Liberals Getting a Little Tired of Defending the Indefensible Obamacare "Law"
— Ace

Ron Fournier is getting weary of defending an incompetent law.

Why I'm Getting Sick of Defending Obamacare

Incompetence, politics, and delays frustrate advocates of health care reform.

It's getting difficult and slinking toward impossible to defend the Affordable Care Act. The latest blow to Democratic candidates, liberal activists, and naïve columnists like me came Monday from the White House, which announced yet another delay in the Obamacare implementation.

For the second time in a year, certain businesses were given more time before being forced to offer health insurance to most of their full-time workers. Employers with 50 to 99 workers were given until 2016 to comply, two years longer than required by law. During a yearlong grace period, larger companies will be required to insure fewer employees than spelled out in the law.

Not coincidentally, the delays punt implementation beyond congressional elections in November, which raises the first problem with defending Obamacare: The White House has politicized its signature policy.

The win-at-all-cost mentality helped create a culture in which a partisan-line vote was deemed sufficient for passing transcendent legislation. It spurred advisers to develop a dishonest talking point—"If you like your health plan, you'll be able to keep your health plan." And political expediency led Obama to repeat the line, over and over and over again, when he knew, or should have known, it was false.

Defending the ACA became painfully harder when online insurance markets were launched from a multi-million-dollar website that didn't work, when autopsies on the administration's actions revealed an epidemic of incompetence that began in the Oval Office and ended with no accountability.

Read the whole thing. Now Kirsten Powers agrees: "Amen, Brother."

Republicans call Obama 'lawless' as if it's something as innocuous as having a cold.  For cripes sake, if he's lawless then he's breaking the law.  And if he's not breaking the law, then don't call him lawless.

But if he is, then he needs, and deserves, to be treated like a criminal.

Hayek has a simple but powerful explanation for why central planning always turns out to be sub-optimal, and in the end needs to turn tyrannical.  Like a Soviet five-year plan, as it unfolds ObamaCare is once again proving this, a lesson we should already understand.

Everything the federal government has gotten involved in "to help the middle class" has turned out to be a financial failure, often with escalating prices that hurts the middle class and prices out the working class unless subsidized.  Unfortunately this now includes huge swaths of the economy including  healthcare, higher education and housing.

A couple of things...

First, the "culture" isn't to blame.  It's the people.  No one forced people like Ron Fournier to agitate for and then defend Obamacare.

And it isn't the fault of "political expediency" that Obama lied.  He lied.  It's his fault.    And wasn't he the guy who was supposed to transcend politics as usual anyway...?  How is it the fault of political expediency then?

96 Nothing wrong with a natural light skin tone. That's actually one of those double standards that bugs me. Nobody ever says somebody is too dark, but heaven forbid they have a naturally light skin tone. I know an Irish chick who lives in an area where her skin tone kinda stands out. She constantly got razzed for being "pasty white" and too pale. Constantly told that "girl, you need to get some sun". Fuck that shit. I think she had beautiful skin. It's her natural fucking skin tone.

209 The bad thing about presidential lawlessness is that the next occupant of the office will feel free to act in the same way.  And the limits will be pushed.  Just like the nuclear option in the Senate, the next time the repubs are in power they will do the same thing, and they will probably expand it.  Lawlessness will become institutionalized.  Then the only way to roll all that horseshit back will be for a coup to take place.

238 Article 2: Abuse of Power. Using the powers of the office of President of the United States, Richard M. Nixon, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in disregard of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has repeatedly engaged in conduct violating the constitutional rights of citizens, imparting the due and proper administration of justice and the conduct of lawful inquiries, or contravening the laws governing agencies of the executive branch and the purposes of these agencies. This conduct has included one or more of the following: (1) He has, acting personally and through his subordinated and agents, endeavored to obtain from the Internal Revenue Service, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, confidential information contained in income tax returns for purposes not authorized by law, and to cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigation to be initiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner. (2) He misused the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Secret Service, and other executive personnel, in violation or disregard of the constitutional rights of citizens, by directing or authorizing such agencies or personnel to conduct or continue electronic surveillance or other investigations for purposes unrelated to national security, the enforcement of laws, or any other lawful function of his office; he did direct, authorize, or permit the use of information obtained thereby for purposes unrelated to national security, the enforcement of laws, or any other lawful function of his office; and he did direct the concealment of certain records made by the Federal Bureau of Investigation of electronic surveillance. (3) He has, acting personally and through his subordinates and agents, in violation or disregard of the constitutional rights of citizens, authorized and permitted to be maintained a secret investigative unit within the office of the President, financed in part with money derived from campaign contributions to him, which unlawfully utilized the resources of the Central Intelligence Agency, engaged in covert and unlawful activities, and attempted to prejudice the constitutional right of an accused to a fair trial. (4) He has failed to take care that the laws were faithfully executed by failing to act when he knew or had reason to know that his close subordinates endeavored to impede and frustrate lawful inquiries by duly constituted executive; judicial and legislative entities concerning the unlawful entry into the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee, and the cover-up thereof, and concerning other unlawful activities including those relating to the confirmation of Richard Kleindienst as attorney general of the United States, the electronic surveillance of private citizens, the break-in into the office of Dr. Lewis Fielding, and the campaign financing practices of the Committee to Re-elect the President. (5) In disregard of the rule of law: he knowingly misused the executive power by interfering with agencies of the executive branch: including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Criminal Division and the Office of Watergate Special Prosecution Force of the Department of Justice, in violation of his duty to take care that the laws by faithfully executed. In all of this, Richard M. Nixon has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States. Wherefore Richard M. Nixon, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office. (Approved 28-10 by the House Judiciary Committee on Monday, July 29, 1974.)

Take Obamacare, and replace it with Canada-style single payer today.

Taxes go up marginally, but:

No insurance premiums. No co-pays. No insurance burden on employers, save for supplemental coverage plans, which are comparatively cheap.

That, my friends, is a net economic *stimulus* compared to ObamaCare.

And let me assure you, my effective tax rate for my gross income is less in Canada *now* than it would be if I lived in the US.  We do have high sales taxes to offset, but if you were to ask me to move back to the US, I'd refuse.

It would economically RUIN us.

And that's why single-payer is going to be *very* hard to fight. The most persuasive argument is that the government can't be trusted with it.  It's not like Canada.

Yep.  And they fucking love it here.  LOVE it.  And cannot understand why the US just won't do it.

I can't argue with the family-level economics. The old system in the US bankrupted us once due to unforeseen surgeries.  I have no danger of that here.  Just a significant decline in the quality of care as the consequence.

But when I point out that the government is used as a weapon in the US, and single-payer would be the biggest weapon of them all, they start to get it a little.

I don't see a conviction happening if Obama is impeached.  I do not see anything good coming from an impeachment, just giving him and his enablers a club to use on his foes and a distraction from his disasters.

That alone is - to me - sufficient reason not to impeach.

Let's see:

* Legislation by the two most corrupt members of Congress, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi ...

* passed on a strictly party-line vote, with input from non-Democrats blocked at every step of the way ...

* that is thousands of pages long, requiring the writing of tens of thousands of pages of regulations ...

* that mandates massive increases on taxes, including the first tax specifically levied on people who are *too poor* to buy something ...

* that specifically eschews many reforms, including tort record and opening insurance markets, that would alleviate problems that are driving up health costs unnecessarily ...

* that adds massive new bureaucracies to the health-care system, but not one single doctor or nurse ...

* the whole thing to be set up by an administration that is headed by a man who knows nothing about health care, and who, before being elected president, had not run so much as a lemonade stand ...

and this f***ing fool actually expected it to work!

In the immortal words of John McClane: "Welcome to the party, pal."

HST (harmonized sales tax) includes provincial and federal.  In Ontario, it is 13%.

Where I lived in NYS was over 8% sales tax.  So, for a $50 sweater, I pay 56.50 in Ontatio.  I paid $54 in NY.  On that scale, it is hardly noticed.

People hate it, but they are paying an extra $2.50 for a sweater, instead of $1200 per month for shitty health coverage, with deductibles and co-pays on top of it.

So... each Net Taxpayer would have to pay about $24,000 per year in Taxes, JUST to fund the single payer system. some of those costs would be offset by Existing Government Programs... but that level of Taxation is unsustainable.

Does anyone have any actual proof that this happened on a widespread level at any point in the 20th century (say, percentage of US households bankrupted by a single surgery compared to the percentage headed by gay couples)?

The one study that sticks out is the one that examined the "more than half of bankruptcies are due to medical" schtick and noticed that a household with $50K in consumer debt and $1K in medical debt was always coded as a "medical bankruptcy."  But you can't sway public opinion by showing people suffering from their tragic purchase of a jetski they can't afford.

Posted by: Truck Monkey at February 12, 2014 12:49 PM (32Ze2)

Oh, I sure know what that fucking means.  Thus:

1. Find three good friends and get them in your inner circle and figure out a plan for escaping the main cities to a safe place in the country;

2. Pool your resources to buy a cabin on a swiftly flowing river in the foothills (Skykomish River, Washington . . . ), preferably something back in the brush aways from the main road.  I can think of one spot where some C4 under a narrow bridge across that river would ensure the city folk/LIVs/zombie hordes would never get to the cabin.

3. Pool your resources to buy a deuce and a half from Army Surplus and pack it with all the seeds, alcohol, medicine, ammunition, and freeze dried food, and park it in a secure location close to the cabin.  (Not stored in the cabin, in case someone gets there before your group).

4. Buy a three wheeler for every member of the family over the age of 5, and a papoose carrier for every member under that age, and park them where your family can get to them.

5. Guns required for each family:  a. 1911 .45 cal. pistol for every adult; b. .50 cal. Barrett sniper rifle; 3. semi-auto riot shotgun with a Beta C-Mag
dual-lobed drum magazine; 4. AR-15 for every adult (and plenty of banana clips); a Ma Deuce mounted in the sidecar of the lead motorcycle for your caravan.

6. Plenty of backpacks, sleeping bags, fishing gear and camping gear.

7.  When the balloon goes up, first make sure you have all your taxes filed, fishing and hunting licenses, passports and other ID, and most especially, permits for all the weaponry mentioned above.  HA HA HA!  WTF!?!?!

8.  When the balloon goes up, marshall your family at the agreed meeting point with the other three families, load up, and get the fuck out of dodge and head to the cabin.  The three wheelers guarantee you won't get trapped by traffic jams.  Kill anything/anyone who tries to stop you.

9.  Wait until 90% of the country kills itself off trying to eat, clear some land, plant some crops, and start the US over, with the original Constitution as written.

10.  SUCCESS!!!

All of this shit would be considered paranoid lunacy a few years ago.  Now, anyone who isn't actively putting something like this in place for their families is probably committing parental negligence.

382 Posted by: Mikey NTH - Wrathful Grapes and Contemptuous Celery in the Produce Department! at February 12, 2014 01:13 PM (gmoEG) Its simple... The power of the Purse is moot... by Republican choice. Impeachment is off the Table. We the People, have no standing in Court. States are constantly overruled by Fed Judges, even on STATE Law (see Kentucky gay marriage thing today)... And Obama is ignoring the Constitution. If the built in Checks and Balances do not work... if Obama continues to push (and he will, with no Legal Push back, hell, just yesterday he said he was President and could do anything).... Then the final result will be Jeffersonian... and THAT is what I fear...

The problem with that, as I see it, is that the Dems have a shitload of toads who imagine themselves behind the Resolute desk.  What, short of Plotzensee prison, could Barky offer to persuade someone like Joey Choo-Choo (OK, bad example, just give him a propeller beanie) or someone like Cankles to give up on that dream?

And the big green eyes are another indication of ethnicity and latitude of genetic origin. Neither has ever wanted to "tan". I however am the burnt and tan gnome.

403 I don't see a conviction happening if Obama is impeached. I do not see anything good coming from an impeachment, just giving him and his enablers a club to use on his foes and a distraction from his disasters. That alone is - to me - sufficient reason not to impeach. Posted by: Romeo13 I am assuming the GOP takes the Senate for one thing. While it may not give enough seats to convict, the MSM could absolutely not ignore a long list of actual high crimes enumerated. The average LIV does not even know who Joe Biden is and thinks Obama is 'cool' while the racist Tea Party is bad because...something. If the American People KNEW that the corruption was at Chicago/USSR level I think that would be worth it. It would also stop the 3 branches from nodding and winking at each other ignoring the Constitution. Let the Dems stand up and defend the IRS abuses, the OCare lawlessness, Fast & Furious. In prime time. Not just, "This is a witch hunt and racist" but actually defend the facts at trial. When Ford pardoned Nixon he did severe damage to the Country. You don't get that back. We didn't.

432 "Take Obamacare, and replace it with Canada-style single payer today.Taxes go up marginally, but:
No insurance premiums."

Not true: Ontario, Alberta, and BC charge fees, which are collected by the income tax system.

Ontario also charges a fee to employers for covered employees.

http://canadaonline.about.com/cs/healthcareontario/a/ohippremiums.htm

It is *illegal* for a Canadian to pay for extra coverage out of his pocket: he *must* go through the government-run system. Which is why so many come to the US for "radical" procedures, such as CT and MRI scans.

Want to see the Canadian health system in action? Have a look at the Canadian feature film "The Barbarian Invasions", which depicts a man dying of cancer - and the how bribery and influence peddling is needed to get him the level of care that is taken for granted by most in this country.

What a swell idea: the feds wrecked the system we have, so let's turn *everything* over them!

Assuming she and the new boy-toy can afford the drug regimen themselves (okay- fat chance, but still), then I really don't have that much problem with their choice. At least she *was* taking the preventative meds. 2- It's far, far better than that guy (I think it was a guy) who found out he was HIV positive and decided to sleep around as much as possible to infect as many people as possible.

There's been more than one of those.  And it's taken awhile for some states to make that a crime.

Posted by: HR at February 12, 2014 09:42 AM (ZKzrr)

474 Not true: Ontario, Alberta, and BC charge fees, which are collected by the income tax system.

Here's what I know.

I net the same, at my current salary, as I netted back in 2005.  And I am not responsible for copays or deductibles.

The math says I am ahead.  Regardless of what line item is used to confiscate the money from me, I'm not fucked twice by paying for a premium and then paying for copays or deductibles.

My supplemental coverage can be billed for overflow with my wife's insurance, so we never have a co-pay on medication.

This is what you're up against when you argue against single-payer.  Horror stories have *never* convinced the ignorant masses not to do something when they can personally benefit in the short term.

The only argument that has a chance of working is that the government is malicious and weaponized.  And there's a smaller chance of using incompetence as an argument too.

I grant a LOT more flexibility to the opinion types.  It was more of a generalized statement.  Brian Williams defends the president, 'hard' newscasters do, almost exclusively.

I expect opinion casters to have an opinion and to broadcast it.  Good for them.  Rock your 1st Amendment.

I should be able to expect the reporters (a line which is becoming increasingly blurry) to simply report.

498 AllenG she was still rolling the dice with an innocent life. 1% chance to infect her daughter with it. And? People do that all the time. I'm a genetic alcoholic. People over 35 have children quite frequently (higher incidence of problems during pregnancy). People drink, smoke, and do drugs while pregnant. I'm not saying it was *wise* but that doesn't make her "a monster." Selfish? Yeah, I'll grant you that one. Monster? I don't think it quite crosses that line. Assuming she wanted a child because she wanted a child (and not as some kind of status symbol/statement), then she took the precautions she could and rolled the dice. The world isn't perfect.
