasoned into in the first place. The real driver of opinion is not reason -- it never has been and never will be -- but pre-rational things like What Everyone Else is Saying.

A somewhat smaller number of people now "know" Obama is competent and virtuous and honest, and a somewhat higher number of people "know" (closer to really knowing, in my opinion) that he is incompetent and dishonest and manipulative.

41 If they'd read the papers, would they really have known how hard and deep it was going to go in? It seems to me that a large portion of today's youth views the government as benevolent, no matter how hard the gov't proves that it isn't.

If your worldview starts from that position, it's ultimately a lost cause. Our liberty will continue to be given away by the majority until that view flips to government being at best a necessary evil.

Posted by: Clownf*cker at January 15, 2014 11:45 AM (sPO/s)

42 Dangit. Artisinal 'ette beat me to it.

Thomas Sowell has some interesting things to say about this sort of thing in his books.

But seriously, what college age voter is going to be able to put real world experience, common sense, knowledge of human nature, and knowledge of history together and come up with a solid understanding of politics?

So, I visited my (Democrat) sister over the summer for a few weeks. She gets a large portion of her information three sources: The evening news, John Stewart, and the Onion. She considers herself an "informed voter."

Seriously. This is what we're up against.

Anecdote:  I used to date a ginger with huge tracts of land.  She was conservative (USAF vet), but her mother was a die-hard lib state employee.  The mother and I got along pretty well, and had some good debates.  One day I mentioned reading something, and she asked where I had found it.

I've hated the Democratic Party  for  as long as I can remember.  Proudly cast my first vote in 1980 for Ronald Reagan.  I've never understood the attraction of the Democrats because I'm not a collectivist.  Of course, people that like collectivism either think they're going to get "free sh!t" or have a say in giving away somebody else's stuff.

There is a lot of corruption in politics, but in some places, particularly Chicago, they don't think there is anything wrong with political corruption. Illinois has had 2 consecutive governors sent to prison. Politicians lying, cheating, and milking public office for everything they can get out of it is the norm in Chicago. Saddest of all, the citizens know this and continue to vote for democratic party crooks, and continue to fork over ridiculous amounts of taxes to the crooks. And the people in the media, both news and entertainment, actually believe that Obama is above it all. Shows just how dumb they are about this country.

After years of tinkering and spending hundreds of billions of dollars, the website will function at an acceptable level.

After years of bludgeoning and threats, people will sign up for insurance.

After years of fighting,     the doctors and hospitals that don't want this will hang up their shingles and close their doors.

Then, the federal government will finally be able to use H1B visa 'doctors' to provide the medical    service of a quality that is only comparable to the US Post Office.

So many levels of fail.

This is what changed me to conservative: I listened to C-Span radio while commuting (had a long commute), so I'd hear an entire speech, or a decent amount of a Senate or House hearing and then see what 10 second bit was actually excerpted on the nightly news. 9+ time out of 10 the selected sound bite was either mis-used (taken out of context to intentionally give the wrong impression) or used to dodge something said that was much more important than the part they'd chosen to cover.

200 I have family that use government programs and I'm on board with them. My mom's applying for Social Security for instance, and she worked and paid taxes for over forty years. And yet... they put her through the fucking ringer while assholes cheat the system. This is WHY I'm a conservative. When stuff is given away to people who don't earn it and don't need it (like Food Stamps SNAP cards), it hurts the people who have worked and paid taxes that actually run into hard times.

I have no idea why this is controversial. Money is finite...if it goes to people who don't need it then it isn't available to give to the people that do need it. I don't make a lot of money, and I worry that I might be in a bad spot someday and not be able to support my family. The safety net is cool with me, to catch you if you fall. It shouldn't a fucking hammock that you can relax in and be comfortable, you'll want to stay there.

I'm kind of OT, but this idea that programs like this are designed to help the working poor is bullshit. What kind of "poor" person can pay more than a couple hundred bucks a month for insurance? And what kind of program "for poor people" offers plans that require you to have all kinds of stupid shit covered that don't affect basic survival? Government Health Care gives all kinds of benefits to people that don't need them (Insurance covers Birth Control! And sex changes!) while depriving people of the basic right to life (sorry, those operations cost too much. Have a nice death). So, as someone with a mom with health problems and a family that barely gets by...Obama's presidency is basically THE primary reason I went from a pretty moderate democrat to hardcore conservative. I already worry for my new daughter's future in this country.

So yeah, fuck Obamacare.

205 41 If they'd read the papers, would they really have known how hard and deep it was going to go in? It seems to me that a large portion of today's youth views the government as benevolent, no matter how hard the gov't proves that it isn't. If your worldview starts from that position, it's ultimately a lost cause. Our liberty will continue to be given away by the majority until that view flips to government being at best a necessary evil. Posted by: Clownf*cker at January 15, 2014 03:45 PM (sPO/s) To them the government has proven how benevolent it is because it is allowing ghey marriage, protecting minorities, giving free shit to people, and going after the evil corporations. 277 The idea of a penis pump is  to enable  men with some medical issues--such as diabetes--get an erection in order to have sex. By being good-feeling people, they get a feed straight from God apparently, and since I do not act like I have such a feed, I must not be as good as they are. Case closed.

More and more I've come to believe that politics is ultimately not about what people read, or learn, or come to believe after giving it careful thought. Politics is all about what people "know" without quite knowing how they came to know it.

My guess is that the decreased pressure simply stretches the skin and creates lower pressure in the veins, which draws some blood into the enlarged volume, but not enough or under enough pressure for a real erection.

That being said, I would be damned upset if I couldn't get it up and would probably resort to drastic measures.

315  Most young liberals I grew up "knew" a lot of things that they just generally pick up from cultural osmosis. But you get that whole "Socialism has been a disaster everywhere"/ "It's never been really tried!" thing every time you object. So, I just feel most young people that hate Obamacare will just assume Single payer will fix all the problems. I mean, REAL government healthcare hasn't even been tried yet!

There will be a clear, cold morning when there isn't any "more." No more hugs, no more special moments to celebrate together, no more phone calls just to chat. It seems to me that one of the important things to do before that morning comes, is to let every one of your family and friends know that you care for them by finding simple ways to let them know your heartfelt beliefs and the guiding principles of your life so they can always say, "He was my friend, and I know where he stood." I'd note that it even includes semi-private rooms now. If anyone suggested a return to the old ward system for those on say Medicaid, they'd be chased out by an angry mob of social justice warriors. (Presume the condition the people are in the hospital for is a non-communicable disease.)

The comments written by readers to that article are absolutely scathing to the original movie critic.

She gets verbally broke down like a double barrel at a turkey shoot by more then a simple majority of those who took the time to reply.

I'm convinced he's a phony who's only a conservative because that's what the market was demanding when he wanted to get in radio.

90% of the time he sounds like a liberal parody of what conservatives are supposed to sound like.

You can't tell me that a guy from San Francisco who writes books about nutrition is a genuine conservative.
