Local Mayor Ray Nagin, An Independent With No Party Affiliation, Convicted on Corruption Charges
— Ace

Sigh.

I searched. The word "Democrat" does not appear in the article.

The former mayor of New Orleans – once the public face of a city battered by Hurricane Katrina – could be headed to prison.

A jury has just returned guilty verdicts on 20 of the 21 counts of corruption and bribery that Ray Nagin faced in a nine-day trial.

Barring a favorable appeal, Nagin, 57, could be sentenced to as much as two decades in a federal penitentiary. Prosecutors used 26 witnesses and reams of documents to detail how Nagin accepted more than $500,000 in payouts, including first-class trips to Jamaica and Manhattan, in exchange for millions of dollars in city contracts.

His age is relevant. His party affiliation, not.

Nagin's spectacular plunge from upstart politician and post-storm persona to convicted felon is more than just another case study in public service gone awry. American history – Louisiana's in particular – is littered with similar cases of politicians on the take.

Everybody does it.

...
Prosecutors say Nagin's personal-enrichment schemes at City Hall began before Katrina hit, continued through the storm's bumpy aftermath and persevered through his second term and even beyond. As people dug out from under the rubble and wrestled with how to rebuild their city, Nagin was soliciting large checks for himself and his sons' granite countertop business from those wishing to do business with the city.

Early in the storm's aftermath, Nagin showed signs of becoming the leader the city needed, admonishing the federal government for its slow response and giving impassioned national TV interviews..... He was out of town a lot. Prosecutors showed that many of those trips — to New York City, Las Vegas and Jamaica — were funded by businessmen hoping to land big contracts with the city.

...

All that changed today, when a jury decided Nagin would be the first mayor in the city's 296-year history to be convicted of corruption.

They simply refuse to offer party affiliations for convicted Democrats. They flat-out refuse. They just will not do it.

The win-at-all-cost mentality helped create a culture in which a  bribe  was deemed sufficient for  doing transcendent things.  It spurred advisers to develop a dishonest talking point— "Ray Nagin is an honest man."   And political expediency led Nagin to accept bribes, over and over and over again, when he knew, or should have know, that it was wrong.

In many ways, this is Obams's story.

69 I used to work for Ray Nagin when he owned our ECHL franchise in New Orleans. All seven members of the ownership are now convicted felons. One key element in Nagin's conviction was the demise of Jim Letten's career as federal prosecutor in the area... when the folks from out of town showed up, they kept everything very secure but were very aggressive in putting their case together. Note, as well, that there was not a holdout among the jury (where there was in the Edwin Edwards trial). The sad thing is that Marc Morial, Nagin's predecessor, is orders of magnitude dirtier than Nagin, but will not be pursued due to a deal between Jim Letten, the Landrieu family, and the Obama administration so that Letten (a Bush appointee) could keep his job.

106 "14 Early in the storm's aftermath, Nagin showed signs of becoming the leader the city needed, admonishing the federal government for its slow response and giving impassioned national TV interviews " Yup, "admonishing federal government blah, blah, blah", "impassioned national TV interviews blah, blah, blah". Do liberals have any idea at all what it takes to manage an institution in the real world? Hint, it isn't interviews and statements. No wonder these liberals worship Obama, they actually think that effective management is speech giving, which is pretty much all Obama is capable of.

111 I had high hopes for him.  One of Nagin's first acts as Mayor was to clean out a corrupt city agency.

Here's the NRO story on it from 2002 --

"On July 22, not yet three months into his administration, the new mayor ordered a lightning raid on the city's Taxicab Bureau, arresting more than 80 employees and cabbies (including his own cousin) on bribery and related charges, and shutting the agency down. Its head was led out of city hall in handcuffs. When Lilliam Regan, the director of the city agency that oversees the Taxicab Bureau, called a press conference that afternoon to defend her workers, Nagin's men walked in front of the TV cameras, told Regan to pack up her things and get out of city hall. She was fired, and later arrested."

I guess he wasn't the squeaky clean anti-corruption reformer he made himself out to be.

But he quickly realized Nagin would shrink from rather than shoulder the enormous task at hand. "He did not enjoy the work of being mayor," DuBos says. "He only enjoyed being the mayor."

One of the worst things about Katrina is how Nagin, Blanco and especially Parish Presidents were said to be 'Leaders" simply because they did interview after interview excoriating the feds for not cleaning up their mess. This while the State Cops were blocking people from taking truckloads of food and water into the city or while cops seized guns illegally or shot innocents. Or forced people to evacuate to places that then flooded and killed them or the deputies that seized peoples' pets and then shot them. I could go on for days on the shit that went on that was never reported nationally or even at all. Nagin did nothing but preen for the cameras. Nothing.

220 New Orleans had an offer from a couple of salvagers who offered to pay a couple of hundred dollars for each car that was washed up and abandoned across the city, thousands of them. Instead those offers were refused and the government paid for their removal and continues to pay for storage of those vehicles on a big piece of land north of the city. That might be for a good reason though. After every major flood a TON of people get ripped off in the used car market. They buy the flood cars not knowing what they're getting. I know caveat emptor, but it might be the reason. I believe CarFax will tell you if a car is a flood vehicle.

Nagin was, at that time, a known Bush supporter, having contributed to the presidentÂ’s campaign. Nagin entered the New Orleans mayoral race a political unknown but emerged through the middle of a crowded field of known Democrats, securing vital cross-party and in-party endorsements for his populist pledges to tackle city hall corruption and run the administration in a more business-like manner."

NOTORIOUS B.I.G.'S ONE MORE CHANCE RAP LYRICS TRANSLATED

Lyric:
First things first, I poppa, freaks all the honeys
Dummies - playboy bunnies, those wantin' money
Those the ones I like 'cause they don't get nathan'
But penetration, unless it smells like sanitation
Garbage, I turn like doorknobs
Heart throb, never, black and ugly as ever
However, I stay coochied down to the socks
Rings and watch filled with rocks

Translation:
As a general rule, I perform deviant sexual acts with women of all kinds, including but not limited to those with limited intellect, nude magazine models, and prostitutes. I particularly enjoy sexual encounters with the latter group as they are generally disappointed in the fact that they only receive penile intercourse and nothing more, unless of course, they douche on a consistent basis. Although I am extremely unattractive, I am able to engage in these types of sexual acts with some regularity. Perhaps my sexuality is somehow related to my fancy and expensive jewelry.

Did anyone watch and see how it actually went down?

I periodically play a little game with myself called What If The Ethnicities And Affiliations Of All These People Were Reversed.

So in that case, you would have a white Republican complaining about a white Supreme Court Justice who was nominated by a Democrat, about how that Justice was married to a black woman and how that was racially unacceptable.

If there's one thing I think we can all agree on, it's that this hypothetical alternate would not have been given a whole lot of opportunity to try to "walk back his comments". He would have been instantly mobbed, driven from office, curb stomped, burned alive, and had the scorch marks cleaned up with a pressure washer, starting about two seconds after his initial observation.

464 "News flash from the South: When the snow, sleet, and ice came down here a couple of weeks back, it wasn't the snow, sleet, and ice that kept me off the roads...it was mortal fear of my fellow motorists."

I have found that no matter where you are in the USA, the auto industry having made four wheel drive and antilock brakes into now commonly available items (instead of rare and unavailable respectively, as was the case earlier) has really done everyone a disservice.

America is full of driving dunces who figure they don't have to slow down at all in low traction conditions of any sort because they have 4WD and ABS.

Bzzzzt! Wrong.

They also figure that since they have air bags, they're magically immune to injury in accidents. The wreck I saw late last year where such people got their SUV upside down at very high speed and then slid it into a rail that cut the entire greenhouse off of the inverted vehicle? Well, the air bags certainly did go off. Didn't help the occupants a whole lot.

Posted by: Nevergiveup at February 12, 2014 04:33 PM (nzKvP) ----------------------------- Getting to the post season and having the opportunity to hit in it, winning championships, etc. depends on a whole lot more than one person. Jeter's career batting average is great, but not "unique." It's not #1. The Iron Man and Rivera actually are unique, one of a kind. They hold the record for being numero uno in a significant stat --- and those records are unlikely to be broken. Jeter is a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame, a great player, and yes, a better hitter than Cal. But not historic in the same way.

I have had decent luck with cables in moderate ice/snow. They seem to store and handle a lot more gracefully than chain sets.

505 The only knock on Jeter that holds any water is the fact that he doesn't have a lot of   "range" at SS.  Hundreds of short stops have played  for MLB since Jeter broke into the bigs and a good many of them had much more range than he ever had. Firstly, the obvious associations of democrats to corruption. This must of course be avoided, at all cost.

Secondly, by not using the word democrat in the story, especially online, it makes it fairly difficult to successfully google "corruption, fraud, convicted, democrat".
