— Ace In the below excerpt, Walker talks about how we ought to talk.
... that the Left, they want you under their thumb. They want to control you. They want to control your lives. They want you to be dependent on the government. We should say weÂ’re the ones, not only for the poor, but for young people coming out of college, for working class families, for immigrants, for others out there. We should say we are the ones who empower the American Dream.WeÂ’re the ones who say you can do and be anything you want, but itÂ’s because we empower you with the ability and the platform to do that. Then itÂ’s up to you to make that happen. The other side tells you they want to help you, but in the end they want to keep you limited in how far you can grow.
We want to make sure everyoneÂ’s a part of the recovery. WeÂ’re not going to leave anybody behind, but weÂ’re going to do it by empowering people to control their own lives and destiny.
He expresses his frustration at Mitt Romney's campaign, and why Romney lost:
It was, I mean, it’s so frustrating. I mean, you think in modern American history we’ve never had someone running for re-election with an unemployment rate so high that ultimately won the election. I believe Mitt Romney is a good man. I think he would have been a good president, but I think he was mis-served by many in his campaign, many of whom believed, I think incorrectly, that Ronald Reagan won under similar circumstances almost exclusively on the idea that the question was making the election an referendum on Jimmy Carter. In fact, I quote the famous line that Reagan used, “You’re better off today than you were four years ago.” The problem is the Romney camp thought that was the entire focus of the campaign. They failed to see that Reagan’s campaign…… that statement was the closing argument in one of the last debates. It was a way of wrapping things together, but his campaign was much more than just being against Jimmy Carter. It was much more aspirational and Americans could see — and to this day 33 years later — you can still look back and say that and vote for Ronald Reagan. I remember, I was a teenager, had just become a teenager and voted for Ronald Reagan — limited government, you know, smaller government, lower taxes, strong national defense. You knew what you were getting. You knew how a Reagan administration, a Reagan presidency was going to be better for you....
I think that was a huge disservice, but that’s what happens when you fail to make your case positively, affirmatively — make your case about how life will be better if they elect a Republican.
Althouse (where I saw this) comments favorably on Walker's pitch, particularly on his recognition of the "aspirational" nature of a presidential candidacy.
Minor elected officials don't have to worry about the aspirational. They can afford to be entirely transactional-- vote for me, I'll do the things you want me to do. You don't have to look up to me, and you don't need to know I have a coherent vision of the Platonic Ideal of America. In exchange for your vote I'll do these things.
Period.
And that's fine for House members. Senators tend to need a little of the aspirational -- a little of the "poetry" of campaigning, as opposed to the "prose" of voting on legislation -- and governors need even more.
Presidents need a whole lot.
In fact, you can be a completely unaccomplished, never-did-nothing parvenue from the corrupt districts of Chicago and get elected President if you offer mostly the aspirational (with some vague promises about the transactional -- like how much of the federal kitty you're going to redistribute to your coalition).
He's right that Mitt Romney failed to deliver that. Mitt Romney, as far as conservative policy, offered us transactional promises. Not aspirational ones, transactional ones.
For example, he promised us he'd make illegal aliens self-deport. A fine transactional guarantee for those who seek to eject illegal immigrants. But nothing aspirational about it -- he didn't really even try to sell that as a humane and good policy. He just said he'd do it, because Republican primary voters demanded it.
He reported himself as "severely conservative." Another transactional promise. Hey, vote for me; I'll be stingy. Aspirational? Of course not. Who describes himself as "severely" anything?
The one area where I got excited -- and thought Mitt Romney was getting it on this aspirational thing -- is when he began talking about a "government-centered society," contrasting that (not as much contrast as I'd've liked, but it was there) on a society centered around the individual and family.
He began talking less about purely transactional bargains and more about a unifying theory of why conservatism works, and why statism in its various forms do not.
Because statism does not value the individual, only the masses in their corporate collective. Because, as I think Romney said, the larger the state, the smaller the citizen.
While that was good stuff, he didn't really add too much to it, nor find a way to link most of his announced policy preferences into that coherent narrative.
This aspirational stuff is triply important:
First, because it flatters those already inclined to vote for you by telling them not only that they're right -- and everyone loves hearing that -- but by telling them they're right in this novel, exciting way they hadn't previously considered. This gins up enthusiasm in the base, and that translates to more votes.
Second, because it gives people who don't necessarily agree with you another possible reason to vote for you. Someone may not agree with you on most of your transactional promises... but if you've announced a larger thematic rationale for your candidacy, he might like that, and he might even vote for you despite disagreeing with you on details.
And third, because a coherent framework of ideas and vision is a plausible method of persuading the on-the-fence, marginally-invested voter.
On this last point, we don't just nominate candidates to do the mechanical bits of governance. We don't just elect Presidents to sign the bills we like and veto the ones we don't.
We want candidates who can do more than that -- we want candidates who can take our beliefs and persuade more of our countrymen that we're right.
And we want them to do that better than we can ourselves, because most of us aren't terribly good at it, and even if we were halfway good at it, we don't have a the commanding heights of the White House to proclaim it.
I don't see much in the interview where Walker actually offers an aspirational vision. But there's time for that, and at least he recognizes that need.
Congrats to John Hawkins for landing that interview.
And... this has been a longer week for me than the calendar would indicate, so I am officially f*cking off for the night. And I'm going to be f*cking off MLK Day too. (It would be racist of me not to, you know.)
Open Thread.
Bonus: Oh Dear Lord.
And another bonus: Democrats want to study "hate" on the internet.
The future tense of the verb "to study," in the Democrat Dictionary, is "will legislate and restrict freedom."

Because actions matter more than words. Someone can say anything they want but what they do matters.
In particular to Althouse, she said all the right things about TFG and then turned around and voted for him. Again. That tends to rather cast into doubt if she really means what she says.

In fact she made a big deal about her long arduous decision to vote for Romney. Because clearly it was just such a toss up between the two. Oh yeah there's a real thinker.

Well she voted for Walker in both 2010 and the recall election, and voted for Romney as well. It's certainly plausible, leaning strongly towards probable.
Of course none of this matters because the people at Hot Air tell me that Scott Walker is just a GOP-e RINO shill who should be thrown out like week-old garbage. MARK LEVIN FOR PRESIDENT!

Why is there this weird urban legend here on AoSHQ that Althouse voted for Obama? She was crystal clear, explicit that she not only voted for Romney, but that Obama had lost her long ago.
I guess because she's not a movement conservative and doesn't post rabid hate-screeds about Obama every time he appears in public, she's automatically On The Other Side or something.

I think that's a huge assumption.
Two points:
1. Romney's camp was responding quickly to attacks against him. Do you remember all the ads and responses they had to specific charges? They were out pretty much the same day.
Posted by: bonhomme
No assumption necessary because he's referring to the fact that Romney allowed the Left to define him **BEFORE** the general campaign. Romney withheld spending money during the time it mattered.
Responding to charges after they are made in order to present your case is the path to losing. You have to define yourself before they get to the part of accusing you of murder, greed, and all around badness. IE MONTHS BEFORE THE PRIMARY.

There are a lot of fan meta jokes in the new season. The authors are obviously very aware of what is going on in fandom and are willing to poke fun at it; some of it is quite hilarious, and some was a bit much. And yes, that includes how The Big Reveal is handled. There is a difference between being clever for cleverness sake and having a rich plot; felt like sometimes Moffat and Gatiss forgot that.
The new season premieres on PBS this Sunday...maybe one of the sunday regular coblogs can put up a group watch thread? *puppy dog eyes*

And for the last 15 years or more America hasn't delivered on that.
The lower classes have been taking the brunt of the attrition caused by the free trade agreements and Government rules and laws that made it easy and profitable to move jobs overseas and making it more difficult for labor intensive jobs to remain in business.
Government rules (local, state and federal) have been tightening and tightening in areas at the edges where people could make a few dollars here and there to supplement their other job(s).
Increased regulation falls hardest on the smaller businesses or self employed.
The ladder of success lost a bunch of rungs and no one further up the line gave a shit and now they're losing theirs and are crying "why me". They shoulda thought of that years ago.
And BTW for all of the good Romney did occasionally, generally, Bain capital was about restructuring, shrinking and liquidation of failed businesses. So his company was part of the problem or at least could be seen as part of the problem.
Say what you will, when you lose your job and you need help, who is more likely to receive your vote? The guy who says we're cutting your help or the one who says we'll do more for you?
Hard to argue with that especially when the system is at fault and no one talks about actually tearing down the crazy system we've created. Where kids can't have a lemonade stand and the adult jobs all went to China.

For me, honestly, far and away THE biggest Scott Walker plus is simply this:
Not a fucking Ivy Leaguer. (In fact, not even a college grad.)
My distaste for Ivy alums who see themselves as having graduated from their alma mater "booted and spurred, ready to ride" atop the backs of the rest of us has now become so visceral and so strong that it causes me to distrust candidates with whom I would otherwise be immediately sympathetic (cough) Ted Cruz (cough).
The last President we had who wasn't an Ivy man left office in flipping _1989_.
Think about that for a few minutes. Then think about the precipitous decline in our national fortunes and outlook since 1989. I think about that all the goddamned time.
As well as thinking about the legions of Top. Men. who are damn near invariably also from the Ivies, and who have done such a wonderful job with stuff like macroeconomics and "climate change".

Apparently you didn't either read what I wrote or read it the wrong way or I wrote it so that you were unable to understand.
I said "or at least could be seen to be part of the problem".
what part of that didn't you understand?
Elections are about image and Romney had an image as big business/screw the worker.
His company bought out businesses and laid off people or closed them (rightly or wrongly, that's what they did a lot of the time) and to many that appears to reinforce his negative image.

Presidents need to be aspirational....
Well, it is a common theme for Democratic candidates, Hope and/or Change, the Man from Plains and what have you.
But for successful Republican candidates? Reagan, sure -- but Nixon or Eisenhower? The bullet points there seems to be competence, stability and not Democrat.
Now as to whether that would still work in the modern "footie man jammies" era.....

I don't know if Walker will run, but if he does he has something going for him that most of the candidates won't have. He's had to walk through the leftist lanes of fire. And he did it with grace and determination, and won. There's only two other people that are considered for running that have done the same thing: Ted Cruz and Rand Paul.

The only way I survived it was thinking of the eps as three 1.5 hour movies; instead of waiting for a series I am waiting for three movies to be released within a three week timespan. Which is probably just denial on my part but it helped. I get why people complain about the 18-21 ep system of American TV causing laziness or truncated writing, but that length at least allows you to go places, build characterization, and gives you more slack for lagging plot points. In a three episode series there is no room for error; your writing has to be pristine. This was not. Acting was stellar as always, but they can only be as good as what they are given to work with, and I think Moffat/Gatiss let their cast down this time around. If you know you have two years between a series you create, it had better be worth the &@*# wait, for all involved.
Have you seen the original Sherlock pilot, Ace? It is pretty unwatchable. The same elements there, but it is all about how you piece those elements together. I think all the eps this season needed one more rewrite at least to be on the level of season 1.

Conservatives kid themselves if they think everyone just wants a fair chance at success. Too many people want to vote for benefits directly paid for by someone else. Walker is as conventional as they come in many respects. Reagan's message would not resonate as much today as it did then. That is the sad truth. There are millions more single parent families now who want them some government cheese.
People have been conditioned to accept benefits. There is no stigma whatsoever anymore for doing so. That wasn't as true in 1980 as it is now. Back then most people still valued hard work. Now many see it as a sucker play. We work hard and Wall Street gets bailouts when they (and government) screw up. It's everyone for himself now and liberals are going to have a built in advantage in that sort of environment.

Romney did a shitty job of explaining that to the public.
A simple metaphor might have helped.
"You know how there are specialist doctors for cancer? And no matter how good and how highly trained those doctors are, they still unfortunately lose a large percentage of patients. Cancer is tough stuff even for the best doctor to work on."
"Well, when Democrats talk about closed businesses and lost jobs from Bain, remember that Bain is basically the equivalent of a cancer clinic for businesses that are really seriously sick to begin with. So give us some credit for our successes when they bring up our failures. And realize that darn near all those businesses were already well along the road to failure when Bain stepped in."

But Romney was a great candidate, a great man, moral, intelligent, supremely competent, and no threat to non-Leftists.
Romney ran as good of a campaign as could have been expected. I honor the man for what he did.
I expected him to win on the Jimmy Carter analogy; there was no doubt in my mind.
I was wrong because the country has changed from the Jimmy Carter era. I did not understand that fully.
As bizarre, idiotic and as depressing as it may be, race was the sole deciding factor.
Affirmative action won, both times, for BO.
A legacy not ever mentioned is a horrible one. It would have been gloriously wonderful for a Rice or West to be president.
We got an incompetent who happened to be black, and that complicates things.

As you noted, it has been ever so. What appears to be different now is how the Feels are given primacy.
Look, I gave up on Walking Dead because the interesting bit about the show should be how are you going to survive this especially when you are actively being as stupid as possible and why isn't Daryl crossbowing you in the face because you are so stupid why and instead the show focused on but how do we feeeeeeel about all of this. Fuck that shit.
I'm trying to think of something recently that at least tried to balance that out and the first thing that comes to mind is Fringe. Yeah, there were feels but it was balanced by attempts at moving the plot forward.

One of Ronald Reagan's best and most reliable campaign trail applause lines was his relating the story of the hard-hat construction worker who came up to him and said, "I've never been hired to work for a poor man."
The idea that businesses and the wealthy create _job opportunities_ for those who don't own businesses and aren't wealthy. Neatly boiled down to one folksy anecdote.

Stacey Dash I think, in her podcast interview with Adam Carolla, talked about the law of the streets. Growing up where she did that law, self preservation and sufficiency, trumped all. (If you owe someone a debt and you don't pay, you can't just keep kicking that can down the street; you WILL have to pay for it at some point or you will get seriously messed up. A natural law our government skirts.) Conservatism is in perfect tune with the law of the streets, we just need someone to actually point this out who actually believes it, is not just spouting pretty platitudes of sound and fury signifying nothing.
Stacey Dash for Walker's press secretary? I would listen to every press conference, hah, girl is awesome.

Dr who?
It was always the plot lines. You just don't have entertainment without plot lines, and companions. See, Roy Rodgers was just another singing cowboy, but with a good companion like Andy Devine, why that was Television!
Just look at Hopalong Cassidy and his horse Topper. Without Gabby Hayes that show was nothing. And don't forget The Lone Ranger and his faithful Native American Spirit Guide. Pure entertainment.
I love American Television. and movies, and I love my President. I don't hate anyone.
Happy. . Happy..lovie...lovie that's what I believe. If you can't be with the one you love, then love the won. Because we all love winners, and our President is a winner.

Well, and voter fraud without a carefully planned and organized Republican response. It's not as though this business of ballots in car trunks, and buses going from precinct to precinct, is something new. It really cranked up in the late 1990s and it's been gangbusters ever since.
The fundamental problem is that a lot of the GOP are scared to confront this because they'll inevitably get called nasty names. Raciss!
Except, um, they'll call anyone who opposes them the nasty names anyway. Might as well give them a fight they'll remember.

The problem I always had with Stargate was very simple. I kept expecting Morgaine kri Chya to walk through the gate on her horse with Vayne her liegeman just a step behind on his horse. And as Carter and them stare stupidly, Morgaine will remove from its sheath Changeling and order the gate to shut down.
Like Dr. Who, Stargate SG-1 was merely popcorn.

Stargate as a window to Egypt's pantheon? I would disagree a bit. After all they never defeated Sehkmet by getting her drunk on blood colored beer like in one of the old stories. Or how Isis got Ra gravely ill so she could learn his true name. Or how about Ptah or Mut?

I've spent almost 2 years of my life there. If you are dealing with big multinational companies in big cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, etc just stick with English on your card. I have no experience dealing with smaller companies other than as them being suppliers - and then it didn't matter what was on my card. You may be (probably are) totally right in a different business context.

Althouse voted for Obama in 2008 but for Romney in 2012. And she certainly voted for Walker for governor. I'm not a big Althouse fan - I find the lecturing condescending tone she takes with her commenters, many of whom are smarter, deeper thinkers than she is, to be really annoying. But give credit where credit is due. She did a great job of covering the Madison protesters during the whole recall broohaha. That blog was a much better source of information about what was really going on than the MSM was. And she's a UW law professor. Believe me, if you know Madison lefties, it took some balls to do what she did.
Of course, having lived in Madison for as long as she has has scrambled her brain a bit. I give her credit for not being 100% PC sheep.
I've enjoyed rubbing Obama voters noses in the mess of Ocare too. But at some point, unless you're dealing with hardcore leftists, you have to quit with "told ya so, you idiot!" and you know, actually try to persuade them. Some Obama voters are winnable. Hell, I was a Carter voter -in 1980!! - and I eventually saw the light. Some smart conservatives I met and argued with had something to do with that. If they had just sat there and called me a dope and told me I just wanted free shit, I would have said, "Fuck you." Instead, they made me think about my knee-jerk liberalism.
